Alright, y’all. I know we feature a lot of Southern goodness around these parts, but this wedding? This wedding might actually come out on top as THE MOST Southern wedding we’ve ever featured. I know that’s a pretty big claim, so let’s run down the checklist, shall we? Large guest list? 375+ Large bridal party? 32, if you include both sides. Adorable children? Yes, and they rang bells down the aisle! Cowboy boots, wildflower bouquets, a wedding gown with lace, bow ties, bluegrass music at the ceremony, a farm venue? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes, and trust me, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Check back soon for more of Perkins + Wickliffe’s Southern stunner, shot beautifully by Jodi Miller Photography!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Pretty hilarious. The two of us met in a bowling league a few years out of college, through mutual friends.
Describe the proposal. AMAZING. We were on my family’s annual beach vacation. Every night my three-year-old nephew had a “treasure hunt” on the beach. One night, Wickliffe slipped the ring box in his treasure as my nephew pulled it out! Wickliffe snatched it from his hand, got down on one knee and proposed in front of my entire family. Of course, they all knew but me and they captured EVERY moment on film!
Adjective that describes the day: Breathtaking
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? 375-400
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The venue and being outside.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Everything! We were married on my parents’ farm. We had the ceremony in a field and the reception around the house. We had the largest wedding party ever, and our dog was the main focus! The bridesmaids did a charm pull from the cake (my mom joined too, as a surprise to her because she is amazing), we served Southern themed food with a raw bar featuring oysters, crawfish, trout, wahoo (which we caught), tuna and shrimp. We wore cowboy boots, the men wore Virginia coalition belt buckles, and we handed out props to our guests after dark including cowboy hats, bandanas, tambourines and maracas. We buried bourbon for good weather, had a bluegrass band, hay bale décor, a hand carved guest book, and bell children. Our toasting goblets were also hand blown by a dear friend and gifted to us by my brother and sister-in-law.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I am currently a Southern girl living in the Big Apple. I went with two friends to several boutiques hoping to avoid the Kleinfeld extravaganza. Little did I know that it was actually true. I found that they have the best selection and service and I ended up saying “Yes” to the dress there – but not on TV.

Weird request, but if any of your bridesmaids might be interested in selling their dress, let me know. I have 9 BMs and asking them to find different shades of teal dresses in taffeta fabric. AWESOME ideas BTW!!!!

Lisa: I don’t think it is a weird request at ALL! I am happy to send out an email to my maids to see if anyone is interested in selling their dress. Do you want to give me your email and I can have them reach out to you directly?

Perkins Lyne: SUCH a beautiful wedding!
I’m an Ontario Canada girl currently teaching in Alberta, but planning my Ontario wedding for this August from all the way out here :S Planning is going smooth, except for figuring out the bridesmaid dresses. I LOVE the teal colour you chose. Where did you purchase them? Also, if you or Lisa have girls that want to sell their dresses for this summer, I would be very interested. Thanks!

Perkins Lyne: I’m just wondering if you made your own arch and if so would you mind sharing the ” how to” info? My cousin spotted your arch and has asked if we could make it for her August wedding. Thank you so much!

Ashley + Ross’s light brunch reception was an ideal wedding celebration for this couple who wanted to keep things simple. White flowers in milk glass from the bride’s mother’s collection decorated the space at Collina Farm at Clifton Inn while burlap table runners broke up the white-on-white effect and kraft paper signs directed guests to yummy Southern breakfast fare. (I spot some ham and cheese biscuits!) Self-proclaimed cupcake-obsessed, Ashley wanted to serve up a batch of classic chocolate and vanilla cupcakes for their family and friends to nibble on. Though they love cupcakes, the couple also chose to have a small cutting cake made. We love how it incorporates tradition without stepping on Ashley’s devotion to the smaller sugary treats! Thanks again to Elisa B Photography who captured this lovely affair!

