This week we were inspired by A Bryan Photo’s beautiful image of Miss Katharine in her getaway dress as well as this Jeff Clark bride’s stunning Angelina Jolie-ish red carpet-worthy earrings. So, we thought it would be quite fetching to bring a little style to your St. Patrick’s Day. Plus, we wouldn’t want you to get pinched, now would we?

Let’s start with your bridesmaids. Your maids’ frocks are the perfect place to add that pop of color to your wedding without going overboard. Green is a great color to add to your wedding day palette, since there are about as many shades of green as you can think of! From hunter to sage, when choosing the shade that’s right for your big day consider the season, the time of day you will be tying the knot as well as the hair and skin colors of your bridesmaids. Like a few of our brides below, consider choosing the color and then having your girls choose the style of their dress. This allows each to find the most comfortable and flattering dress for her body type. Believe me, they’ll thank you!

Onto the shoes! If you are looking for a way to add color to your own wardrobe, but love the look of classic white bridal attire and accessories, shoes are the perfect item to really go all out on! They can be hidden under a long gown or paired with a short dress like the teal peep toe Valentino’s below from Millie Holloman for a more modern look. Don’t worry, we’ve got some great shoes in our shopping guide that are a little more affordable, but equally as stylish. Come on, y’all — you know this bargain shopper wouldn’t leave you hanging!

And last, but certainly not least, we have the beaus! As you know, we‘ve got a sweet spot for bow ties and what better way to “tie” in your favorite color than with your groom’s accessories. Just like green shoes can add subtle color to your attire, let the gents in your wedding party join in on the fun with socks in coordinating green shades. Quick tip: by mixing in prints, like the Lane Dittoe groom below did with the baseball bat tie from Vineyard Vines, you can tone down the brightness of a certain color as well as create a cohesive blend of all your wedding colors.

As promised, below is our Shopping Guide filled with some of my favorites sure to make it a lot easier being green:

A. Marlon Garci Bow Tie ($13.99), B. Brooks Brothers Bold Stripes Bow Tie ($55), C. Pierrepont Hicks Southside Bow ($62), D. Danielle Stevens Multi Strand Necklace ($86.40 on sale!), E. Judith Ripka Two Toned Double Drop Pendant ($135 per week), F. Cocktail Bling CEC7 ($200), G. Kenneth Jay Lane Jade Link Necklace ($80), H. Angelina Jolie Inspired Emerald Earrings ($108), I. Cocktail Bling CB3 ($350), J. Emerald Studs ($89.99), K. Alex and Ani Rock Candy Bracelet ($118), L. AO3 Designs “The Knot” Clutch ($78), M. LulaKate “Zoe” ($285), N. Siri “Carmel Valley”, O. J. Readers, weigh in! What do you think about adding this bright and cheery color to your wedding palette? Are you incorporating your favorite color in your wedding, and if so, how? Will you or were you a green-shoed bride? Tell me about it in the comment section below!

I want to hear from you! Have a question for me or something you’d like me to discuss? Leave a comment below or send me an email.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, y’all!

I adore the green! It’s one of my wedding colors, so I am a little biased. :)

We’re incorporating lots of green from the floral arrangements to groomsmen bow ties. I think it would be fun to a piece of green jewelry for my bridesmaids, too. The shopping guide has given me lots of inspiration.

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Lori, I’m glad the Shopping Guide gave you some great ideas! I think a pop of green for your maids’ jewelry would look just fabulous! xo, Marissa

  2. avatar Courtney reply

Love the green! Ok, urgent question… The first bridesmaid picture, the dress on the far left with the twist and bow on the top.. Where can I get that??? I LOVE it!!! Thanks!

    • avatar Desiree reply

Courtney: Im pretty sure that’s an older J Crew dress, similar to this one on the website now:
      http://www.jcrew.com/wedding/Wedding_Bridesmaid/dresses/silktaffeta/PRDOVR~19961/19961.jsp

ALSO, Marissa…awesome job! green is such a beautiful color, winter spring summer or fall. You did such a good job showing it off in all seasons :)

    • avatar Marissa reply

Hi Courtney, I think Desiree is right, it looks very similar to an older version of the J. Crew dress she so kindly provided the link to. I also found a few similar options for you with that fabulous bow detail. Our fashion + style maven Marissa is back, and this week she’s tackling styles and accessories for short hair brides! Take it away, Marissa! — Emily

Thanks, Emily! (Doesn’t she give the best introductions?)

