Born a northerner and the daughter of a Coast Guard captain, I usually think of seaside weddings and their nautical flag palettes as the province of New England nuptials. But that’s not quite right, because the South has miles and miles of coastline, and a boating culture all its own! Rachel Red Photography and Lindsay Bishop Events chose to embrace the bold colors and simple style of Charleston Harbor for this elopement inspiration shoot, and I must say, it’s a breath of fresh (salty sea) air.

A few words from Lindsay on the inspiration behind this shoot:

When they began planning their wedding, the two of them knew that they didn’t want a grand gathering; it just didn’t feel like them. Madeline and Chandler wanted to celebrate the beginning of their marriage surrounded with only the people that meant the most to them, in the place that they felt most at home. Eloping on a sailboat at sunset just felt right! The Schooner Pride was the perfect vessel for their nuptials. Modeled after an 18th century coastal trading schooner, the 84’ tall ship embodied all of the romantic, historic elements that Madeline loves so much about Charleston. They used signal flags to frame their quaint ceremony space, spelling “Forever” in the colorful emblems. With a color palette inspired by the signal flags they love so much, their distinctly nautical style was reflected in every detail. A beautifully textured blue and white striped linen adorned the main dining table, and weathered wood boards were paired with shining gold flatware to evoke feelings of an old ship. Soft Turkish towels made lovely accents for a number of food displays.

After the ceremony, their intimate group enjoyed an enormous farmer’s snack board filled with charcuterie and cheese, accompanied by savory shrimp salad boats and succulent pickled shrimp, paying homage to the low country’s abundance with tons of local ingredients. No Charleston party is complete without oysters, and Madeline and Chandler didn’t disappoint with a giant clam shell full of raw oysters paired with lemon slices and adorable mini bottles of Tabasco sauce!

When planning a wedding, it can be seriously temping to get so caught up in Pinterest boards and magazine pages that you forget the most meaningful source of inspiration: yourselves! Every couple and love story is so unique, and turning to your own history for wedding ideas pretty much guarantees that your celebration will be a lovely reflection of what matters most to you. Lauren and Michael did a fabulous job of this–from travel-inspired details (I love their table names!), to meaningful readings, to subtle nods to Lauren’s favorite Disney movies, they weren’t afraid to fill their wedding with personal touches at every turn. As a result, their wedding a great reflection of them, and they also remember their engagement as an especially fun time!

Thank you so much to Meredith Sledge for sending this pretty day our way!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I actually found it at the very first shop I went into. I was in Chesapeake, Virginia visiting my family and thought it would be the perfect time to begin my search, instead of having to coordinate with all of them to come up to DC. I had my squad with me: my mother, father, younger sister (my maid of honor), grandmother, older sister, and one of my nieces. They helped me pick out seven different dresses, each one so different than the next, and all within my budget. I tried on each one to tons of “oohs” and “ahhs,” but all of that stopped when I tired on the last dress. Everyone, including me, was silent. We all knew! My dress was the only A-line I tried on. I never thought I would go for a fuller dress, thinking I wanted something more form fitting. This Mikaella dress made me feel like I was floating on the wedding clouds. (Side note, after I got home from buying the dress, I was looking back through my Pinterest account and realized that I had pinned that exact same dress the month before!)

We had always wanted to do a first look so we could have a more private moment together and use that time to take more pictures. Having spoken with other friends who have gotten married, they shared either how great having a first look was in saving time, or how they regretted not doing a first look because they felt rushed to take all of the pictures right after the ceremony. Something important to Michael and I was attending our cocktail hour. Since we did a first look and took our portraits and the bridal party shots then, we only had to do family pictures after the ceremony, so we were able to attend 30 minutes of the cocktail hour. Our first look pictures are my favorite pictures of the day. Getting to have that special moment for just Michael and I was the sweetest.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Michael and I live in DC but I grew up in Southern VA and he in California. We were not tied to any spot in particular since everyone would have to travel to the wedding, no matter where we had it. That left us with tons of possibilities! We did venue research online and picked out five that were in our budget and looked like our style (although we were still trying to figure that out!)–two in DC, and three in Charlottesville, Virginia. We liked certain aspects of each venue, but didn’t have our “aha” moment until Mount Ida Farm. It was the last venue we visited, and while we were there, we were told they were also building a brand new venue. We drove over to look at the construction, and all that was up was the main barn and one chandelier, but we knew. I loved the view of the mountains, the Restoration Hardware feel of the rough cut wood and glass chandelier, and the grove area that was going to be the ceremony area. Two days later, we signed the venue and construction was finished in November 2015.

