Chelsea + John met on Craig’s List. No really! That’s how John says they did, but with further reading, they actually met at a party thrown by Chelsea’s former roommate (whom she did find on Craig’s List!). I guess it’s a tomaydo/tomahdo thing! Either way you spin it, this adorable duo went from talking all night over tea to cheering for each other’s college football teams, to happily ever after — and that’s really all that matters. Throughout the photos from Brooke Images, you can see that this couple has a knack for focusing on what matters most. Chelsea said her favorite details of their wedding were “how we incorporated our family traditions.” What a great choice!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My favorite details of the wedding were how we incorporated our family traditions. We decided to make mini jars of my late grandmother’s granola recipe to use as wedding favors. The granola recipe was something she made all of the time while I was growing up and has become a staple in our family, so we really wanted to share that with our guests. Another tradition we incorporated was John’s family cheese straw recipe in our Welcome Bags. John’s parents made a huge batch before the wedding and then John and I stuffed them into little mini bags to include with the rest of the Welcome Bag gifts. We thought it was important to share these personal touches with our guests.

My mom flew up to Charlotte, NC (where I live) to come dress shopping with me. It was important to me to do the dress shopping trip alone with my mom since she and I are really close and she knows my taste the best. We planned two full days of dress shopping. On the first day, we went to three boutiques and found several dresses we both liked, but didn’t love. On the second day, we started the morning at Hayden Olivia Bridal. We knew from the moment we walked in the door that we would find my dress there, and we were right! My exact dress didn’t exist, but I was able to custom design it with the help of the boutique owner, Heather. We took the base body from one of the Modern Trousseau styes I liked the most and added the lace straps, back detail, and the train. It was absolutely my dream dress!

Tell us all about the proposal! (In John’s words) My plan to propose to Chelsea started about five months before the actual day. During Thanksgiving 2011, I spoke to my sister, brother-in-law, and my parents about the decision I was making. With help and advice from my mother and Chelsea’s close friend, Courtney, a setting was selected to accompany the family diamond from my Great Aunt Pernie. That was the easy part….trying to surprise Chelsea and keep the secret was the hardest part. Knowing that Chelsea’s birthday was soon approaching, I came up with a plan that would, hopefully, divert the surprise. Chelsea’s 30th birthday was in April, and we had planned to celebrate with a trip to Aruba. I knew this would be the perfect time to take advantage of not only a romantic setting, but also a perfect diversion. Chelsea’s father decided to come visit for St. Patricks Day, just before our trip. One morning during his visit, he and I took Cooper (our dog) for a walk. I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to ask him for permission to marry his daughter…and he approved!! The day of Chelsea’s birthday, April 12th, I planned a number of special activities. First was a relaxing morning on the beach, followed with champagne and birthday cake delivered to the room for Chelsea’s “birthday”. We spent the afternoon having couples massages in the spa before heading down to a romantic dinner for two on the beach at sunset. I was calm and collected as dinner was served but got a little anxious as dessert was ready to begin. I presented Chelsea with her “birthday” card and asked her to read it out loud. As she read through the card, she still had no idea what was about to happen. As the sun was setting and Chelsea finished reading her birthday card, I got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage…she excitedly said “YES!”

We did! When we were first trying to decide whether or not to do the first look, we discussed it with a friend of ours who had recently been married. She explained to us that on her wedding day, the first look was the only moment she and her husband got to spend together, alone, throughout the wedding day. When we looked at it that way, we realized it was more important for us to share this special moment together, alone, than it was to have the “surprise” walking down the aisle the first time. We were so glad we took her advice and decided to do the first look. Seeing John ahead of time completely calmed my nerves prior to the ceremony. We knew there was a possibility for rain later on in the wedding day, so I was a little tense in the afternoon, not sure if the weather was going to hold up for our outdoor ceremony. Seeing John before the ceremony helped calm my nerves and it really allowed me to relax. In the end, it DID end up raining so we were so happy we took all of our first look photos, otherwise, we wouldn’t have gotten a lot of outdoor photos together.

