It’s a good week here at Southern Weddings for my fellow pink and gold glitter-loving gals! After thoroughly gushing over yesterday’s wedding, I considered reigning in my enthusiasm a little for Katey and Matt’s post, but decided against it. If you know me, you know that when I get excited, I talk WAY too fast, so please read this quickly and drink in all the prettiness below!

As a wedding planner herself, Katey had so many creative ideas, but she knew she didn’t want to go overboard. Armed with Kate Spade as her inspiration and the beautiful Sanderling Resort as her backdrop, she created a perfectly preppy celebration! I think she found just the right balance of big and bright (hello ah-mazing paper flowers at the ceremony) and sweet and subtle (that LulaKate bow belt)! It’s also completely romantic that Katey and Matt held their wedding weekend in the same place where she realized he was the one for her–swoon!

I’m so glad Meaghan Elliot was there to capture this wedding!

Tell us all about the proposal! We were with my family in the Bahamas over the holidays. Although it seemed like the perfect time to propose, I had no idea it was coming, as we had briefly talked about getting engaged sometime in 2014 and then getting married in 2015. This vacation was in 2012! My sister and I gifted our parents with professional family photos on the beach as a Christmas present. While the photographer was snapping pictures, I turned around to check out the sunset, and when I turned back around, Matt was on one knee. It was the shock of a lifetime!

Oh, nelly! Wedding dress shopping was so much fun! For the first shopping trip, I brought my mom, sister, best friend, and a few aunts. We had a large group, but it was such a special time to share with some of the most important women in my life. I went back with just two ladies a few weeks later and found my dress! To make it more “me,” I found the perfect bow belt from LulaKate and a veil with three stripes on the bottom, which really helped complete my look and personalize it a bit.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes! I felt as though nothing would take away from that iconic moment when I walked down the aisle with my dad and saw Matt at the end waiting for me–even if we had seen each other before. I loved being able to see him and it helped settle a few nerves. We were able to get some pictures together and with the bridal party, which allowed us to enjoy more time with our guests after the ceremony.

Our bridal party walked down the aisle to “In My Life” by The Beatles, We thought that was a great song to celebrate all of our friendships with our bridal party. We went very traditional for the other songs–I walked down the aisle to “Bridal March,” and “Wedding Chorus” played when we were announced man and wife.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Matt and I were taking pictures on the beach at sunset when we came up over the dune to join everyone else who was already dancing. We stood up on top of the dune for a few minutes and watched our friends and family celebrating our marriage at one of our favorite places. The sun dipped into the bay and we went to join in on the party…we’ll never forget that!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: It sounds corny, but it was so amazing to have so many of our friends and family not only in the same state, but in the same 400-foot radius. Our loved ones are spread out all over the country and to have them all in the Outer Banks for a few days was so nice. As for the details, we didn’t even plan this, but guys ended up putting their escort card flowers on their shirt or suit pockets, so it was like all the men had boutonnieres. It really added a fun pop of color to the wedding in an unexpected place.

Describe your wedding flowers. Working with Renee Landry was fantastic, and with my ideas and her creative genius, we ended up with three looks for the tables. They were all rectangle or square and were inspired by a bright, colorful, Kate Spade look. We did small bud vases with massive peonies in them for the longer tables, and we sprinkled in garden roses as well. Everything was bright and bold and I loved it! We also spray painted artichokes gold to stick the table numbers in, and they turned out beautifully!

