After what sounds like a delicious and romantic vineyard proposal, it was only appropriate for wine-lovers Amber + Jon to plan their nuptials at Raffaldini Vineyards in North Carolina. With the addition of deep jewel tones and family heirlooms as décor, their October wedding was perfect for the fall weather. We just love that guests were treated to a beautiful mountain sunset just before dinner and that A + J incorporated some finds that they picked up at our first Southern Weddings Yard Sale! Big thanks to Nancy Ray for sharing this lovely wedding with us!

Describe your wedding flowers: When I first met with our florist, I was very clear that my two main criteria were that I did not want any pink or any roses. Second, I wanted flowers that looked very natural and not over the top, nothing that was not local or out of season at the time of our wedding, and I think she did an incredible job. My bouquet was made up of antique hydrangeas, burgundy dahlias, eggplant mini callas, dusty miller, and peacock feathers then wrapped in burlap and lace, made complete with a cameo brooch that my great grandfather had made for my great grandmother. Our florist mixed in additional jewel tones for the bridal party’s bouquets and I loved the end result. Thank goodness for Pinterest, I think it was fairly new when we started planning but it was key in sharing ideas with all of our vendors!

During our 18 months of engagement and wedding planning, Jon was especially adamant that he wanted to keep with tradition and not have a “first look,” but as we got closer to our wedding date and started looking at a realistic day-of timeline, we realized it was worth considering. I found a few first looks on various wedding and photography blogs that I was impressed with and read what people had to say about it. I shared those with Jon and we ultimately decided to have a first look. It was one of the best decisions we made. I tend to be very shy and anxious in big crowds, especially being the center of attention, and it was the perfect way to calm some of my nerves by seeing Jon. It also gave us a lot more time for relaxed pictures with each other and our wedding party all together, which was a lot of fun before the ceremony. With a 6pm ceremony, we lost light fairly quickly after and we wouldn’t have been able to get half of those pictures or really enjoy that time if we had decided against a first look.

Did you write your own vows? We knew all along we wanted to incorporate personal vows into our wedding day. We shared our special self-written vows during our first look, and kept the ceremony fairly traditional. We had the idea to involve both of our immediate families in the ceremony. After my dad presented me, both of our sets of parents joined us at the altar as a symbol that both families were uniting to create a new family and to also give us their blessing. It was different and we loved the expression.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Jon’s sister read Colossians 3:12-17. She forgot to bring her Bible to the wedding, so she ended up reading it from her iPhone which was pretty funny.

