A proposal at the White House practically demands a patriotic red, white, and blue wedding, and thanks to their Southern summer picnic inspiration, Amy and Kenny’s big day was the epitome of all-American joy and fun! Along with tables nicknamed after favorite Washington DC landmarks, a darling sweetheart table, and the prettiest Rice Krispie treat cake (yes, cake!) I’ve ever seen, Amy and Kenny’s wedding was full of family and friends having a great time and lovin’ on each other. That’s definitely what makes summer so sweet to me!

Hugs to Jillian Zamora for sharing this happy day with us!

Tell us all about the proposal! Kenny is quite the romantic and he couldn’t have chosen a more perfect way to propose! Kenny is from northern Virginia and has a special place in his heart for DC, so when he took me back home to meet his family over Thanksgiving, we planned a mini trip for just the two of us in DC. He knew I wanted a memorable proposal, so he chose the White House as the location. As we walked through the White House, Kenny analyzed my every move and comment in each room, trying to decide which was my favorite (all the while, the ring was burning a hole in his pocket!). After moving through all the rooms, he took me back to the East Room, and as we were standing in front of the painting of George Washington, he proposed with the most beautiful, heartfelt speech. I couldn’t believe it, and neither could any of the other tourists! One of the Secret Service agents even let us go behind the ropes to take a picture to capture the special moment. I still tear up thinking about that amazing day, and I can’t believe he managed to sneak the ring through security!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my wedding dress at the first store I went to. It was the third dress I tried on and it fit perfectly–no alterations needed! It fit my personality and style so well–sophisticated and classic, with a touch of spunk. It was a strapless ball gown with a sweetheart neckline, and the top of the dress had ruching to give it some interest. There was also a line of buttons down the back that extended down the train of the dress. We added a sash that had some unfinished edge, fabric flowers, and just the right amount of beads to give it some texture and shine. I paired it with red and white polka dot kitten heels and an elbow-length, unfinished-edge veil to play up my style!

I chose Für Elise as the song that the wedding party and groom walked out to. I grew up playing the piano and that is one of my favorite songs I ever played!

Our wedding colors were red, cream, and navy, so that was the focus for the flowers. I wanted all of the florals to look natural, a little wild, and not too perfect. My florist did an amazing job combining flowers like blue thistle, anemones, daisies, and garden roses with natural greenery, and it was absolutely beautiful. My bouquet couldn’t have been more perfect!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We loved our “Picnic for Two” sweetheart table. The rosette tablecloth, the greenery draped across our chairs, and the chalkboard sign made our little area the perfect place for us to enjoy some time alone and look over the reception. I also loved that each table was named after a monument Kenny and I visited on our trip to DC. It was a unique way to tie the proposal into our wedding.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Being that Kenny and I are from Virginia and Texas respectively, a Southern wedding suited us perfectly! Some of the Southern details we incorporated included an iced tea bar (with a sign that said “Our love is as sweet as the sugar in our tea”), a summer picnic theme with Southern “cookout” food, Americana-inspired decor with a focus on beauty in simplicity, an engraved baseball and bat guest book (go Rangers!), and Southern foods with a twist–like pecan pie pops!

