See that first shot by Crystal Genes Photography? Adorable. And those wicker basket favors? Also adorable. I love the gold doilies that were tied on — just an added touch of glam! Britt + Heath and A Plum Perfect Affair worked together to create a reception at The Hotel Concord that would make the Steel Magnolias women proud. The pink and lace details decked the room and looked especially sweet combined with the couple’s pie bar! Britt’s mom arranged a special appearance from the Carolina Panther’s mascot, Sir Purr, who had everyone “hog wild dancing all night!” No one would have ever expected that the wedding lived through a changed wedding photographer (the couple’s first double-booked the day, but it worked out for the best!), broken bridal portraits, a chipped front tooth hours before the wedding, a wrong linen order, and a missing cake topper among other things!

Describe your wedding flowers: I knew I had to have peonies but the florist said they probably wouldn’t be available that late in the season. Luckily, it turns out that they were! My bridesmaids had ivory bouquets with small sprays of feathers, tied together with a black lace bow. My bouquet was the same except had splashes of blush and bashful (just like Shelby from Steel Magnolias!) peonies and was tied with an ivory lace bow. The groomsmen wore freesia boutonnières and the mothers carried a smaller version of my bouquet.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: We had a pie bar with peach pie, pecan pie and apple pie. Our wedding cake was two tiered red velvet with buttercream frosting.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. We went through three venue changes, and then our first wedding photographer double-booked the day, but we were so glad that happened because we ended up with the best! On the day of, we had broken bridal portraits, a chipped front tooth hours before the wedding, a wrong linen order, and a missing cake topper among other things! I dealt with it and everything worked out perfectly!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $20,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Without a doubt, the photographer. My Dad and I decided on this fact before deciding anything else. It was actually the only thing I splurged on and boy was it worth it. After all, the pictures are what you have to remember this day forever. Crystal and Ben are amazingly talented and were absolutely wonderful to work with!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? When my Dad and I were standing behind the church doors getting ready to walk, he said, “I’ll race ya!” It was a line from one of our favorite movies that only we would appreciate, and perfect for the situation. Right then the doors opened and I got to have my daddy, the model of what a husband should be, help me turn the page to the next chapter in my life.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No. But the Bible verse from our wedding was 1 Peter 4:8: “Above all, love each other deeply, for love covers a multitude of sins.”
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Enjoy the process. Don’t get your feathers ruffled about the little things. After all the mishaps we went through, I am a testament to the fact that it’ll all work out!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are enjoying our time together as husband and wife! Now that the stress of the wedding planning is over, we can get back to all our favorite things to do together: playing board games/Wii, throwing the football, grocery shopping and yard work! We are looking forward to kids someday, but we’ll enjoy spoiling our nephews for now!

