Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

Y’all, tell me, what is better than the weekend? Few things compare, except say, the weekend + close friends + ice cream + movies. That’s a winning combination! You know what I’ll be doing tomorrow and Sunday. Before you take off with your fantastic plans, let’s round-up the week!

We’ve had sooo many great things appear on the blog this week! First up was one of our favorites, the Southern Bride of the Month! Bride-to-be, Lauren met her fiance in kindergarten and is now planning her dream Texas wedding! (Really, y’all, she’s been collecting inspiration since high school!)

Emily gave y’all a little sneak peek behind the scenes of our latest photo shoot for V4 with Katie Stoops. Remember that time Sierra modeled as a bridesmaid? I do!

To hold us all over until V4 hits the stands, Marissa shared her favorite feature from V3, Something Blue by Jose Villa. She wanted to live in the blue and white gorgeousness from these spreads! Take a look and you’ll understand why.

Y’all know the South is steeped in tradition, so over the next few months, Marissa is going to give us all a history lesson! (We will admit, there are a few that we’re still curious about.) First up? The groom’s cake! Go to the original post to learn all about this yummy tradition.

Emily’s engaged! I can’t say it enough, I’m so excited! A few weeks ago, we asked you for your opinion on engagement rings. Now, Emily’s back to share her engagement story and ring hunt! Read all about it here.

Vendors, we issued you our first “Ultimate Southern” challenge this week! We want to know your most creative ideas for escort cards! We hope that brides everywhere will be executing these ideas soon enough! Go to the original post to get more details on how to submit.

Calling all Southern bride bloggers! We’re setting up a new page on the Southern Weddings blog for all you fellow bloggers. Tell us a little more about yourself and find out how to get on the page here!

We know there’s a ton to think about and do when you’re planning a wedding. I hope I can make it a little bit easier with my new How-To column! Read up on how to send your invitations here, where I gave you the basics on calligraphy, envelopes, mailing and stamps!

We know you can’t resist a photo booth! This week’s giveaway is going to help you make those silly photos even more fun! Say Cheese! Paper Props are the perfect addition to your wedding’s photo booth and you could win a specially made kit for Southern Weddings! Go to the original post to enter.

Emily spotted Southern utensil wrappings this week! These cowboy boot utensil packets are just so darn cute!

This week, Marissa is dishing out some tidbits about herself. We love Marissa! I think you will too when you Sit a Spell with her and get to know this fabulous lady!

Sierra shared Meg + Josh’s love story and wedding in this week’s Real Wedding Gallery. We’re crazy for the red and yellow details!

Take a look at this week’s Real Wedding!

Mary + Austin’s colorful backyard wedding had me wishing I’d been invited! Check out their Southern bash here and here.

You’ve (sort-of) seen the dress; now it’s time for everything else!  Read along as we take you through Katharine’s classically beautiful hair, makeup, and accessory choices.

From Katharine: Of all the decisions I’ve had to make during our engagement, “the look” was one of the hardest, for two reasons.  Problem 1: I have short(er), fine hair, and don’t usually wear it up – except when I’m in a rush in the morning, and don’t have time to make myself pretty for Emily + Lara.  My hair doesn’t hold much curl, isn’t long and thick like some of you lucky brides, and tends to look even thinner when pulled back.  Problem 2: The asymmetric neckline of my dress seemed to demand a simple up-do.

So there I was, a few months before the big day, struggling to figure out what, exactly, I was going to do with my lackluster hair.  Cue the sad, hopeless music. While I wasn’t sure how it was going to happen, I knew I wanted a simple, classic style that 1.) didn’t look too “bridal,” 2.) didn’t call attention to my hair woes and 3.) would stay in place for as much of the day as possible.

Another problem?  Even after four years of college up North, I didn’t have a go-to stylist ready to work their magic on me.  And trust me: magic will have to happen to get me wedding-ready.

From Emily: Oh please.  Miss Katharine is making this situation sound much worse than it is.  Y’all have seen her — she’s gorgeous!  The fact that Katharine didn’t have a go-to special occasion hair stylist in Boston left the field wide open for us to bring in an expert from afar.  Knowing that, we both came to the same conclusion almost immediately: Scoobie.  Hubert “Scoobie” West was one of our very favorite vendors from last fall’s Serenbe shoot, and we both agreed that he was funny, soft-spoken, easy-going, and easy to get along with — just the sort of person you’d want around on your wedding day.  Add to that his impeccable hair and makeup styling abilities, and we had a winner worth flying up the East Coast for Katharine’s wedding weekend.