Describe your wedding flowers. Gorgeous! This was one of the areas where we splurged on the budget. Our floral designer really went over the top. My favorite flower is the peony and she coordinated that into all aspects of the wedding. My bridal bouquet was a bouquet of ivory/blush peonies. The centerpieces in the room had hydrangeas, peonies, stock and garden roses, all in ivory, peach and coral tones. The show stopper was the floral chandelier that our florist designed & hung in the center of the dance floor. It was a giant ball of the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen. All of the colors and textures were gorgeous together. When we saw it for the first time it took my breath away.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had two cakes: a wedding cake and a groom’s cake. The wedding cake was three tiers: Key Lime, Strawberry, & Creamsycle, all covered in buttercream frosting. The groom’s cake was a surprise for John that was made into a Clemson theme. It was actually a cupcake tower with chocolate peanut butter cupcakes and a red velvet topper.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. John likes to tell everyone we met from an ad on Craigslist, but that’s not the full story! In the summer of 2009, I was looking for a new roommate to move into the townhouse that I owned. I posted an ad on Craigslist and found my amazing roommate/friend, Carey. Soon after moving in, she and I decided to throw a party at the house to celebrate her birthday. Carey’s boyfriend at the time (now husband) came to the party and brought some of his work buddies with them, one of them being John. John and I hit it off, but at the end of the night went our separate ways. Over the next couple of months, we saw each other multiple times and became friends. Six months later, we met out to celebrate John’s birthday. Although I was coming down with a cold, I decided to go out and celebrate anyway. We were all hanging out at a friend’s house and John heard me continuously coughing from the other room. The next thing I knew, he was in the kitchen making me a cup of tea to soothe my throat. Instead of heading home early, I stayed at the house and he and I ended up drinking tea together and talking for hours. I knew at that moment I was falling for him. After that night we were inseparable!

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 82
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did. John and I thought it was important to make the ceremony unique to us and extremely personal, so we wrote our vows to each other. We each included (unknowingly) humorous parts about cheering for each other’s football teams (I am a huge FSU fan & his team is Clemson), but also included sentimental parts as well, with vows and promises to each other.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We wanted to make sure the songs we chose had meaning to us. The song we chose to be played by the violinist as I walked down the aisle was “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. We chose “Stuck like Glue” by Sugarland as the song the violinist played as we walked back down the aisle. We both love this song and it always makes us laugh when it comes on, so it was the perfect pick. John chose our first dance song, “Take Me There” by the Rascal Flatts. When John first chose it, I had never heard of it. He urged me to listen to the words and said it always reminded him of me when he heard it. I liked the idea of him choosing our first dance song and soon loved the song as much as he did. Another important song for us was the dance John did with his mother. John’s mom is a recent breast cancer survivor. When she was going through chemotherapy, John and his sister had bought his mom an iPod and uploaded inspirational songs for her to listen to as she got her treatment. One of the most memorable songs was “Live Like You Were Dying” by Tim McGraw. John chose this to surprise his mom for the Mother/Groom dance. The song represented how she lived life to the fullest and overcame cancer. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was a lace hankie John’s mom lent me that was John’s grandmothers. My something blues were my shoes and my clutch. My something old was the lace for my veil. We used the lace from my mom’s wedding dress to create the lace trim on my veil. This was very special to me and I am looking forward to passing my veil along in the family one day. My something new was my dress.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I would have to say the most Southern thing about our wedding was the setting. The venue where we had the ceremony and reception, Walker’s Landing, is located on the marsh in Amelia Island, FL. The venue is surrounded by large oak trees with Spanish moss hanging from them. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge, by far, was planning a destination wedding and coordinating all of the extra details from a distance. Having our wedding in Amelia Island and planning from Charlotte, NC made it difficult to schedule meetings with vendors. We would take weekend trips to drive the 5 1/2 hours and try to squeeze all of our meetings on a Saturday. It was a lot of schedules to coordinate & a lot of details to confirm in a short period of time.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? It would be hard to choose just one. We felt as though we truly assembled the “dream team” of vendors while planning our wedding. Each of our vendors were amazing and went above and beyond to make their part of the wedding perfect.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It’s hard to choose just one, but one of the most memorable moments was the end of the night when John and I got on stage with the band and sang with them. I just remember looking around the room at all of our close friends and family, who were singing and dancing, and feeling so blessed and loved in that moment.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Try not to let the planning stress get to you and just enjoy the process.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We bought a house together last year, four months after we got engaged, but didn’t really have time to work on it with the wedding planning. Now that the wedding is over, we are spending our weekends decorating it together and buying new furniture. We are enjoying being married and making our house into a home with our dog, Cooper.

