I love a good party, y’all, but I also love being surrounded by only people I truly love and cherish. For Emily + Michael, keeping their wedding small was a challenge that was worthwhile and turned into their favorite memory of the day. “We wanted to feel relaxed on our wedding day and enjoy everyone present. It was incredibly important to us not to compromise that. Having a small wedding allowed us to have many memorable moments. We did not feel rushed nor did we feel like we were entertaining. We really had time to enjoy and appreciate each person there.”

We just love that these photos from Jeff Hall make us feel just as relaxed as E + M wanted their celebration to be.

My wedding dress was more of a work in progress than anything. Both the dress and the shrug were made by friends. The dress design was a compilation of my favorite aspects of several dresses I had seen. It was really cool to see how my vision evolved. I love every piece of that dress. It has so much story, from the fabric to the broach to the shrug. Each element is precious to me and I know exactly where it came from.

I was so pleased with our wedding flowers. A dear friend of ours did all of the flowers. I gave her a picture of what I had hoped for and she made it happen well within budget! I wanted something that had an old-fashioned feel using the eucalyptus, wheat and whatever pink hues she thought would work. They turned out beautifully!

Did you write your own vows? We didn’t write our own vows. I think that is one of the few things we left to tradition. We used the Marriage Liturgy from the Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer and that had everything we needed to say. I remember those words from every wedding I had ever been to, so being able to say them myself was important.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Michael’s brother read Corinthians 13.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. My very best friend played the fiddle before and after our wedding and she wrote a song for us.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We really couldn’t choose. Everything in the wedding was hand-picked from thrift stores, borrowed, handmade or already in our collection of stuff. Each item was touched by someone we love and it all had a story. Our families and friends were so supportive and helpful in making every detail come together. We couldn’t have had a more meaningful wedding as far as all of the details go.

I love the photo below ridiculous amounts. I love that with a small wedding, a group portrait isn’t out of the question. This is one that I would hang in my home for generations.

I feel like there was so much that was Southern about our wedding. To begin, the Southern location, South Carolina Table Rock is just gorgeous, especially in the fall. The park itself has so much history and really is one of South Carolina’s great gems. The food was no exception. Barbecued pork, cornbread, cole slaw, mac ‘n’ cheese, drinking beer out of mason jars, sweet tea and lemonade! It was all Southern as far as the food goes! Another Southern element we had was that all the ladies were given lovely vintage handkerchiefs before the ceremony.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Michael and I met through our best friends years before we ever began dating. In those years, he was a nomadic rock climber (very much the bachelor) and I was a single mom. Needless to say, we were at very different places in our lives. Years later, we all reunited over a few beers and great memories. I gave him my number, he called, and five years later we married!
Describe the proposal. It was the coldest night here in South Carolina in December. He asked me to come into the backyard with him and look at the stars. It must be love because I obliged, though I detest the cold! Right there, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I said “of course” and then “can we go inside?” I was so cold and I couldn’t see the ring! It was simple and perfect for us.
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? 55
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Yes we did. We thought it would be a great way to settle into the day, just to see one another and hang out before the ceremony. It was really sweet, too, because my son and our moms were there and the pictures turned out so well! Michael and I are both very happy we made the decision to have a “first look.” It was a very special part of the day and it really made everything afterward so relaxed and natural.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: We went with pies. Many of our guests baked and we had about ten different pies.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Making decisions was my biggest challenge. Although I knew what I wanted, I was overwhelmed by the details and how to make things happen. The women in my life really helped with that. I looked at the people I knew who were excellent planners and I told them to tell me what to do and I did it. No questions asked.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The wedding itself. We feel that having a wedding and spending that amount of money on one day is such a luxury! Michael and I went back and forth as to whether or not we should have the wedding celebration. We are so happy we chose to celebrate in the way we did! I wouldn’t trade the entire experience for anything. It was the perfect way for us to begin our lives together with our precious family and friends.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Just try to keep perspective about what this day represents for you as a couple.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? There is no telling what’s next! Our son will be in high school this year so that will be an experience within itself. Michael and I have learned that life has its own plans for us at times and we hope to handle it all as gracefully as possible. We do enjoy a good adventure every now and then. Maybe we’ll add a baby!??

As the last editor to share my dream Southern wedding, I’ve had a lot of time to think about exactly what kind of wedding I want (in my dreams, of course). I’ve been perusing the Southern Weddings Pinterest nonstop trying to find the perfect Southern inspiration for my own big day, and do you know what I’ve discovered? I truly and honestly believe that I have had an inspiration overload! There are so many fabulously Southern ideas out there, and I just want to incorporate them all into my dream wedding. What’s a Southern Weddings editor to do?

Step back and take a good long look at all of the images I had collected, that’s what. Were there any recurring themes popping up? Why, yes! The majority of the photos came from sunny daytime weddings, there were an awful lot of deep blues and spring green color schemes weaving their way through my inspiration folder, and oh, I have a major love affair with rustic barn weddings. Without further ado, I am happy to share with you my very own dream Southern wedding:

Tell us the basics. Where do you want to get married and when? How many people would you invite? The more the merrier! If money were no issue (and this is a dream wedding, right?), I would invite upwards of 200 guests and make it a real party. I would love to get married right here in the Ol’ North State in the early fall.

