I’m all for extended celebration periods, which is why I love hearing about couples like K + T who plan wedding weekends rather than just wedding days. As bride, K puts it, “We envisioned and created a wedding in which our guests (and even the band members!) were “Windsor” houseguests for an entire weekend. Windsor members generously opened their homes so that everyone could celebrate ‘on campus.’ While the wedding was stylish and sophisticated, the atmosphere during the entire weekend of events was friendly and relaxed — trademarks of true Southern hospitality.” We couldn’t agree more!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We first met in high school growing up in Washington, DC where we had a common group of friends. We both had slight crushes on each other but were both a little shy, and nothing came of it. We went off to college and didn’t really have any contact with each other for 4 or 5 years. After college, we were both living in DC and ran into each other one night. Realizing we still liked each other, and feeling slightly less shy than before, we traded text messages, ad met each other out a few times. Before long, we were dating.
Describe the proposal. (From the groom) We had planned a trip to Paris with another couple in the spring of 2010. The topic of marriage had come up between us, and K was partially thinking and hoping that a proposal would happen there. I did my best to convince her otherwise, then bought a ring a few days before our flight. After three days in Paris, I let our friends in on my secret, and we agreed to split up on the fourth day. K and I walked around the city as I looked for an inspiring spot to pop the question. After a long day of walking, we headed home, and I asked K if she wanted to stop and sit in a nice little park near our apartment. “No way, let’s go take a nap,” she replied. Back in our apartment as she got ready to lie down, I sat down next to her, fumbled around for the right words, and eventually produced the ring and asked if she would marry me. She said yes!

Three adjectives that describe the day are: perfect, perfect, perfect. Another three? Magical, elegant and classic.
In what month did you get married? April
How many guests attended your wedding? 130
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our hand-crafted starfish place cards. Some guests liked them so much that they turned them into boutonnieres!
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Within two weeks of our engagement I had found my wedding dress. We were living in Chicago at the time, and I went to nearly every wedding dress vendor in town until I found “the one.”
Describe your wedding flowers: Bouquets were filled with peonies, roses, and hydrangeas. Floral table arrangements were clean and simple: white with pink accents amongst candles suspended in water-filled vases.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Our cake was chocolate with a raspberry filling and white icing with white chocolate shavings. We still have a piece saved in the freezer for our first anniversary!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge for us was the fact that it was an out-of-town wedding. Luckily for us, T’s mother spent a lot of time down at the wedding location and was incredibly helpful as our eyes and ears on the ground.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The band. We love the Dexter Lake Club Band!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? T getting up on stage with the band and serenading me with the Beatles’ “Something.”
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? I will be starting a Master’s program in Nurse Anesthesia in the fall, and T has hopes of one day going into business with two of his groomsmen. For now, we will continue taking care of our two adopted dogs, and we hope to start a family of our own a few years down the road.

“We like frosting.” The banner above Jeni + Nate’s dessert table (crafted by Beaches Pastry) pretty much sums up this sweeter than sweet wedding, don’t you think? The Southern Weddings gals all adored the mix and match centerpieces full of poppies put together by Shea Hopely, and are so glad Brooke Images was on hand to capture all of the pretty!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The main things were the beautiful venues, especially the reception site with the spectacular hanging moss on the trees surrounding it.
Describe your wedding cake: I preferred the homemade cake look that has been really popular lately on the wedding blogs and in the DIY scene. To me, it looked so much more appealing and appetizing than a perfect, hard, decorative cake fondant. I found a pastry chef that was amazing and she concocted the most unusual strawberry cake, made with real strawberries. It tasted as though you were biting into a strawberry. She topped it off with a variety of frostings: buttercream, strawberry buttercream, and cream cheese. There were 3 small cakes and several dozen cupcakes for variety. What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was time. I’m in a Masters program for Interior Design in DC and my semester lasted from January to the middle of May. I had almost no time to plan! Critical elements came together in the last 2-3 weeks before the wedding (like finding the DJ, minister, baker, and florist!). I think this proves that anything is possible.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000 – $25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The flowers! My florist was amazing, I could never have come close to what she did. I had a vision and I needed someone who could implement that and Shea Hopely was flawless. What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Definitely when my dad was walking me down the aisle and I was able to see all at once everything coming together, from the music and clothing to the decorations and the setting. I had so many concerns, but the whole scene was better than I had hoped and the sense of support, to have all of our friends and family in the audience, was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? I was very inspired by the traditional nature of the royal wedding, which took place about 1 month before our wedding. The content resonated with me so much that I literally transcribed every word and used it as a starting point. It turns out that a lot of it is simply traditional vows, but it also inspired other readings and aspects of our ceremony. I particularly loved the clear explication of exactly why we get married which provides a foundation for the rest of the ceremony.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are staying in DC! I recently began working for an architect firm as a designer, and Nate is continuing his job on the Hill. We’re both enjoying married life and I’m particularly excited to design our home!

The gorgeous blue and white affair by Paul Johnson Photography continues! From the linens and monogrammed pillows to the hydrangea-topped cake by Katie’s Cakes & Catering and potted plants, the color theme was carried out flawlessly. Amanda + Brent were absolute troopers and laughed through their first dance on their rain-soaked dance floor. After celebrating under the beautiful trees of The Southwood House, the couple made their getaway through garnet and gold pom-poms, a nod to Brent’s Alma Mater, Florida State University. The garnet and gold show up in Brent’s groom’s cake, too (a tradition Marissa taught us all about here!). In the South, we know school pride comes right behind family loyalty.

Describe your wedding flowers: My bouquet was all white tulips and my bridesmaids’ bouquets were white tulips and white irises. The mothers’ corsages were orchids. To add to the heirloom feel, we added a vintage-looking diamond earring around each one. We decorated the house in magnolias and hydrangeas. Inside the house, we used more hydrangea to create splashes of color on tables, the mantles and in the midst of the generational pictures. Instead of using vases, we used silver pitchers, coffee pots and Revere bowls to hold the hydrangea.For our center pieces we had either a silver candelabra or white flowers. We had different flowers on each dining table but each arrangement was white. Our design concept was to make it look like we went and cut fresh flowers from behind the plantation house. We had gladiolus, larkspur, tulips, irises, callas, hyacinth, lily siberia, and delphinium.
Describe your wedding cake: Our cake was a three-tier cream cheese pound cake with cream cheese icing. We had blue hydrangeas between each tier.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Brent’s favorite detail was the garnet and gold (for Florida State University) pom poms for the grand send off. My favorite detail was getting to spend the day with my bridesmaids upstairs in the Southwood house and watch the house transform into our wedding venue.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The photographer!! Paul Johnson photographers were even more amazing than I could have ever imagined.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our first dance. Since it rained 45 minutes before the wedding, the dance floor was soaked. When we started dancing, my dress absorbed the water and became more of a mop than a dress. It stuck to the floor and made it difficult to dance. Without skipping a beat, I picked up my dress and held it in one hand while Brent and I danced and laughed together.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? The officiant, my aunt, discussed that in the Book of Mark, the apostle tells us, “From the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and they shall be one flesh: so then they are no more two, but one flesh.” She then began to describe a custom in an area of the Netherlands that exemplifies this verse. After the wedding ceremony, the newlywed couple enters their house through a special door. The door is never used again until one passes on and the body is carried out through that same door. God designed marriage like that house. It has one door that is locked tightly. That lock, which keeps the marriage bond secure, is loving commitment for life, which includes a commitment to being reconciled if the relationship should falter.
