Love Southern wedding traditions and want to include them in your wedding? We wrote our e-book just for you!

When I got married (a little over three years ago), most people weren’t even considering doing a “first look.” My how things change so quickly! While I am a fan of the stunning, emotional images that a first look can help achieve, I am an old soul, and pretty traditional when it comes to weddings. Unsurprisingly, BDK and I opted not to see each other before our ceremony. For us, this was definitely the right decision.

As y’all may know, most Southerners are “Daddy’s girls,” so this sweet tradition that we’ve been seeing is a perfect solution! Want those emotional “first look” photos without actually seeing your beau before the wedding day? Let your daddy step in!

Jason Mize, next two Ray Anthony, Dixie Pixel, Julie A. Whitlock

Y’all, these images could bring a tear to the driest eye!

Emily and I are both huge fans of this sweet twist! The moment when a father first sees his daughter in her wedding gown can be a very emotional and memorable moment. Especially when, as in the photo by Dixie Pixel above, his daughter chooses to wear his wife’s wedding gown! Though a wedding day is focused on the bride and groom, we love when a bride takes a few minutes to spend with just her father.

Special thanks to Moment Junkie, where we found several of these images! Check out their blog for many more moving wedding photographs.

Will you be having a “first look” or did you do a “first look” with your groom — or your Dad? What do you think of this new twist on the tradition?

Oh my lord, this is the sweetest thing ever! When my husband and I were planning the wedding, my dad couldn’t even talk about the father-daughter dance song (“My Girl” by the Temptations) without having to excuse himself because he was so emotional. On the actual day he got teary several times but held it together well, too.

    • avatar Marissa reply

Aw! That is so sweet, Annie! It’s such a proud, and emotional moment for fathers! I’m sure yours was so happy!

My first look with my dad was one of my favorite memories of my wedding day.

When I walked down the staircase he started to lose it! Fearing I would lose it too, I started singing his favorite song, 2011- The USC Gamecocks fight song (yes, I sang it). Being that he is a former football coach, I told him it was “game time” for both of us and we were getting ready for a big win :)

He smiled, laughed, and cried all at the same time. It was perfect.

    -Michelle

PS: We got married on the day of the Carolina vs. Clemson game – so there were two big wins that day!

    • avatar Marissa reply

What a great memory, Michelle! As a big football fan myself, I bet this was awesome! And, wow def a big football day to get married! xx, MAK

  9. avatar Lindsay{LCVintage} reply

Aww, I love those! I did a first look with my Dad and it was so cute.

  10. avatar Katie reply

My eyes are brimming with tears! I sure hope nobody comes into my office to ask me anything. My fiance and I are totally against doing a first look ourselves–call me old fashioned but that’s how I’ve felt since I was about five years old. I definitely plan on doing a first look with my dad. Considering that he seemed more excited than I was to show off my engagement ring the following morning at church (and trust me, that had to be A LOT of excitement), his emotions on the actual Big Day will probably be out of control, so I know it will be incredibly special and memorable.

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Katie! I agree, I was a very traditional bride, but this is such a sweet solution. And I bet your dad will be so happy you are taking the time to spend with him during such a special day! xx, MAK

  11. avatar Nancy Ray reply

Oh my word, I’m tearing up over here! That last one is just precious!
I have a Daddy First Look photo from my wedding day and it’s one of my favorites. Such sweetness!

  12. avatar Emily reply

My mom says dad can’t even talk to her about my wedding without getting choked up, so I know he’ll make this a great photo. No matter how old I get he’ll still be my Daddy!

A comprimise on the first look with the groom though is the photos I’ve seen of the bride and groom each on a side of a solid door holding hands and not looking at each other. I love them.

Welcome back to my wedding planning journey, guys + gals! Today we’re talking cake + sweets – an important component of any wedding!

Call me traditional, but when I think wedding cake, I think tiered, white, and lovely, like these pretties below:

All cakes from Martha Stewart Weddings except bottom left, which is from Southern Weddings (photo by Tec Petaja)

In fact, that cake in the upper left is my all-time favorite wedding cake — it’s absolutely perfect in my mind!

However, after tasting the cakes at my sister’s wedding, I pretty much decided that I could never serve a tiered confection at my wedding. For me, tiered cakes are always too dense and/or dry. I’m not a baker, but I think this is because they have to be denser in order to support the weight of the tiers — I’m not sure a fluffy tiered cake is possible! (However, should any pastry artists out there wish to prove me wrong, I am always up for taste tests!)

