Wedding days fly by faster than ice melts on a Southern summer night (trust me!), and are filled with so many wonderful moments that it’s hard to choose a favorite. Reading through each interview, I’m always so amazed at how different and incredibly touching each couple’s favorites are. I tend to cry reading each one, but I haven’t cried in about a week. Well, that record came to an abrupt stop because Josh’s favorite memory just got me good! He said “In that moment, I knew how lucky I was to call her my own for the rest of my life. In such a gorgeous setting, time stood still as she walked toward me.” Swoon!

Now can we talk about Ms. Melody and her amazing style? Between the top knot and the fur stole, I think she took chic to another level, not to mention, made me question my haircut choice last week!

She’s working it–what a beauty!

Describe your wedding flowers. This was one of my favorite meetings I had while planning my wedding. Josh actually didn’t attend, which I was thankful for, as he was a VERY involved groom! My planner, Ashley, and I had the opportunity to create some surprises for him with the wonderful Sara York Grimshaw of SYG Designs. Josh and I both loved the rustic look of The Cotton Dock, and Sara was able to create the romantic, rustic atmosphere I wanted with beautiful blue hydrangeas, white anemones, and pinecones.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We both decided early on that we wanted to do a first look. Josh was so nervous about messing up the vows and he knew that if he could just see me first, he would be able to say them mistake-free. It ended up being emotional for both of us, so it was nice to have some time to ourselves before the ceremony.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I grew up outside of Charleston, and always wanted to get married at plantation. Boone Hall was a perfect location and had everything we were looking for–Southern charm, rustic appeal, and plenty of opportunities for us to create a wedding that was better than we could have dreamed.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? From Josh: We did not. I would have been even more of a mess if I had to memorize anything!

Getting married at a historic Charleston plantation definitely gave us the perfect backdrop for a fairy tale Southern wedding. We tried to incorporate several things we love about the South for our out-of-town guests to soak in. We had an oyster bar with freshly shucked oysters from various regions, boiled peanuts on our bar, and a Southern classic for our signature drink–Coca-Cola glass bottles with a runner of Jack Daniels on top. Josh also offered up his homemade jalapeño dill pickles to be served with our BBQ sliders, and we had hot spiced wine to help keep our guests warm by the fire!

Our favorite detail of the wedding would have to be the decor. We were stunned when we saw how the lighting, flowers, and furniture all came together. Each table was decorated with flickering candles, sparkling mercury glass, and gorgeous floral arrangements. Rustic Edison bulbs dangling from the ceiling gave the whole venue a totally different feel then when we saw it at first.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My MOH, Mallory Imlach, took charge of all of these items and it was a complete surprise to me! She gave me a new sixpence for good luck that I wore in my shoe. My blue item was a “bride” tank to wear en route to our honeymoon. My something old was so special–it was a photo of my parents on their wedding day that she tied to my bouquet. Along with their photo, she tied a little piece of her wedding dress to it. My something borrowed was her cuff bracelet she wore on her wedding day that had the saying “And she lived happily ever after” inside of it.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our wedding cake was a beautiful three-tiered cake by the amazing Jim Smeal. He used our color palette of blues to create a stunning ombre ruffled cake with three large flowers to add a little more detail. I chose all the flavors, as Josh is not the dessert type–key lime coconut, chocolate kahlúa, and pecan praline. I would be lying if I said the thought of opening up our anniversary cake a little early hadn’t crossed my mind a time or two!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We were so lucky on St. Patrick’s Day in 2010, when we bumped into each other at a local pub. Introductions were made by a mutual friend and I instantly knew this guy was something. Ten days later, at the Carolina Cup horse race in Camden, SC, Josh made it “official” and we have been together ever since.
Tell us all about the proposal! Josh always had a special place in his heart for fall. One beautiful day in October, we made plans to meet our long-time friends outside of Greenville at a farm that had a pumpkin patch. We started walking through the pumpkins, looking for the perfect one. Little did I know, a few steps away, Josh had arranged to have “M-A-R-R-Y-M-E-?” painted out on on a row of pumpkins. Just as he got down on one knee and I said yes, a hayride of people went by and joined in our excitement with cheers. It was perfect!