My vision for our wedding was always vintage, rustic, and fall-themed. Our wonderful planner helped us create that by using lots of jewel tones, lace, peacock feathers, touches of burlap, and lots of vintage doilies. We also incorporated a lot of family heirlooms from both sides of our families and tried to involve family as much as possible. I loved that our wedding was set overlooking the Yadkin Valley of NC, which is by far one of our favorite places. We got to share something special to us with all of our friends and family who had traveled so far, and our guests were able to experience a beautiful NC sunset over the Blue Ridge just before dinner. Also, no Southern wedding is complete without acknowledging one’s alma mater! Jon is a Hokie so I surprised him with VA Tech colors for the ribbon wands used for our exit.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met through mutual friends while out playing trivia in March of 2009. I was invited and hardly knew anyone who would be there so I took my best friend with me. We barely spoke to anyone all night and probably brutally lost at trivia, but Jon and I kept making eye contact across the table. We spoke briefly at the end of the night and I left hoping I’d run into him again, but assuming I would not. Two days later, he had tracked down my contact information and emailed me to tell me he’d like the chance to get to know me better. The next week we met at Raleigh Times for drinks, and over five hours later, we realized we were just about the last people there and they were closing around us. That night he bravely admitted to me, “Either you’ll run or you’ll stay, but you’re it. This is it.” We just knew immediately.
Describe the proposal. Usually once a month or so, Jon and I jump in the car and either take a day or weekend trip in NC or VA. At the beginning of July 2010, we looked at our calendar and realized that every weekend of June was booked with weddings or out of town visitors. Jon knew I was stressed with work and our packed schedule so he offered to plan a getaway just for us at the end of the month. He told me not to worry about anything, he would take care of it all and it would be a surprise. He even helped me pack! For Jon to plan a surprise wasn’t really out of the ordinary, he loves doing things like that. I really didn’t think anything of it at first. Of course, as we got closer to the trip, I started becoming a little more hopeful. Early that Saturday morning, we got in the car and I drove the first part of our trip with directions from Jon. We took the back roads and reached the Virginia state line and jumped out to take a picture. That’s when Jon informed me we only had four more states to go. I was so confused. Still traveling on back roads, I started to get impatient and told him I wished we were going to Charlottesville, because that had been our first trip together and a special place for my family. Jon admitted that we were, and before I knew it we were pulling into the parking lot of Veritas Vineyards, one of our favorite wineries. After our wine tasting, we decided to head to King Family. We had a romantic picnic under a huge tree out on the grounds at King and once we finished, Jon presented two dessert boxes from the bakery he always brings me pastries from on special occasions. I told him there was no way I could eat dessert after our lunch. He convinced me and handed me one of the pastry boxes and kept one for himself, suggesting we just take a bite. When I opened it, there was a ring box inside. It had been in our refrigerator all night without me snooping or knowing. He got down on one knee and asked that we always strive to better ourselves and continue to grow together and I, of course, said yes!
In what month did you get married? October, our favorite time of year.
How many guests attended your wedding? 120
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Shopping for a wedding dress was something I was most excited about. Shortly after getting engaged, my mom and I started visiting boutiques. I knew I wanted something very different, with lace, and not strapless. My mom was the only person I took shopping with me and I feel like that was really special for us. Plus, my style is so different from my friends’ that I didn’t really want their opinion! I had pretty much decided on the Watters Escalante, but I kept holding out and kept getting more frustrated trying on dresses because nothing felt just right. We were visiting stores around Charlotte one day and I mentioned NY Bride to my mom, which wasn’t far away from where we were, so we decided to drop in. They just happened to be having a Blue by Enzoani trunk show that Saturday. My mom pulled the Concord from the rack, but I really wasn’t so sure about it on the hanger. When I came out in the dress, we both started crying, which was a first, so we knew that was the one. It was so different and so me, I couldn’t imagine having worn anything else. Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. All of our ceremony and first dance music was performed by Swift Creek, who also played throughout the cocktail and dinner hours. They were fantastic and were willing to learn anything we asked for. I walked down the aisle to our band’s instrumental rendition of “Storybook Love,” the theme from The Princess Bride since we both love that movie. Our recessional was “Swept Away” by The Avett Brothers and our first dance was “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. We only took one dance lesson and had so much fun dancing around the house practicing before the wedding. By the time our wedding day came, we just had a great time. My dad and I danced to “Daughter” by Loudon Wainwright III, it was both fun and emotional since I’m an only child. And the last song we played at the reception was “Salvation Song” also by The Avett Brothers. Our friends just gathered around us in a circle and sang; it was the perfect end to our wedding day.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Neither of us really cares for cake, and keeping with our rustic fall theme, we decided to serve an assortment of seasonal pies. We had full size apple, pumpkin, and banana/coconut crème (a combination of our Dads’ favorites) pies. There were also mini bourbon pecan pies, which were in honor of my late grandmother who used to bake mini pecan pies for me, so that was definitely a special touch.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: There were so many projects we (really Jon) worked on for the wedding. Jon’s from upstate NY and I’m from NC, so he made a sign post with different places our family and friends were traveling from with how many miles they had traveled to be there. The two things we still laugh about most are the cameos and the invitations. Each project took a lot longer than expected and we were both really happy how each turned out. It’s just hilarious how much time was spent on them and you just hope your guests notice the hard work. Another of my favorite details were the amber, purple, and green glassware and vintage doilies my mom and I collected from antique stores and flea markets for our centerpieces. We also used some glassware that I picked up at the first SW Yard Sale! What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We live in Raleigh and decided to get married three hours away at Raffaldini Vineyards. The majority of our vendors were based in Winston Salem, so we spent many weekend hours driving back and forth for meetings and tastings. However, we’ve always enjoyed visiting the vineyards in Western NC, so we were able to incorporate that here and there, which made for enjoyable weekends away during sometimes hectic wedding planning. Plus, we really liked all of our vendors so we didn’t mind spending time with them!
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Well, a couple of things were top priority for us – the food, the dress, and the photography. We were happiest we splurged on the food because rarely do you walk away from a wedding remembering how good the food was. We’re foodies and vegetarians and wanted our food to be delicious and representative of us but memorable for our guests. We were able to work with our awesome caterer to achieve exactly what we wanted and we still receive compliments from our guests about our food. We had a sit down dinner with choice of grilled salmon with lime butter or Portobello lasagna with gruyere. Both were served with parmesan asparagus and the salmon also came with a side of macaroni and cheese (my favorite). Our caterer brought in a large commercial wood fired grill so the guests could smell the food grilling while they enjoyed hors d’oeuvres during the cocktail hour.