From Katharine: Even hair geniuses require some direction, so here are the images I sent Scoobie.  What do you think?  Any style tips you lovely ladies can share with me to transform flat hair into wedding day fab?

Image credits, clockwise from top left: Zimbio, unknown, The Knot, The Knot, Project Wedding, Project Wedding, Ann Hamilton via The Bride’s Cafe, Project Wedding, personal photo

From Emily: With hair and makeup in capable hands, it was on to accessories.  The Elke in black by Nina was a (fairly) easy choice for Katharine, and knowing her affinity for sparkly things, not a surprising one.

While Katharine will be rocking the black heels above, each lady will be wearing the shoes of her choice.  (I’ve picked gold!)  Since we’re donning long dresses, they’ll only be peeking out from under the hem, if visible at all.  I’m thinking our selections might look something like this:

From left to right: Whitebox Weddings, Meg Perotti, Jose Villa

My pre-wedding present to Katharine was the Davie & Chiyo All About a Bow clutch in snow.  She’d been pining for it ever since we featured it in the last issue’s Fab Finds section, but never pulled the trigger.  Happy wedding day, Katharine!

For jewelry, she’ll be wearing a double-stranded pearl bracelet, her engagement ring, and her signent ring with her given initials (she’s not changing her name!) — no necklace, so as not to compete with the neckline of her dress.  Here’s where we need your help: Katharine would love to wear earrings, but due to an unfortunate sister-related accident when she was younger, she can’t wear pierced earrings anymore.  (Thanks, Bissy!)  Do any of y’all have a great source for beautiful clip ons?  We’re thinking small drops or pretty studs, preferably featuring pearls.

From Katharine: Seriously, friends: help a fellow bride-to-be out!  Something I’m 100% set on, though?  My gorgeous, ultra-romantic veil from Chaviano Couture!  The one and only veil I tried on was a lovely lace-lined veil from Homa.  Randy Fenoli hand-selected the veil for my dress, and while I didn’t think I’d ever pair a vintage-inspired accessory with my crisp, ultra-simple gown, I ended up loving the bit of extra flair the veil gave my gown.

I loved the veil Randy selected – but not it’s price tag, sadly.  Luckily, I knew a lovely lady who could custom make just about anything.  Way back in January, Annette Thurmon, the owner and lead designer of Chaviano Couture, and I started sketching out my dream veil.  Here was some of our inspiration:

Image credits, clockwise from top left: personal photo, unknown, Snap! Photography, and A Bryan Photo

We’re still hammering out the final specs as we round the corner into the one-month countdown, but here’s what we’re thinking: a 9 or 10′ cathedral-length veil, edged in a vintage, one-of-a-kind French lace.  We’ll have a thicker lace border along the bottom, and thinner, more whimsical pieces decorating the sides.  So as not to detract from the simplicity of the gown or the way-fun asymmetric neckline, we’ll be stopping the lace around my knees.  As Annette aptly put it, the veil will make a statement when I walk in the church, but can be bustled for a more fun and flirty look during the reception.  Victory!  Annette is actually cutting the lace for my veil from an older wedding dress — cool, huh?  Here’s our source material:

Take a peek at Annette’s design center here.  I can’t recommend the endlessly patient and stunningly beautiful Ms. Thurmon enough!  Of course, we’ll be sure to share pictures of her completed masterpiece as soon as we have them.

Weigh-in: How did you wear your hair for the big day?  Any super-secret styling tips brides with fine, shorter hair can share with our Katharine?

Up next? Ceremony talk!  Ceremonies are something Katharine feels very strongly about (shocker, right?), and she’s excited to discuss with y’all.

Check out Premier jewelry! They have a style of earrings that is clip-po (the post folds down so you can wear them as clips). Anyway, its beautiful and affordable and they're a great Christian company. They have sellers like Avon so you would have to contact one to see their products and purchase but the company can locate one for you. I highly recommend you check their jewelry out! Their golden guarantee is worth the research: [ http://www.premierdesigns.com/direct_sales_jewelry/jewelry.php ]Hope it helps!