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 130
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. During a last minute trip to visit my matron of honor in Greenville, SC, she surprised me with a trip to look for dresses. We walked into The Poinsett Bride in downtown Greenville and I just had a good feeling. A few dresses later, I had found the dress! With the help of the amazing seamstress at The Poinsett Bride, she and I were able to customize a one-of-a-kind dress that I absolutely loved. We added thin spaghetti straps and deepened the back to give the dress a little more drama, while still being classy and elegant.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Honestly this was the last thing on my mind. All I cared about was the handsome guy standing at the end of the aisle! But, to make sure everyone heard lovely sounds, we had a guitarist and my cousin played her viola. Our first dance was picked out by Josh, “To Love Somebody” by The BeeGees/Michael Buble. When he played it for me for the first time, I just melted. It was perfect!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The guest list! This is the hardest thing people don’t always tell you about. We decided early on that we wanted a smaller wedding, and after we had our lists from both sides of the family, the hard work began.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I think one way we really saved so much was hiring a wedding coordinator. I know there is a cost for this service, but I also know without a doubt that we would have spent more without the help of Ashely Wenz, our incredible planner!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Cru Catering did all of the food and drinks at our wedding. It was fantastic! We wanted Southern-inspired food and drinks, and they really took that notion and ran with it. They were able to blend classic Southern dishes with some flair–like collard green wontons, pulled pork sliders with Asian slaw, and shrimp and grits that were to die for!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Melody: The moment I saw Josh for the first time is my most cherished memory. His face was just so priceless and the time we got to spend together, just the two of us, took all the nerves away. My second favorite moment was when my Daddy and my uncles serenaded me, barbershop quartet style, with a song they had written together all about me! It was a complete surprise and it was so sweet and unexpected–absolutely something I will never forget! Josh: My most memorable moment would have to be when I saw Melody coming down the aisle toward me. Even though it wasn’t the first time that I saw her in her wedding dress, it was the first time that everything sunk in for me. In that moment, I knew how lucky I was to call her my own for the rest of my life. In such a gorgeous setting, time stood still as she walked toward me. Even though we were surrounded by our family and friends, it was like it was the two of just us.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s easy to immediately agree to a lot of additions and extra things you want, but things add up. There were a few things in our planning process that we thought we couldn’t live without, but when the day finally comes, you will be surprised by how easily you forget about them. At the end of the day, its about being in the fellowship of your closest family and friends, and celebrating the commitment you just made to one another.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Right now, we are enjoying spending time with our two puppies, and in the future, we are planning on buying our first home and starting a family together.

There are so many richly historic towns in the South, and since Grace and Bobby are lucky to be from one of them, they embraced the opportunity to be married in their hometown. They filled their Southern garden party wedding with nods to Aiken, South Carolina’s equestrian and golfing traditions, combined with details that were particularly meaningful to them. Grace’s biggest must-have, for example, was lily of the valley–her grandmother grows the sweet-smelling blooms in her garden and couldn’t be at the wedding, so Grace’s lily of the valley bouquet was a beautiful way to honor her. It also looked so elegant against the crisp blue and green wedding color palette!

I was very lucky to work for Karin Jeffcoat of Cote Designs after college. Karin is truly talented, and I knew from the start that I was not going to have to worry about the flowers as long as they were in Karin’s hands. I love the classic blue and white look, so my mother and I collected blue and white Chinese porcelain jars, vases, and bowls to use throughout the reception. The only detail that I was adamant about was that I wanted lily of the valley in my bouquet and Bobby’s boutonniere. My grandmother on my father’s side has a beautiful garden with lily of the valley that blooms in early May every year. She was unable to make the ceremony due to illness, but incorporating lily of the valley in my bouquet was my way of having her presence there that day. I just love how delicate and classic lily of the valley is, and they smell amazing.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? I really pushed to do a first look before our ceremony because I knew I would be a ball of nerves–it was Bobby who really wanted to keep the ceremony traditional. In the end, I was so happy that we decided against it because having the doors open and seeing Bobby down the aisle was so special. It felt we were the only ones in the room for that brief moment.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? The ceremony location was the church that I grew up attending with my family and grandmother, so it felt right for us to be married there. The reception venue was chosen because we really wanted to have an outdoor reception. Bobby is an avid golfer, so we started thinking about local clubs. The Palmetto Golf Club is a beautiful, historic club, and it was the perfect location for our wedding.