My job title at Southern Weddings is Creative Director, which basically means I do a lot of… creative things. And I write a lot of emails. Come see what a typical day in my life is like!

9:12am I arrive at the Southern Weddings office. I am reliably 5-15 minutes late to work, but I almost always stay 15-30 minutes past closing time, so I figure it evens out in the end :)

9:15am Laptop is on, and SW email, SW blog, and Twitter tabs are open. I always check the blog first thing to make sure our first post went out on time, to approve and respond to any comments as necessary, and to double check the second post. Since, as a rule, I don’t check work email after work, I generally have between 20-30 emails in my inbox each morning, but I don’t mind!

9:20am I always start the morning by cruising through my inbox and tackling the easy ones first – forwarding real wedding interviews that came in to Nicole, downloading new real wedding images from photographers, etc. Then I go through emails from other SW ladies. Lastly, I’ll look at and respond to anything that seems urgent. Submissions, less urgent emails, and more complicated emails I usually leave until later in the day.

My pomegranate tote bag has been used almost every day since I bought it my junior year of college. Five years later, it’s still going strong! Also, I prefer to work barefoot, since I’m usually sitting in the pretzel position at my desk. On the right you can see my favorite notepad, which I keep next to my laptop to write notes throughout the day!

10:30am Staff meeting time! Lara, Nicole, and Alexia (our fall intern) gather around my desk, since I’m holding the speaker phone with Marissa and Kristin. As usual, we go around the circle with updates, cheering on M & K’s ad progress and swooning over any new editorial or graphic elements N & I are working on. Today we also started planning out some V5 launch items, such as our blog countdown posts, postcard send-outs, and — wait for it — launch party! (WHOO!)

11:05am My Mom texts me in the middle of the staff meeting to say my wedding gown has arrived in Connecticut! There is much excitement from the SW gals.

11:15am We say goodbye to Marissa and Kristin and I hop back on email. A very exciting message from Brooke at Curious & Co came in with drafts of our newest print illustrated feature, so Lara and I spend some time discussing possible edits, and then I draft a long email back. While most emails are fired off pretty quickly, a detailed email like that can take up to twenty minutes to craft! I also review and respond to submissions (I try to send a quick note to everyone), file away SBOM applications, answer submission questions, correspond with photographers sending in high-res images for print, and send lots of messages back and forth with the SW gals.

On the right, the beautiful bulletin board above my desk! Look closely, and you can even see a few sneak peeks from two of our SWV5 editorials!!

