Melissa + Matthew’s reception at Rock Quarry Farm was a wonderful family affair. I adore the fact that Melissa, Matthew and their son served guests pie at their receiving line, giving them the chance to thank everyone personally for coming. The pies were even made by friends and family! An Only Burger truck kept guests well-fed and a cozy fire pit topped off the night. Big thanks again to Jade and Matthew Take Pictures for sharing this sweet wedding!

Describe your wedding cake: We decided to do pie instead of cake, since we are both much more into pie. In order to take something off of our to-do list, we enlisted our friends’ and families’ help and had them all make a pie or two to share. It was a lot of fun and folks really enjoyed the variety and getting to try one another’s creations. Matt, our son Vince and I served the pie to all of our guests. It was our way of doing a traditional receiving line but with our own personal twist. We got to see all of our guests and thank them for coming and then hand them a slice of pie.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Probably our budget. I think it’s really hard to pull off a nice wedding for $10,000 or under and that was what we had to work with. But we started really early in the process, made some concessions with our decision making (I got my shoes for $10 from Payless as opposed to buying expensive heels) and ended up having the best day that our guests really enjoyed.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? We spent about $10,000.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Photography! After all was said and done, we knew that our photos would last forever and we wanted them to be really good. Jade and Matthew did a brilliant job and we couldn’t be more thrilled.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Getting to have all of our friends and family in one place. I just remember looking around at everything and feeling so blessed.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Matt actually wrote the whole ceremony! We both wrote our own vows. My favorite part was that he wrote his on the back of a photo of our son, very sweet!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Matt is working on finishing his dissertation and we’re enjoying our little family!

The South is all about hospitality, and Melissa + Matthew know how to make a wedding chock full of it! Guests were greeted with a helpful schedule of events and fun pennants to articulate their happiness for the couple. The bright yellow additions look adorable popping up from the crowd! I love Melissa + Matthew’s inclusion of family in the celebration, too. Matthew’s mother made Melissa’s gorgeous dress and the couple’s son joined them for the recessional. Even sweeter? Matthew wrote his vows on the back of a photo of their son and recited them to Melissa in front a quilted backdrop. Aww! Big hugs to Jade and Matthew Take Pictures for sharing this wedding!

Three adjectives that describe the day are: Fun, beautiful, memorable.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Everyone kept coming up to us saying, “This is SO you guys.” Every detail was very much us, but we didn’t really even realize it until it all came together. The burger truck was also a huge highlight. Only Burger makes a delicious burger!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I think the most “Southern” thing about our wedding was that we really wanted everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves. Hospitality is very Southern, after all. We kept a lot of the “classic” parts of a traditional wedding, but gave them all our own little touch (a receiving line with pie, a first dance- but only just the two of us and no spectators, cake toppers that included our son, etc.)
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Matt’s mother Debbie made my dress. We had gone to a bridal store not long after getting engaged and I tried on a few things to get an idea of what I wanted. Then we sourced patterns and material and she whipped it together over the summer. All in all, I got the perfect wedding dress for about $130. Plus, I got to make some really fun memories with my mother-in-law.
Describe your wedding flowers: I woke up at 6 in the morning on the day of the wedding to go to the local farmer’s market and buy flowers. It was really easy, since the flowers were all local and bright and beautiful. We slapped the bouquets together in about 20 minutes. It was nice to have such naturally beautiful flowers so that I didn’t have to spend a lot of time fussing over them. I don’t think I would have been afforded that luxury with roses.

    Where in heavens name did the benches for the ceremony come from?? I’ve been searching high and low for the same thing for my wedding! Jade if you check this can you let me know? Any info would be great!

      Jordan: The benches belong to the farm the wedding was held at. We were so lucky that they had them, cause I have no clue where we would have gotten them otherwise!

There are so many gorgeous Southern wedding ideas to be gleaned from Victoria + Michael’s celebration! Not the least of which, is how to still look graceful and elegant in the sweltering Southern summer heat. Step one, I gather? Choose a light-as-air Delphine Manivet gown. It also helps to have good-natured guests like those of V + M, who will still pull Christmas crackers and don crowns even in 95+ degree heat. Thanks to Amber Karson Events for planning, and Brian Tropiano for capturing, all of the gorgeous pink and gray details!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My family is British, and at Christmas, our table is set with Christmas crackers that contain a joke, a trinket and a paper crown that you pull apart with the person sitting next to or opposite you. We had our wonderful calligrapher write guests’ names on silver Christmas crackers and we used them as place settings. It was joyful to look around at dinner and see friends and family celebrating with paper crowns on their heads.
Describe your wedding cake: Michael and I really wanted pies at the wedding, so we decided to have a small cake, mainly for us to cut, and a number of our favorite pies (apple, blueberry and strawberry-rhubarb) for guests. At our tasting, we nearly changed our mind because the raspberry-cream cake that Windows Catering made us was amazing. We ended up sticking with the pies, though. However, shortly after the cake cutting we got pulled away to take photos and didn’t get to have more than a bite of cake. We’re planning to order some for our first anniversary to make up for it!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The late-breaking news that it wouldn’t just be hot, but that it would be the hottest day in the Washington area in over a decade. Having to adjust on the fly to make sure guests were as comfortable as possible at our outdoor wedding and that the ceremony could proceed as planned was a challenge. Thanks to our great wedding planners, who knew exactly how many industrial-sized fans we could plug into each outlet and who came up with the wonderful idea of handing out chilled towelettes, some late purchases of extra parasols and fans, and the great attitude of our guests, we managed.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Brian Tropiano, our photographer, was amazing to work with and captured the particulars and the spirit of the wedding.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It was so touching having our friends and family play such an important role in our ceremony. Good friends and family did readings and both Michael’s mother and one of the groomsmen and his girlfriend sang us songs.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are looking forward to a honeymoon early next year that will take us from winter in Washington to a romantic getaway in Paris followed by an island vacation in the Seychelles.