Katharine! You and I are hair sisters! And earring sisters, I had the same issue! Anyways, back to the hair, I used almost the exact same picture with the two toned hair as inspiration for my bridesmaid look for a wedding I was in back in June. It worked perfectly and even my poof stayed during some miserable Texas heat! Good luck!

I too found the picture 3rd row on the right from the knot…..and LOVED it for my amsale wedding dress (i wore an all ivory taylor, also seen in the hangover and when in rome). i pined over this hair do for months and showed my stylist. i was concerned about where the hair would go when tucked and even considered cutting my hair to just the right length for this updo. my talented stylist played for 2 hours in the salon to get this look to no avail…..no matter what we did it never looked like the picture. i wish the knot would post how this stylist got this look!!!! i decided to go with a classic french twist and loved it.ps. i also wore a catherdral length veil (my moms from 30 years ago that my grandmother made!!) and i strongly advise taking your veil off at the reception (even if it can be bustled short) i think a veil worn at the reception doesn't look right, and while a bride is still all done up and beautiful it looks a little more relaxed to remove the veil. i replaced it with a flower that matched my dress paired with some feathers!!!!June 2010 bride

Mary, it's good to know I'm not the only bride with wedding hair woes! After hearing about your success, I'm crossing my fingers for a similar outcome. I'd love any tricks or tips you have :)Jenna – a how-to section would be SO helpful! I'm sure your French twist was gorgeous. Sometimes simple is best. And thank you for your tip on the veil. It's nice to hear from another cathedral-veil wearing bride.Love, Katharine @ SW

Katharine- I've loved reading your adventures throughout the wedding planning process. I wanted to recommend going to antique stores or flea markets (the ones that carry antiques) for classic, perfect clip-ons. 80% of the antique earrings I have are clip-on, and you can get such lovely time-tested styles. I bought my best friend a pair that resembled Audrey Hepburn's in Roman Holiday (all for the grand price of $1!). And as for hair (mine's pretty fine as well), Bumble & Bumble's thickening spray can do wonders. Other hair suggestions: Hot-rolling it before you get it done (the waves pump up volume and make styling easier), blow-drying upside down, velcro rollers (roll roots after hair is mostly dry, spritz with hairspray, blow dry until completely dry, remove rollers and finger-separate hair). You're going to be such a beautiful bride!PS, those bridesmaids dresses you picked out are to die for! That post was one of my all-time favorites. :)

By now y’all know that Katharine doesn’t get as excited by the same things as most brides.  Wedding dress?  Eh.  Photographer?  Eh.  (Though we do LOVE Bryan!) But paper? Yep, Katharine was all about the paper.

From Katharine: Like so many aspects of my wedding, I had a very clear idea of the kind of invitation I wanted to send to family and friends before our big day.  Blame it on growing up in a household where children’s birth announcements were sent on heavy, engraved paper from Crane’s in either black or gold script, and where traditional wording was a must, but for me, there never was any real question about the invites.

My father, who knows me and my style better than almost anyone, summed it up best during our first discussion about wedding suites.  It went a little something like this:

Katharine: “So, Dad, it’s about time to order invitations.”

Dad Waterman: “Well good, that’s simple.  You really only have two decisions to make: white or ecru paper, and black or gold ink.”

There never was any discussion about fun embellishments, embossed monograms or bow accents.  Just paper and ink color, and we were set.  (For the record: I’m fairly certain Dad and I are carbon copies of each other, which is awesome for a girl planning a wedding with her father.)

So, ecru it was.  And I was this close to going with gold script (which, in truth, got Dad’s vote for its rich and regal look), when I opted for ultra-traditional black in a last minute identity crisis.  I still love gold lettering, but couldn’t be happier with our black and white invites.

From Emily: Paper is near and dear to my heart.  Though I took Katharine’s criteria seriously, I wasn’t going to go down without a fight (so to speak) on this one.  Though I suggested many lovely ways of updating her traditional themes, she never bit, alas.  Maybe one of you will be able to benefit from my round up?

Image credits, top to bottom: Lilikoi Design + Letterpress, betsywhite stationery boutique, b.t. elements, and Bella Figura

My best hope was Laura Hooper’s suite, with its striking black envelope, but that was a no-go, too.  Okay, then, Katharine, how about some lovely hand-painted gold edging, courtesy of Bella Figura?  No?