Besides, we don’t really have the budget for a gorgeous tiered cake, anyway. Instead, we’re going to be serving an assortment of mini desserts (to go along with our mini food!). We’ll also have a small cutting cake, but more about that in a minute. First, let’s feast our eyes on some delicious-looking + diminutive desserts!

There’s mini pecan pies…

mini key lime tarts…

mini fruit tarts…

mini cookies…

and even more exotic offerings, like mini donuts, milkshakes, candy apples, and waffle bowls with ice cream!

Pecan pie photos by Caroline Joy (via SW) and Braedon Flynn (via SW); key lime tart photos by Karen Wise (via Style Me Pretty), Jessica Lorren (via SW), and Jodi Miller (via SW); fruit tart photos from Cannelle et Vanille and Martha Stewart Weddings; mini cookies both from Martha Stewart Weddings; mini milkshakes photo by Julie Lim (via SW); waffle bowls and candy apples from Martha Stewart Weddings; donuts photo by Chris Court

We’re still debating which, exactly, mini desserts we’ll be servings at our reception, but I do know that mini fruit tarts will be in the mix – they’re John’s favorite, and one of his only requests! I also know we’re going to be serving a special treat made by my Momma — I’m not going to spoil the surprise for any of our guests that might be reading, but I will say that all of my high school friends could probably guess correctly right away — these little treats have been a staple at the Ayer household for as long as I can remember! I’m so grateful that our caterer, A Thyme to Cook, is willing to transport and set out our homemade treats along with theirs — it makes it so much more possible to contribute family recipes and still have everything move smoothly and flow seamlessly!

Now about that cutting cake. We were originally going to have A Thyme to Cook make it, as well, but as we took a harder look at our budget, we realized that this was one detail we could pretty easily take care of ourselves, and save some money while doing so. I don’t think I would be brave enough to make a cake a few days before our wedding that I’d actually be feeding to our guests, but since John and I will be the only ones tasting this cake, I’m not that worried! All we have to do is make it edible and decently pretty on the outside. Here’s some of the “doable” cake inspiration I’ve been gathering:

Bow cake photo by Braedon Flynn (via SW), meringue cake photo by J. Malahy (via SW), white cake buffet photo by The Nichols (via Style Me Pretty), heart cake buffet photo by Brooke Images (via SW), ruffled cake photo by Melissa Schollaert (via SW), flag cake photo by The Nichols (via Style Me Pretty), and raspberry cake photo by Aaron Delesie

Surely my family and I can pull off something like the above – what do you think? Oh yes, and we’ll totally be making the cake itself from a box — no way am I going “from scratch” on this one!

I’d also love to hear what y’all will be serving for dessert at your weddings. A traditional cake? A cake buffet? Pies? Mini desserts? Please comment + let me know!

We’re planning on having a dessert buffet of pies, cupcakes, and doughnuts (Krispy Kreme, of course!), but I also wanted to have a very small cake for our actual cake-cutting. I hadn’t thought about making it myself, but like you said, we’ll be the only ones eating it and it would be far more economical. How far in advance will you make it? I just wouldn’t want to be worrying about it the day before or the day of.

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Laura! That all sounds DELICIOUS! We’ll probably make ours the Wednesday before the wedding. I don’t really care if it’s all that fresh, since I’ll probably just be eating a bite or two anyway! :) You could also make the cake layers a few weeks or even months before your wedding and freeze them!

    • avatar Laura reply

That is true. I think you may have inspired me to bake my own wedding cake!

  2. avatar Haley reply

Hiya Emily! My fiance and I are doing a tiered cake and mini pies. We can’t wait! We’ll be using my apple pie recipe and my mother will be making my grandmother’s chocolate chess pie. YUM! Your wedding is going to be lovely! Congratulations!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Haley! YUM! Mini pies are just the most adorable thing to me… I’m sure yours will be lovely!

  3. avatar Brittany R reply

I love the idea of mini desserts! They will be a huge hit.

We opted to do a cake buffet with 5 flavors-they are each a 2-3 layer round cake like you would by from a bakery…only we ordered 2 of all of them, so we can have backups for when they run out. My grandmother has been gifting me milk glass cake stands for the past few years, and unbeknownst to her, we will be using them for our cake buffet! I thought that was a sweet way to pay homage to her. :)
In place of a traditional groom’s cake, he opted to do a cobbler bar with vanilla ice cream…so far, everyone loves the idea!

