When New Yorker, Courtney married her beau, Chris, on a farm in Georgia, she knew she wanted their wedding to be the perfect combination of city and country. The mission was achieved with some glam outfits paired with rustic details. Courtney’s Carolina Herrera dress looked stunning next to her gingham-clad husband, and the surprising (and ingenious!) inclusion of wheat sprays in the bouquets stood out against the ruffled and purple dresses that her bridesmaids donned. The lakeside wedding earns its Southern stripes with more than just location and clever juxtaposition, though. Courtney + Chris included details like the burlap-backed invitations, monogrammed flower girl sash, and sweet ceremony wording. We have to send hugs the way of Something Pretty Fine Art Photography for sharing this wedding with us!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Chris and I casually dated in college at the University of Dayton in Ohio and stayed in touch for a few years after. I remember him calling after 9/11 to check in since I lived not too far from the twin towers and again a year or so later on my birthday. At some point after that, we lost touch. Ten years after we last saw each other in person, we reconnected. I moved to Atlanta and a year later, we got engaged on New Year’s Eve. After a nearly ten-month engagement, we were married at a private barn near Reynolds Plantation, where Chris’ parents live and we frequently visit.
Describe the proposal. I have always loved New Year’s Eve and have celebrated it in a big way for as long as I could remember. That year though, Chris and I decided that we wanted to stay home – and we ended up getting engaged. Chris made the proposal all about “firsts,” symbolizing the start of our new life. He proposed in the first house we lived in together, at 1am on the 1st day of the New Year (1/1/11). We got married on the 1st day of the month too but we actually didn’t plan that on purpose.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Happy, intimate and peaceful (and stressful)!
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? 140
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I loved having an outdoor reception with bistro lighting strewn across the dining and dancing area.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I have been in the fashion industry for years, so dress scouting was a very fun part of the planning process! When I got engaged, I checked out every spot in Atlanta and almost settled on a few dresses, but wanted to go back to NYC to shop so I could see the full collections. I checked out a few places like Vera Wang and Saks and, again, almost decided on a dress. Then, the afternoon before I was flying back to Atlanta (about to purchase said dress) I relooked at a few “tearsheets” of dresses that I had pulled out from magazines and I was reminded of a dress from Carolina Herrera that I had to try. In that instant I just knew it was the one, even before seeing it in person. I called the Carolina Herrera shop on Madison and they were completely booked. I was leaving the next day – and was so mad at myself for not booking an appointment with them sooner. About 15 minutes later, Michelle Kim from the shop called back and said they could, in fact, see me the next day. I went in, tried on the dress and that was it. Michelle turned out to be the loveliest, sweetest and most professional bridal consultant ever. I absolutely love my dress and feel completely cheated that I was only able to wear it for such a short time!
Describe your wedding flowers: My goal was to create a high-low, county-city, high fashion-rustic vibe across all aspects of my wedding. So, to strike that balance against my dress and the dresses of the bridesmaids, I went rustic with the flowers. I had something specific in mind and our florist did an amazing job creating it. We did all white, lush flowers along with wheat sprays. It was tied with a burlap wrap that had red ticking.

Beautiful wedding! I love the groom’s attire. I am taking a stab and guessing his shirt is a gingham shirt from Vineyard Vines. I would love to know where he got his look from for my own wedding.

Really, who wouldn’t want to be a guest at Lisa + Blake’s farm wedding? With antique farm equipment, hay bales, and cows dotting the reception, this is Southern at its finest. Family and friends played corn hole on boards hand painted by Blake’s mom and were then treated to a Southern feast of barbecue, potato salad, and coleslaw. A claw foot tub full of Coca-Colas stood by to wash down the meal. I’m so impressed with Lisa + Blake’s just-decorated-enough strawberry shortcake — it’s the perfect dessert for their country wedding and I’m dying for a piece. Big thanks again to Jamie Clayton for sharing!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The homemade corn hole boards made by Blake’s mother.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We decorated the tables with burlap, lanterns, and African violets. Our meal was barbecue, potato salad, coleslaw, and, of course, sweet tea. We draped rope along the walls of the barn and hung pictures of Blake and I by clothes pins. The wedding was on a farm in the middle of the country in Lebanon, TN with donkeys in the back of the farm, and a huge cow field to the right. The ceremony was on the porch of a log cabin, with the guests sitting on old church pews. The reception was in a barn, with wagon wheel chandeliers, lots of old farm equipment, hay bales, and an old claw foot tub that was used as a beverage holder complete with glass bottles of Coca-Cola.
Describe your wedding cake: It was a three-tiered strawberry shortcake with cream cheese icing.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Finding a location was difficult because we wanted it to reflect us and our personalities, but when we finally went to the farm we knew it was perfect. Other than that, Blake and I and our family and friends spent the entire week before the wedding decorating and preparing. It was very much a DIY wedding and we were pretty exhausted by the wedding day.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our fabulous photographer!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The reveal was really great, when Blake and I saw each other for the first time. We were both so emotional and happy. My mom and bridesmaids were peeking through a window, watching during the reveal. We could hear them crying and cheering from inside.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We just bought a house in Knoxville and have been enjoying fixing it up and decorating it. Blake is in nursing school currently, and we look forward to doing travel nursing and traveling around, and hopefully out of, the country after he graduates.

Lisa + Blake’s Cedar Springs Farm wedding looks so vibrant and dramatic through Jamie Clayton’s lens. Lisa’s dark purple calla lilies stand out against her ruched Pronovias gown and play well off the yellow in her bridesmaids’ David’s Bridal frocks. I love the sweet details the couple included, like the curtain and fabric draping on the porch of the farm house and the mason jars filled with happy daisies. Lisa + Blake wanted a venue that matched their personalities and then spent the week leading up to the wedding decorating and crafting. Their genuine efforts look like a sweet Southern affair!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. My best friend, Cassie started working at Barley’s in Knoxville, a restaurant and bar. Blake was working there as well, and when I would go visit Cassie at Barleys, I kept running into Blake. We spent some time together in passing, played pool, and eventually went on our first date to a Smokies baseball game in April 2008.
Describe the proposal. Blake took me out of town one weekend to see one of our favorite comedians in Greensboro, South Carolina. On our way back, he wanted to go to the Biltmore, so we did. We went on a walk down by the duck pond there and stopped and sat under a tree by the pond. He got down on one knee and proposed – he was so nervous, and I was completely surprised! I had no idea it was coming, but all of my family and friends did. After crying, laughing, and being mostly in shock, we came back to Knoxville that night. Cassie had cooked us dinner, and my family and best friend, Chelsea had come in from out of town to surprise us. We all had dinner together. It was a great day.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Emotional, relaxing, fun!
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: The wedding dress was actually one of the first ones I tried on. My mom and I went to the White Room in Lebanon, TN, and I tried on a few dresses. The winner was a mermaid cut, oyster colored Pronovias wedding gown with lots of ruching around the middle. I think we both knew immediately that it was the one. I tried on several dresses after that, but my mind just kept coming back to that one dress. It was perfect!
Describe your wedding flowers: The bridal bouquet was simple, with dark purple calla lilies. The bridesmaids’ bouquets had both white and purple calla lilies. We also had lots of daisies, African violets, and other colorful flowers around the ceremony and reception area.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we used traditional vows, but we both really liked the idea of having the guests participate in the vows by saying “we do” promise to support us in our marriage.