Britt + Heath’s October wedding in North Carolina was a idyllic Southern dream for the bride. Playing on the colors blush and bashful (Steel Magnolias, y’all!), the couple planned a wedding that would be as sweet as the Carolina air. Britt fell in love with her Allure gown as soon as she tried it on. She then paired the lace beauty with killer accessories like her gold heels, feathery bouquet and an embroidered handkerchief that she inherited from her grandmother. The two said their vows at First Presbyterian Church before making off to the reception. Stay tuned for Part II, where Crystal Genes Photography shares even more of this glamorous day.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. When I transferred from Florida State University to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, we met through mutual friends at a fraternity party. We were friends for a few years before we ever dated. We liked each other but the timing was always wrong, because one of us always had a boyfriend or girlfriend. The summer of 2010 we were like peas and carrots. We spent most of our time going to country concerts, playing corn hole and just having fun. After going to my cousin’s wedding weekend in Banner Elk, we realized we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Funny how weddings will do that to you.
Describe the proposal. Murphy’s Law has a daily presence in our lives, and the proposal was no different. Heath planned to propose on a vacation we had planned for mid-December to celebrate my college graduation, but he couldn’t wait. He planned a romantic dinner at my favorite restaurant, and as usual, everything went wrong – but that’s what makes for the great stories and memories! The restaurant was supposed to reserve us a romantic table in the back by ourselves, but we ended up at the closest table to the door where all the traffic was. Our server ended up being a friend, so he spent a lot of the time at the table talking to us (obviously he didn’t know Heath was trying to propose). Heath rehashed his plan and as we were leaving, he walked me to the car and acted like he was opening the car door for me and got down on one knee and popped the question.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Fairytale-like, romantic, perfect
In what month did you get married? October – perfect weather for this Carolina Girl!
How many guests attended your wedding? 150
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I can’t pick just one, so we’ll name the top 3. My childhood friend, Colby sang Miranda Lambert’s “Makin Plans” for our first dance and Sara Evans’ “Always Be My Baby” for the mother/son, father/daughter dance. Having Colby sing made these moments even more special. My mom had a special appearance planned and surprised Heath and I with the Carolina Panther’s mascot, Sir Purr. Our first date was to a Panther’s game so it was only appropriate. Sir Purr had everyone going hog wild dancing all night!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? My grandmother had a beautiful collection of hankies, and when she passed away, I inherited all of them. I embroidered a personal note on each of them and gave one to my mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law and heath’s grandmothers on the morning of the wedding. I got my favorite one embroidered with our names and wedding date and wrapped it around my bouquet. The most Southern part was definitely the food. We served meatloaf, cornbread, fried chicken, crab fritters, sweet potato casserole and collard greens. We had Southern Belle cocktails with sweet tea vodka. Our wedding favors were corn muffins and jam and honey. I stayed up until four in the morning the day before the wedding with some girlfriends baking the muffins and making each favor basket. For the reception, I changed into my cowboy boots for the reception so I could dance.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Saying “yes” to the dress was the easiest part for me! I knew the style I was looking for (lace, with a sweetheart neckline) and as soon as I tried on the second dress, I didn’t want to take it off. After buying my dress, I played “dress-up” just for fun and tried on 20 more dresses! It’s one of those special memories I got to share with my momma that I will never forget.

It looks like Britt and Heath had their wedding party surrounding them and mixed on both sides instead of the traditional gals on left gents on right. Is that the case? How did that work? Neat idea!

Madi: I got married at the same church in December and the coordinator gave me the option of putting my maid of honor beside me, his best man beside him, and then match up the rest of the bridesmaids and grooms, putting them in couples on either side of us. We opted against it because she made it sound confusing with a lot of crisscrossing getting on and off the alter.

If the sight of a glowing sperry tent in the middle of a manicured lawn doesn’t already knock your socks off, then maybe the bright and flowing linens will do the trick. Or maybe the rows of farm tables topped with blue Ball Jars full of wildflowers? Whatever detail of Alex + Paul’s wedding makes your heart skip a beat, there’s no denying there are plenty to choose from. Courtney Spencer of Merriment Events worked with the couple to create a springy and oh-so-Southern reception. In addition to being delighted with fun pinwheels and a gorgeous tablescape, guests took full advantage of the dessert bar, full of pies, cookies, coffee, and biscotti. Big thanks to Don Mears Photography for sharing this with us!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Since many of our guests came from out of town, we threw a welcome party the night before our wedding, in lieu of a rehearsal dinner. Many of our guests had never visited Richmond, so it was exciting for us to use our wedding weekend to show them the city. The welcome party was at the 2300 Club, in historical Church Hill, which was a great introduction into the history of Richmond. The reception was held at Maymont Park, a sprawling estate in the heart of Richmond. In late May, it was the perfect time of year for the local flora to be a part of the scenery of our wedding. And we can’t forget the Southern pies we served for dessert!
Describe your wedding flowers: We collected over 300 blue Ball Jars from Ebay and hand washed and wrapped each. Kristi of Flower Girls was great to work with and listened to our requests. We wanted a relaxed home feel with the colors of spring. We let her use her artistic talent to create a beautiful landscape.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: In addition to the pies, we had a dessert table offering six assorted cookies, coffee, espresso and biscotti.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Our event planner, Courtney Spencer of Merriment Events, helped us figure out what details meant the most to us and our guests, and then took care of the rest.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our band, The Edge.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Seeing each other for the first time.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff! Hire people that you trust and give them the freedom to do their jobs.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We’ll be taking on the Big Apple for a couple years for job opportunities and look forward to moving back to the South after.
