Amy and Brian met on a double blind date on election night in 2012, and as the only two Republicans in the restaurant, their night may not have ended the way they would have liked politically, but personally, it turned out perfectly! After two new jobs and a new city, Amy and Brian knew they wanted to celebrate their wedding in a familiar spot: Naples, Florida. Brian grew up visiting the beautiful beach town, and Amy quickly grew to love it too. It was just right for their Southern Florida-inspired wedding, filled with bright and bold florals, and even miniature pineapples at every place setting! I love this nod to Southern hospitality, and I completely agree with Amy’s response to what could possibly be cuter than 150 miniature pineapples: “The answer is nothing.”

Thank you kindly to Set Free Photography for sharing this beautiful day with us!

Right before we got engaged, Brian received a promotional opportunity that required relocation from Chicago to Columbus, Ohio. Since our lives were a jumbled mess of moving parts at the time, I decided to travel to New York City, where my sister and maid of honor lives with her husband, for wedding dress shopping at the one and only Kleinfeld’s Bridal. I figured if I had to fly back and forth from whereever I might be living at the time for various fitting appointments, it would be best to choose a place that came with a free weekend’s stay (coupled with some quality family time)! My mom flew in from Oklahoma (where I was born and raised), and we made a fun girl’s weekend out of the trip, filled with lots of wedding to dos, dinners out on the town, and even a Broadway show! I walked into Kleinfeld’s with a handful of photographs of wedding dresses that were all completely and utterly different styles. I had a hard time expressing what I wanted to the sales representatives. but those Kleinfeld ladies sure did hit it out of the park! I felt so beautiful when I tried on my dress–I immediately knew it was the one!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We got married in Naples, Florida, where we go every year for Thanksgiving! Brian has grown up going to Naples with his parents and grandparents. I have grown to adore the place–nothing beats the combination of sunshine, the beach, and family!

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did not do a first look, and it was one of the easiest decisions of the whole wedding planning process, since it was one of Brian’s only real demands! Brian wanted the first time he saw me on our wedding day to be when I was walking down the aisle to meet him. If there is one thing my husband is not, it’s emotional, but as that moment was happening and I got closer to him, I saw that he was crying. He never, ever, ever cries, and it was one of the most special moments of the day.

My something borrowed was the most special “something.” Brian’s mother passed away after a long battle with cancer a few years ago. I didn’t get the opportunity to meet her, but he raised my husband into the man he is today, so I know she must have been an incredible woman. During my bridesmaids’ luncheon the day before the wedding, my two sister-in-laws gave me her wedding band as a gift for my something borrowed. I have worn it every day since the day I received it. My something old was a coin that my Nana, my mother, my sister, and I all wore in our shoes on our wedding days. I had to tape mine on the sole, since I wore sandals!

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Everyone was incredible, but I have to say my sister, Emily Collins. She did all of the calligraphy for the wedding, from the save the dates and invitations, to the place cards, to the beverage signs, to the escort sign, to the programs, to the welcome baskets, and much more (pretty much on every piece of stationery in my wedding!) She is a high-end interior designer and architect by trade, and it was so incredible to have a little piece of her in my wedding in these ways. I love her dearly and will be eternally jealous of her amazing artistic abilities!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We had real miniature pineapples above each place setting. It was such a small, discrete detail, but I was head over heels for them! What could possibly be cuter than 150 miniature pineapples? The answer is nothing.

We had two different types of wedding cake (for chocolate and vanilla lovers), and we also had yummy desserts served at the tables immediately following dinner. The desserts were very Florida-inspired–chocolate-covered strawberries, fresh fruit tarts, Key lime pie tarts, and cannolis. The Key lime pie tart was probably my favorite!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We first met on a double blind date on the night of the 2012 presidential election. We were inadvertently set up by one of my best friends and bridesmaids, Emily, and one of Brian’s fraternity brothers, Jake (we have to give credit where credit is due!). We were the only Republicans in the entire restaurant, so we ensured all of our drinks were sent to us red, infused with grenadine. While the night didn’t end well for us politically, professionally (hello, mini market crash), or physically (work was not fun the next morning), it did work out personally!
Tell us all about the proposal! Brian proposed to me on a summer night in August. He told me that he had made dinner reservations for us at Gibson’s, a Chicago favorite. As I began hailing a cab from our apartment to the restaurant, he grabbed my hand and started walking me down the street and across the Wells Bridge that extends over the Chicago River. He led me to the front of the restaurant and bar where we had first met two years before, and we sat on the patio for a drink before heading over to Gibson’s. After a delicious meal, we walked out of the restaurant, and he started directing me to an unknown location. We ended up on the Lake Michigan beach, with the beautiful Chicago skyline lit up behind us. Before I knew it, he was on one knee, asking me to marry him. It was beautiful, private, and perfect, and one of the happiest days of my life. After the proposal, he led me to a fancy schmancy hotel in downtown Chicago, complete with an overnight bag packed by one of my best girlfriends, rose petals, and a bottle of celebratory champagne. The room faced the water, so we watched the Navy Pier fireworks go off while excitedly calling all of our best friends and family members. The next morning, Brian took me to a surprise brunch, where all of our friends were anxiously waiting for us!
When did y’all get married? April 18, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had two readings: “A Marriage” by Mark Twain and Romans 12:1-2, 9-18.
Describe your wedding flowers. In one word, stunning! I might be a little biased, but they were the most beautiful florals I have ever seen! Bright, tropical, fun, flirty–exactly what I had envisioned!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Plaid bow ties and navy suits, pink champagne and whiskey ginger signature cocktails, a stocked cigar bar cart with custom labels and match sets, and Southern Florida-inspired bright and bold florals, to name a few!
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We moved cities (from Chicago to Columbus), got two new jobs, purchased a home together, and moved into said home, all while we were planning our wedding! It was an extremely busy time, but all of these moving parts were true blessings!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t dwell in the details, enjoy every moment of the planning process, and approach the bumps in the road with a light heart–everything will end up as perfectly as you imagine!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Travel, settling into a new city, making new friends, and (of course) kids!

