With about four months to go before our wedding day (whoo!), we’ve definitely moved from putting the big blocks in place to finalizing the smaller details, and I couldn’t be more excited! One such smaller detail I’ve been thinking about? My accessories! We’ve already discussed hair and makeup, but today I’d love to tell you about the pretty pieces that will complete the look.

To start with, let me just say that my accessories are bringing the “borrowed” in “something old, new, borrowed, and blue.” And I kind of love it! Of course I appreciate the cost savings that come with borrowing instead of buying, but I also love the sentiment of carrying my loved ones down the aisle with me.

One accessory that I will not be borrowing? My shoes! I debated long and hard over colored v. white, but in the end, white won out. After all, my favorite shoes have always been white ones – this Christian Louboutin pair in particular:

Both by Jose Villa

Since CL is out of my budget, internet searches for something similar brought me to the Nina site, and I quickly fell in love with a shoe called the Paladin. It had a fairly low heel (2.5 inches), was classic and ladylike, and featured a bow. I was in love! I was also devastated to find that when I went back to the Nina site a week later to make my purchase, the Paladin was nowhere to be found!! A call to customer service was not fruitful.

The wedding gods were shining on me, though, because when I tweeted my predicament, the Nordstrom Wedding gals came to my aid, directing me toward 6pm.com. How sweet is that, y’all?! That they would direct me away from their site and toward another just to assist a bride in need? Major kudos to them.

And yes, there was the Paladin, not only in stock and in my size, but 58% off Nina’s price!! My wedding heels cost $37, but I couldn’t love them more if they were $370. Seriously, these beauties make me SO happy. Here they are:

Mi Amore Foto

In case you were wondering, they are insanely comfortable. A 2.5 inch heel is the perfect height, in my opinion!

Okay, enough about shoes, let’s talk jewelry! The top of my gown is fairly involved, so I know I want to keep my jewelry fairly simple. Plus, I wear the same jewelry pretty much every single day: pearl studs, my engagement ring, a thin silver link bracelet, and a Dogeared necklace that was a gift from John for our first Christmas together. If I were to switch it up and wear something chunky or very obvious on our wedding day, the overall effect would be less stunning and more startling, I think. To that end, here’s some of the understated jewelry inspiration I’ve been collecting:

Earrings photo by Cooper Carras, kiss photo by Meg Smith, necklace photo by Charlotte Jenks Lewis via 100 Layer Cake, and up do photo by Heather Kincaid via Style Me Pretty

Short drop or simple cluster earrings and a simple necklace, and that’s it. I might add a bracelet if I’m feeling so moved. The earrings I will probably buy new, and the necklace will probably be my Dogeared one. UNLESS. See that simple gold and diamond number up there? That would be my dream wedding day gift from John :) With its price tag, it’s highly unlikely to happen, but a gal can dream, right? I just love that it’s a fancier version of the necklace I already treasure so much.

For those with a similar style, I put together a little shopping guide:

A. Kenneth Jay Lane CZ cushion cut studs ($49), B. Tiffany Diamonds by the Yard necklace in 18k gold ($615), C. J.Crew Crystal Starlet earrings ($35), D. J.Crew Pearl Jewel Box earrings ($68), E. Kate Ketzal Glow Drop earrings ($70), F. Nina Annabell earrings ($35), G. Kate Ketzal Adorable cushion cut earrings ($55), H. J.Crew Crystal Galaxy earrings ($55), I. Nina Passion earrings ($45), J. Tiffany Pearls by the Yard bracelet in 18k gold ($425), K. Jennifer hair comb, L. Bario-Neal single diamond bracelet ($750)

Now, what will I be wearing on my head? I don’t think I mentioned it in my dress shopping post, but I fell in love with a veil on my very first dress shopping excursion – the “Phoebe” by Sara Gabriel. I thought the horsehair trim was so unique, but still understated! I’ve never been able to get that veil out of my head, though its price tag has stayed firmly out of my budget, so a few weeks ago, I contacted Annette from Chaviano Couture about making a custom piece that involved my beloved horsehair. My future sister-in-law (who, if you remember, is getting married two months before me) and I are actually going to share the veil, and Annette has been great about incorporating both of our ideas. I won’t say too much more, but I am very excited to capture some gorgeous veil photos with Tanja!