    • avatar Brittany R reply

Brittany R: sorry, typo! “like you would *buy from a bakery

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Brittany! A cobbler bar sounds AMAZING, and I love the idea of using the cake stands from your grandmother as a surprise! I’m sure she’ll be thrilled!

  4. avatar Madelynne Miller reply

    Hi Emily!

We are doing 2 cakes – a groom’s cake and a bride’s cake. His cake is going to alternate between tiers of chocolate and strawberry w/ vanilla buttercream and will be grey on the outside with one tier possessing the pattern from his argyle sock! My cake is going to be lemon w/ lemon buttercream and will be all white on the outside with one tier possessing the chevron pattern we used on our stationery and table linens! We are going for a very modern look with one tier taller than the rest and both cakes will be the same size. Our cake is definitely contributing/enhancing the decor!

PS: Y’all can totally handle a traditional small cake! You should do funfetti!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Madelynne! Love that you’re using patterns pulled from other places in your design — so fun!! And you’re right, those cakes will TOTALLY add to the overall vibe/decor!

  5. avatar Desiree reply

Hey Emily – So, I made a small layered cake for a photoshoot last year. I would highly recommend getting the following tools: round shallow cake pan, skinny knife for trimming top layers, those plastic pipes that you shove in the cake to support the layers, a good icing spatula, cardboard platter that you wrap in pretty paper and construct the cake on (dang near impossible to move a cake once its layered and iced…duh.) and you might want to find a DEEP freezer. My cake melted in the car ride bc I didn’t have it frozen beforehand. ALSO – get one of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-International-Collapsible-Cupcake-Carrier/dp/B002C741M2

I carried mine it just a general rubbermaid box and you guessed it, cake all over the place. It’s totally doable but you just need the right tools. Go add those things to your registry ;o) xoxo

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Desiree! Thanks for the tips! I actually learned a bit about cake making from the owner of Sugarland a few years ago for an SW feature, and one tip she had was to use bubble tea straws for the supports! They work great!

  6. avatar Elizabeth | Glessner Photography reply

OBSESSED with that Pecan Pie tower… my absolute favorite dessert (my grandmother’s recipe is the best of. all. time). I’m just jealous I didn’t think of it for my own wedding :)

  7. avatar Lindsay Ann reply

Emily, I love the mini dessert idea. It reminds me of the cookie table tradition in a lot of Italian American weddings that I attended while growing up in Northeastern Ohio. There were always lots of pizelles, tarts, and oh so heavenly clothespin cookies. Yum!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Lindsay Ann! I completely agree with the similarities! Also, you’ve really got me intrigued as to what a “clothespin cookie” is…

  8. avatar Allie@HoneyBeeInvites reply

You’re going to be a gorgeous bride Emily! And I know how you feel so many dessert options! We just picked donuts for our mini dessert bar options. I am obsessed with donuts so it was a total “duh” moment when we selected Glazed in Charleston to create the fun flavors! They are the best!
    Good luck planning girl!! xo

  9. avatar Kelcey H. reply

I LOVE that you’re making your own cake! As an aspiring self-taught baker I think everything is better (and sweeter) homemade. The rose cake you have shown above is actually super easy (even for a not so regular cake baker). There are tons of how to videos online if you’d like to give it a try. Plus, no one would ever know you made it yourself.

    Happy Baking!

Welcome back to Emily Plans a Wedding, belles! I’m kind of jumping all around over here, but I trust you don’t mind. Especially since today, we’re talking hair and makeup inspiration, which is always a favorite with brides-to-be! I know that I personally can’t help pinning gorgeous updos left and right. You?

Image by Heather Kincaid, overlay by SW

Let’s get started! First, we’ll discuss my hair and makeup inspiration, and then I’ll introduce you to the lady who’s going to make the magic happen. We’ll save accessories for another day.