Allison and Mark’s wedding day exudes so much brightness and joy–of course, fun seersucker details and their cheery color palette, accented by Lilly Pulitzer, didn’t hurt! This adorable couple wanted to create a wedding with old-fashioned tradition, but still incorporate a bit of uniqueness in their day. I love how they chose to stick with a traditional location–they actually celebrated their reception at the same beautiful, historic home where her parents had their wedding over 25 years prior!–but they added their own flair with fun decor. As a fellow Lilly girl, I’m pretty much smitten! Not to mention, the photo of Allison and Mark sharing a prayer with their families made me burst into tears–it’s everything I love about weddings wrapped into one meaningful moment.

Gracious, I’m so glad our friend and Blue Ribbon Vendor Faith Teasley was able to capture all these sweet details and exuberant joy!

Everything about our wedding, from the decorations to the food served to the ceremony details, reflected a simply Southern wedding. We chose to have our wedding in the spring so that Mark could incorporate his beloved seersucker, and I could incorporate Lilly Pulitzer. I rode to the ceremony and Mark and I left in a vintage car from the 50’s that was the perfect color. We served foods that we felt represented us and North Carolina, like carved pork, country-style vegetables, unique salads, and Carolina shrimp and grits. Of course, monograms were on everything and we included bow ties too!

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? Mark and I really wanted our wedding to be very old-fashioned and traditional, but also incorporate some unique things. We wanted to see each other for the first time on our wedding day when I walked down the aisle, but we also decided to do a modified “first look” to share a few moments together before the wedding. We met at the corner of the home where our reception was held and held hands around the corner for a few minutes while exchanging small gifts and sharing a prayer with our wedding party and parents. It was a very special moment I will always remember, and we are glad we decided to do it.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We chose to state traditional vows, and we also did a responsive reading that gave our friends and families a chance to speak for us as a couple. Most of our family was in the wedding party, and they had been practicing the long line that they were supposed to recite during the ceremony. They somehow forgot when to start their line during the actual ceremony, and I’m sure the crowd still wonders why we all smiled and began to chuckle.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? 1 Corinthians 13. Of course, these are common verses for weddings, but they have always meant so much to both of us and we wanted to incorporate them into our ceremony.

All of our vendors were excellent to work with and complemented each other and our vision very well. When we started the wedding planning process, we knew that one of the first things we needed to find was a photographer. I came across Faith’s photography and fell in love with her work immediately. She did the best job representing our wedding day and our style, while capturing all of the details that made our celebration so special.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Our ceremony was held at my home church, Westfield Baptist Church, in Dunn, North Carolina. It was a very special place for both of us, considering Mark had actually been dedicated in the church before his family moved. The reception was held at The Howard House in Dunn. It is a beautiful, historic home in the downtown Dunn area, and where my parents had their wedding reception over 25 years ago!

Describe your wedding flowers. We wanted to use flowers that were the perfect accents to the ceremony and reception, without distracting from either of the spaces. Mark’s grandmother grew flowers and sold them at the NC Farmer’s Market for the longest time, and flowers have always been a big part of our relationship and our lives. We pink and white peonies, hydrangeas, tulips, and ranunculus in our bouquets and boutonnieres. At the reception, we used arranged our flowers in vintage blue mason jars.

