Yummy Southern food (like friend green tomatoes!), a gorgeous oak trees backing both the ceremony and reception, and fun colorful details! Stacey + Patrick’s big day was a sweet reflection of their love of the outdoors (be sure to read their engagement story, even snow and a hurricane couldn’t stop Patrick from getting his girl!), heritage, and Stacey’s affinity to bright colors. She said she “wanted to have a whimsical feel to the wedding”, and I’d say that the mix-n-match centerpieces and colorful chevron runners completely fit the bill!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I’m not one of those women who has known from childhood exactly what my dress, or even my wedding would be like. I consider myself a bit of a tomboy and until the last few years, I didn’t even like wearing dresses unless I was forced to do so! Needless to say, dress shopping was very intimidating for me at the outset. I visited maybe two shops before stopping in to the place where my sister had bought her dress eight years before. There was a dress on display in the window when I walked in, and I said “That looks like a fun dress!” I tried on a few, didn’t love any of them and finally said, “I want to try that one in the window.” I put it on and instantly loved it! I found myself playing with the ruffles while in the dress shop–it was so fun to wear! I wanted to be comfortable in my dress and wanted to have a good time at the wedding. This dress fit the profile perfectly for me.

By the look of this glamorous bride we see here, I don’t believe you were ever a tomboy, Stacey! : )

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did go with a first look. From the beginning of our wedding planning, we tried our best to make the wedding what we truly wanted, and not just what was expected, typical, or considered “traditional.” We realized that this would be a great opportunity to spend a few moments alone together and really focus on each other. We knew how crazy and busy the day could get (it went by so fast!) and we truly cherished those few moments we had alone together.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did write our own vows, and we shared them with each other during our first look. There can be a tendency to forget about private, special moments for the bride and groom on the wedding day. Having a first look allowed us to spend a few moments together, but also allowed us to share our vows without having the pressure of “being on stage” in front of all our family and friends. I don’t do well with speaking in front of a lot of people!

I love bright colors and wanted to have a whimsical feel to the wedding. My bouquet had coral peonies, bright pink peonies, dusty miller, burgundy scabiosa, blush astilbe, red ball dahlias, red gloriosa lilies, bupleurum, white phalenopsis orchids with fuchsia centers and red anemones, hand-tied with a ribbon. Branch Designs did a fabulous job taking my thoughts and ideas and making beautiful floral arrangements. I would’ve been lost without them!!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We didn’t have any readings, but we did have a great family friend, who was our pre-marital counselor, say a personal prayer for us during the ceremony, which was truly special. We had “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redman playing in the background while he was praying.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We used instrumental versions of our favorites played by the Vitamin String Quartet (VSQ) for a few of the songs during our ceremony, and also at our cocktail hour. We played “1,2,3,4” by the Plain White T’s (VSQ version) for the wedding party procession, “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s (VSQ version) for the Bridal Procession, “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redman during the prayer given by our good friend and pre-marital counselor, “M79” by Vampire Weekend for wedding recessional, “Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole for mother/son dance, “Sunrise Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof for father/daughter dance, and “All My Days” by Alexi Murdoch for our first dance

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Considering that Patrick and I live in Maryland and are from that area, I’d say the entire wedding was Southern in that it was in Charleston, SC! We probably best represented the South in the food we served. We had passed hors d’oeuvres of fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits, a mac’n’cheese station, and pan-seared local wreck fish (a South Carolina specialty) with succotash.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The venue was probably our favorite. Jacqueline at Sweetgrass Social Event and Design did a fabulous job finding the perfect venue, Legare Waring House, for us. I have a huge love of trees and wanted both the ceremony and reception to be outside. This venue couldn’t have been more perfect for us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in college playing soccer. I played for a friend of mine as a favor, since his team never had enough girl players. Patrick was playing on the team that day. He asked me for my number after the game so that I could be on the next team he put together. He never did put a team together, but different circumstances brought us together over the next year and a half and we became best friends. We started dating and dated for five years before getting married!
Tell us all about the proposal! The weekend before the proposal, we were supposed to go camping in Shenandoah Valley, but Hurricane Sally hit the East Coast and covered our campground in multiple feet of snow! We both love adventures and trying new things, se weren’t going to let some snow ruin our camping trip! We had never snow camped before, and although we enjoyed the experience, it was freezing cold. We slept as well as we could in our tent that night, and the next morning, we planned on going for a hike. Since there was quite a bit of cloud cover, it was even colder than the night before. I suggested we just pack up and go home, but he insisted we go on a hike…my suspicions were piqued! We began our hike, walking along in the snow, stopping here and there to look at waterfalls and streams. We stopped on a bridge to pray and get something to eat. Patrick knelt down and began rummaging around in his backpack. I could hear plastic wrappers and I excitedly said, “Oh! Snacks!” He replied, “I think you’ll like what I have for you more than snacks.” He opened the ring box and proposed, and I instantly said yes!! I was so happy to be marrying my best friend and the love of my life!