Since my family is from Pittsburgh and we are Italian, we followed a big Italian tradition in Pittsburgh of a cookie bar, where tons of family members bake cookies and serve them at the wedding. Since we had a destination wedding, we knew this wouldn’t exactly be possible. I ended up doing a cookie display with cookies that represented some of our favorite things–our hobbies, dogs, favorite sports teams, and of course, our monogram!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. I lived in DC for awhile working on Capitol Hill, and then headed up to Baltimore to pursue a career in advertising. Mutual Virginia Tech alumni friends brought us together a few times, but it wasn’t until Halloween that we finally met while aboard the Urban Pirate Ship that sails around in the inner harbor in Baltimore (kind of a hilarious place to meet!).
When did y’all get married? June 7, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 225
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I grew up going to the Outer Banks, and some of my fondest memories have happened there. After about a year of dating, Matt and I and some friends went to OBX in October for a long weekend. It was the first time many of my friends who didn’t live close by were able to meet Matt and hang out with him. Everything went so well (I figured it would, of course!), and it was on that vacation that I realized he was the one for me. How special to go back and marry him there! Guests stayed at The Sanderling, and we celebrated the welcome party, ceremony, reception, and brunch there. We wanted our wedding weekend to be a vacation for everyone.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had our bridesmaids read our wishes and promises to each other instead of readings. Some were funny and others were more serious–one wished us a lifetime of love, laughter, and strength through life’s ups and downs. In another, I promised not to not force Matt to eat all of the crazy healthy meals I make, like cauliflower pizza!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Being a wedding planner and working in weddings every day, it was hard to “stop.” I wanted to do so many things and had so many ideas/etc, but I didn’t want to go overboard or over budget. There’s just so much inspiration out there and it’s hard to narrow down ideas.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? More than $100,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I had our bridesmaids carry the boxes with the wishes instead of flowers. Since I chose a very expensive flower for the reception, I knew we needed to save somewhere. It was a fun unique twist for bridesmaids, and it saved me from having to buy 12 bridesmaid bouquets! A few of the girls carried huge paper flowers too.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? When you and your fiancé need to do some planning, go to an interesting place, like a park, a bench on the water, a restaurant (with Internet of course), etc. That way, even if you’re talking about less fun topics, it is not as bad if you’re eating a great meal or watching sailboats go by–we did lots of planning on Baltimore’s waterfront! Also, it’s never too soon to start purchasing things for the wedding! After you nail down your color palette and vision for the day, if you see a cocktail napkin design on Etsy you love, order it, even if the wedding is still five months away. Nothing is worse than praying for a shipment to get in on time!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We just can’t wait to see what the future holds for us. We’re in such a great time in our lives–so many of our friends are having babies, buying homes, and creating their lives together. We can’t wait to join in the fun with them!

My best friend and her husband celebrated their third anniversary on Tuesday, so I have been reminiscing about their Williamsburg wedding all week. One of my favorite memories from their wedding weekend is their rehearsal dinner at Kingsmill, so you can imagine my delight when I opened up these pictures from Courtney and Jared’s big day, at that same beautiful place! I love the sweeping Virginia scenery that framed their celebration, but I think my favorite thing about Courtney and Jared’s wedding is their use of monograms and their heart behind them. As Courtney said, “We love how a monogram serves as a unique representation of us as a couple.” Shouldn’t every wedding detail do just that?

Thank you so much to our Blue Ribbon Vendor, Katelyn James, for sharing this joyful day with us!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I love this sweet tradition! My something blue was my seersucker monogrammed garter. I had a lot of something news, including my dress, shoes, and jewelry. For my something old and borrowed, I incorporated all of my grandparents’ wedding rings into my bouquet. Unfortunately, all of my grandparents are no longer with us, and I thought that having their rings close to me when we said “I do” would be a great way to honor them and their long-lasting marriages.

We knew that we wanted to get married in Williamsburg since it’s where we met. We had played golf together at Kingsmill when we were in college, and once we toured the grounds again with a wedding-planning mindset, we knew that it was the perfect place for us!

Describe your wedding flowers. Flowers are one of my favorite parts of a wedding, so I knew I wanted to incorporate lots of flowers into our special day! Karen Roa of Aleen Floral Design was an absolute joy to work with–she is amazingly talented and brought all of my flower ideas to life! I love softer blooms like hydrangeas and peonies, so we tried to incorporate them as much as possible in arrangements. My favorite piece that Karen created was an ombré pink bed of hydrangeas that we used to display all of the escort cards.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We chose to combine traditional vows with a personalized phrase at the end.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Our officiant read an excerpt from “Union” by Robert Fulghum, and my sister read “I Carry Your Heart” by E.E. Cummings.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We love how a monogram serves as a unique representation of us as a couple, so we incorporated them in as many places as we could! Both of us grew up in Virginia and wanted to give our out-of-town guests a taste of the Old Dominion in their welcome bags. We included Virginia peanuts and Forbes’ saltwater taffy, made in my hometown of Virginia Beach.

