Though our darling Lisa is out on maternity leave, I couldn’t help but give her a “hi, bye” call this week. In between my gushing of how beautiful her baby boy is we chatted about our shared love of the classics. You know: lace gowns, pale pink details, lush florals…basically, what we have here today, so I’m extra excited to share this beautiful wedding with you!

Ashley and Coleman knew exactly what kind of wedding they wanted: traditional and classic. But when it came to seeing each other at the ceremony versus a fist look, Ashley listened to her sweet beau and they opted to buck tradition for a few moments alone to calm their nerves. Though she might not have been on board at first, it ended up being her favorite part of their entire wedding! Let’s swoon over the whole day together, shall we?

Big SW hugs to Blue Ribbon Vendor Elisabeth Carol for sharing Ashley and Coleman’s wedding with us!

I had pictures of about five dresses saved, all of which looked pretty similar: soft, flowing ball gowns. I am a pretty indecisive person, so having decided on a style of dress was huge for me. I had always dreamed of wearing a ball gown at my wedding…until I started trying them on. They all looked really nice, but not one gave me “the feeling” I had always heard about. My stylist kept encouraging me to try a specific dress, from the moment I walked into the store, but I just kept saying, “No, that style isn’t me.” After trying on 20 dresses and feeling defeated, I gave in and tried on the dress. When I looked into the mirror and saw my mom holding back tears, I knew instantly that this was my dress!! Turns out, my stylist knew exactly what she was talking about!

I was very hesitant to do a first look–I wanted the church doors to open and for me to see my future husband standing there waiting for me to walk down the aisle, tears and all. I wanted the guests to feel what we were feeling–all of the emotions in that one moment. However, Coleman expressed to me that the first look was something he wanted to do and that it would mean a lot to him if we did one. For him to speak up about wanting something about the wedding was huge, so I knew this was important and I listened to him. I have to admit, it was my favorite part of our entire wedding. After all of the emotions and being apart the entire day leading up to the ceremony, having a moment to ourselves was exactly what we needed to calm our nerves.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We both knew exactly what we wanted for our wedding: traditional and classic. Our venues were our first choices and the only ones we went and looked at. We fell in love with them immediately and knew they were perfect for us.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We had a live painter at the wedding reception painting our first dance. Not only was it unique, but it provided great entertainment for the guests. The painting is now showcased in our new home, and will be a great keepsake for the rest of our lives.

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We were able to reuse the altar flowers at our reception–they would have been thrown out otherwise, and I couldn’t bring myself to let that happen. They were too pretty!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met while we were students at Texas A&M University. We both attended the 2010 Chilifest, a country concert right outside of College Station, and found each other in the crowd of 50,000 people. My friends and I were celebrating my birthday and stumbled upon Coleman’s fraternity’s tent. He knew just the way to get my attention: the entire tent sang the most memorable “Happy Birthday” to me. A few months later, we met again at a mutual friend’s lake house, only to realize we had more in common than country music. Our friendship grew for a couple of years until we knew we were meant to be more than friends.
Tell us all about the proposal! I had mentioned to Coleman that I had always wanted to go to Fredericksburg for a quick getaway, so Coleman devised a plan to pop the question in the Texas wine country. He rented a small bed and breakfast for the weekend and asked me to join him. After dinner the first night, Coleman asked me to go on a hike around the house. I agreed and changed into workout gear. However, Coleman stayed in his dinner clothes; while I thought it was odd, I brushed it off. When we reached the overlook, I immediately pulled out my phone to capture the scene. To my surprise, there was Coleman standing behind me, shaking and preparing to get down on one knee. I was so incredibly shocked and surprised, and I remember screaming “Wait, is this real?” The next day, we celebrated at Grape Creek Vineyards and came back to our B&B to find two bottles of champagne that were sent over by dear friends.