Describe your wedding cake: I am obsessed with cupcakes. We had a local cupcake company whip up a batch of classic chocolate and vanilla goodness and a cutting cake to boot!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: To be honest, our favorite was the lack of details that we had to think about. It was our goal to keep things simple. We did not have specific wedding colors and rather opted for a neutral palette of sand, grey, and lots of white! A good friend helped me turn some scrap burlap into two ring pillows and table squares. Our guestbook was a custom Etsy find and I made most of the other details by hand, like “gluten-free” flags to mark the special cupcakes and cinnamon rolls, signage galore, and wedding wands. We put out some décor and hung a photo line under the tent the night before the wedding, but aside from those small things, we truly enjoyed not being concerned with details whatsoever. We just focused on getting married, on each other and our beautiful families and friends.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Keeping our array of out-of-town guests informed and comfortable. With the majority of our family traveling to Virginia from North Carolina and Texas, it took some extra TLC to make sure each person was clear on the plan for the rehearsal and wedding. We did our best to communicate with everyone ahead of the wedding and then flood them with smiles and thanks when we were finally face-to-face for the big day!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our venue! We wanted to have a simple wedding. We are not the kind for a get-on-the-dance-floor-and-party-all-night kind of wedding. Plus, we were working with a strict budget. We opted for a morning ceremony and light brunch reception. Collina Farm at Clifton Inn was the ideal location for our wedding. Not only was the farmhouse beautiful and the venue’s team incredible, but we had every convenience. My bridesmaids stayed with me and my parents in the guestrooms of Collina Farm, so when we woke up to get ready on the big day, we were already on site! In the days leading up to the wedding, it barely felt like work. All of the preparations felt more like fun! Being with my best friends at Collina Farm made for the ultimate slumber party, and having my parents so close by really allowed me to include, appreciate and honor them each step of the way. Our out-of-town guests appreciated not having to travel to a different location for the reception, too. Collina Farm had a courtyard space behind it that we used for our ceremony site. Afterward, guests walked across the yard to the farmhouse for the reception. Guests mingled indoors and outdoors, walking about with coffee mugs and plates of fresh fruit and pastries. It felt easy – perfect for our quaint wedding!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I did not realize it until I was getting dressed, but I had not yet put on everything together before the big day! So looking in the mirror for the first time with my veil, jewelry, dress and all was so exciting! I felt so ready!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Our vows were fairly traditional, but we did include two elements in the ceremony that made it extra-special. First, both Ross and I walked down the aisle with both of our parents, and during the ceremony, they jointly gave us their blessing. And second, for our benediction, my very dear friends who are married did a reading and prayer adapted from “A Wedding Sermon” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. It read, “What God has joined together, can no man put asunder.” They spoke it in unison and their voices together sounded so strong and loving. It was the perfect ending to our ceremony – apart from the kiss, of course!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Cooking good meals together, singing James Taylor songs together, visiting bed & breakfasts across America, and maybe even having our own bed & breakfast someday!

So much of the time, there is beauty in simplicity, no? Such is the case with Ashley + Ross’s lovely morning wedding. Not wanting to break the bank, these two chose a few details to focus on — sentimental milk glass favors, arrangements assembled by the bridal party, kraft paper signage — and didn’t worry about the rest. We are loving Ashley’s David’s Bridal dress (which she bought secondhand, resulting in an even more impressive steal!) and Elisa B’s photographs from the day. Check back soon for part two!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. I had finished up college in Texas and opted to do the Trinity Fellows Program in Charlottesville, Virginia the fall after graduation. Lo and behold, Ross, who went to college in Virginia, decided to stick around and was in the Fellows Program, too! We were attracted from the get-go, but attributed it to friendship until the spring. One day, we went to a vineyard, opened a bottle, and talked it out – we liked each other and it was official! We didn’t rush it, we took our sweet time and every day of dating was wonderful! We had dated just shy of two years when we got engaged. It was perfect timing to make for a short engagement and a summer wedding!
Describe the proposal. Ross is in law school, so the school-year is quite busy for him, to say the least. Over his winter break, we talked more openly about when we might get engaged. After admitting that my ring was taking a little longer than expected to make, Ross suggested that we start planning the wedding a bit since he was more available and we could make the big decisions together. I was on board and we started scouting for a venue. The day that we went to our venue to sign a contract, I had tunnel-vision set on the money and details. Literally two minutes after signing some paperwork and making a deposit, Ross and I were invited downstairs to see some final display items for our consideration. I walked into a room, looked at the plates on the table and thought “those aren’t the dishes they described to us for our wedding,” then turned around to find Ross down on one knee! He proposed and I said yes! The room was the venue’s beautiful wine cellar and the table was set for two. We enjoyed the rest of our evening sharing a bottle of wine and a private dinner. I was so surprised, it was so very special, and we didn’t have a care in the world – our date was set and our venue was already booked!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Sentimental, simple and elegant.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Some of my accessories were vintage. My pearl purse was found by my mother at a yard sale in our hometown of in Texas. My handkerchief was a gift from my great grandparents when I was born, saved and treasured for my wedding day. And the abundance of milk glass, oh my! My mother started collecting milk glass when I was a child – her affinity rubbed off on me and I had always known in my heart that I’d use those special pieces at my wedding! A couple of years ago, milk glass emerged in the wedding industry as a trend, but I knew I’d still use it, not because it’s popular, but because it’s meaningful. My mom had so much milk glass that we were able to share the love – our centerpieces doubled as favors for guests to take home!
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I had gone shopping for my dress a few times and though I had learned what silhouettes I liked best, I wasn’t finding something at my price point. One day, I spotted a dress that was only available online! I found it second-hand, but still new! It was a few sizes too big, but I took a risk and ordered it anyways. It turns out that it was a risk worth taking. My seamstress did wonders to make it fit and the dress was perfect for our summer morning wedding!
Describe your wedding flowers: White, white, white! And lots of hydrangeas! Our florist prepared the corsages and boutonnieres, but the rest were bulk flowers for us to tend to. The day before the wedding, my bridesmaids and I had a bouquet-making session in the morning and an arrangement-making session in the evening. The layers of white hydrangea, stock, alstroemeria and rose with touches of hypericum berries and waxflower, made with love by me and my dear friends, had me over-the-moon happy!