Let’s jump right in, y’all! Do you remember the Jennifer Aniston “Rachel” cut, the Nicole Richie bob, Victoria Beckham’s posh pageboy or the famed Farrah Fawcett feathered flip? Yep, I’ve had all of them! (OK, maybe not the Posh!) Haircuts help define our personal style. So, as opposed to showing you styles that might require growing one’s hair out, we thought it would be fun to focus on styles and accessories for those short-haired brides who plan to keep it cool on their wedding days (pun intended)!

Let’s start with the super short-haired beauties. With very short hair, it is sometimes hard to affix long veils, which is why I suggest opting for lightweight fascinators, ornate headbands or birdcage veils. If you’re looking for a more traditional look with a long veil like Jen Fariello’s gorgeous bride below, bobby pins can be your best friend. Spraying the hair with an inexpensive hairspray and then crisscrossing the pins over the top of the veil’s comb creates an anchor for a heavier veil to hold onto.

Image credits clockwise from top left: Gia Canali, Abby Rose Photo, Chudleigh Weddings via Style Me Pretty, Lauren McGynn, and Jen Fariello.

Oh, the bob, how I love thee! This chin-length cut always looks so polished and sophisticated to me. This haircut is great for brides with oval or heart-shaped faces. It’s also the perfect canvas for a bird cage veil or large flower. Hair at this length is easier to secure your favorite accessory to. Quick tip: placing the fascinator or base of the bird cage veil on the same side as your part can create a more balanced aesthetic than placing it on the opposite side. Also, don’t forget to add a generous amount of pomade or anti-frizz serum to tame flyaways.

Image credits clockwise from top left: Kim Ashford (see more of this darling wedding here), next two photos Lauren Larsen, Merge Weddings, Scott Piner (see more of this Southern beauty here + here) and Rebekah Westover.

And last, but certainly not least, is the long bob. This modified version of the traditional bob brushes right along your collar bone. It’s a long time celebrity favorite due to the versatility and universally flattering style. This cut can be curled for a more modern look, or blown out straight to create a soft face-frame. With its versatile length, the long bob can be pulled into a low updo near the nape of the neck for a dramatic stunner; another stylish option is to tease hair at the root and pin at the back of the head. (Didn’t I tell you bobby pins would be your best friend?) This will create a secure location to attach a longer or heavier veil like The Image is Found‘s glowing bride below. Quick tip: to avoid hair looking like it’s hot off the curling iron, have your stylist curl the hair from top to bottom without the clamp. This will create a looser, more natural curl.

What would a short hair inspiration post be without a few inspiring accessories? I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites below:

A. Candy Band B. LoBoheme “Claudine” ($130), C. Twigs & Honey Style No. 023 ($65), D. Ban.do Crystal Swirl Bobbi Pin ($130), E. Handle & Spout Five Flower Set ($65), F. B. Poetic Pretty Little Veil ($50), G. Untamed Petals “Eden” Flower Girl Halo ($48), H. Tessa Kim “Dawn” ($89), I. Twigs & Honey Whimsical Bridal Halo ($160), J. Twigs & Honey Tulle Sheer Birdcage Veil ($40), K. BHLDN Feathered Corsage Birdcage Veil ($300), L. Tessa Kim Tulle Birdcage Veil ($129), M. Emersonmade 3″ Wild Rose Clip ($42), N. Untamed Petals “Aurelia” ($115)

Until next time, here are few tips to remember: do your homework, bring in photos of what you want to your stylist, ask a ton of questions and get your final trim and color touch-up at least two weeks prior to your wedding. No matter how you plan on wearing your hair, be sure to go in for a trial and take a ton of photos to bring with you on your big day.

How about you? Will you be keeping it cool with a short style at your wedding? Will you be growing out your short locks for a glamorous updo? Let me know by leaving a comment in the section below. Either way, I know you’ll look beautiful!

I want to hear from you! Have an idea for a future column or a question for me? Leave a comment below or send me an email. I also enjoy random notes!

LOVE! I’m a mid-to-long-bob girl, and I was frantically googling yesterday for some wedding hairstyle inspiration. Thanks for the post.

  2. avatar Robyn Pigott reply

Gorgeous inspiration! It almost makes me want short hair. I love the birdcage veil and the bob. Though, I really just love birdcage veils in general.

I’d love to see a post just on hair accessories. Thanks for the post!

If anyone knows hair, it’s you Marissa! I’m totally sending this to all my 2011 brides with shorter hair.

Oh, how I wish Southern Weddings had been around when I got married and spent days scouring celebrity photos for short-to-medium hair updos.

i love love love this! growing your hair out for your wedding is craziness! i have a short bob, long in front short in back and heavy bangs straight across. it defines me and gives me a little edge. i will be wearing a custom desinged gown that is incredibly modern. at first i wanted my moms catherdral lenght veil but instead, we are having her veil made into a birdcage veil. it will so chic!