Before the ceremony, we played covers of Disney songs. I am a huge Disney fan and had to incorporate Disney somehow without it being too cheesy. It was perfect and all of the guests noticed. When I walked down the aisle, my brother played the electric ukulele and sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” That song was played the morning after Michael proposed when we were in Hawaii at breakfast by the beach. When we were thinking of what song to play at the wedding, that was the first one we both wanted. It was made even more special by having my brother play it.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Michael and I wrote our own vows and read an excerpt from a poem together. Some of our favorite lines from Michael’s vows were, “If the last six years have taught me anything, I know that even the next 60 won’t be enough to show you how much I love you.” From mine: “There is something about you, an energy, presence, laugh, or smile that is electric. That is what drew me to you and hasn’t let me go. I love that you can walk into any room, make a friend, or win people over with your sweet dimples and charm. I always think to myself, wow, he is mine.” There was also a reading Michael and I said to each other before our vows, “Everything that happens is nicer with you” by Sandol Stoddard.

How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? The best way we planned was through being open and honest with each other. We regularly discussed all aspects of our relationship and being married. This included all of our finances, expectations, dreams, ambitions, goals, etc. Even if those discussions were uncomfortable or hard to get through sometimes, we knew it was for the best and would get to a spot where we need to be, now and in the future.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We brewed our own beer that had special labels of us from Oktoberfest on it. We had a caricature artist on hand the whole evening to give our guests an even more special experience. Our guestbook was a painting of us from the Disney movie “UP,” where could sign a balloon. All of the wine and champagne we chose was from wineries we have visited in Napa and Sonoma. Instead of traditional table numbers, we named all of the tables after different countries, and the escort cards were tickets/passports to the guest’s destination (aka table). Any friend or family member could walk into the wedding and know it was ours.

Michael’s favorite dessert is pie. It doesn’t matter what type of pie, just as long as it is a pie! We had three different flavors (gooey butter, peach bourbon, and strawberry mint). We also had Georgetown mini cupcakes. Michael and I live across the river from Georgetown and always love to go to Georgetown Cupcakes. We worked with the company to design all of the fondant toppers and select four delicious flavors. For our wedding cake, we chose a simple white cake with etched-on gold. We also used a gold topper that said “You’re My Favorite,” since we say that to each other all of the time. It was simple, sweet, and delicious (honey lavender-flavored), and the sheet cake we served alongside it was champagne-flavored.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We both went to James Madison University during undergrad, but didn’t meet until our senior year. I led an alternative spring break trip, and the fall leading up to it, I got to meet my co-leader. We started to hang out and he began inviting his roommates along too. One of those roommates was Michael. During our second meeting, I became bold and gave him my number, and the rest is history.
Tell us all about the proposal! To celebrate completing our Master’s degrees, Michael and I went to Maui, Hawaii with the Lee family. On June 3, 2015, we took a flight over to Kona for a night and did a five-hour night snorkel adventure to see manta rays. We were on the first part of the snorkel, when the sun was still out, and after 30 minutes or so, we began to swim closer to the boat and coral. I saw what I thought was a piece of trash on the reef and thought, wow, someone littered! I kept swimming until Michael had to ask what it was. I went back over to check it out, and on the paper was one word: “Lauren.” We swam down and got the paper, and on the back, Michael had written a note asking me to marry him. Overtaken with joy, I began to giggle and shout OKAYYYYYYYY! When we got back onto the boat, Michael gave me the ring.
When did y’all get married? April 16, 2016
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 166
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The only point of any contention while planning was the guest list. We both come from large families and have a number of friends, and we wanted to include all of them. However, due to the venue size restrictions, not everyone could be included. Working on the list and narrowing it down was a huge headache and pain in the side!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? A great feature of our venue was that we could bring in our own alcohol. Instead of doing an open bar with our caterer, Michael and I selected and bought all of the wine, champagne, liquor, beer, and specialty cocktails. Not only did this save money, but we were able to select top shelf and the drinks that we enjoy. What bottles we had leftover (since we definitely over-bought), we were able to return to Total Wine and Costco for even more savings.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? We both loved wedding planning because we made decisions as a team. Drink plenty of wine and planning becomes even more fun! I would also say, don’t worry so much about hurting others’ feelings. I say this not in a selfish sense, but you will find you are more concerned about how others will feel or react than you are about your own feelings. There is a time and place to be focused on yourself, and this is one of them.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are looking forward to enjoying every day as husband and wife. We also can’t wait to continue to travel the world and see and experience new things!