Right, so I was all set to come in here and tell you that I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to wear my hair up, down, or half up/half down. But then I looked at the inspiration images I’d been hoarding, and saw there was a clear pattern: they were almost all updos, as you’ll soon see. Here are a few favorites:

Credits from top: style by Naemmah Carre via Teen Vogue; unknown; hair by Hot Heads Salon and makeup by Bobbi Brown (photo by Tec Petaja via Weddingbee); photo by Jill Thomas via Style Me Pretty; photo by Tory Williams

Contrary to what these photos might be telling you, I will not be wearing a hair flower. I am, however, looking for a loose, modern updo with side-swept bangs and a bit of a Southern bump. I have fairly long hair that is naturally curly and pretty thick, so I think this is doable.

Though I think overall I prefer the look of an updo, and think it would look better with the neckline of my dress, I still haven’t completely given up on a half up/half down look. My two favorite inspiration images:

Credits: Kate Middleton photo by Getty Images via Glamour and Rachel McAdams photo courtesy of New Line Cinema

Yes, that would be Princess Kate and Rachel McAdams. I aim high. Though I love these two looks, I think I would get annoyed having my hair down all night while dancing. Thoughts, ladies who have gone with this look?

So that’s hair, and I think I have a fairly good handle on what I want. Makeup, though? That’s a whole other story. I don’t wear much makeup on a day to day basis, and it’s all pretty mysterious to me in general. (In fact, Marissa had to do my eye makeup for our last staff photoshoot!) Because I don’t wear much makeup normally, I don’t want to try anything too dramatic on our wedding day, because I still want to look like myself… but prettier :) In fact, that’s about the best direction I can give: pretty, please! Here’s what I mean:

Credits: Natalie Portman image by Tim Walker from Teen Vogue and image by Jamie Beck

I think I have similar coloring to Natalie Portman and Emma Watson, so I try to scope out what they’ve got going on. Do any of you do that? Who’s your celeb coloring twin?

Thankfully, I won’t be left to my own devices with this scanty inspiration. No, someone very talented is going to be on hand to get me prettified, and her name is Tia Reagan! Now before you all go thinking I’m crazy for flying a hair and makeup artist in from California for my big day, let me explain. Tia just so happens to be best buddies with our amazing photographer, Tanja Lippert, and the two work together all the time. Tia started out in the industry as a photographer, and she still second shoots on occasion with Tanja. When Tanja suggested Tia as the second shooter for our wedding, I jumped at the chance, knowing it meant she would be able to do our hair and makeup, as well! I’m so, SO happy it worked out like it did, and can’t WAIT to experience the dynamic duo that is T&T Dynamite! Here’s a little more of Tia’s work to give you a sense of her magical (yes, magical) abilities:

Clearly, Tia is a pro at exactly the kind of romantic, modern updo I’m looking for, not to mention soft, natural makeup. Yippee!! If anyone could set me at ease about my wedding day look, it’s her. All of these photos were shot by my girl Tanja, too. These two make beauty together!

What do you think, ladies? How are you planning to wear your hair and makeup on your wedding day? Comment and let me know!

Emily, I love your hair inspiration pictures, the up-do’s are exactly what I want. But what I’m thinking about doing is have an up-do during the ceremony and pictures and then during the reception fix it so that it is half-up/half-down. I usually wear my hair down and free, so I understand how you want to make sure you “feel like yourself” and I thought this might be a nice middle ground. Get the best of both worlds, fancy up-do for your big-day and then be able to “let your hair down” during the reception.

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Laura! I love your idea! AND, since Tia will be with us all day, I’m sure she could manage a quick fix. Must think about this…

My makeup top priority is false eyelashes – my sister had some and it kicks up the glam 10 notches! I am doing very neutral taupes and browns on the eye with a shimmer highlight on the brow bone and one swipe of black liner on the top. Topping it off with some pretty bold pink lipstick! love her eyes – http://pinterest.com/pin/259660734735063192/

Hi Madelynne! Yes, I think I will go with false lashes, as well! I use to wear them all the time for dance performances :) Not sure if I’ll go with a full set or just individual lashes, though!

    • avatar Madelynne Miller reply

Emily: I’m doing individual for a more natural look :)

  4. avatar Lisa Edwards reply

I am in your same boat :) I do not wear much make up (just bronzer and light eye shadow) and for hair, I want a soft romantic look. I am thinking hair down with soft curls, or 1/2 up and 1/2 down with soft curls. However, I ike the first up do you posted. It is loose with Volume. I believe my best friend is going to do my make up because I have had bad experiences with make up artist making me look so different and like I came out of a night club. I can’t wait to see your pictures! You will look amazing!