We are such cake snobs! We were dreading the whole cake experience, because we wanted it to be gorgeous, but we also wanted it to taste good. We couldn’t decide on a flavor, so we went with two. One layer was a traditional almond wedding cake with buttercream, and the other layer was a vanilla cake with strawberry cream between the layers and a decorative buttercream frosting. It was beautiful, delicious, and perfect for our wedding.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We have known each other all of our lives, but because of our age difference, we were never in school at the same time and our paths rarely crossed. I was still in college, but would go work in my hometown during the summer and on holiday breaks. Mark’s first job out of college landed him in our hometown as well. I had my eye on him for awhile, and with a little help from my cousin, who was Mark’s co-worker, I went for it! I finally worked up the guts (very unlike me) to send him a Facebook message (mature, I know). I told him that I thought he knew I had my eye on him, and if he wanted to grab dinner and get to know each other better, to let me know. We went on our first date on Friday the 13th (yikes!) over three years ago and continue to fall more in love every day!
Tell us all about the proposal! We lived a decent bit apart from each other while we were dating because of where our jobs were at the time, but we would make a point to work out or grab dinner together at least once or twice a week. Mark had just gotten back from a week-long business conference and told me that if I wanted to see him mid-week, I would have to make the trek to his house for a run and dinner afterwards. I pulled up to his driveway, expecting him to be waiting for me in running clothes. He was still dressed up and rocking on his front porch, waiting for me. I ran up, asking why he wasn’t ready for our workout, and he just replied that he was relaxing and wanted me to sit with him. I sat with him for a little while, and then he pulled out a shirt box that was wrapped up. We never kept up with monthly dating anniversaries, but he noted that we had been dating exactly two and a half years on that day and that he wanted to get me something. When I opened the box, it was a new monogrammed beach cover-up with my now-new monogram. I had wanted this cover-up for awhile, but didn’t want to buy it and then only wear it for a little while before my monogram changed! I loved it, but I just kept saying, “Mark, this is so wrong.” I was slightly irritated because we were not married and it didn’t seem fair to have something newly monogrammed with the wrong initials! He then got down on one knee and told me that he was ready for my name to change. Some sweet words followed–he has no idea what he said, and of course, neither do I. I was in complete shock, but it was the perfect proposal for us because I never saw it coming. I may or may not have thrown the shirt box over my face and screamed, “Now?! Right now?!” I was so in such shock, I couldn’t even eat dinner afterwards!

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I have a design background, so I designed all of the wedding stationery and used a local printer, which saved a lot of money. We made all of the signs and hanging decorations ourselves the day before and morning of the wedding.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I think one of the neatest moments of our wedding was when we excused the crowd ourselves after the ceremony. Mark and I left the ceremony, followed by our attendants and family, and were able to spend a few moments alone while we waited for the processional. We then entered from the front of the church and excused our guests row by row. We loved getting to exchange hugs and sweet memories with each of our guests.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take it all in, relax, and remember that it is just a day. If something doesn’t go perfectly, it will be okay. You have the rest of your lives to laugh about it!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are heading to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket for a delayed honeymoon. After we return, we look forward to getting our home, yard, and life back in order and sharing it together for many more years to come. We also have to finish all of our furniture renovations so we can park in our garage again!

We are so very lucky that the South is home to some of the most beautiful locations to tie the knot–many of which are filled with rich history and generations of love stories that have passed through their doors. Catherine and Nelson’s gorgeous venue not only has those sweet details, but so much more! Their venue story goes all the way back to the summer before Catherine turned five–this sweet couple actually celebrated their marriage on the land where Catherine grew up, and where her parents intentionally built cottages (one for each of the children in their family), an adorable chapel, and their family home. Catherine grew up imagining herself walking down the aisle in Grace Chapel to join the man of her dreams in marriage–swoon! I’m sure of all the weddings the Heritage Haus has hosted, this one in particular will never be forgotten.

Gracious, we’re happy our Blue Ribbon Vendor Loft Photography shared this sweet day with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I went to several appointments with my mom, my mother-in-law, and friends, but I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. Many of the dresses were so close, but were missing that something special. Finally, I made an appointment to go to a different store by myself. The second I put on my dress, I knew it was what I had been looking for, and I purchased it that day.

My bouquet held white peonies, patience garden roses, white ranunculus, vendela roses, silver dollar, and seeded eucalyptus. The bridesmaids’ bouquets mimicked mine and included brunia berries to accent the slate color of their dresses. The same flowers were used throughout the wedding–attached to chairs along the chapel aisle, in a garland adorning the chapel entrance, dotted around the pavilion for cocktail hour, and in the reception table arrangements.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? It all started the summer before I turned five when my parents moved our family from Houston to the small town of Dripping Springs, Texas and bought a house on a 30-acre plot of land. My mother is a dreamer and a creator, and she had a vision to build on our property. Although the intent was to create this estate for our personal family use, I don’t think anyone could have imagined just how special our home would become to so many people. It was a very slow process: the cottages (one for each of the children in my family), then Grace Chapel (which was dedicated by our family pastor who performed my wedding ceremony), and then the rest fell into place. I adore my family home. I have lived there for the majority of my life and have countless cherished memories of growing up out in the country. I had imagined walking down the aisle in Grace Chapel to join the man of my dreams in marriage so many times when I was growing up. It meant so much to be married there and share my home with my closest and dearest family and friends.