I had to stop myself from saying “Amen” out loud while reading Casey and Jordan’s love story–while everyone’s story is different, I think we can all relate to these words in one way or another: “We have learned to embrace our imperfect story and understand that all of life is a process. Our relationship has seen brokenness, but it has taught us that the most beautiful things come out of that brokenness.” One of those beautiful things that came out of Casey and Jordan’s story was none other than the special day we’re sharing with y’all today! These two were married in a relaxed and joyful celebration that centered around the vows they wrote for one another, their families (love the story behind their maple syrup favors!), and the shared vision they had come up with for their dream celebration. A blank slate venue involved lots of coordination, but I’m sure you’ll agree that they pulled it off wonderfully!

Thank you so much to Flora + Fauna for sending Casey and Jordan’s day our way!

We met in college at a campus ministry event when we were both freshman. I was drawn to him immediately and thought he would be someone I would like to spend time with. We ended up reconnecting the next school year and dated for a few months before parting ways. We were only 19, after all, and not prepared to be in a serious relationship! We decided to give it another go a few years later. Jordan moved overseas to do a year of ministry and, while over there, ended the relationship. A few months after our break up, I moved to DC for my dream internship. Shortly into my time in there, I found myself sitting across a table from Jordan, shocked to be listening to him as he told me that he had moved to DC for an internship, in hopes to pursue me again. I needed time to figure out what I wanted, and Jordan waited patiently. It was a process for me of allowing my heart to trust Jordan again and become more peaceful, joyful, and in love. We have learned to embrace our imperfect story and understand that all of life is a process. Our relationship has seen brokenness, but it has taught us that the most beautiful things come out of that brokenness. Our story was better and more perfect than one we could have dreamed up, and we are better people for it.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. For whatever reason, I really don’t like most wedding dresses! I was really struggling with what I wanted to do because I knew I wouldn’t find something I liked at a traditional bridal boutique (and wasn’t into the prices either). My mom found the Dreamers & Lovers website and sent it to me, and I was immediately drawn to the laid back, boho feel of the dresses. Plus, the prices were more reasonable, as well. They have a home try-on option on their website, so I ordered two to try on, loved one of them, and that was it!

We decided to do a first look because Jordan wanted to be able to see me and have some alone time before we were with all of our friends and family. It was really special and worth it for us to have that time together. We also really wanted to be at the cocktail hour to maximize time spent with all our loved ones, so logistically, it made more sense to take all of the photos before the ceremony.

Describe your wedding flowers. I didn’t have a very specific vision for the bouquets–just a few general things I knew I liked. I wanted there to be lots of greens with not a ton of color. Our florist also suggested including herbs, which was an awesome and great-smelling idea. They turned out beautifully!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We read Isaiah 58:6-12 at the ceremony. Jordan read those verses to me when he proposed and they are our life verses that we want to live out together. Jordan’s dad also read a prayer that was read at his own wedding. Our favorite line is, “Grant to them, we pray You, a long, rich, and fruitful ministry in the service of Jesus Christ; and when their days on earth are done, and the sun is setting, may they then be found, then as now, hand in hand, still thanking God for each other. May they serve You joyfully and faithfully together until at last one shall lay each other in the arms of God.”