We chose a traditional four-tiered wedding cake with our monogram displayed on the top layer. The cake was a vanilla cake soaked in Bailey’s with hazelnut buttercream and milk chocolate truffles between the layers. Soaking the cake made it super moist, and we were enjoying it for days after the wedding! I love the tradition of a groom’s cake, so I surprised Jared with one right after we cut our wedding cake–he loves Chipotle and the pastry chef at Kingsmill did an amazing job creating a red velvet “burrito” cake complete with chips and guacamole!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Hands down, our favorite part of the wedding was the fireworks show we surprised our guests with towards the end of the evening! Only five people knew about it leading up to the big day, and it was so much fun to have something unexpected for our guests.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in the fall of 2010 when we were both students at the College of William and Mary. We had both been roaming the halls of the business school for several years, but had never crossed paths until we were both chosen by a professor to participate in a special 10-person class that competed in a national tax competition at the end of the semester. We have been together ever since, and our professor and his wife attended the wedding!
Tell us all about the proposal! In the summer of 2012, Jared organized a long weekend getaway in Virginia wine country so we could celebrate his last few weeks of freedom before starting a full-time job. We love visiting this area together, and I was ecstatic to be spending a few nights at the beautiful Clifton Inn! After visiting a few wineries during the day and having an amazing dinner at the Boar’s Head Inn, we decided to go for a walk around Clifton’s property. I had just purchased a new camera, so I was eager to snap some pictures, so I handed Jared my black lens cap as we made our way onto the dock of the lake. After snapping a few pictures down on the water, I asked for my lens cap back, and instead, Jared placed a black velvet box in my hand! He clasped my hands and then proceeded to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him!
When did y’all get married? May 17, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 175
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? About six months before our wedding, we were informed that the LPGA was changing the date of its annual tournament at Kingsmill from its usual weekend to the weekend of our wedding. Hearing that tens of thousands of people would be roaming the property and the Golf Channel would be live broadcasting while we were saying “I do” was more than a little unnerving. After working closely with Kingsmill management, we took some extra precautions to ensure that our wedding ceremony wouldn’t be affected. The entire evening went off without a hitch!
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? My mother is a talented calligrapher, so we were able to save costs on addressing all of our invitations and place cards ourselves.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? All of our vendors were truly great to work with throughout the entire planning process, but we were most eager to work with our photographer, Katelyn James! I instantly fell in love with her work and knew she would be perfect for our most special day. To top it off, Katelyn and her husband, Michael, are one of the sweetest, most genuine couples we have ever met. We couldn’t be happier with our wedding pictures and will cherish them for the rest of our lives.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take the time to enjoy being engaged! We chose to have a long engagement so that we could have more time to plan and secure all of the vendors that we wanted. Even after almost two years of planning, I thought it all went by so quickly and I wish I could relive it all over again!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? A week after we returned from our honeymoon, we put an offer in to buy our first home, and shortly thereafter, we became homeowners! We are enjoying the process of making our first house a home and tackling DIY projects together.

With its big wraparound porch and brightly colored interior, Katie and Brett knew the William Aiken House would be the perfect venue to show their friends and family how beautiful Charleston historic houses can be. After nine years of living in downtown Charleston, I’d say these two could take us on quite the gorgeous tour! Katie and Brett complemented the classic Southern details of the home with the perfect neutral color palette of gold and taupe neutrals, plus a subtle pop of coral brought in with the bridesmaids’ dresses and florals. I especially love the floating floral installation that accented the gazebo ceremony backdrop!

Hugs to Dana Cubbage for sharing K + B’s big day!

My dress, Babs by Hayley Paige, was the first one I tried on at the first store I went to! A few weeks after Brett proposed, I went to try on dresses with some of my bridesmaids and absolutely loved the first dress. I tried on about twelve more, just to see, but I knew that Babs would be the one. I immediately called my mom and begged her to come to Charleston the next week to see it, so she happily drove down from Richmond!

Describe your wedding flowers. My bouquet included peonies, roses, and ranunculus, and was tied with an ivory ribbon. The boutonnieres were coral ranunculus with a touch of greenery, and Brett’s had a white flower in it as well. Each one was tied with twine. The bridesmaid bouquets were mostly white and ivory with a touch of color and greenery, finished with an ivory ribbon. The centerpieces were ivory, coral, and blush flowers in gold vases. We also attached greenery to the lounge chandeliers and tent poles.