Our first dance was to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.” I always knew the right man would come along, but never thought I would be 30 before he did! It’s a big joke between the two of us that I waited a long time for him, so this seemed to fit. Probably the most special part of the night was Kenny and his daughter Ashlynn’s special dance. They started off with Tim McGraw’s “My Little Girl,” but much to the crowd’s surprise, they switched halfway through to Run DMC’s “Tricky” and totally rocked it out! They had practiced for a couple months beforehand and it was the biggest hit!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Kenny and I actually met on eHarmony. I had joined the site because I was finding it hard to meet someone in the area, and Kenny was looking for someone who was ready to settle down and didn’t mind that he already had a little girl from his previous marriage. I loved Kenny’s profile–it was witty, charming, and mature. It took us a little while to actually meet in person, but once we did, it didn’t take long for us to realize that we were meant to be!
When did y’all get married? June 28, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 90
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. Instead, we went with something special our pastor had prepared for us. I don’t think I would’ve managed to keep my emotions in control if we had written our own!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. A few buzz words we used to describe our wedding were family-focused, casual, fun, summer picnic, and sophisticated. To play up the fun and summer flair, we decided to go with a dessert bar. We had pie pops, macarons, moon pies, s’mores, lemonade tartlets, and a rice krispie groom’s cake! No one could get over how tasty and cute all the little treats were.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I had all of these covered! My something old and borrowed was my great-grandmother’s wedding ring. Her husband didn’t have the money to buy her a ring when they were first married, so he hammered it out of a quarter and she wore it for most of her marriage. I am so honored to be able to keep this special piece of jewelry, and I wear it almost every day. My new and blue was a stunning diamond and aquamarine bracelet that my parents gave me on my wedding day. I couldn’t believe it when I opened the box! My birthstone is aquamarine and I always have a hard time finding jewelry with it, so it’s definitely something I will wear every chance I get.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I think the biggest challenge while planning was discussing decisions with Kenny. As a bride, I wanted to be selfish and make this day about me and what I wanted, but that wasn’t fair to Kenny! I really had to step back and think about what his vision of our wedding was, and in the end, I think it turned out just right, thanks to our amazing wedding planners!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I loved them all, but I have to go with my wedding planners. Rayven Walker and Jen Rios were absolutely the key to getting the wedding of my dreams. With Rayven keeping me on track with budget and vendors, and Jen designing each little detail, they make quite the team! I know there are many things they did to help each other make it such a special day for Kenny and I, and I couldn’t be happier that I chose them!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The first look was probably high up on the list, but getting to spend our special day with family and friends was the most memorable part. I didn’t get to talk to everyone as much as I would have hoped, but knowing that they loved us enough to travel to our wedding makes me feel so incredibly blessed!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? The first order of business must be to get a wedding planner that you trust. Just knowing that they can add touches that you wouldn’t think about or find vendors that you can’t (or may stress yourself out trying to find) is worth it. Also, soak in every part of the day. Take a minute or two here and there to step back and enjoy the view. Sneak a moment alone with your spouse or by yourself to really see and feel everything about the event! And one last thing: make sure to eat!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Next is probably kids, as is with lots of couples. Kenny’s daughter, Ashlynn, is such a big part of our lives and I couldn’t imagine a sweeter child to have as a stepdaughter. I would love to add a child of our own to the family. I am looking forward to just loving each other and our families for many years to come!

Amy and Joseph’s wedding blended both of their families’ traditions to give their nearly 400 guests an experience filled with sweet Southern hospitality and a heap of joy! Just one of the many reasons I love reading Real Wedding interviews is finding out gems about why a couple chose a certain detail. In this case, I love how Amy’s cascading bouquet was inspired by an old portrait of her great grandmother that her mother had seen. Amy had also dreamed of having a Southern gospel choir at her wedding–I know that our own Editor in Chief would have been singing away with them!

Big SW hugs to Elisabeth Millay for sharing this lovely day with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. This was actually very easy for me! My mom and aunt saw my Monique Lhuillier dress in a magazine and sent me a picture text that said “This is your dress!” I love bows, and I also knew I didn’t want anything strapless. We went to Joan Pillow in Atlanta specifically to try it on and our consultant, Susan, was wonderful. She made me try on two other dresses before my dress to ensure I had seen others. As soon as I put it on, we knew it was the one.

We can see why Amy knew this was her dress right off the bat! You may recognize this sparkly Monique Lhuiller stunner from our V6 Cover Shoot! What a gorgeous dress (and bride, of course!).