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 90
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Instead of serving wedding cake to our guests, we wanted to have other small desserts to offer. Cru Catering provided our food and desserts and it was all so delicious! We decided to go with strawberry shortcake with fresh whipped cream and bourbon spiced pecan pie. For people who stayed late to dance and mingle, we supplied a s’mores station. Patrick really wanted to have a cake to cut, so we also had a small chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting supplied by Wildflour. We liked the cake so much during our tasting session that we ordered a number of cupcakes in various flavors for our honeymoon. They didn’t last long!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was making choices! Although I dearly love Pinterest, it made it very difficult for me to settle on making decisions. I kept thinking that if I kept looking, I’d find something even better than what I had settled on previously. There are just so many cute things and ideas out there that it can easily become overwhelming! I had friends and family around to remind me that the wedding would come together one way or another, and that God had brought us together and I was going to be marrying my best friend!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Honestly, everything came together so well and we loved every vendor that played a part. Dana at Dana Cubbage Wedding Photography did a fabulous job of capturing our day. We feel like we not only have great memories of our day, but we have wonderful pictures to prove it. She and her team truly heard what was most important to us, and made those things possible without a hitch.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There were a few minutes after the ceremony and before our arrival at cocktail hour where Patrick and I were sitting in the house that overlooked the wedding. We were able to look down and see our family and friends and the beautiful set up of our wedding and kind of get a bird’s eye view of our day. It was an unplanned moment alone, but it was so fun seeing all of our hard work and planning come together and everyone enjoying themselves.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Before you start planning, sit down with your fiancé and discuss what top three things are important to each of you. I feel that if you have that figured out, you can spend your time and money on those things, and the rest will fall into place a lot easier. Also, I don’t know how I would’ve planned this wedding without Jacqueline at Sweetgrass Social Event and Design. She was invaluable throughout the process and she and her team allowed my husband and I to truly enjoy our wedding day without a single worry. I would highly recommend having a wedding planner!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We’re looking forward to getting to know each other as husband and wife, which has a whole new set of responsibilities and roles for each of us. We love spending every minute together and thank God every day for the gift he’s given us in each other. We can’t wait to see what God has in store for us. :)

It’s not often that we get to hear a couple’s love story from the groom, but when we do, it’s such a treat! Brandy and Quint are so adorable together, and their colorful wedding was wonderfully reflective of their fun-loving, joyful personalities. These North Carolina natives drew tons of inspiration from their Southern home state, from the foods they served to the way they incorporated family into the ceremony. After all, as Brandy says, “So much of being Southern is celebrating family.” We couldn’t agree more!

From Quint: We owe our meeting to a mutual friend, Damian Hall. Damian has known Brandy for a few years through one of Brandy’s bridesmaids, Elizabeth, and he was in my part-time MBA classes at North Carolina State University. After getting to know me, he decided to play matchmaker and asked each of us if we cared to be set up. We both were game, so he gave me Brandy’s phone number. After an exciting initial phone conversation, I asked Brandy to a concert, Joshua Radin, at Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. We met for the first time outside of Sono, a sushi place on Fayetteville Street in Raleigh. We shared many laughs, smiles, and even a practical joke on Damian that night. It was a great meeting/first date, and we have been stuck on each other ever since.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I was very nervous about finding “the” dress. Lana Addison, a boutique in downtown Cary was recommended to us by a friend. It was the perfect place to find a dress. Small and intimate, with a great collection of beautiful gowns. Joining me was my mom, sister, and two best friends. The dress I selected was the third one I tried on! Even though I tried on many more, we all kept going back to the Martina Liana gown. It was a fitted lace gown with a sweetheart neckline. I also had two sashes I wore for the day. I wore a taupe sash for the ceremony, tied in a bow in the back. For the reception, I changed into a crystal embellished sash. The gown had vintage-inspired, re-embroidered, textural cotton lace detail, a scalloped hem and a traditional chapel train.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided not to do a ‘first look. We really wanted to save that moment for the ceremony. Sharing this sweet moment with our friends and family was perfect for us.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? While we didn’t write our own vows, we poured over samples of vows and pieced together the ones that we felt were most important and meaningful to us.