We did decide to do a first look, as most of our married friends and our photographer recommended it. I had my doubts, as I wasn’t sure I wanted Brett to see me before the ceremony, but on the day of, I was thrilled we decided to do it. I was extremely nervous and it helped to be able to see Brett and calm my nerves. It was also nice to get the bridal party pictures finished so that after the ceremony, we could just enjoy our reception!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I’ve lived in Charleston for nine years now and have always lived downtown! It has a special place in my heart and I have walked past the William Aiken House tons of times. Once in college, I even said that I would love to get married there someday. After we toured a few other venues, we decided it was the best spot for our wedding. It had plenty of space, and we could do the ceremony and reception at the same venue, which was important to us.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The house itself is so Southern! It has a big wraparound porch and panel doors, and the interior is full of bright colors and antiques. It really reminded us and our guests how beautiful Charleston historic houses can be. We also had shrimp and grits with fried green tomatoes as one of our food stations!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had a four-tiered lace cake with a ribbon on the third tier that matched the sash on my dress. It even had a real peony flower, just like the flower on my sash! The first and last layers were hummingbird, the second layer was red velvet, and the third layer was carrot cake, all finished with cream cheese frosting.

For our first dance, Brett suggested “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones, and when he played it for me, I knew that it was the one. Her voice is stunning and we both love the song! For the father/daughter dance, I let my dad choose the song, and he picked “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart–I’m the youngest!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Brett and I met at a mutual friend’s party when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore at the College of Charleston. We were good friends for almost a year and then started dating at then end of summer 2003. We graduated in 2005 and 2006 respectively and then moved to Greenville before moving back to Charleston in 2009–we missed it so much! We were together for nine years before we got engaged!
Tell us all about the proposal! Brett proposed the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend in 2013. He had asked about going to dinner at a new jazz club, The Mezz, earlier in the week, which I was excited about. On that Thursday, I was feeling tired, so I emailed Brett at work to suggest that we go over the weekend instead. Brett insisted that we go that night, because we had company coming in for the weekend. I have to admit, when he said this, I though, “Hmm, he’s never insistent on dinner plans…could this be the night??” Once that popped into my head, I finished work and went to get my nails done, just in case! :) When I got home, Brett asked me to come up to our rooftop patio for a pre-dinner drink. It was a gorgeous night and he started talking about how long we’d been together. We could even see my college dorm from where we were, and we laughed about the memories from that time in our life. After saying a lot of very sweet things, Brett got down on one knee and proposed!! I immediately said yes and was so happy! Afterwards, we called our friends and family and enjoyed a lovely dinner at The Mezz.
When did y’all get married? March 22, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? I borrowed the pearl necklace I wore from my mom (it was originally my great grandmother’s, and my sister also wore it at her wedding). My something blue was the blue “I Do” undergarment I wore. My something olds were my pearl bracelet and earrings, and my something new was my dress, of course!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Walking down the aisle, I chose “Canon in D” by Pachelbel, because I think the song is so joyful and beautiful! Walking back up the aisle, we chose “The Wedding March” by Felix Mendelssohn. We had a string trio play the songs at both the ceremony and the cocktail hour.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I think the hardest thing about planning a wedding is picking out each little detail and then just hoping it all fits together! Hiring a wedding planner was the best decision we made.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? The groomsmen bought suits from Jos. A. Bank during the buy three, get one free sale, so they were heavily discounted, which was especially great considering we needed ten of them! We also ordered ties from TieBar.com, which were beautiful silk ties for only $15!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our band! They made the reception so much fun, it almost felt like a concert!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We made a fun sign with our wedding hashtag on it. Not very traditional, but it allowed us to see everyone’s pictures so easily!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My most memorable moment was walking out the door towards the aisle and seeing all my friends and family smiling back at me. My heart was pounding–I was so nervous, but so excited. I can still picture everyones’ faces, including Brett’s!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are hoping to buy a house in the near future, as we’ve been in our two-bedroom condo for almost five years. We are most looking forward to spending the holidays with each other–we have been together for nine years and have never seen each other on Thanksgiving or Christmas! I am now glad we kept holidays separate, because it gives us a lot to look forward to and we will be able to create our own memories and traditions together, as a married couple.