Oh y’all are in for a real treat today! I’m such a fan of surprise weddings, and Abby + Sam hit the nail on the head with their engagement party turned big day! With the help of some fabulous vendors, like Abby’s good friend Meghan from M. Elizabeth Events, these two decided to switch their plans from a destination wedding in the Bahamas to a hometown wedding. The crazy part? They managed to change everything over in just three weeks! Holy cow! I also love how they chose to keep the coral motif as an ode to their original plans for a Bahamian big day!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Luckily for me, my friend Meghan Cease (M. Elizabeth and Events) is a wedding planner. She set up appointments for me at Ivory and White in Mountain Brook, AL. I fell in love with the delicate details of my dress. It was perfect!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did. After talking with Alisha, I felt like it was the best for us. I knew we would both be calmer after seeing each other. Portraits were really important to me, as well as being fully present at my reception. Seeing each other before made both of those possible.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Oh gosh! I don’t think we would have been able to do anything besides repeat the ones given to us! Even with the first look, we were nervous going through our “I do’s.” I love exactly how we did it.

Describe your wedding flowers. Lush. Vibrant. Romantic. We originally planned to get married at my family’s home in the Bahamas. Since the engagement party turned into a surprise wedding, we wanted to carry over the tropical details as much as possible.

We had personalized cocktails for Sam and I. He chose the “Old Fashioned”–a true Southern gent’s drink! I went with Alabama Sunshine–something fun and Southern at the same time! We had a local food truck serving dishes. I think that trend is really picking up in the South, and I love it! Our venue was a historical location in the heart of Alabama: the historical Shoal Creek Golf Community.

As y’all know, I’m a big fan of Southern oyster houses, so I bet this food truck was such a blast!!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I wanted something simple and sweet. We went with a plain white cake adorned by large fuchsia peonies. It was delicious!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Sam and I met through a mutual friend. I was dating someone casually at the time, but Sam stole my heart! We hung out together as friends at first, but things progressed quickly!
Tell us all about the proposal! I scheduled a couple’s session with our friend and photographer, Alisha Crossley. Sam and I wanted canvases in our home, but I wasn’t patient enough to wait until we were engaged. I knew we were getting closer to Sam popping the question, but I thought things were still a few months out. Unbeknownst to me, Sam had contacted Alisha on his own after I scheduled the session. I was completely ignorant to his plans since I actually set everything up! Toward the end of the session, Sam told me he wanted to spend his life with me. I laughed and said, “Well, you have to ask me first.” He slid down to one knee and pulled out my ring–the same diamond that has been in his family for years! I squealed as Alisha captured it all! We then walked to a nearby cafe, where he presented me with flowers and a chilled bottle of Dom Perignon. We called friends and family while lounging on the patio, drinking our champagne. We spent the evening celebrating with friends at one of our favorite restaurants, Satterfields.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Borrowed were my earrings, blue was a diamond bracelet with sapphires, old was a broach, new was a diamond bracelet Sam gave me as a wedding gift.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I was blessed in having some of my best friends surround me with their talents on my wedding day. Meghan as well as my friend Madi (hairstylist) worked to make everything perfect for me.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Well, since we decided to turn a destination wedding planned for October into a local wedding in May THREE weeks before the day, we had several challenges! Thankfully, we had a large engagement party planned with all of my favorite vendors, most of whom were scheduled to travel with us to the Bahamas. I had Meghan there to help coordinate everything, and the wedding was actually at her family’s home in the historical Shoal Creek community. She handled reorganizing everyone and getting people scheduled as needed. We kept the new plans a surprise so that our guests STILL thought they were attending an engagement party!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I was so excited to surprise everyone with the ceremony! I loved walking down the aisle freshly changed into my wedding gown and seeing everyone’s faces!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? I think it’s important not to get caught up in what everyone else is doing and to make the details personal. Having friends in the wedding industry, I knew what was “popular” and what everyone else was doing, but I wanted our day to truly be ours. I think we really made that happen!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Sam and I recently found out the we are expecting! We are excited about starting our own family and instilling the same Southern traditions that have given us both so much happiness growing up!

Happy Labor Day, y’all! One of my favorite things about weddings in the South is the complete sense of family. I think that’s why Candice + John’s lovely wedding pulls at my heart strings. It not only took place at Bannockburn, John’s family home, but was filled with details created or provided by their respective families. From the yummy deserts created by Candice’s mom, to her dad supplying vintage furniture from his own personal antique collection, these two were literally surrounded by love from their families! If anything could top that, I’d say it would be a surprise fireworks display from their parents to ensure the perfect ending to a sweet day.

Thanks to Olivia Griffin for sharing C + J’s wedding, and making me wish for a trip to SC!