Bobby and I both grew up in the beautiful town of Aiken, South Carolina. Aiken has a great equestrian community, as well as a rich golfing history, being located just 30 minutes from Augusta. We wanted our wedding to really play to those unique aspects that Aiken has to offer. From the beautiful Episcopal church that I grew up attending, to a horse and carriage to take us to the reception, to our reception at Palmetto Golf Club that is one of the ten oldest golf clubs in America, we tried to take advantage and emphasize all these fantastic things for our “Southern garden party” wedding.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our ceremony featured the traditional songs of an Episcopal wedding, but one of the first things we did after we got engaged was to start researching bands. We love to dance and knew that the band would be one of our favorite things about our wedding. Our biggest requirement was to have a horn section, which is crucial for our first dance song, “You Are The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. We both love that song, but more importantly, I love that it is something that Bobby sings along to, which is exactly what he did during our first dance. Thinking about that still makes me smile. The father-daughter dance was “Tupelo Honey” by Van Morrison, and Bobby danced with his mother to Rod Stewart’s “Have I Told You Lately.”

My mother, a few dedicated family friends, and I built Tavern on the Green-inspired Japanese lanterns in assorted chintz fabrics to line the dance floor. It was a labor intensive process, but the lantern clusters really helped create our garden party atmosphere.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Bobby and I are both from Aiken, South Carolina and we met in high school. As cliché as it may sound, a date to prom was the start of our relationship. I went off to College of Charleston my freshman year of college and Bobby went to Clemson. After countless visits to Clemson that year, I decided to become a Tiger as well. It proved to be a great decision in all respects. Even after graduation took us to different states, we stayed together.
Tell us all about the proposal! I was in Italy for work the week before Bobby proposed, and as we talked throughout the week, he started throwing out very romantic ideas for his visit to Greenville the next weekend. They were very “un-Bobby-like” ideas, so I started to feel like he was up to something. That Friday, Bobby went to Atlanta (unbeknownst to me) with my aunt and uncle to go ring shopping. The ring must have been burning a hole in his pocket because he proposed within minutes of arriving to Greenville! I was so shocked, he had to tell me over and over again that it was not a joke and he was serious! My favorite part of our proposal was later hearing my aunt tell the story of looking for the ring. When he first arrived, Bobby kept saying that he was planning to propose around the holidays. After they started looking, the proposal date started to move earlier and earlier. After the ring was picked out, Bobby started planning a trip less than a month away so that he could ask. By the time the ring was sized and in his hand, he couldn’t wait and ended up asking that same weekend.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I have always loved classic gowns and knew that I wanted mine to have lace accents. My mother, sister, and a family friend came with me to a Brides Against Breast Cancer showroom. After a day of trying on gowns, we all fell in love with a gorgeous Anne Barge dress that featured beautiful ornate lace on the bodice. I absolutely loved the dress, and it felt great that the money went towards breast cancer research.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not. We followed the traditional Episcopal wedding ceremony.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We worked with Kyndra Shedd of Kyndra’s Cakes to create a dessert table with a variety of smaller cakes, in all different sizes and flavors. My mother, who is an interior designer, had collected a number of these wonderful antique wooden capitals that we used to display some of the cakes. That was one of my favorite details–it really gave their entire dessert table the charm that we were looking for. In addition to traditional layer cakes, Kyndra also created pound cakes with lemon cream to serve with fresh strawberries as a play on one of my favorite desserts growing up–strawberry shortcake.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: From the start of wedding planning, I knew I wanted to incorporate my love of Prosecco and all other bubbly cocktails into one of our bars. Bobby had his own bar that served wine and craft beers on a vintage barn table under a beautiful tree off the dance floor, but it was the Bubbly Bar in the porch rotunda area that we really had some fun with while decorating. Since we were outside, we also wanted to incorporate an outdoor grilling element for the food. We met with Christian Carlisle of Plum Pudding, who had a wonderful idea for grilled gourmet pizzas. Bobby and I love grilling pizzas in the summer, so we fell in love with the idea. His port poached pear and blue cheese pizza with port reduction sauce was hands down one of our favorite food items.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Since we were planning the reception outdoors, we made sure that we adhered to the Southern tradition of burying a bottle of Jack Daniels as fair weather insurance. My maid of honor and I had a great time digging a hole, then reciting the following poem: “There once was a groom and a bride, who planned a wedding outside. Their friend said, “Get Jack and bury him out back” to keep the rain aside. So they dug a hole with vigor to bury the bottle of liquor. There it will stay until the right day, and they’ll rejoice with a jigger!” It is only crazy if it doesn’t work, right? Well, Jack did his job! I highly recommend it for any couple planning an outdoor wedding or reception. Bobby is looking forward to digging up Jack soon, too.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Each and every one of our vendors was fantastic and I cannot say enough good things about them. Cote Designs helped bring our vision to life. Ashley Seawell was amazing at capturing moments throughout the day. Our caterers, Donna Jannik and Christian Carlisle, were fantastic and really helped create a menu that reflected our tastes for guests to enjoy.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Other than the ceremony itself, the most memorable moment was walking hand in hand into our reception, decorated just as we had imagined, and seeing our dear friends and family there to celebrate us. It is maybe the only time in your life that all your friends and family are in one place, so we made sure to have a great time and really celebrate the day with everyone.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Spreadsheets will become your best friend. The biggest advice I have for my friends going through the wedding planning process right now is to not stress over all the small details. In the end, everything will be wonderful.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Bobby and I have enjoyed settling down in Greenville, South Carolina and are looking forward to buying a house in 2014. We are ready for an exciting future together that will hopefully include many trips and wonderful new memories with family and friends.

