It is with so much joy that I introduce today’s Sweet Tea Sunday couple…not that they need introduction! Emily and John are one of the most genuine, sincere, intentional couples I know, and I have been doing my best to soak in as much wisdom from them as I can during my own engagement. All of us at Southern Weddings are inspired time and time again by how natural and evident their love and friendship is. Emily and John’s second wedding anniversary is coming up tomorrow, and I would love your help congratulating them on two beautiful years of marriage. Here’s to many more, E + J!

Tanja Lippert

You know that saying, find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life? Well, we like to switch it up a bit: marry your best friend, and you’ll never work a day in your marriage. That, of course, is not entirely true — even the best marriages have harder days and easier days — but if you truly LIKE your partner, and love spending time with him or her more than anyone else, everything else seems to fall into place. Or, at least, that’s been our experience! Other tips that have served us well throughout our eight years together: forgive again and again, and don’t hold a grudge (easier said than done). Put your partner before yourself in small things — it will help to have that muscle in shape when bigger things come around. Take great joy in surprising and delighting him or her. Always speak well to others about your spouse, and about marriage in general. Stay humble. And finally, because it’s one of the main causes of divorce and marital issues, get your financial house in order. If finances are simply not a cause of stress, you’ll have a huge leg up on life together.

Happy Birthday, Emily!

by in In The Office on

Oh, y’all. This girl. Where do we even begin? We love her more than sweet tea in summer and are overjoyed to wish her a very happy birthday today!!

You may already know Emily as a lover of classic weddings, mini food, and etiquette, and in honor of her birthday, we thought we’d share a bit more about why Emily is so special!

Merry: Emily is naturally positive and cheerful, and she is so much fun to be around! We especially love her always-witty comments and hilarious stories about her cats.

Adventurous: Emily and John have a reputation for going on frequent adventures—whether that means trying out fun restaurants, hiking new trails, or traveling to different cities. They do it all! We love their commitment to living life to the fullest and never being afraid to try something new.

Role model: Every single one of us looks up to Emily for her constant grace, poise, professionalism, and kindness. The phrase, “I want to be Emily when I grow up” has been said in the office more than once!

On the left: One of our favorite photos of Emily + John by Tanja Lippert from their wedding day! See their wedding here and here. On the right: Emily showing off her cute-as-pie Smilebooth skills.

Valuable: You may already know how much Emily does as far as creating amazing content for our blog and magazine, but there is also so much more that she does behind the scenes! She contributes an invaluable opinion to everything from ad sales to magazine layout and we don’t know what we would do without her every day.

Encouraging: Emily is quick to let people know when they’re doing something well, or to offer just the advice they need to help them do better. She is always thoughtful and sincere.

Loving: As well as loving on us through things like sweet treats and hugs (as you can see in the amazing picture below), Emily loves her husband, family, and friends so well, and isn’t afraid to show it.

On point: Whether she’s chatting with readers at an event or representing Southern Weddings in a business meeting, Emily knows how to be friendly and tactful all at once. We’ve never seen her flustered and admire how quickly she can adapt to changing situations with grace.

Unstoppable: This girl makes things happen. Whether she’s bringing an editorial shoot together in the rain or editing magazine pages long after the sun has gone down, her motivation to get things done and to do them well fires us up!

Smart: We always say that Emily is smarter than the rest of us. While we love her brain for random bits of etiquette advice and Bachelorette pop culture, we also love that she’s extremely logical, always keeping in mind lessons from the past while considering all points of view and potential opportunities in the future.

On the left: Graham Terhune snapped this shot of Emily crouched in muddy strawberry fields to protect our gorgeous gown for our Berry Bliss shoot. On the right: Emily being adorable during a blueberry picking outing with Eric Kelley.

In case you hadn’t noticed, all of these qualities line up to spell the number one adjective to describe Emily Thomas: marvelous!

Please join us in wishing Emily a very marvelous birthday today! Leave her some love in the comments section!

We experienced our fair share of April showers and pollen season, but last month was surely a beautiful one for the Southern Weddings ladies. Aside from many #SouthernDoin‘s, we prepped for our first V6 shoots and did plenty of celebrating. Here’s what we’ve been up to in and out of the office.

1. Marissa’s sock bun got fancy! Yes, she #putabowonit!

2. My little strawberry plant is doing well and sprouting out teeny berries!

3. Emily adored this punny mailing all the way from Owlabama.

4. Lara spent her April writing her first book proposal!

5. “It SNOWED! In April. IN the South,” said Kristin. “I made the most of it and put on my boots and put out a bowl to catch snow to make snow cream”

6. April was Southern Weddings’ birthday month. My desk was filled with all five volumes and lots of math while we calculated stats for our birthday graphics (here and here).

7. NC exploded into bloom in April, and we didn’t have to go farther than our office front door to find pretty flowers! This snap was taken on Emily’s midday walk.

8. Lara is changing her name! Deciding on her middle name has proven to be one of the hardest decisions.

9. Marissa about died when she received her monogram bracelet from Stacy Brown Designs! It’s monogram heaven!

10. For Emily, much of April was taken up by her honeymoon to Nevis — one of her favorite snaps!

11. Marissa sent many handwritten notes this month with her adorable new notecards! (Lettered by our own Emily Thomas!)

12. Kristin celebrated a very big birthday with sweet friends and a delicious cookie cake (her favorite).

13. Kristin indulged in a midnight snack in the form of a yummy Krispy Kreme doughnut!

14. Emily and John planted their balcony veggie/herb garden.

15. Lara and Ari told the story of their marriage and how love never fails during the Amazing Life Together webinar.

16. Lara and Grace took a trip down the road to visit some farm friends!

17. I hosted friends at my house for a weekend and played hostess by whipping up brunch!

18. Marissa officially became a Lululemon convert. She especially loves their manifesto on what’s most important.

What did y’all do in April? What were the highlights of your month?