We were married in the gardens of the Weymouth Center and I wanted to add to the beautiful, natural flowers in the environment. I used pink and coral roses, gerbera daisies, and green and white hydrangea. Our designer also incorporated many other small orange blooms in miniature vases. It was very eclectic and perfect for our outdoor garden affair. As opposed to matching table florals, we used old vases (brown and blue glass) and lots of white milk glass in various shapes and sizes. I switched things up a bit and had the bridesmaids carry white bouquets with hydrangeas and other blooms while I carried a bouquet with coral and pink accents. My bouquet handle carried a small charm of a pug, as a tribute to our sweet pug, Pearl! The bridesmaids all wore different dresses and the maid and matron of honor wore a slightly different color, so the white bouquets added the symmetry we needed.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our food, for starters. We had a buffet menu of Eastern pulled pork BBQ (our favorite food), fried chicken, baked mac and cheese, roasted vegetables, baby green salad with strawberries and goat cheese, mini biscuits and cornbread with honey butter. We also had lemonade served out of mason jars. The groomsmen wore khaki slacks and vests with plaid bow ties. Even our sweet ring bearer, Lawson Akom, wore a khaki suit with a chevron bow tie. Adorable! During the reception, we played a bit of beach music to get the crowd warmed up. One element that makes me feel Southern was having the entire event outdoors. Both of us grew up in NC and love being outside. It was important to us to incorporate the natural beauty of our venue. As the sun set, twinkle lights and candles were used everywhere.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Pies, pies, and more pies!! Quint and I love pie and we felt it was a nice touch to add to our Southern wedding. We had pecan, peanut butter, key lime, chocolate, lemon and strawberry. Some were full sized and a few were mini. We did have a small cake as well, since we couldn’t miss the opportunity to “cut the cake.” We had two layers–one peanut butter and the other strawberry, all covered in buttercream icing.