The only real vision I had for the flowers was a neutral palette and lots of them! My mom also had a wonderful vision of a cascading bouquet–an idea she got from an old portrait of my great grandmother. Other than our initial vision, we entrusted the details to Heather and Kristin and they did a fabulous job. I was so happy with how everything turned out.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? The ceremony was held at our temple in Charleston, which is the oldest reform temple in the country. It has a lot of special significance to my family, who have been members for several generations and are actively involved in the congregation. I was actually a flower girl in my aunt and uncle’s wedding there! We knew we wanted to be inside and downtown, so we didn’t have very many options that fit our guest count. The Charleston Marriott was a perfect choice, and it exceeded our expectations. The service and staff were exceptional.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We really wanted people to feel the Southern hospitality in Charleston. Our graphic designer created an image of a plantation oak tree that we used on several of our printed materials, including our save the dates. Charleston is known for its sweetgrass baskets, so my mom had the idea to have sweetgrass napkin rings made for our table settings at the wedding. We got 400 made by a local Charleston basket maker, Nakia Wigfall, and it was such a special touch for the tables. We also had a Southern gospel choir singing outside the temple as people exited–I had been envisioning that for a while, and I think our guests really enjoyed it! We also were fortunate to be able to include all of our out-of-town guests in our rehearsal dinner, which I think was a great way to welcome people to Charleston. It was held at Lowndes Grove Plantation and was a Southern dinner, complete with a Lowcountry boil, fried chicken, and boiled peanuts!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We were really fortunate and had a very easy wedding planning process because we surrounded ourselves with a fabulous team. I think the biggest challenge for me was putting the wedding out of my mind and making myself focus on studying and passing the bar exam. I graduated from law school in May and sat for the bar in July, so I had periods when I couldn’t do any wedding stuff, even though it was all I wanted to do.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We were so fortunate to have Kristin and her team, who made everything so seamless and beautiful. Not a beat was missed!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? This sounds so cheesy, but the whole weekend was just incredible. If I had to describe the weekend in one word, it would be humbling. Having all of our family and so many of our close friends come from so far to be with us was such a special feeling, and Joseph and I will never forget it.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? When you get overwhelmed, take a break, because everything all works out. It is sometimes easy to loose sight of the end result, which is that you get to get married. Be sure to take the whole weekend in and celebrate each other.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We were both living in Washington, DC and met at a mutual friend’s house. We had actually lived in the same apartment building for about a year, but didn’t meet until after Joseph had moved out. We ended up having a great conversation the day we met and Joseph called me the next week to ask me out to dinner.
Tell us all about the proposal! It was the 4th of July. We had been out on the boat with some of our friends during the day and had plans to go to my aunt and uncle’s house that night to celebrate with family and fireworks. I was sitting on the sofa trying to motivate myself to get ready when Joseph just came over and asked me to marry him. It was a really special moment, and I was happy that it was just the two of us there for the proposal. Our families and friends knew it was going to happen, so they were all waiting to celebrate with us, which was so great!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did, for a couple reasons. We are an interfaith couple but had a Jewish wedding. In the Jewish religion, you sign a ketubah before the marriage ceremony, so once we decided to have a Jewish wedding, we knew we would be seeing each other beforehand. Our wedding was also in November, so we wouldn’t have gotten daylight pictures if we hadn’t seen each other before. Truly, seeing each other before turned out to be a real blessing. I was so much more relaxed because we got to ride a trolley to the temple together with our families and wedding party and hang out together before the ceremony. I completely understand why people choose not to, and it’s a personal choice, but for us, it worked out perfectly!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I have a very close friend from law school who is a classically trained singer. I wanted to walk down the aisle to something different, and I have always loved Alison Krauss’ song “When you Say Nothing at All.” Kaitlyn said she would sing it for me accompanied by the temple’s organ and a guitar player. I thought it sounded beautiful and was really unique. For our first dance, we danced to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We actually had a cake bar! My mom had seen a picture in a wedding magazine and got the vision for not just one, but five cakes, and Jim Smeal executed it perfectly.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I did! My something borrowed was my earrings. My something blue was a sapphire stone on the pearl bracelet I wore. My something old was an old family Bible that is covered in white lace. Every woman in my family has signed it on their wedding day, so it was really special to put our names in it. My something new was my dress!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Married life is great! Joseph and I are getting settled in our new home, and we are really enjoying life being able to spend more time together now that I’m done with law school.

Even though it has been over ten years since I lived there, I still can’t shake my love affair with Virginia, and more specifically, with Virginia weddings. Jenny and Jeremiah’s big day was equal parts elegant, rustic, classic, and romantic, and it’s the perfect example of why Old Dominion has a piece of my heart. As if the crisp blue and white color palette and seamlessly incorporated herb details weren’t enough reason to love this wedding, Jeremiah is an accomplished chef in Charleston, so naturally, he and Jenny spoiled their loved ones with the best of Charlottesville and Charleston’s cuisine, made by none other than their chef friends! Is there anything better than when a community comes together to make a wedding extra special?

Thank you so much to Sera Petras for sharing this gorgeous wedding with us!