With Lisa on maternity leave snuggling the newest SW beau, I’m thrilled to be joining y’all here on the blog to share some beautiful wedding days with you, starting with Laura and Patrick’s Key West celebration! From opting to wear the veil her mother wore on her parents’ wedding day to tucking handwritten thank you notes into small bottles for each guest, Laura and Patrick took a day that is traditionally about celebrating a bride and groom and instead chose to cultivate the beginning of a life full of love by celebrating their families, their story, and what matters most to them. I hope you enjoy reliving their day as much as I did!

A big thanks to Erika Delgado for sharing Laura and Patrick’s day with us!

I knew I wanted a simple dress, without any lace or beading, that would complement my mom’s veil, which I planned on wearing. My mom’s veil was given to her by her grandmother for her and my dad’s wedding 40 years ago. The first day I decided to make appointments, I went with my mom and matron of honor. After trying on a few options that didn’t wow me, the consultant had an idea to have me try on a dress that came with a lace overlay, but to leave the overlay off. As soon as I put the dress on, I knew it was the one! I felt gorgeous in it–it was simple, classic, fit our venue, and most importantly, I could see myself marrying Patrick in it.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed meant a great deal to me: my grandfather’s dog tag from World War II. I tied the tag to lace ribbon and wrapped it around my bouquet. Even though he couldn’t be there in person, he was there with me as I took some of the most important steps of my life. Something old was my mom’s veil, which she wore on my parents’ wedding day. Something blue was the ribbon on my garter. Something new was two things: my wedding dress and my wedding day gift from Patrick.

Describe your wedding flowers. I knew from the moment I started planning that I wanted an all-white palette for the flowers, keeping it simple and classic. Because the reception was taking place in gardens, I didn’t want to compete with the beautiful landscape there. Our florist created a gorgeous mixture of white peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, and lisianthus. Instead of having large centerpieces, I preferred the look of many smaller arrangements mixed with oil lanterns and candles. I collected all of the glassware used for the florals throughout our engagement.

We met in Key West and experienced many memories throughout our relationship there, including our engagement. It made perfect sense to get married in the city where we fell in love. Both of us share a love of the ocean and the unique history and culture that Key West provides. When it came time to decide on a venue, we knew we wanted a location that held true to Key West. The lighthouse, being a beacon of safe refuge for sailors, coupled with Patrick’s time in the Coast Guard, made perfect sense. The large banyan tree next to the lighthouse provided a beautiful spot to say our vows. For the reception, we loved the the gardens of the Audubon House. The layout was unique and it felt like we were inviting friends and family to a backyard celebration in the heart of Key West. Between the ceremony and the reception, everyone boarded the Conch Tour Train to take in a little bit more of the island. The evening was finished off with dinner and (lots of) dancing the night away under the stars. All of our guests generously traveled to be with us, so we wanted to give them as much of a Key West experience as possible.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We decided not to do a first look on our wedding day. It was important to both of us that our eyes met for the first time in front of our loved ones, moments before we became husband and wife. When our eyes locked as I rounded the corner, all that mattered was each other. We will cherish that feeling forever.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Do what makes you and your significant other happy. People will have plenty of advice, but what worked for them may not work for you. Pick the things that matter the most to you, and that will make you happy. Do your research on vendors–choose ones who align with your style and understand the vision you have. When you you feel confident in your vendors, it makes the day run smoothly, and it allows you to relax and enjoy the day! Finally, throughout the planning process, it helps to think of the day from guests’ point of view. It is your wedding, but taking a little extra time to think about their experience will be greatly appreciated–they did travel just to be with you both on this big day!

In dreaming up our day, the inspiration all came from the sea. The colors came from the varying tones of Florida Keys water, from a muted light minty blue in the shallows to deeper blues where the ocean meets the sky. All of the place cards were pieces of driftwood collected by us in Puerto Rico while Patrick lived there. We love the idea of messages in a bottle. Throughout our engagement, we collected small bottles from antique stores. At the wedding, we rolled up a thank you note for each guest and placed them in the bottles. Attached was a tag with guests’ names that led them to their tables. Each table was named after a different Key we had memories in throughout the Florida Keys. In place of a guest book, we asked that our guests leave us a message and drop them into large old bottles.

