Hey, y’all! I just got back from New York City, where I was reveling in one of my favorite weeks of the year – the week of the National Stationery Show!! For four days, stationers and designers big and small converge on a massive convention center in Manhattan. They set up adorable booths displaying their best and newest designs, and then buyers (from both online and brick and mortar stores) and members of the press (like me!) walk the floor checking everything out. It’s bliss, I tell you!

I did my best to capture the gloriousness with my iPhone and tweets in the moment, but thankfully photographer Cyn Kain was at my side doing what she does best. Her photos showcase the beautiful designs far better than mine ever could!

We’ve got a lot to cover, so let’s get started!

Our first booth of the day – Jan Sevadjian! I was all tingly with excitement at this point. Jan makes beautiful silk-wrapped photo albums and keepsake boxes that would be perfect for the classic bride.

The Macbeth Collection is a preppy’s paradise – for real, y’all. There pattern play is amazing, and I loved all the monogrammed goodness! Marissa tweeted that she hoped I would sneak one of the bins out for her, and I would have, if only I thought it would have fit under my shirt. Maybe next time? And how perfect would these be holding ceremony programs, or cold drinks at the reception, or given as bridesmaid gifts? Perfectly perfect.

There was so much fun ephemera – most of it glittery – at Tinsel Trading. I particularly loved the glitter letters (which would be so cute used in chair back decor, like at this wedding) and the cheerful ceremony or exit flags.

Cyn and I both loved these romantic heart-shaped cards from Oblation Papers & Press. Such beautiful letterpress!

Oh my! Next up was the Lifeguard Press booth, home of the one and only Lilly Pulitzer. It was almost too much pink to handle! (But not really, I totally loved it :) We didn’t snap a pic of them, but there were the most adorable patterned iPhone cases on display!

I loved the design of Smudge Ink’s booth, and I enjoyed looking through their new wedding albums, too. Their gift wrap and cards were adorable! (Photo on the bottom left nabbed from Nole of Oh So Beautiful Paper!)

Thank you so much to Cyn for these great photos! I’ll be back with much more soon!

Cyn Kain is a fabulous member of our Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory!

I would love to go to the NSS one day. Emily, I love your tunic. Is it Boden?

Hi Elizabeth! Why, thank you so much! Yes, it’s Boden :)

All of the booths look like such fun! I am currently on the hunt for horse racing/keeneland themed invites, do you ladies have any suggestions on where I might be able to find or design something along those lines?

    Thanks!

Hi Mary Kate! I didn’t spot anything ready-made at the show that fits what you’re looking for, but my best advice would be to get in touch with Belle & Union (coming up in my recaps next week!). They have an amazing Southern sensibility, and I’m sure they’d design something you’d love!

Thanks for sharing! The Macbeth Collection is my favorite! I love, love all of their stuff. I have the utensil holder that I have used to hold my pens at work for the last six years. I always get so many compliments on it.

Y’all, my mom can sew anything. Amazing quilts and intricate Halloween costumes are among the many awesome things she makes, but according to my brother in law, the best thing she’s ever produced are the custom (read: manly!) bean bags for his cornhole game.

Cornhole, bean bag toss, baggo, or — for my northern friends — bags is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bean bags at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. But y’all already knew that, I’m sure! A corn bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the platform scores one point. The object of the game is to be the first player to reach 21 points.

There’s actually very little information on this Southern staple’s history, but there’s LOTS of debate over its origin. One story claims that the game was created in the Kentucky farmlands, and another that it originated in the 14th century in Germany.

No matter where it was invented, I’m happy to see it taking root in the South, and especially at weddings! I mean, come on! A custom monogrammed cornhole platform? Can it get any better? Besides debuting your married monogram (which is a good enough reason for me!), a cornhole “court” is the perfect place for guests to mingle during cocktail hour or the reception! You’ll definitely find out who the competitive ones are :)

What’s your favorite lawn game? Cornhole? Bocce ball? Will guests be playing lawn games at your wedding?

P.S. Check out our cornhole Pinterest collection for even more lawn game goodness!

I love cornhole! I gave my fiance a set of boards for Christmas last year and we’re always inviting people over to play! I’m hoping to have two sets at our wedding reception for our guests to play.

LOVE cornhole! Whenever we get together my whole family plays tournaments. At my wedding there will for sure be some rounds of cornhole! The monogrammed boards are so cute!

gail: My wife and I design and make wedding cornhole sets and sell them through our Etsy shop. http://www.stylemycorntoss.com :) We have several stock designs, some personalized sets, as well as a listing fully customizable boards. Apparently we haven’t been doing a good enough job marketing our sets, we haven’t even made it onto Marissa’s Pinterest board yet. :(

I am having an outdoor, tented wedding. I’ve always wanted an outdoor, tented wedding. But truthfully? It scares me a little.

My wedding is not being held in perpetually sunny California. It’s also not being held in the warm, stable South. Nope, it’s being held in temperamental, often stormy New England. And on the weekend of our wedding day last year? Hurricane Irene came to town. That’s enough to give any gal a few gray hairs!!

I know that nothing I do, including – or especially! – worrying, will change the weather on that day. And I am fairly confident that if we do get less-than-perfect weather, I’ll be able to hold it together and have an amazing time regardless.

Eric Barry

But if the worst were to happen – let’s say Irene’s sister showed up as an uninvited guest, and we were actually forced to cancel or postpone our reception – I know it would be a great relief to have purchased wedding insurance. We did this for my sister’s (outdoor) wedding, and we’ll likely do it for mine, too.

In the grand scheme of most wedding budgets, $75-$200 (the cost of the average WedSafe policy) is, truthfully, a drop in the bucket. And because the things that wedding insurance insures you against – postponement due to severe weather, accidents, or sudden illnesses as well as financial loss due to unforeseen glitches like a no-show vendor, lost photographs, or a damaged wedding gown – can be extremely expensive, I imagine wedding insurance would begin to look like even more of a bargain if something were to go wrong.

Lisa Rigby

WedSafe also offers wedding liability insurance, which is required by many venues, and protects you if you’re held liable for property damage or bodily injury, as well as alcohol-related incidents. Many caterers will have insurance that will cover you in most cases, but if you’re having an at-home reception or a reception at a nontraditional location, wedding liability insurance could be exactly what you need.

We feel comfortable recommending WedSafe to you because they’ve been in business, and specializing in weddings, since 1999. Their instant pricing is also hassle-free and super easy to obtain – no need to create a log-in, provide personal information, etc. We love that! If you think wedding insurance might be the right choice for you, I’d encourage you to read more on their site and look into getting a free quote!

We were under a tent in the “warm, stable, South” when a lovely afternoon thunderstorm hit. A couple of the steel uprights buckled, but the tent stayed up. Pretty scary! While on the topic, we’ve never been asked by a potential client if WE carry liability insurance, or what our image redundancy and backup procedures are. These are very important questions to ask any photographer or videographer.