Tell us all about the proposal! I had the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia and Kenya for a month and half over the summer, and when I returned, Jeremiah planned a trip for us before I had to go back to UVA. My family has been vacationing in Truro, Cape Cod since I was born, and Jeremiah has joined our family the last couple of years. It has become such a special place for both of us. Jeremiah proposed on the beach at sunset on the first night of our trip. His proposal was sweet and intimate and perfect!

Describe your wedding flowers. My vision for the flowers was to have a neutral palette that complimented the beauty of Rodes Farm and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. We went with a natural feel, utilizing lots of greenery and herbs to accompany the different varieties of white flowers. We were also able to incorporate herbs from our friends at Harvest Thyme Herb Farm throughout the wedding.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? I left this one up to Jeremiah. He decided to go the traditional route and see me for the first time in my dress when I was walking down the aisle.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. A friend, who is a beautiful singer, accompanied our piano player as I walked down the aisle. I let her choose the song and she could not have picked a more perfect one. It was called “Somebody Loved” by The Weepies. The combination of the song and her amazing voice had everyone, including Jeremiah, in tears.

Rodes Farm provided the most gorgeous backdrop for a weekend full of amazing memories. We chose this venue because of its beauty, the flexibility to hold all of our events in one place, and the ability to have all of our guests stay on or around the property. From the magnolia trees shading the porch of the brick farmhouse where we got married, to the historic barn where we ate and danced, the farm was the best detail.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Jeremiah and I wanted to include the traditions of both his current home of Charleston and our childhood home of Charlottesville in our wedding weekend. We accomplished this by throwing a Lowcountry boil and pig roast for our rehearsal dinner, and a Virginia-themed dinner for our reception. Most of our guests had never experienced a traditional Lowcountry boil, so we went all out to make it authentic, covering the tables in kraft paper and including whole blue crabs in the boil. For the reception, we assembled our favorite Virginia products that showcased the region, including country ham, local cider, apples, and cheeses.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Hire a wedding planner! We were lucky to have the awesome Amanda Gray of Ashley Baber Weddings coordinating for us. We could not have done it without her!

How pretty are these herb decorations? They’re a perfect detail for a chef’s wedding!

Jeremiah created the menu and had friends cater the wedding. He has so many chef friends, so it was natural for us to involve all of these wonderful chefs from Charlottesville and his fellow chefs from McCrady’s in Charleston.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Jeremiah and I are both from Charlottesville, but we didn’t meet until after I returned home from college. I was home working for a few months in between graduating and moving to Colorado, and we met at the restaurant where Jeremiah was a chef. After we started dating, we continued our relationship long distance. Jeremiah would fly back and forth to visit me once a month. After a year of long distance, Jeremiah moved out to Colorado to be with me!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. After not finding exactly what I wanted at the stores in our area, I turned to the internet. I had a vision of what I wanted and couldn’t believe when I found my dress online. The day it arrived and I tried it on, I just knew that it was the dress for me!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Food was a huge theme of the wedding, since Jeremiah is a chef. I had to pick out our cake by myself and was so nervous that he would not approve! Lisa at Hot Cakes was amazing and knew exactly what we wanted. Her first idea fit with our Virginia theme so well, I said yes right away: spice cake with fresh apple caramel filling and cream cheese icing. It was as delicious as it sounds!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I had lots of new, a handkerchief for my old and borrowed, and a blue bow inside of my dress that my sweet seamstress surprised me with.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? By far, the biggest challenge was planning the wedding long distance, with Jeremiah living in Charleston. Between the distance and his travel schedule, he did not even get to see the venue until three months before the wedding. Thankfully, I had a wonderful support system in Charlottesville, including my family and bridesmaids, Charlie and Amy, to help me make our wedding amazing.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Everyone says it and it is really true, but the wedding goes by so fast! I am truly thankful to have the beautiful images that our photographer, Sera Petras, captured to help relive all of the wonderful details and memories.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Walking down the aisle and seeing my friends and family all assembled, and Jeremiah standing on the porch with the biggest smile on his face. I will never forget that moment–it was absolutely perfect!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Jeremiah and I are most excited to be ending our long distance relationship and starting our marriage together in Washington, DC. I will be working at Children’s as a neonatal nurse and Jeremiah will be opening his own restaurant.