Tell us all about the proposal! From Quint: On my drive back from Pinehurst, NC after asking Ms. Barrett’s permission to marry Brandy (meeting Brandy to go see “The Five Year Engagement,” ironically), I began brainstorming about how I wanted to carry out this important moment. It only took me about 25 minutes to hatch my plan. I knew that Pinehurst was on the short list of Brandy’s favorite places in the world, so that location was settled. Since it is known for its golfing, I wanted to incorporate that as well. I had our friends, Justin and Elizabeth, reach out to Brandy about visiting us from Philadelphia, and had them express interest in riding with us to Pinehurst to play a round of golf. Brandy bought it. My plan was to propose on the 5th hole of one of the eight Pinehurst courses. Why the 5th hole? Why not the 18th green? Glad you asked. Being that I am the 5th (V), the number five has always had a special meaning to me, and I did not want to leave any detail untouched. With the help of Justin and Elizabeth, we got a tee-time of 11:20 AM on Pinehurst Course No. 3, and a customized golf ball with “Brandy, will you marry me” on it. Justin also helped me arrange for my dad to hide out around the 5th hole so that he could take pictures and capture the moment as it happened. Now, I’m not a great golfer, so I had alternating fears about my plan: a) I would play absolutely terribly and be about 20 over par through those five holes; or b) I would play tremendously and not want to end our round short on the 5th green! The nerves didn’t hit until the tee box for the 5th hole, but I somehow managed to make it to the green in regulation. Once Brandy reached the green, I replaced her actual ball with the customized ball and waited for her to approach. I got an assist from Elizabeth, who encouraged Brandy to remove her golf glove from her left hand because “all of the professionals putt without their gloves.” After some initial confusion about her ball, she bent down, read the question, and turned to find me kneeling with the ring. What I actually said is hazy in my memory, but I’m pretty sure she got the point that I was asking her to marry me! She said “YES” of course, and then I calmly sank my par putt. From there, it was a whirlwind of pictures on the course, followed by some celebratory champagne in the clubhouse. Brandy kept saying that she needed to call her mom and her best friend, Whitney, but I had a plan arranged for that, so I managed to stall her. I had gathered a group of our closest friends a couple of minutes away at Ms. Barrett’s house for a surprise celebration. It was a perfect celebration for a perfect day.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Whitney Akom, the matron of honor read a piece by Wilferd Arlan Peterson titled “The Art of Marriage.”
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. For our first dance, we chose “You Are the Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. We had discussed several different options for our first dance, but it was decided after Quint randomly watched “I Love You, Man” on Comedy Central one night and heard that tune on the soundtrack. We listened to it and realized it was perfect for our first dance! A couple of years ago at a friend’s wedding, “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison played. Quint and his mother simultaneously shared their love for that song, so it was only natural for them to use it for their mother-son dance.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: It’s hard to pin down a favorite detail, however, we were thankful and blessed to have my Aunt Bebe marry us. She is my father’s sister. Although my Dad is not with us, having Bebe be such a special part of our wedding was perfect and something we will always cherish. So much of being Southern is celebrating family. :)
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I wore a new double-stranded Chanel pearl bracelet given to me by my mom as my something new. My something old was a handkerchief that was Quint’s grandmother’s. My something blue was my garter and my something borrowed was a ring that belonged to one of my bridesmaids.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Ray! Ray was our wedding planner/designer/caterer/ extraordinaire!! He always made us feel reassured and was able to make our vision come to life. I also feel it is important to note that my sister and mom were such a huge inspiration for many of the special touches at our wedding. They both are have a talent for design and crafting.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There were so many memorable moments. We both wanted our reception to be a great time to “get down” with our friends and families. As we introduced our bridal party into the tent, we had selected a different song for them to dance to. Needless to say, this was hilarious. The night continued into a huge dance party, tons of celebrating, and lots of laughter.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Our advice would be to not stress yourself out if something (details, etc.) don’t work out. No one will know but you. Enjoy the day!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Enjoying each other every day. Down the road, we look forward to starting a family!

Ali + Robert are about as cute as a pup in a little red wagon. Their September “I do’s” were full of details that sound beautiful, but came easily to the couple who just wanted to be themselves on their wedding day. Cowboy boots? You bet Ali and her dad wore them down the aisle, just because they wanted to be comfortable. Of course, it ain’t a proper celebration without good eats! Ali + Robert served delicious Southern fare and treated their guests to a bourbon tasting bar complete with personalized old fashioned glasses. We love seeing bourbon bars pop up at weddings, but we love that it’s extra special to the newlyweds since they bonded over bourbon when they first met!

My bouquet was a French mound style bouquet in varying shades of pinks using flowers such as watermelon ranunculus, garden roses, and dahlias. Lissa used geranium leaves as greenery in between the garden roses and geraniums — it smelled divine wrapped! The bouquet was wrapped in charcoal gray velvet to coordinate with the groom and then was embellished with a broach.

Reading about one of Ali’s most memorable moments (aside from her brother dancing with all of the bridesmaids at the reception) definitely adds another element to the next few photos!

We all still get a laugh out of the momentwhen my bridesmaid, Katie got attacked by one of the horses during pictures.  We were all lined up against the fence, when one of the horses came up from behind and gave her a huge lick up the middle of her back. It scared her to death! The horse then began to start munching on her hair! The candid photos of this are priceless!

Describe the proposal. (From the groom) I was on a work trip to Detroit, and I had planned to propose to Ali as soon as I came home and walked in the door.  On the way home, I bought two bouquets of flowers and I attached the ring to one bouquet. I brought the flowers in and presented them to her with a big smile on my face (happy to see her and hoping she would see the ring), however Ali just put them down on the counter and started asking me about my trip and saying I needed to play with Boog (her Pekingese). For about 15 minutes we talked about my trip while the flowers (and the ring!) sat on the counter.  It was excruciating trying to hold back my excitement. Finally, I got her to start arranging the flowers in the vase and, of course, she starts with the bouquet that doesn’t have the ring on it. During this time I am standing behind her waiting for her to see the ring so I can kneel down and I ask her to marry me.  I see the ring dangling there and I am sure she has seen it, so I kneel down waiting for her to turn around.  She then asks me a question and I answer her from below, at which point she turns around to see me kneeling. Not understanding what is going on, I point to the ring dangling there and asked her to marry me. Of course, she said YES!!!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Robert and I had saved cards that we had given each other over the years for holidays and “just because” occasions. We decided to have my cousin, Katie, do a reading from one of our favorite cards, which was a promise to be each other’s best friend and to love each other unconditionally. We thought it would add a little bit of “us” by doing so.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: As part of our ceremony, we chose to include a “Love Letter and Wine Box” ceremony.  Robert and I included a bottle of our favorite wine (that will age well) and of course, two cards in place of the love letters. We love the idea of adding a new card to the box every year on our anniversary, then having these cards to look back on and to commemorate our love for one another.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. For our processional, we played Darius Rucker’s “History In The Making.” For the recessional, we played The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.” Our first dance was to Railroad Earth’s “Right In Tune.”