My most memorable moment was waiting for the doors of the chapel to open. Standing with my dad on one side of the doors and the anticipation of becoming a wife and standing with my husband on the other side was a moment in time that can never be recreated.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We were married in my family chapel on the property where I grew up. A pair of antique cypress doors from my mother’s home state of Louisiana mark the entrance of Grace Chapel. The ceremony was officiated by our longtime friend and pastor, who had baptized me when I was a child. Several pieces of silver that have been passed down through generations of my family were incorporated into table settings and displays.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? It will all get done, so enjoy this moment! If your budget allows, a wedding coordinator will help tie up loose ends and ensure your day runs smoothly. I loved my coordinator! Try not to stress about the small details (even though you probably will). Inevitably, those will be the things you don’t notice as much on the wedding day. Focus on building your love and encouraging each other, because this is the beginning of the rest of your life.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Dancing! Nelson and I are typically not the first to bust a move on the dance floor, but the band’s energy and our wonderful DJ kept the party flowing and full of life! We didn’t stop dancing until the very end, and even our guests chanted for an encore from the band.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. I had just moved to Houston the month before I met my husband. One night, at a fun local bar my friends and I used to go to, this tall guy came up to talk to me. After chatting for a while, we found out that we had mutual friends. I explained to him that, being new to town, I was looking to get to know people and that I wasn’t ready to date anyone. He got my number and the phone calls rolled in (he even called me that night and left a hilarious voicemail that I still replay to this very day!). He would call me at 2 P.M. on the dot each day when I got off of work to ask to hang out. I made lots of excuses about being busy, but after a full week of his phone calls, I came up with what I thought was the perfect solution: we could be running buddies! I figured that if he saw me sweaty and in workout clothes, he wouldn’t want any romantic relationship with me. We ran together regularly for a month, and talked about our jobs, families, friends, and everything in between. Since we had become friends, I invited him to a Super Bowl party at my house. After the game was over, he asked if we could take my dog for an evening stroll through the neighborhood. When we were approaching my house at the end of our walk, he stopped walking, leaned in, and kissed me. Completely shocked, I said “I can’t believe you just did that.” It probably wasn’t the response he was looking for! The rest has been history!
Tell us all about the proposal! Nelson, our dog, Teddy, and I drove up to Colorado last June to stay at my family’s summer home–a fun getaway from the Texas heat! The second day we were there, we took a scenic drive with Teddy on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. It was so incredible! After nearly three hours of sightseeing, we finally reached the top. I offered to drive back down, since the roads were so narrow that Nelson hadn’t gotten to fully enjoy the views on our drive up. On the way down, he kept insisting that I stop at the lookout points we had already visited. I, being tired, told him I wanted to keep driving so we could get home for lunch. I could tell something was up when he didn’t let up about stopping, saying he wanted Teddy to have one final run around outside. Finally, I pulled over into a thicket. I was hungry, tired, and exasperated that we had already stopped at every lookout point there possibly was, so I told Nelson that I would wait in the car while he and Teddy played. That definitely didn’t work, because he came up to the driver’s door, opened it for me, and said he REALLY wanted me to get out and play with them. Thankfully for Nelson’s sake, I got out of the car and started walking toward the thicket. When I turned around, Nelson reached for the zipper on his fishing shirt pocket, got down on one knee, and proposed.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The recessional song was “Blackbird” by The Beatles. The first time I went to Nelson’s apartment when we were dating, he played that song for me on his guitar. I am very emotionally attached to music, and every time I hear that song, it reminds me of the excitement and joy of the relationship we were building. Our first dance was to “In My Life” by The Beatles. The lyrics of the song resonate with me–I’ve been on many adventures in my life, some even taking me across the world, but those experiences all brought me to Nelson. “Though I know I’ll never lose affection, for people and things that went before, I know I’ll often stop and think about them, in my life, I love you more.”
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something old was my grandmother’s pin, attached to ribbon on my bouquet. The pin was given to her as a young woman by her father. My something new was my wedding gown. I borrowed my mother’s pave diamond earrings, which were a gift to her from my father on the day I was born. My something blue was my sapphire ring, a keepsake belonging to my husband’s aunt that was given to her by her father.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Taking on the role of husband and wife bears a lot of responsibility. I am excited about the opportunities God has in store for us to grow and learn together, whatever those may be.