Our wedding cake was from one of the best bakeries in Key West. We wanted something simple, yet delicious, and went with a three-tiered, all-white ruffled cake, topped with a gold conch shell to symbolize the Keys. Inside, the cake had two flavors: French vanilla layered with mousseline and fresh strawberries, and Key West rum with layers of chocolate ganache, mousseline, and fresh strawberries.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in Key West, Florida in January 2011. I had recently moved to the Keys and one of my best friends from college was in town for the weekend. We went for a night out in Key West, and she decided I had to meet her friend “just in case” I ever needed anything. Her friend was Patrick–they were childhood friends who grew up two streets apart, and he was stationed in Key West with the Coast Guard. Upon meeting Patrick, I was smitten, but never would have admitted it. Having just moved to a new town, I didn’t have much interest in getting into a relationship. I was stubborn, but Patrick’s persistence paid off, and two months later, we went on our first date.
Tell us all about the proposal! Patrick planned a date night in Key West at an amazing sushi restaurant. After dinner, he suggested we go for a walk down the pier next door. We got to the end of the empty pier, and while looking out over the water, we began talking about us and the changes our relationship was going to experience. Patrick was about to move to Puerto Rico for work, while I would continue living in the Keys. In the middle of this conversation, the words “I want to spend the rest of my life with you” came out of his mouth, while he spun me around and got down on one knee. After spilling his heart, he asked me to be his wife. I was completely surprised and, of course, said yes! After the fact, I learned that he had driven across the state to ask permission from my parents, had hidden friends taking photos of the proposal, and even coordinated with my boss to let me have the next day off of work.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The bridal party walked down the aisle to the instrumental version of “Skinny Love” by Birdy. My dad walked me down the aisle to the instrumental version of “All of Me” by John Legend. This song really stood out for the message it was sending to my future husband, and now, every time I hear it, it brings me back to that moment. After the ceremony, our song to walk back up the aisle was “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors. Patrick chose our first dance song. We were on a vacation together when we first heard “Hey Pretty Girl” by Kip Moore, and Patrick instantly said, “This is what we should dance our first dance to.” I loved that he was so excited about the song and that he wanted it for our big day. For my dance with my father, we chose a version of “My Little Girl,” sang by SoMo. The lyrics spoke true of the strong bond between a father and daughter, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room during the dance. Patrick and his mom danced to “The Baby” by Blake Shelton. This song has always been “their song,” so there was no question that it would be what they would dance to.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: How personal the wedding was, from the custom crest, to our dog’s silhouette on the drink stirrers. Every detail involved in our day had our personal touch on it.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We got married in the southernmost City in the United States! I carried one of my dad’s handkerchiefs–I’ve never seen him without one. I also had handkerchiefs embroidered for both sides of parents as gifts on the day-of.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We just bought our first house! We are looking forward to making the house a home, traveling, and eventually starting a family.

Wedding planing is filled with lots of decisions, and, of course, the occasional challenge. Despite a 17-hour time difference between them during their engagement, bridal party members who ended up being deployed overseas on their wedding date, and planning a move 2,500 miles across country, Amanda and Andrew prepared not only for their beautiful Lowcountry wedding, but also for a lifelong marriage. With a positive outlook and the help of their planner, Blue Ribbon Vendor Fox Events, they invited family and friends to The Mills House for a wedding day complete with old Southern charm and a so-very-special military sword arch exit.

Thanks to Aaron and Jillian for being on hand to capture all the magic!

Finding my perfect dress was quite a challenge. I had done so much research and tried on so many dresses that I had designed a mental image of what I considered to be my perfect dress. I even flew to New York with a few of my bridesmaids and we went to Kleinfeld for the “Say Yes to the Dress” experience, but I didn’t end up finding the one. When I got back to San Diego, I decided to revisit one of the first boutiques we went to, where they happened to be having a trunk show for Ysa Makino. I was going through all of the gowns with my consultant when I saw the train of one of them from across the room and immediately fell in love. I tried the dress on and found out that the designer was willing to create a completely custom look for me. We went over all of the details I had envisioned and came up with a sketch of my dress. I nervously waited for months while my dress was being constructed. When it finally arrived, I cried tears of joy! It was exactly what I had imagined, down to the last detail.