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration?  What was Southern about your wedding? My father and I decided to wear cowboy boots for the big day! We wanted to be comfortable, and it seemed fitting. As part of their gift, I gave each bridesmaid a natural linen clutch with a lace flower that was each lined with different color seersucker and was personalized with their name. We wanted cocktail hour to be fun and a good way for people to meet and mingle. We decided to make it interactive, so we had a bourbon tasting bar as well as two signature cocktails using Firefly Sweet Tea and Firefly lemonade vodka from the distillery outside of Charleston, SC. For wedding favors, we etched double old fashioned glasses with the initial of each guest’s first name to use with the bourbon bar.  We thought it would be a nice token for each person to take home with them. We had a biscuit bar, complete with local butters, jams, and pimento cheese.  We also decided to have games such as corn hole and horseshoes — two great Southern traditions! As far as décor for the reception goes, we included black-eyed peas in the base of the centerpieces and used burlap overlays for an added “Southern” touch.  Also, each table was named after a different Southern city, which was displayed by using vintage postcards. This was actually Robert’s great idea! Our food was mainly comfort food such as mini meatloaves in mason jars, pecan-crusted chicken fingers, collards, BBQ, fried green tomatoes, grits, and mini tomato pies. We also had a plated heirloom tomato stack salad with buttermilk and bacon dressing. For our exit, we repurposed cotton bolls from the ceremony décor for guests to toss.

What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? It’s definitely a tie between our food and having a live band.  Food and music are two things that can make or break the feel of a wedding! We wanted to make sure that none of our guests went home hungry and that everyone got out on the dance floor!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: We decided to have a pie bar instead of a traditional wedding cake. We both LOVE pies, so we thought it would be a nice touch that would fit with the theme of our wedding!  We did however, have a NC State groom’s cake, which was red velvet with cream cheese frosting (Robert’s favorite!).

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  Robert and I met through my best friend, Rhi and her now husband, Dave.  Robert and Dave were good friends from Graduate School at Clemson. I had tagged along with Rhi on a weekend trip to Greenville to visit Dave.  The first night in town, Dave had a group of people over to his house. I kept noticing the quiet guy with the kind eyes. Robert and I bonded over beer pong and bourbon (classy, I know!) and have been together ever since!  Now, three years later, what’s better than two best friends marrying best friends?!

How many guests attended your wedding? 130
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I had actually been “eyeing” my dress for over a year, after seeing it online.   We made the special trip to J. Major’s since they were the closest boutique that carried it.  I was so nervous about trying it on since I had been in love with it for so long, but wasn’t sure how it would actually look on me! It was the first dress I tried on, and knew it was “the one.”  I tried on several other styles, but nothing compared!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? We decided to not do a first look! Robert was actually more adamant about this than I was and wanted to stick to “tradition.” He didn’t ask for much during the wedding planning process, so I definitely wanted to honor this request since he didn’t have many!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Since we were doing personalized double old fashioned glasses for our guests as well as table assignments, we needed an exact head count and names of the people attending the wedding.  Trying to organize those two details was hectic, to say the least!
What range did your wedding budget fall into?  $25,000-$50,000
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Make sure to focus on the details that are most important to you and your fiancé. It’s your wedding, so you need to do what makes you both happy! Also, just take a minute to step back and breathe when it all seems to get a little stressful!
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?  Robert and I are taking our honeymoon to Italy in March, which we’re really looking forward to! We’re also now proud parents of a petite goldendoodle, Pearl, who is such a joy.  Though Boog is still trying to adjust to being a big brother!