From Katharine: Emily suggestions were ridiculously gorgeous – and pretty darn spot-on for a nuts and bolts girl having an evening wedding – but I’m the Anti-Bride, remember?  Naturally, I didn’t stray too far from my original vision of the perfect wedding invitation.  (Emily loves me regardless, though, so all’s well!)

With style settled, the next question was where to find my very simple, but very specific invitations.  Crane’s seemed like the obvious choice, but – truth be told – I’m all about the bottom line.  When I discovered that Birchcraft Studios offered virtually indistinguishable invites (at a fraction of the cost, mind you) and that Your Invitation Place offered further online discounts, I was sold!  (Dad was a pretty happy camper, too.)

If this all seems too easy, you’re right.  While the design was almost a given, the precise wording was anything but.  (Just ask my dad and Emily, who, between the two of them, patiently fielded dozens of emails filled with nuanced questions: How should we word our response cards?  Triple panel or basic flat card?  To include reception info on the invitation or not?  The list goes on.  We ultimately – even if not painlessly – got it all figured out.  I won’t bore you with the rest of the tedious details (I saved those for Dad + Em), but if you have questions or are just curious, I’m happy to share!

The final result?

“Boring,” says my sixteen-year-old sister, Bissy.

“Perfect,” insists the bride.  (It’s my vote that matters most, right?  Right.)

From Emily: One thing Katharine and I were agreed upon was calligraphy: her ultra-formal, ultra traditional invitations were calling for it.  Being the classic kind of girl she is, loopy girly fun styles were out, and graceful script was in.  But the price?  Yipes.  I’ve seen outer envelopes for up to $8 an envelope (and I’m sure someone somewhere is charging much more than that), and though I can hardly argue that beautiful script is worth at least that much, it wasn’t going to fly with our bride.

Enter Carmela.  While doing my daily perusal of Weddingbee, I stumbled onto a post by one Miss Hamster, who used Carmela for her own envelopes.  Her lettering was lovely, and at $0.80 per envelope set (yes, really!!), the price couldn’t be beat.  One quick email to Katharine, and then to Carmela, and the deal was done.  If you’d like to jump on the Carmela bandwagon, too, you can email her at melsinkwell at comcast dot net (she doesn’t have a website).

From Katharine: Here’s another Anti-Bride confession: Paper goods make me nervous.  Now, I’m all about going all-out for the invites.  But menus and place cards?  Those are harder for me to justify.  I cringe at the thought of beautiful, handmade menus getting a quick once-over and then being tossed out. (Chalk another one up to my father, who diligently and dutifully recycles like nobody’s business.)  Emily understood my hesitation about wasting paper and resources, but suggested escort cards were a practical must.  Fine: 1 point for Emily. But if we were going to have escort cards, they had to be simple and match the overall feel and design of my invites.

Since she was so gung-ho about them, I turned to The Paper Queen for advice on the place cards, not knowing whether or not she’d be able to find what I was looking for.  (In fairness, I hadn’t given her much direction.)  Did she succeed?

From Emily: Seriously, people, sometimes I don’t know where this stuff comes from.  But as soon as Katharine asked me for placecard suggestions, I instantly thought of Ashley and Chris’s September 2008 wedding, shot by April Smith and featured on Style Me Pretty.

She’s incorporating subtle gold accents and has a soft spot for wax seals, and this inspiration photo combines both.  We’ve ordered stock from Paper Presentation and are waiting for an opportune evening to break out the paper cutter and the matches. Craft night, anyone?

Weigh-In: What do you think about Katharine + Emily’s respective picks?  How would you have answered Dad Waterman’s invitation query: white or ecru, black or gold?

P.S. While their invitations are 100% basic black-and-white (pun intended!), KatharineKyle’s save-the-date from Wedding Paper Divas was all fun.  We bet you can guess who picked out these too-cute cards…

Up next? The post you’ve all been waiting for — FLOWERS!  Has Katharine loosened up her white rose strictures?  You’ll just have to wait until next week to see…

I just have to say how much I am enjoying this series of posts. I wish I had known about this blog while I was wedding planning, but you can bet that the first issue (which came out just in time) was dog eared from all the inspiration I found in it! It is actually the only wedding magazine that I saved.I also had engraved ecru invitations in the black Rook font. I went with another vendor though, Reaves Engraving. The best part is they engrave on Cranes paper, at a fraction of the cost. I can’t imagine that y’all don’t already know about them, but it’s also neat that they are a Southern vendor, too!