Samm Blake via Style Me Pretty and Domenico Costantini via Martha Stewart Weddings

Since our veil is going to be fairly long, and our reception involves a lot of mingling, I’ll probably remove it post-ceremony, or at least post-reception entrance. I’ve been toying with the idea of adding a simple comb, kind of like the below:

Christian Oth and Jillian Mitchell via 100 Layer Cake

A few weeks ago my friend Nancy saw me pinning hair combs left and right, and kindly offered to lend me the one she wore on her wedding day. Score another one for the “borrowed” list!

And to round out my borrowed offerings, I will be toting this lovely clutch from my friend (and former SW editor!) Katharine. This beauty is from Davie & Chiyo for any of y’all who might like to purchase one for yourself!

Photo by Bryan Johnson from Katharine’s wedding

And that about takes care of that! Tell me, belles: How are you accessorizing on your wedding day? Simple and classic, or colorful and bold? Comment and let me know!

Up next: I’ll share our engagement photos!

I love your style Emily. As a matter of fact, I have shoes in purple velvet that look very much like them. I purchased them at DSW and love the couture-like bow!

Secondly, I’m totally a romantic, billowy, cathedral-length veil girl. I had a fingertip veil but wasn’t satisfied so I had the bridal shop add a cathedral layer.

Thirdly, you must check out some Stella & Dot jewels! I think you would LOVE the sparkly and elegant Glint Flower Necklace $39 & matching Glint Flower studs $39 seen in Instyle Weddings or the Deco Drop Earrings $44 and Harlow Bangle $32, that have been favorites with my brides. I’m a statement piece girl so the Metropolitan Mixed Chain necklace $198 or the Petra bracelet $98 were more my speed. :-)

I absolutely love the Phoebe veil. That is my splurge for my wedding. It’s so beautiful!!

Hi ladies + gents! It seems like almost as soon as I finish writing one “Emily Plans a Wedding” post, the next one is on my doorstep (even though they’re scheduled two weeks apart – yikes!). Time marches on, does it not?

Yesterday, I was SO excited to skip out on work early to drive out to Nitsa’s in Winston-Salem and try on my dress for my first fitting!! My Mom was able to come, even though she lives in Connecticut, and we had a great time together. I still love my dress (whew!), it fit well (double whew!), and the only alterations that are needed are a hem, a (13-point!) bustle, and cups (of course).

BUT we’re actually not talking about my wedding fashion today, we’re talking about John’s! John will be wearing a tux, a decision he made on his own but that I was perfectly amenable to. I think he looks handsome in anything, but I would concede that he looks particularly debonair in a tuxedo, as do most gents.

A Bryan Photo

As soon as we knew he would be wearing a tuxedo, we knew we would be buying, and not renting. There were a few reasons for this:

1. He has to wear a tuxedo for two weddings this summer, and likely more in the future, so it made sense for us financially.
2. A great fit was very important to us, and you can’t tailor a rental. Grooms in baggy tuxedo pants make me sad!
3. We had a specific style of tuxedo in mind, and we didn’t think we’d find it at a rental shop.

Ashley McCormick via Southern Weddings

As I mentioned, we had a specific tuxedo aesthetic we were going for, and it was largely based off of two things: the J.Crew tuxedo (which is very sharp, but very expensive), and this handy New York Times graphic which has been floating around Pinterest.

Our first choice was in the lapel style. There are three options: shawl, peak, and notch. Shawl is the most old-school, while notch is more understated and business-like. We went for peak.

Top two images are shawl collar tuxedos from Katharine’s wedding by A Bryan Photo. Below, on the left is a peak lapel (photo by A Bryan Photo), and on the right is a notch lapel tuxedo (photo by Adam Barnes via Southern Weddings)

We were also looking for a two-button jacket and a shirt with a point collar.

For accessories, we vetoed both vests and cummerbunds in favor of suspenders for a more clean, modern, and fuss-free look. And all you Southern ladies will be pleased to know that John will be tying his own black bow tie! (Well, maybe with some help from Dad… or this handy SW graphic!)