  8. avatar Sarah reply

Thank you!! I finally got the nerve up to get a super short cut, loved it, and then the proposal happened! Glad I don’t have to fret about growing it back in time- I still have cute options!

  9. avatar Lara reply

You are officially my stylist from now on. Seriously. This makes me want to cut my hair short!

  10. avatar Kimber reply

I have a variation of the Pob, and I’m planning on keeping it short. I’ve been scouring the internet for any short hair ideas, and all I could wind up with was ringlets…Seriously.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

This post has lifted my spirits!

    • avatar Adrienne reply

I just cut my hair short, now its a nice soft afro. I am wearing a birdcage veil.

  11. avatar Jess reply

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post. I have always envisioned long hair for my wedding, but cut 15 inches off for Locks of Love the day before my then-boyfriend proposed! We’re having a short 5-month engagement and, needless to say, I’m going to be a short-haired bride. It really bummed me out until I saw this. Brides can be so beautiful with their short hair styles! You’ve encouraged me to rock mine on the big day. Thanks so much.

Ladies and gents, please give a warm welcome to Marissa! She’ll be joining us about every three weeks to talk about fashion and style, and Southern fashion and style in particular. Marissa has a great eye and a knack for tracking things down, so if you have a question or a suggestion for a future topic, don’t hesitate to get in touch either by leaving a comment or shooting us an email! — Emily

Thanks for the great introduction, Emily! For those you that don’t know me, I’m Marissa! I’m new to the blog, but an old hand around SW. I’m a bit of a fashion addict with a healthy obsession with style — Southern style, especially! Classic wardrobe staples and vintage finds are a few of my particular favorites. I’ll be dropping in from time to time to give you a little fashion love!

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we thought it would be fun to kick off this feature with the color red! I’m going to show you some simple and stylish ways to add a splash of this bright and cheery color to your big day.

Let’s start with red lipstick. A long-time favorite of celebrities on the red carpet like Taylor Swift and Reese Witherspoon, red lipstick can actually make your smile appear brighter. Choosing a blue-based red balances out pink undertones and makes teeth appear whiter. If you’re red-shy, try a berry or wine hue for your big day.

Much like red lipstick, we’re seeing red nails make their way from the red carpet to wedding days more and more. Even our own KTW got in on the action at her recent nuptials by donning cherry-apple red polish (“I’m Not Really a Waitress” by OPI, for those of you who are wondering!). Also a fan of red, Katherine Heigl kept her make-up classic + clean, but glammed up her entire look with red nails at her winter wedding. Just a few tips: be sure to buy the same color that your manicurist uses to touch up unwanted chips, keep your nails short and square and remember the color in the bottle will appear a bit darker on your nails once the traditional two coats is applied and completely dry.

Now we’re on to the fun part, y’all…the shoes! Lots of brides are opting for pops of coordinating color to peek out from under the hem of their dress, but I think there’s just something especially exciting about red shoes! And since this feature is about Southern style, I couldn’t resist two very Southern shoe options – the wellie and the cowboy boot. Wellies are a fun and stylish option for rainy day weddings like the one below from Gregg Gibson. Ditching the heels for a pair of cowboy boots? Be sure to check out Katharine and Emily’s great round-up of boot options here. A couple tips for the road: be sure to bring any shoes you plan on wearing to your dress fittings to be sure the hem lies just so. Wear your wedding day shoes around your house with a pair of socks on under them, which will help to break the shoes in without blisters.

Looking for your own perfect pop of red? We’ve rounded up a few options below!

Okay, that’s more than a few options. We couldn’t help ourselves! Where to find these beauties:

A. Hunter Wellies ($125), B. Christian Louboutin Lady Bow ($735), C. RSVP Carol ($62.30), D. Salvatore Ferragamo Varina ($395), E. Carlos Santana Prestige ($71.96), F. Pour La Victoire Irina ($260), G. RSVP Larisa ($89), H. Kate Spade Darla ($298), I. GUESS Rapine ($90), J. Toms Wedge ($68.95), K. Unlisted Natural Glow ($59), L. MAXSTUDIO Sxishi ($128.95), M. BP Romantic ($69.95), N. BP Summer ($69.95), O. Badgley Mischka Randall ($200), P. Kate Spade Kamille ($325), Q. Via Spiga Marilla ($198), R. ban.do heart shoe clips ($25), S. RSVP Angelique ($95), T. Valentino Bow Thong Sandal ($295), U. Keds Champion Canvas ($35), V. Nina Electra ($92.95)

Lastly, I just couldn’t leave out these handsome beaus. Their burst-of-red ties works perfectly together with their subdued grey suits. So dapper, no?

I love the emphasis on red. It really makes the traditional “wedding white” pop.