What’s your design inspiration and color palette? One of the main focuses of my design inspiration is the lighting. Nothing adds to a space like a hanging chandelier or a canopy of swinging lights over a dance floor. I also incorporated a lot of classic white details–the white bouquets and white cakes–which look so clean and fresh against the rustic barn backdrop.

What details and traditions would you include in your ceremony? I want to pay homage to my family’s Southern heritage by including many traditions based around family. I am looking forward to my strong, supportive dad walking me down the aisle. I want my Mom, a former makeup artist, and my aunt, a hairdresser, to gussy me up for my walk down the aisle. I am excited to shower my bridesmaids with monogrammed gifts to show how appreciative I am to have them in my life. I can’t wait to surprise my hubby-to-be with a fun groom’s cake. Most of all, I want to incorporate as many details that have significance to my husband and myself. I want my wedding to be a celebration of the memories that we have shared.

What dress would you wear? I have fallen head over heels for Monique Lhuillier’s Scarlet. The lace detailing is classic, while the open back gives it a modern edge. I’m still on the look-out for a getaway dress. I’m thinking short and sleek. Any suggestions?

What would your flowers look like? I love all white bouquets, full of ranunculus and big white hydrangeas. At the reception, I imagine low white and green arrangements decking each table.

What details and traditions would you include in your reception? Again, string lights and warm chandeliers are a must! In addition, I want a large live band that will really get the guests grooving. My goal is to have every man, woman and child on the dance floor having the time of their lives!

What food would you serve? Oh Lordy, I’m already excited about the food at my future wedding! Southerners sure do like their food! I adore all mini foods, so there would be an assortment of barbecue sliders and homemade macaroni served in white ramekins. The dessert spread would ideally stretch out for miles. In addition to the classic white cake, I’d love to see lots of cupcakes, banana pudding (a Southern favorite), and delicious creme brulee!

Where would you honeymoon? My hubby and I would explore Europe. I’m particularly keen on going skiing in the Swiss Alps!

What’s most important to you about weddings? Love is tangible at a wedding. Family and friends come together to celebrate a couple’s love. Weddings are about creating memories and sharing traditions. I love the feeling of community that surrounds weddings and I hope that my own wedding is full of wonderful memories and my friends, my family and my new husband and I will always cherish.

Courtney + Chris are a couple that knows the way to my heart. Their barn reception was complete with string lights and s’mores by the fire pit. My favorite details didn’t work alone, though. The newlyweds’ reception boasted the best of Southern culture. Guests were met with cool and fruity drinks to quench their thirst, wheat sprays looked sophisticated in tall metal pails and burlap dressed the round tables outside. Good ole Southern eats and red velvet cupcakes from the dessert bar topped off the evening. We wouldn’t have had it any other way! What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Guests were offered sweet tea and strawberry lemonade upon entering the ceremony, which was on a farm. Vintage galvanized peach buckets holding abundant baby’s breath lined the aisle and programs were housed in peach crates. Antlers served as centerpieces at the reception. Our band played bluegrass music during the ceremony and country music during the dinner and first part of the reception. Our first dance was to Randy Travis. Our paper goods had elements of burlap, and the men wore purple gingham pocket squares. The flower girls had monogrammed sashes on their dresses, and the list goes on! As a New Yorker who has always loved the South and now lives here, it was important for me to juxtapose city and country elements. I wanted to honor the setting without abandoning my roots and style. So I blended Southern influences with some unexpected city elements.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: I am a huge dessert fan and, thus, wanted an assortment of desserts rather than a cake. The amazing Hallie Janes created a lovely dessert bar with everything from red velvet cupcakes and mini fruit tartlets to Georgia pecan bites and homemade cookies. We also had s’mores down by the lake-side fire pit.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Limiting the guest count. I come from a large family and we are lucky to have so many wonderful friends, but we really wanted the wedding to be around 130 people. It was hard to draw the line.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The moment after walking down the sun-lit aisle standing in between my father and my soon-to-be husband. Ok, that and the moment during the reception when I saw that things were getting rowdy!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows but we were able to create the wedding ceremony wording. Our favorite part is as follows, as it celebrates the shared past we had, and how much it molded us: “You are all especially welcome here because you form a circle of love. Courtney and Christopher are who they are, in part, because they have known all of you. The loved ones in this circle have shared concerns, have shared both agreement and disagreement, have shared tears and laughter. Through that sharing, Courtney and Chris have become more as persons, as have you. You are not spectators today. You are all a part of their past.”
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take everyone up on offers to help – and ask if you fall short on offers. And if you work, take a full week off before the wedding as countless things crop up. I really regret not doing that.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We both feel so blessed to have found one another again and are happily enjoying life in Atlanta. We are looking forward to growing our family that already includes Chris’ amazing 7-year-old son.

    On Rustic Lakeside Wedding from Something Pretty Part II– is there any way to find out where that barn is besides “private barn in Greensboro GA” because I live in GA & is the picture perfect venue I want– I saw the picture of the barn with the tables and string lights (afternoon picture a few down from the picture of the pink drinks) and fell in love with it. I really want my wedding there and if there was any way to find out that’d be amazing. That way I don’t have to go search all of Greensboro GA to find it :)