Amanda Rae Photography via Style Me Pretty and A Bryan Photo

So we knew what we wanted, but not where to find it. Enter Marget’s fiance, who wears tuxedos frequently for work (fancy!) and is something of an expert. He recommended the Tommy Hilfiger tuxedos at Macy’s as a reasonably-priced option of good quality. On the day we cruised over to the Macy’s site to check things out, the tuxedo that caught our eye just so happened to be 66% off! With free shipping and free returns, we didn’t hesitate to snap one up in John’s size. For those that are curious, we bought this jacket and these pants, and this shirt. We’re still on the hunt for the perfect bow tie, suspenders, and shoes!

Jessica Lorren

So we have a tux – yahoo! Now all that’s left is to get it tailored, and to add a little personalization. Who says belles are the only ones who get to have fun with embroidery and monogramming? We haven’t decided yet exactly how we’ll add some pizazz, but embroidering the inside of the jacket is at the top of my list:

Lisa Poggi

What will your groom be wearing on his wedding day? If he’s wearing a tuxedo, which lapel style did you choose? Will you be renting or buying? Please comment + let me know!

I love that peaked lapel! We thought about going with tuxedos for my handsome groom but with a wedding date at the end of July and the East Tennessee humidity, We will probably be putting the whole wedding party (well at least the gentlemen) in seersucker! I’m super excited but have a few groomsmen that are not quite as excited as we are yet… We’re working on that :) I’m also having trouble knowing where to find a good quality seersucker that fits in a modest budget. Any ideas?

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Hannah! Considering your location and date, seersucker sounds like the perfect choice for your wedding! I don’t have a great option for good, reasonably-priced seersucker, but I’m going to check with the other gals in the office and will get back to you if we come up with anything!

Hannah: Joseph A Banks has good inexpensive Seersucker

Thanks Emily for all your advice my fiance wants to have a custom tuxe made, but I am going to show him this one from Macy’s. I love it. We are also going to let our groomsmen wear what they have no need to make them spend extra if they already own one.

    • avatar AmandaR reply

Hannah: If you are in or around Knoxville, try Coachman Clothiers, Brooks Brothers or John H. Daniel, and maybe American Clothing. My wedding is in Knoxville June 9th and the guys all ordered custom suits from http://www.studiosuits.com. They have TONS of fabrics, cuts, price ranges, and quick production time. I’ve seen the final product and it is pimp. That was the fiance’s way of letting his groomsmen and ushers invest in something nice, as opposed to renting an awkward tux that was only $50-100 less anyways.

  2. avatar Amanda reply

So glad you for your dress at nitsa’s in Winston! I did too!!! But as soon as I saw your tweet about the tux at Macy’s I sent the link to my fiancé. He’s so tiny that renting is not an option! So I am in the same boat! I am curious as to what the groomsmen are doing though. My family is stuck on the idea that everyone has to match which is making everything so difficult! (everyone from my mom to his is complaining about this.) so we ordered a tux from topman and see how that fits. Not super nice material but no friends weddings in the future either.. Love to hear your thoughts on your men! And congrats on all the wedding success so far!!

    • avatar Emily reply

Yay Nitsa’s! For the groomsmen, we gave them the option of either renting or buying, or wearing a tux they already have. We’re not so concerned about everyone matching exactly, but I can sympathize with you! I pointed the ones who were interested in renting towards the new Vera Wang line at Men’s Wearhouse, because they look like they have a more modern/slim fit!

  3. avatar Theresa reply

Congrats Emily on your first dress fitting going so smoothly! I have mine this Sunday! We opted for light gray suits in a lightweight fabric due to an outside wedding on Hilton Head Island in July.

  4. avatar Bri @ Posh Purpose reply

I know how wonderful it feels to have the groom squared away (mostly!). My beau can’t rent or even buy off the rack because he has an athletic build, think 6’4″ man with a 6’10” wing span – wonderful for swimming, but terrible for clothing him! Fortunately, we caught the 20% off made to measure event at Brooks Brothers and had a charcoal grey herringbone suit made. He particularly loves the special suit lining in MIT colors, our alma mater. It just arrived yesterday and I am so excited to see it this weekend!

I decided that it would be silly to buy a tux for him since he will probably never need one again, and I also prefer men in grey ;) That being said, I am still debating between suits or tuxedos for the groomsmen. The local shop in town has a grey suit for rent, but I do love that Vera Wang line. Either way I am not concerned about the groomsmen matching the groom perfectly. I figure since it is expected for me to look different from the bridesmaids, then it should be fine for the groom to not match the wedding party.