12:35pm Lunch time! I am notoriously bad about eating a late lunch (3:30, anyone?), so today is a good day! I usually check my personal email or pin things while I eat :)

1:00pm I construct most of our Blue Ribbon Vendor galleries, which is kind of tedious but I actually really love doing it. I know this sounds ridiculously cheesy, but I really do get excited about the quality of our vendors, and searching their portfolios to find the ten images that will really make them sing! Today I’m working on getting Odalys Mendez’s portfolio put together (she’s a new addition from Georgia) and making some refreshes to Haley Sheffield’s listing. (BRV members can swap out their images every six months.) Both look so beautiful!

2:00pm Time to work on a real wedding post! I’m responsible for placing the images and adding tags (to help with search engine results). I also usually get to choose the post titles :)

On the left, my narrowed down selects from one print real wedding, and on the right, the view to the right of my desk! I like to keep the three most recent issues handy for reference, and of course, my etiquette book has pride of place.

2:45pm Post is in and I move downstairs to the “Big Mac” (as we like to call it) to do some selects on our print real weddings. Nicole and Lara, who handle most of the layout, have delegated this task to me because I am ruthless, which is entirely necessary when narrowing down 600+ images to about 30 for a print feature.

4:00pm Lara wants a fresh eye on some V5 layout puzzles that are proving to be challenging, so we scroll through the InDesign doc and talk through different options. We discuss, once again, how awesomely overwhelming it would be to see all of these features for the first time at once, in print!

4:35pm Back up to my desk to close out emails for the day.

5:12pm Done and done! I’m definitely tempted to stay longer and work on some more V5 text since I didn’t get to it earlier in the day, but a few last DIY wedding projects are calling my name :)

Curious about the days of other SW ladies? Check out Marissa and Nicole’s previous posts!

I was in denial about the return of the colder months until I saw Marielle + Michael’s winter wedding. Marielle, who is a wedding professional (one of the talented members of the family behind Mark Williams Studio), embraced the romance behind the absence of color during winter and went to work creating a DIY wedding that tops the charts. Marielle’s “I do’s” to Michael were packed with family antiques and notions and then pulled together seamlessly by family and friends. We love that their winter wedding feels positively warm and cozy with the addition of handmade details and sentimental charm.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I actually went with a friend a few months before to look at dresses and she tried it on! Of course, I loved it on her — I never thought that it would be my dress! It was the second one that I tried on, and I knew immediately that it was the one.
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Being that my family, bridesmaids, and myself shot the pictures, we had no choice but to see each other before and get the “to-do’s” out of the way. Our first look was actually on the dock of the mill pond. It was the initial spot that I fell in love with at the venue, and if I had planned a small, intimate wedding, I would have married on the dock. It was a perfect compromise and a perfect moment.

Marielle is a woman of many talents! She put together this beautiful bouquet on her own and made a few nods to the women of her family. The blooms were tied with a hand-crocheted ivory lace handed down from her great grandmother and then adorned with an ivory cameo necklace, a gift from her mother.

As the DIY/wedding professional that I am, I decided to do all of the décor and floral myself. I fell in love with the look of winter and the absence of color during this time of year, so I decided to mimic this in my flowers. All of the flowers were made of seasonal plants that grow in my grandmother’s yard: dried baby’s breath, sola/tapioca wood flowers, cotton and cotton flowers, tallow berries, and preserved roses in my bouquet. I spent hours and hours hand crafting each design, but the end result and the feeling of creating my own wedding with my hands was so rewarding.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was the location. When Michael and I began dating (as children), he continuously told me that he knew exactly where he wanted to get married. I never understood quite how breathtakingly beautiful the place was until he made his case after we were engaged. Needless to say, I was blown away! The steeple that was positioned beside the ceremony was the steeple that I was baptized under at my church as a child. This of course, made my mother fall in love.

