Wow. Do you see that first photo? We love Paul Johnson Photography for sharing this wedding with us! Amanda + Brent were married on the landing of the gorgeous antebellum plantation house, Southwood, which was decked in magnolia garlands and blue hydrangeas by Missy Gunnels Flowers. The men looked sharp with their big blue and white bow ties, the bridesmaids were lovely in Jim Hjelm, and the bride was elegant in her lace gown from Simply Elegant. In addition to being beautiful and timeless, A + B’s wedding was full of family ties. Amanda’s two aunts were both involved in the ceremony as an officiant and a flutist and Amanda walked down the aisle wearing her mother’s veil. My favorite part of the ceremony, though, was the ring warming. The wedding rings were passed through the guests to be blessed before they were slipped onto Amanda + Brent’s fingers. That’s a beautiful start to a Southern marriage, if I do say so myself.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. I met Brent in the summer of 2002 through my friend and Brent’s fraternity brother. At that time, I was a student at the University of South Florida in Tampa and Brent was attending FSU in Tallahassee. We saw each other whenever possible on weekends and during breaks, but the long distance became a strain on our relationship and we parted ways. But in May 2004, we decided to start dating again. Our final year at FSU, we were inseparable. Brent was going to move back to Destin after graduation and we decided that I would move there too, after I graduated in August. For two grueling years, Brent gave me the support I needed while attending graduate school at the University of West Florida but we also had time to have fun vacationing in Colorado, traveling to FSU football games, and enjoying Destin.
Describe the proposal. I was involved in the ring design so I knew when it was finished. Needless to say, surprising me was going to be difficult. One weekend in March of 2010, I went home to Tallahassee for the weekend. On my way back to Destin, I called Brent to let him know I was close to home. If anything was out of the ordinary, I would have known something was up, so Brent simply hid behind the closed door to our house, ring in hand, and waited for me to come in. As I entered, hands full and hound dogs howling, Brent popped the question.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Southern, heirloom, timeless
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding took place at an antebellum plantation home, Southwood. We included family and friends as much as possible. Brent’s grandmother addressed all of the invitations in a beautiful script font, both of my aunts were in the ceremony, I wore my mom’s veil, and we used my mom and dad’s 25th anniversary toasting flutes for the champagne toast. We also had a table of every wedding picture of our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents and during the ceremony, we had a ring warming where the wedding rings were passed throughout the audience and were blessed by each guest.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I shopped with my mom and my dress was the third one I tried on. Later, my dad came to Destin to see the dress and his jaw just dropped. However, my mom and I wanted to spend a weekend shopping in bigger cities just to make sure I saw all of my possibilities. As soon as I got back to Destin, I ordered my dress. I knew it was the one. I am glad I ordered it early because the first dress that arrived was sewn wrong. We had to send it back to be totally remade. I got my dress back three weeks before the wedding.

I’m kind of in love. It’s no secret around these parts that I’m all black-and-white, all the time. But if I were to add color to a wedding celebration, it would definitely, absolutely, no-questions-asked be a dark navy blue. (Livin’ on the edge, I know.) After I got past the initial WOW from Ashley’s bow-tied Priscilla of Boston gown, luxe Badgley Mischka heels and all-white blooms (courtesy of Tommy Murphy at Greenery Productions), I went a little crazy for the glam Vera Wang bridesmaid dresses. The bride gets extra points for so perfectly matching her bridesmaids to the gents in their Air Force dress blues. (The dramatic movie-star kiss at the end isn’t too shabby, either!) I do believe photographer Sara Kauss has made my day!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Judd and I both mostly grew up in Orlando, Florida. It was during a ninth grade summer P.E. class that we first became friends. After graduating high school, we both started our journey on the path we had chosen to two extremely different colleges. Judd attended the United States Air Force Academy, where during his four years he was able to follow his dream of becoming a military officer, while at the same time, play water polo at the collegiate level. I attended Florida State University, to follow my dreams of being a collegiate Cheerleader for the Noles, as well as go to school to become a teacher. Judd and I dated long distance for about 3 years and along the way we had to overcome things that most couples have never even gone through or could even imagine. We always told each other, that if we could make it through college and still have this strong of a relationship and love for one another, we can make it through anything!
Describe the proposal. (From the groom) After weeks of planning, the only thing that was really planned was where I was going to pop the question. That special place was going to be back in Utah, the very first place where we had our first date together, and where I taught her how to snowboard. So there we were… it was a cold and snowy December evening on the side of the mountain that overlooked the town of Park City, Utah. The moon was so bright it made the mountains look purple; the air was so cold it took your breath away, and the wind howled around us and blew the snow in every direction, there was not a soul around, and it was the perfect time for a proposal. As I started to crouch down into the snow, pull the ring out of my pocket and begin to ask the question, I think it hit Ashley, too. She knew me well; this was perfect for us. There were no plans, no speeches or cameras, surprise guests, or crowds of people to cheer for us, it was just us and the stars, which is all we needed that night.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Amazing, Extraordinary, Fun
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I graduated and cheered all four years at Florida State University where I graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education. The Escort cards were attached to bronze metal airplanes that doubled as pencil sharpeners. It combined our two careers since he is a pilot in the United States Air Force. We tried to make it both a winter and military wedding. Instead of having a guest book for people to sign, we used an 8ft wooden prop, ordered from asimplertime.com to support Judds career. We also used the military alphabet for our table numbers. All ushers were military; either air force or navy. Our ushers performed the traditional military saber ceremony for us as we entered the reception and guests, the bridal party, and the bride and groom were ushered into the reception to the theme from Top Gun.

Omigoodness. You are so right – the blue and that hint of silver, and her dress, and her shoes, and… I love it! Can’t wait to see more!!!

Beautiful location, and the dress blues….my boyfriend goes to the Naval Academy, but just exchanged for a semester at The Air Force Academy, so we were long distance this semester. Definitely can relate to overcoming things that most couples don’t before marriage, however, it’s so worth it, and I really cannot imagine my life without him. The wedding looks beautiful, beautiful dress, and love the ballet flats idea. God bless you both. Very well deserving couple.