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Bri! Very interesting! Your groom’s suit sounds wonderful – love the custom lining! I’ve never really seen a groom in a suit while the groomsmen are in tuxes, and while I’m totally fine with the groomsmen dressing differently than the groom, I don’t know how I feel about them being more formal than him. Maybe let them wear their own gray suits, if you’re not concerned about them all matching perfectly? I’ve seen that done before, and it looks great!

Hi ladies and gents! As most of you know, we rarely feature guest posts on Southern Weddings (except for our lovely Southern Brides of the Month, of course!). That being said, we think you’ll enjoy this one. Courtney, from the popular party planning blog Pizzazzerie, is a Southern girl herself, and she’s planning a Southern wedding in Nashville this June. We asked her to drop by and share some of what’s inspiring her while planning her most personal party to date! — Emily

Hey, y’all! I’m visiting from Pizzazzerie to share some inspiration for my own wedding, which is on June 23 in Nashville, TN! It’s only a few months away (eek!), so I’m knee deep in all things Southern + wedding right now. Growing up in Charleston, SC and Raleigh, NC, I absolutely knew I wanted Southern influences in my wedding. However, being a blogger in the party/wedding realm makes things very hard when narrowing down and focusing in. So does Pinterest. Finally, however, I settled on a Kate Spade + J.Crew preppy look featuring kelly green and black/white stripes. Here’s some of what’s inspiring me:

Both images by JMM Photography, with planning by Yellow Canary Events

What I love about these gorgeous photos is the black and white striped ribbon detailing for paper goodies. This is an absolute must! My other favorite? The bow tie napkin – hello, LOVE! And bow ties are inherently Southern, making these perfect for my place settings.

On the left: from Traditional Home. On the right: photo by Barnaby Draper Studios with design by JL Designs

Along with the touches of black + white stripes, I want a lot of greenery and pure white florals. I’ve been busy collecting several white pillars and “urn” pieces, like those above, to decorate our tables. Moss wreaths will hang from the back of the venue doors. (Our reception is at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, which guarantees us a lot of green!).

White peonies bundled together make an absolute gorgeous bouquet, don’t y’all think? Tie on a black + white striped ribbon and you have my wedding bouquet! My bridesmaids will also have white bouquets, just slightly smaller.

On left: photo by Jesse Leake via Style Me Pretty. On right: photo by A Bryan Photo via Southern Weddings

Their darling shoes are black, with a peep toe and have a bow! Swoon! …Now if only I could find the perfect wedding shoes, too.

A Bryan Photo

My ladies will wear cocktail-length Kelly green dresses by Alfred Sung for Dessy. (Note: The SW gals couldn’t resist adding in this image from our past issue. Isn’t it perfect for Courtney??)

Agnes Lopez Photography via Style Me Pretty

At our wedding, we’ll have white chivari chairs with black cushions, but this picture with the striped ribbon has me thinking about incorporating a bit of ribbon detailing into the head table chairs – or my chair & Chris’ chair! Cuteness!

On the left: photo by Kate Headley. On the right: photo by Ryan Ray.

Children are a big part of my life, and I will have three flower girls and one ring bearer with me on the big day. My little ring bearer was actually a part of my surprise proposal, so I’m oh-so-excited to put him in a little black and white striped bow tie for his strut down the aisle at Vanderbilt University’s chapel!

On the left: photo by Jake McBride for Christian Oth Studio. On the right: favor by Amorology Weddings.

Favors are a total must at any event I throw, so my wedding will just kick it up a notch! I can’t decide on one favor, so I’ll likely have several. My Mom has been an inspiration for me in the world of parties and entertaining for years. I can remember sitting up on the kitchen counter and creating gorgeous pressed sugar eggs for Easter with her. For our wedding, she turned the idea into a mini wedding cake that opens up to hold little mints or other confectionery treats. I can’t wait to box up these baby wedding cakes for guests! I also think that black and white cookies will make an appearance somehow — they are my fave, and happen to fit our theme quite perfectly, don’t you think?

So there you have it! What do you think? I hope you love my wedding inspiration, and I can’t wait to have pictures back after the big day!

Thank you so much, Courtney! Belles, be sure to pop over to Pizzazzerie for more party inspiration, and to follow along with Courtney as she plans for the next few months!
