Hi belles! Our friend and former Southern Weddings intern Jessica Clinch is the newest gal to take you through her wedding process here on the blog! Jessica will be blogging for us once a month until her wedding next May. In case you missed her introductory post, be sure to check it out here! — Emily

There are about a million and one things to decide when planning a wedding. There are details and vendors that will enhance our wedding day, from music to food to flowers. And, there are vendors who will absolutely enhance our wedding day, but will also provide us with something to cherish days and years after our wedding, including our videographer and photographer.

Choosing a wedding photographer is a challenging task! There are so many incredibly talented photographers in the wedding industry, especially here in the South. Zack and I had to think long and hard about the qualities we want in our photographer. Hopefully the questions we considered below will be helpful to you if you are deciding between photographers, as well!

What style are we most drawn to, and what details stand out to us? The detail in a photographer that helped us narrow down our search dramatically was their photography style. There are a variety of photography styles, including classic portraiture style, documentary style, fine art photography style, and more. I have always been most drawn to the fine art style, and photographers who are able to capture all of the important and beautiful details of a wedding, but told from their unique creative eye. I adore the beauty and the process of film photography, and knew that was something special I wanted for our big day.

While looking through pictures from some of our favorite photographers, there were certain details that we looked for style-wise. One of the factors that was extremely important to us was the photographer’s ability to capture the details in white items clearly and crisply. I absolutely adore my wedding gown, and we wanted to know that our photographer would be able to truly showcase all of the gorgeous and intricate parts of the dress. We also knew we were more drawn to photography that has a light and airy quality, while still capturing the crisp details — a fine balance. And, we knew we preferred photos that have more of a blue undertone to them as opposed to really golden-toned photography. All of these style factors really helped us to narrow down our photographer options!

How comfortable will we be with our photographer? This question was a big one for us! We couldn’t determine this until actually meeting with a few photographers in person or over the phone, but feeling comfortable with our photographer is crucial! They will be the person who is with us during the most intimate moments of the best day of our lives. Being photographed can be awkward, so having someone who is really able to make us relax and enjoy ourselves will be very important!

How do they interact with our other vendors and guests? In the same sense, we really want a photographer who will be a joy to the other vendors on our wedding day: someone who will be respectful of our venue, who will work side-by-side with our planners, and who will get along wonderfully with our videographers. And, a photographer who will also know how to manage our bridal party and family members in a professional yet fun way!

So, which photographer did we choose? We are over the moon excited to say that we are working with the lovely Perry Vaile!! Perry fits all of the stylistic and personal details we desired. Her ability to capture images in a truly creative, artistic, unique manner is breathtaking. Each time she shares a new photo, I get so giddy to know that she will be bringing that same beauty to our wedding day! Her incredibly fun and bubbly personality was the icing on top of the cake. When we had our initial phone call with her, it felt like talking to a new best friend. You can tell how much she really values each of her clients, which is oh so special.

The funniest thing? I had seen Perry’s work previously, but hadn’t considered her originally as an option for our photographer since she lives in North Carolina. When Becca reached out to us recommending her, and saying that she would love to work with us, we were overjoyed! I would highly recommend not only looking in your city for a photographer, but also surrounding cities and possibly even surrounding states. We couldn’t be happier, and can’t wait for our engagement session with her that we are currently planning!

Talented, professional, compassionate vendors are the backbone of every smoothly running wedding day. When you hire people who are great at what they do AND good people to boot, your only job on your wedding day will be to act as a gracious hostess, love your family and friends well, and say “I do.” What a blessing! That’s why we’re passionate about our Blue Ribbon Vendors – because we want y’all to be worrying about those three things, and nothing else. Here are a few we’d love to introduce you to!

Name: Anna Kerns, Anna Kerns Photography
Where you call home: Frederick, Maryland
Favorite part of a wedding day? The quiet moment the bride and groom share together during portraits! As much as I love spending time with family and friends, I remember on my wedding day how refreshing and romantic it was to have some alone time as newlyweds. It’s a chance to take in all the excitement and joy of becoming husband and wife! Plus, your photographers will get some really sweet photographs for you to treasure for years to come.

Name: Christopher and Nancy Nolan, Weddings by Christopher & Nancy
Where you call home: Little Rock, Arkansas
Things you’d write home to your Momma about: We have been featured in a number of national and local wedding blogs and magazines like Style Me Pretty, Ruffled, Southern Brides Magazine, and Arkansas Bride Magazine, and have even photographed weddings in Hawaii, Boston, and Florida, but we are most proud of the relationships we have made with our couples. A lot of them have turned into longtime friends, and that’s the best thing.

Name: Mariah Diehl, Diehl Farms Events
Where you call home: Wimauma, Florida
How I got into weddings: Diehl Farms Events was created four years ago after Frank and Ora hosted their granddaughter’s wedding at the ranch. Ever since then we have opened our doors to public. All we ask is that you bring your imagination.

Name: Erica Luttmann, Hey Lovely Makeup
Where you call home: Deep in the heart of Houston (Texas, of course)
Favorite part of a wedding day? The prettifying part. The camaraderie between bride, her best friends, and relatives is special. And when the bride puts on her gown… Disney princess moment for sure!

Name: Julie Bunkley, Invision Events
Where you call home: Auburn, Alabama
How I got into weddings: After working with a sweet group of girls in college directing weddings on the side, I decided to turn it into a business for our area. It’s been non-stop ever since!