One of the best things about Southern winters is that they’re chilly enough to permit all things cozy–fireplaces, hot chocolate, and furry coats, for example–but not so cold that a winter bride and groom can’t hold their wedding outside! Hannah and Jeremy prioritized showing their guests true Southern hospitality, and from the blankets that were passed out at the ceremony to the s’mores station set up at the reception, we’re sure everyone felt so loved and welcomed!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. When I went to go look for my wedding dress, I was really nervous. When I went to the store, I told my bridal consultant that the only two requirements for my dress were sleeves and lace. When all of the tulle dresses she brought in did not work, I asked to browse the dresses in the showroom. I walked straight up to the dress that would soon be my bridal gown. It was covered in an amazing lace, but it did not have sleeves. I had a quick consult with the seamstress, who was able to construct the sleeves that I wanted, creating my dream dress.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look. We made the decision to do so after considering how early the sun would go down in November, but even more so, we decided to see each other because we both felt it would calm our nerves. Having that moment on that day that only the two of us shared is something that we will never forget.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment from our wedding day was when our photographer took us off-location after our first look to take some photos of just the two of us. It allowed us to have a moment to ourselves away from all of the hustle and bustle of the wedding day. We were able to just chat and calm our nerves and really take in the moment. It was the only moment that day when we were really by ourselves.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows, but we chose a more modern version of wedding vows than the traditional ones. Our favorite phrase was “I promise to love you without reservation.”