We were at White on Daniel Island when my mom found the Jenny Packham dress. I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about the silk, but when I put it on, I fell in love with it. It is the perfect mixture of vintage and modern, and the back of the dress is amazing. Jody at White helped me customize the top and find a belt that made the dress even more beautiful. I love everything about my dress and I could not imagine wearing anything else!

I most definitely agree with Candice, the back of that dress is absolutely amazing!

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Jacqueline Volz of Sweetgrass Social Event and Design was amazing! She was a dream to work with throughout the wedding planning process. She worked so hard to make sure our wedding was exactly what John and I had envisioned. Our wedding ceremony was supposed to take place outside, and about half an hour before the ceremony, it started raining. Jacqueline quickly came up with a plan and executed it without a hitch. With Jacqueline there, I never panicked because I trusted that she would make it work. The ceremony was perfect and I have Jacqueline to thank for that.

While I’m sure an outdoor ceremony would have been lovely, their rain plan proved to be equally as lovely!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our favorite detail was the picturesque setting. The first time I visited John’s parents house, I thought it would be a beautiful place to have a wedding. The clear tent with the string bulb lights overlooking pond was breathtaking. The yard is full of trees and all the lanterns hanging looked beautiful under the full moon. My dad supplied vintage furniture from his personal antique collection that brought the whole look together. The Finesse band had everyone dancing all night. The atmosphere was exactly the way I imagined it would be and I loved it!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Everything had a touch of Southern style and tradition, especially the location and the food! Both the ceremony and reception were at Bannockburn, John’s family home. The house was built in 1910 and has been the location of a handful of family weddings. The reception was catered by Jack Brantley and he is a Southern as it gets. Our menu included quail and grits, pork tenderloin, crab cakes, and fried green tomatoes.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. My mom is a nurse, but makes wedding cakes on the side. Her cakes are delicious, so I was so excited to have her make my desserts. I am much more of a pie person, so I wanted to have a variety of desserts in addition to the traditional wedding cake. For the wedding cake, she made a three-tier vanilla cake with buttercream frosting. It was topped with flowers and was very simple, yet beautiful. We also had mini lemon meringue pies, chocolate chip cheesecake bites and mini red velvet cupcakes.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. I went to Clemson with a few of John’s friends from his home town. John went to the Citadel and visited Clemson frequently, but somehow, we never crossed paths in college. A year after college, we finally met through our mutual friends when I was living in Charleston about to start medical school and John was working in Charleston for the summer. We went on a date about a week after we met and we have been together ever since.
Tell us all about the proposal! John had planned to propose on a Sunday in December at his parents’ home in Florence, SC. We went to Florence for the weekend, and on Saturday night, John decided that he couldn’t wait until the next morning to propose like he had planned. We were sitting by the fire when he proposed. The next day, we celebrated with our friends and family at a brunch that John had planned.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided to not do a first look because seeing the look on the groom’s face when the bride walks down the aisle is my favorite part of a wedding. We didn’t want to ruin the moment by having John see me before the ceremony.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Colossians 3:12-17 and John 15:9-12
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The bridesmaids processional was Cannon in D by Pachelbel and my processional was Trumpet Voluntary by Clarke. The recessional was Hornpipe from Water Music by Handel. Our first dance was to “You are the Best Thing” by Ray Lamontagne. We chose this song because it was the first song we ever danced to.
Describe your wedding flowers. The bride and bridesmaid bouquets were a mixture of blush, ivory and white garden roses, peonies and hydrangeas. My flowers were wrapped in a white glove that John’s grandmother wore on her wedding day. The groom and groomsmen wore porcelina rose boutonnieres.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something old was a vintage bracelet I bought from Terrace Oaks Antiques in Charleston, SC. My something new was my Jimmy Choo wedding shoes that John’s mom and stepmom bought me as wedding present! I borrowed my bridesmaid Mollie’s wedding earrings for my something borrowed. My bridesmaid Betsy had my maiden initials and my wedding date monogrammed in blue on a piece of silk fabric that I had sewn into my wedding dress for my something blue.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? One of my favorite moments of the night was our exit. Our parents surprised us by having a fireworks show as we were leaving the reception. John and I were so shocked. It was the perfect way to end the night!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Someone told me a few days before our wedding “There is something about every wedding that makes it a little more unique, but we just don’t know what it is yet.” Inevitably, something will not goes as planned on your wedding day, but you have to just embrace it. And of course have a fabulous wedding planner to make it look like it was the plan all along!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We most excited about finally living together. John and I are looking forward to working on our house and enjoying our new life together!