Set among the bare trees at McGarrh Mill Pond, M + M brought to life a ceremony that stuns. The dramatic aisle and light breeze could not have been more romantic!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. I walked down the aisle to “Turning Page” by Sleeping at Last. I am a die-hard Twilight lover and this song just spoke to my heart! Our first dance was to the first song that Michael and I listened to together as kids, “This Year’s Love” by David Grey. For our father-daughter dance, we danced to “Fields of Gold” by Sting. It’s Daddy’s all-time favorite. We have so many memories of it as kids. It was the most emotional part of the entire day!

Did you write your own vows? We actually recited vows written by our pastor in the ceremony, but we had a sacred vow exchange and prayer ceremony on the dock following the ceremony under the crepe myrtle lane. Michael and I exchanged written letters to each other, and threw the bottle in the water on our honeymoon. Pastors, who had been a special part of our life laid hands on us in a beautiful moment of blessing.

Everything was a timeless expression of Southern love. I wanted my wedding to be beautiful to everyone who attended, old and young. I have such an appreciation for my family’s collection of antiques and handmade notions from our ancestors past. All of the furniture used at the wedding came from within our ancestor’s plantation home, all of the lace was handmade by the women of my lineage. It was a “collaboration” of art and handmade beauty not only by me and my family, but our generations past. One detail that I loved was my garter. I made it from the lace of my grandmothers wedding dress sleeves. My sisters will also carry on this tradition.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Pulling it all off was definitely a challenge! My family and dear friends brought the beautiful scene to life with the details, shot all of the pictures, and were a part of one of the most emotional days of our lives. It was such a beautiful experience being able to work as “A Family of Artistic Professionals” and see my dreams come to life. I could have never been happier with the beauty of it all. We ARE our business and my wedding was a perfect showcase of our love for each other and what we do.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. After a crack of his adorable smile, Michael caught my eye in the fourth grade and swept me off my feet in the seventh grade during our two-week fling. We “rediscovered” each other in our high school art class. We began dating that summer and have never been apart since. I find it funny how so many people have a story of when they “knew” they were right for each other or when they fell in love. However, Michael and I have ALWAYS known! We have been each other’s best friend nearly half of our lives!
Describe the proposal. I was in the art studio working with ceramics, making a place setting of stoneware for the two of us to have one day in our future home. When I left the studio that afternoon, Michael asked me to come pick him up at Sweetheart Circle. It is a legend at Georgia Southern University that if you walk around Sweetheart Circle three times with your significant other, you will one day marry that person. The entire time as I drove there, I was thinking to myself, “I look like such a mess. My hands are shriveled and muddy! I just know he is going propose! He never asks me to pick him up here!” I was right, but of course at that point the mud didn’t matter, and even though my hands were shriveled to nothing the ring was still beautiful on my hand.
In what month did you get married? We were married on January 7, 2012.
How many guests attended your wedding? Over 500! This was with our guest list CUT! Having a line of small family businesses, we know a lot of people!)
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My childhood friend, Jordan Mason read scripture from Song of Solomon 8:6&7, “Hang my locket around your neck, wear my ring on your finger. Love is invincible facing danger and death. Passion laughs at the terrors of hell. The fire of love stops at nothing— it sweeps everything before it. Flood waters can’t drown love, torrents of rain can’t put it out. Love can’t be bought, love can’t be sold — it’s not to be found in the marketplace.” My first cousin, Christian Maile read from 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8, “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” He read from the wedding Bible that my late grandfather used when he officiated at wedding ceremonies.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: I actually had a table full of different deserts and cakes! The cakes were all heavenly in flavor. I decorated and assembled the tiered cakes myself.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Being so DIY, we managed to have an amazing event for approximately $19,000. Keep in mind, a LARGE portion of this expense was feeding over 500 guests!
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? I honestly can say that I don’t think I splurged on anything! Everything was 100% worth it and reasonable in my eyes.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My Daddy! Being that we work together 24/7 and attend weddings every weekend, it was such a surprise to watch him turn into a complete ball bag! Our time walking down the aisle and during our first dance was the most special part of the day.