There were hints of the South all throughout our wedding–the small town, the mason jars, the woodsy decor. The biggest Southern tradition that we wanted to portray, however, was our hospitality. Because our wedding was smaller, we were able to shower our guests with small tokens of our hospitality–blankets to warm them up during the outdoor ceremony, hot cocoa and apple cider, s’mores, and fireplaces, to name a few. We wanted to make sure each and every one of our guests felt comfortable and content, which is what each of them has done for us for the past six years of our relationship. It was the perfect time to honor them.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We would say that the most amazing vender we included in our wedding day was our photographer. Not only did our photographer help us to capture so many important moments, you could literally feel that she was creating magic behind that camera. It also seemed like she was everywhere at once. Every time I thought, “I’d love to have a picture of that,” there she was working her magic.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Jeremy and I met a little over six years ago at our university’s summer orientation. The girl I roomed with attended high school with a guy who played on the football team, and Jeremy was on the team as well, so we met through them. After orientation, Jeremy and I went our separate ways back to our hometowns. We officially started dating during the first month of college and have been together ever since.
Tell us all about the proposal! Jeremy created such an amazing proposal, it still doesn’t feel real sometimes. Unbeknownst to me (which is extremely rare, since I’m hard to surprise), Jeremy spent four months planning his proposal. On my birthday, he gathered all of our friends together to watch me open this amazing gift that everyone knew about and kept raving about. I thought for sure that it would be a ring. Instead, when I opened the box, I found tickets to see my favorite band, Mumford & Sons. In my excitement, I failed to notice where the concert was taking place–New York City, which is my favorite place. We were leaving two days later, so I started to freak out a little because I had work and arrangements to make before leaving, but Jeremy told me he had already taken care of everything with my work. He also told me to pack a really fancy outfit for one of the nights we were going to be there, so I thought that would be the night the proposal would take place. Once again, I was wrong. On the second day we were in the city, we ate lunch at a cute little pub in midtown Manhattan. After lunch, Jeremy said, “Let’s take a walk over to 5th Avenue and check it out,” to which I replied, “Nah, my belly is full. Let’s go nap in the hotel,” but he talked me into it. When we got outside of the pub, we noticed it had started to snow, which really made me want to nap, but I went along anyway. On the way over to 5th Avenue, we passed the LOVE sculpture, so of course I wanted a picture in front of it. Jer said, “Sure, let me get this random lady to take our pic.” While I waited in front of the statue, he switched the camera to video mode and came to stand next to me. Jeremy is super tall (6’9″), so when he got over to me, I told him, “Hey, you may need to duck down a bit so she doesn’t chop your head off in the pic.” He said, “Oh, you want me to duck down? Okay.” and proceeded to get down on one knee and pull out a ring. I, of course, flipped out and said “YES,” but it didn’t end there. After a few minutes of taking in the moment, I started to notice that there were two people with super nice cameras taking pictures of us. I asked Jer if he knew them, and he said he had hired them to be there. Not only that, but the random woman had taken a complete video of the entire encounter. And it STILL doesn’t end there! That evening was the evening for the fancy dress, which I thought at that point was just so we could go out and celebrate. As soon as I stepped off of the elevator at the restaurant, my jaw dropped. Straight across from me was a table of three of our closest friends, who had driven up from North Carolina to celebrate with us!

Describe your wedding flowers. We used succulents with splashes of blush flowers. We thought the succulent was a unique option for a fall/winter wedding.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. A family friend made our simple, but elegant, three-tier wedding cake. The top and bottom tiers were Jeremy’s favorite (carrot cake), and the middle tier was my favorite cake (lemon). The cake was covered in a smooth buttercream icing and was topped with a miniture LOVE statue replica, like the one in NYC that Jeremy proposed in front of.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I did have something blue, old, and new. My something blue was a pair of antique earrings that my nana gave me, which are nearly a century old and are adorned with a single sapphire stone. My something old was the gold bangle bracelet that my nana was given on her wedding day by her husband. My something new was my beautiful lace wedding gown.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge Jeremy and I had to overcome during the wedding planning process was to learn what was really important to us. People may think we are completely insane when we say this, but from the time you get engaged to the time you get married, life is an absolute whirlwind. It feels like the two of you are sitting completely still and everyone and everything around you is moving in fast motion telling you, “Do it this way,” “Put that there,” “Stand here.” During that time, Jeremy and I had to stop and focus on what really mattered, which was not just planning a wedding that would last one day, but rather, a marriage that would last a lifetime.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take in each moment! We had so many people tell us during the planning process that the wedding day goes by so quickly. We found that if you have prepared yourself to take in each moment, it will go by at your own pace. I even had one of my bridesmaids remind me throughout the day to take in the moment. Tt was like a breath of fresh air every time she told me to take a mental picture, because it was so easy to get carried away and forget to seize the moment.