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did write our own vows, and we highly recommend it. My favorite line that Jordan wrote me was, “I will always seek to know your heart and understand your perspective with tenderness.” Jordan’s favorite line that I wrote was, “I promise to follow you, for where you go I will go and where you stay I will stay.”

We really wanted full creative freedom and a blank slate. The venue we decided on was cheap, totally hands off, and laid back. We could do whatever we wanted! Although it was much more work for us to plan and coordinate all of the vendors and details, from food and drinks to flatware and tables, it was worth it for us. The property itself was so beautiful with its Spanish moss and trees, so we decided to have the ceremony right outside of the reception venue.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographers were amazing. We had such a fun time with them and really cherish the photos and video from our wedding. Another meaningful detail we loved was our favors. Jordan’s family is from Ohio, so we got maple syrup from Richard’s Maple Syrup in Chardon, Ohio shipped down and gave it out in little glass bottles as wedding favors. About four months after our wedding, we visited his grandparents in Ohio and actually got to go to Richard’s and see it in person!

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? As a recovering people-pleaser, I know how hard and daunting it can be thinking about two families coming together and wanting everyone to be happy. Don’t be consumed by the temptation to make decisions solely based on other’s opinions or expectations. As much as you can, embrace the fact that someone will ALWAYS have an opinion on something–from etiquette to traditions, to things you should or shouldn’t do–and let it go! Don’t be afraid to execute your vision, even if others don’t understand it. You as a couple are going to look back on your wedding day and love everything about it, and that’s all that matters.

Tell us all about the proposal! From Jordan: I wanted to have a private engagement moment, so we went hiking in a local state park in St. Augustine on the intracoastal. I took my big camera and camera bag, but instead of accessories and extra lenses, I stuffed it full of wine and celebratory snacks, hoping she wouldn’t look in the bag! We ended up reading on a private beach. I was pretty worried about finding the perfect place to read, which only made sense to her later! After reading together for a while, I asked to read a letter I wrote to her on a typewriter I gave her as a Christmas gift. At first, she thought it was part of her Christmas present, but then she eventually realized it was more than that. I read the note and got down on one knee. She giggled for a while and finally said yes. It was a perfect place to sit and enjoy the moment, and we eventually went back to her parents’ house to celebrate with our families.
When did y’all get married? August 8, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 175
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our dessert was made by my incredibly talented and servant-hearted roommate, Megan Beaudin. I don’t really like cake and was floored when I found out how much wedding cake cost, so I knew it wouldn’t be worth it for us. My roommate at the time of our engagement is an amazing baker, so I talked to her about the idea of making all of the dessert for our wedding. For some crazy reason, she said yes (thankfully!). She tested out different recipes, I gave her some ideas, and we finally decided on the final list. Everything was so dang goooood!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: From Jordan: My favorite wedding detail was my dad reading a prayer over us that was read over my parents at their wedding. I also liked Casey’s dress. And her hair smelled really good. From Casey: My favorite wedding detail was Jordan surprising me by bringing a Polaroid camera to take photos of each other before we got married. It was such a great idea and special that we took them of each other.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We read a book together called “The Meaning of Marriage” by Tim Keller. We would get together and talk through chapters, or even read chapters out loud to each other. Having structured time was a great way to prepare for marriage. We also did premarital counseling, which was very helpful!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We wanted to be able to use our creative freedom and vision, but going that route provides its challenges. It was way more time consuming to have separate vendors for each individual part of our wedding, and we always felt like we didn’t have enough time. Being in graduate school and planning a wedding was hard! Also, neither of us are planners by nature, but are energized by ideas. We would have all of these ideas floating around, but actually taking the time to plan out the logistics was exhausting for us.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are moving to Alaska this summer and will be working as tour directors! We both have a permanent case of wanderlust and wanted to take some time to travel before we get jobs. We both just graduated with our master’s degrees and are thrilled to be taking a break to see new places. When we get back, we will both get jobs in our fields–Casey as a social worker and Jordan as an urban planner. And we’re pretty excited about that, too, because we love what we do. We look forward to following God’s call and trusting Him to lead our lives.