How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? There was a lot going on in our lives while we were planning our wedding. We went through the traditional premarital counseling with the Catholic Church in a very non-traditional manner. Andrew was stationed in Japan for a few months and I was able to fly overseas to meet with his chaplain, who really helped us to prepare for a lifelong marriage.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was the military sword arch. I love that we were able to include a tradition that is unique to military weddings. Six of our Marine friends lined up outside the church and raised their ceremonial swords into an arch. As we approached each pair, they would lower their swords to block our way and we would have to “kiss to pass.” At the final two members, I got a hefty swat on the backside. accompanied by a “Welcome to the Marine Corps!”

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? My father-in-law and I visited almost every reception venue in all of Charleston. When we got to Hibernian Hall, I immediately loved the old Southern charm. The exterior had a beautiful, classic, iron gate and colossal Greek-style columns. The interior had an amazing, grand staircase leading to a gorgeous ballroom. I saw so much potential with the space, I couldn’t wait to start planning a party!

The wedding florals were my favorite part! Our wedding planner was also our florist, and I cannot say enough good things about their work! We used a mixture of mostly white, peach, and blush, with a few green accents. The were a variety of flowers, including dahlias, garden roses, antique hydrangeas, peonies, and stock. The entire ballroom smelled incredible! The highlight was an amazing 24-foot floral runner on the head table.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding was in the heart of historic downtown Charleston, which is full of Southern charm. We had our ceremony at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist, originally constructed in 1821 and rebuilt in 1890. Our reception was at Hibernian Hall, a National Historic Landmark. The attire for our wedding was “Lowcountry elegant,” so our guests wore lots of seersucker suits and floral dresses.

Creating our cake was such a fun process. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted when we met with our baker, but she helped us come up with something perfect. We had four tiers–the bottom tier was covered in metallic gold beading and then the top three tiers were buttercream with gold foil lines. Each layer had blush garden rose accents.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Andrew and I met in Michigan in the fall of 2008 through mutual friends. We stayed in touch as friends over the next few years as Andrew entered pilot training with the Marine Corps. While he was stationed in Pensacola, Florida, he mentioned how nice the weather was and that he was going to the beach. Meanwhile, I was freezing my butt off in the Michigan winter, and jokingly asked him to take me with him. You can imagine my surprise when later that day, he called, offering to fly me to Florida for a week! Of course, I accepted! I have been following him around the country ever since.
Tell us all about the proposal! I was living in California and Andrew was living in South Carolina. He was about to leave for his first deployment, so I flew across the country for the send-off. We were walking along the waterfront, waiting for our dinner reservation, when he proposed! He deployed overseas three days later.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? No, we decided to keep it traditional. The first time we saw each other was as the doors to the church opened for me to walk down the aisle.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We were faced with quite a surprising amount of challenges while planning our wedding, the biggest being the 17-hour time difference between Andrew and I. We were also trying to simultaneously buy a house and arrange a move 2500 miles across the country. On top of that, one of our bridesmaids and one of our groomsmen were told that they would be deployed overseas on the date of the ceremony.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We were so happy to have the team at Fox Events with us for the entire process! They really helped us make sure that all of our bases were covered. I was especially glad to have them to bounce ideas off of when Andrew was not available.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? My recommendation for couples is to be present in the moment. All the planning is done and the day is here! Make sure to soak it all in and not worry if everything isn’t perfect. Everyone is there for you!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Next for us is the honeymoon! We had to take a few months in between the wedding and honeymoon due to time constraints with the military, but we are so happy to finally be able to relax as husband and wife. After that, we’ll be preparing for the next deployment.