Name: Max LeBlanc, Sun in My Belly
Where you call home: Atlanta, Georgia
Best piece of advice you can give to brides and grooms? The best piece of advice we can provide to any couple is provide your guests with menu items that you love and want them to experience. Your guests all love you and they will love what you provide. The sky’s the limit.

Name: Mary Louise Kennedy, The Event Group
Where you call home: Auburn, Alabama
How I got into weddings: Honestly, as a company founded by a couple of guys, we never expected to get into weddings. However, we have never accepted anything less than perfection in the execution of an event, which naturally pulled us into the wedding business! We’ve always loved bringing a unique feel to every event and that has only grown for each wedding we’ve been a part of. The individuality that our team has been able to bring to each wedding has certainly played a big part in the growth of our wedding business.

Name: Ty McBrayer, Twirl Boutique
Where you call home: Lexington, Kentucky
Favorite part of a wedding day? The groom’s face when he sees his bride at the end of the aisle is an all time favorite moment of ours. It doesn’t matter if they’ve already shared a first look or not, his expression when he sees his soon to be wife in her gorgeous dress is one of pure delight and joy. That moment never ceases to send our hearts soaring!

Name: Tori Austin, Victoria Austin Designs
Where you call home: Fairhope, Alabama
Best piece of advice you can give to brides and grooms? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Always remember this day is about you, your fiancé, and the Lord. Do your research when booking vendors, sleep on it, and don’t hire on a whim!

Name: Angela Mazanti, Angela Mazanti Event Design
Where you call home: Memphis, Tennessee
Favorite part of a wedding day? That moment when what I have created specifically for the bride and groom is unveiled. I am a giver by nature. I give more than is expected and I give more than I promise. I just can’t help it – it’s the way that I’m wired.

Check out all of our favorite vendors in the Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory! I also wanted to mention that we’re working particularly hard to expand some of our areas of slim pickings – namely, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia. If you would like to recommend someone (or nominate yourself!) for any of these states, please email emily at southernweddings.com!

We’re just tickled to get to introduce y’all to a new set of Blue Ribbon Vendors each month, because we know any one of them would be a joy to you if you choose to work together! We’re using a few of our favorite BRV interview questions to help you get to know them. Click through to their listings to find out more about them and see all of our wonderful vendors!

Name: Sarah Joelle Furr, Sarah Joelle
Location/Coverage: Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida. Available worldwide.
Dream travel destination: Traveling makes my heart sing! Some of the places on the top of my list are Capri, the Amalfi Coast, Provence, and Santorini.

Name: Cassie Thibeaux, Southern Fete
Where you call home: Anywhere there’s oak trees and moss, generous hospitality, and a little Southern charm!
How I got into weddings: For as long as I can remember, I dreamed and planned my perfect wedding (and practiced walking down the aisle with a bath towel as a train… oh, you did that too?). When my husband and I moved to Lafayette from Baton Rouge after our dream wedding in 2012, I knew it was time for a career change. I craved a creative outlet that highlighted my passion for meticulous organization and immersed me in fast-paced situations that were never the same. I’ve never looked back.

Name: Stephanie Rachmeler, Stephanie’s Paper Shop
Where you call home: Atlanta, GA
Favorite thing about weddings in the South? Southern weddings have a charm unlike any other I’ve seen. They feel homey and inviting. That’s not to say they’re all informal, but rather, they all carry with them the Southern hospitality for which our region is known. You feel like you’re part of one big family, and at the end of the night, you’re a little tired, a little too full, and you’ve had a ball.

Name: Randi Smith, Sugar Euphoria
Where you call home: Raleigh, NC
How I got into weddings: You know the saying “born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth?” I’m convinced that I was born with a spatula and a whisk, since I come from a long line of bakers. However, I didn’t venture into the world of weddings until my husband encouraged me to sign up for a wedding expo. I’ve loved every minute of being a cake designer, from the consultations with sweet brides to the deliveries.

Name: Rachel Bridgwood and Lauren Anderson, Sweet Root Village
Where you call home: Alexandria, VA
Favorite part of a wedding day? Seeing everything come together after months of hard work! Aaaaand also putting flowers on the cake. We like cake.

Name: Nate and Jaclyn Kaiser, The Image is Found
Location/Coverage: Nashville/Worldwide
Things you’d write home to your Momma about: We were chosen as one of American Photo’s Top Ten Photographers.

Name: The Market at Grelen
Where you call home: Somerset, VA
Favorite thing about weddings in the South? Being from California, I just LOVE the “Southern charm” family and friends bring to every wedding in the South. I love seeing guests get all gussied up, whether it’s a black tie affair or a seersucker suit. I also love it when couples get creative with their signature cocktails and put a fun twist on a Southern classic.

Name: Lisa Formaro, The Sweet Trend
Where you call home: Cumming, GA
Best piece of advice you can give to brides and grooms? Fill the day with what is most important to you and your groom. You will love looking around and seeing all the special touches you took the time to add to your day and keep in your memories. It is just the beginning of a beautiful journey together.

Name: Virgil Bunao
Where you call home: Charleston, SC
Favorite part of a wedding day? Hmmm, the whole day. If I had to choose, I would say 15 or so minutes before the ceremony, when most people are scrambling, to about when the bride walks down the aisle. There tends to be A LOT of great moments during that time that I love capturing.

Name: Sara Fields, Wedding Connections
Where you call home: Asheville, NC
Best piece of advice you can give to brides and grooms? Remember that love is the most important detail of any wedding day.
