We talk often about our mission, including the importance of marriage and sweet Southern culture, and I must say, Julie and Will truly get it! Julie said her best advice for the newly-engaged is “to focus on your marriage more than your wedding!” Amen, sister! These two planned a day that was beautiful from the inside out. They wanted their guests to have the best time, and to see their love throughout the entire weekend. Southern hospitality doesn’t always have to come in the form of sweet tea or handwritten notes (though those are nice!)–one way Julie exuded Southern hospitality was by giving her maid of honor a special bouquet filled with peonies, since they were out of season during her own wedding. What a sweet gesture!

Tell us all about the proposal! Will popped the question with a surprise like no other. I, under the impression I was going home to Kentucky to spend the weekend with one of my best friends and attend a concert, flew to Kentucky from Atlanta. When I arrived, my friend took me to Lexington for the concert to meet her “friend” that had the tickets. Taking a shortcut through Lexington’s Triangle Park, I saw Will with a big smile on his face by the beautiful fountains, and I instantly knew. Will proposed, with a secret photographer capturing the moment, and I said “yes!” Will then took me back to his parent’s house for more surprises–an engagement party with some of our closest friends and family!

The flowers were one of my favorite things about our wedding! We chose a romantic, yet whimsical, theme for our flowers with lots of whites, creams, and hints of blush. Garlands flowed alongside an abundance of brass candlesticks on the dinner tables to provide the intimate, romantic look we were going for. A special bouquet was made for the matron of honor, who loves peonies, but wasn’t able to include them in her bouquet when she got married because they weren’t in season.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided to do a first look and I’m so glad we did! The day went by so quickly, so it was so nice to “steal” a moment for just the two of us! I also did a first look with my dad right before my first look with Will, and that was really neat and special too! I have such a wonderful relationship with my dad, and it was great to share a few special moments with him on that very special day!

We knew we wanted a smaller, more intimate wedding, and knew we wanted something that really represented our personalities. We wanted our guests to not only have the best time ever, but also to see pieces of us and our love all throughout the day and the entire weekend. We wanted it to exude Southern charm with a fun Kentucky twist, including a bluegrass band, a Lowcountry boil, and even bourbon barrels! Will is the biggest fan of golfing you’ll ever meet, so our venue included a beautiful plantation home on a golf course in South Carolina–it was absolutely perfect. We also really wanted to make things easy for our guests by having everything in one location, and Pine Lakes Country Club allowed us to have the ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing all in one perfect place!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. To honor Will’s grandfather, who had a bluegrass band in Kentucky before he passed away, we had a bluegrass band, The Blue Plantation Band, play before, during, and after our ceremony during the cocktail hour. We had them play some of our favorites, as well as some of Will’s grandfather’s favorites. They were even able to play a beautiful rendition of Canon in D as I walked down the aisle.

We had lots of great Southern details at our wedding. Dinner was a Lowcountry boil, and cocktail hour included pimento cheese, shrimp, and country ham biscuits. We did a two-step (after I changed into a short dress) for our first dance, and Will wore his grandfather’s cowboy boots! Our “guest book” was the top of a bourbon barrel that guests signed. The bluegrass band and cigar bar provided a lot of Southern charm as well!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We loved our location! Having everything (the ceremony, cocktail hour, and evening activities) in one location allowed us to spend a lot of time with our guests and soak up every moment–every laugh, smile, dance, and hug! We were overwhelmed by the joy of having all of the people we love the most in the world in one place to celebrate this wonderful exciting new chapter and journey!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It’s really hard to choose one moment because every moment was absolutely perfect! But, our two-step first dance in our cowboy boots, with guests singing and clapping along to Randy Travis’ “If I Didn’t Have You,” was the absolute best!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met at the University of Kentucky and we were acquaintances all through school. After undergrad, Will went on to law school at the University of Alabama, and I stayed in Lexington. After losing touch somewhat, Will asked me to meet for drinks while he was home from law school one spring break. We quickly realized that we felt something more than friendship, so we decided to try long distance while Will finished his last two years of law school. After two and a half years of driving back and forth, we decided to move to Atlanta after Will’s graduation.
When did y’all get married? May 17, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 135
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I was by myself when I found my dress at LaRaine’s Bridal in Atlanta, and instantly knew it was the one. I felt guilty for finding it without any of my friends or family there, but I hadn’t expected to find it so quickly! I called my mom and told her that I found it, and she told me to get it right away. She came down two weeks later with my sister, my future mother-in-law, and some of my closest friends, and they confirmed that it was, indeed, “the dress!”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had two very special readings: a compilation of Thomas Merton readings (which my friend created), and Ephesians 3:16-21.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our wedding cake was a simple, classic cake design, half of which was almond marzipan and half of which was chocolate raspberry. The cake topper was a family heirloom–the same topper used in my grandparents’ and parents’ weddings.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We did a lot of the decor ourselves–my parents made the neat wooden direction signs, we found all of the brass candle sticks at thrift stores, my mom made the flower girl crowns, and my mother-in-law made the ring pillow out of my grandmother’s wedding dress!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographer, Pasha Belman, was really where all of our wedding planning began! After a quick search of photographers in South Carolina, I knew I wanted him, and his photos led me to our venue, and our venue led us to our awesome wedding planner! All of the other details followed from there.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? My advice would be to focus on your marriage more than your wedding! It’s really easy to lose sight of what the wedding is all about, but the moment you do, you lose sight of everything. We really enjoyed our marriage counseling, and throughout the entire wedding planning process, we tried to keep things into perspective and remember what the celebration was all about.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We now live together in Atlanta, Georgia and are loving life as newlyweds. What I’m looking forward to most is just doing life with him every day forever! We are so grateful to have each other as partners in this crazy, beautiful adventure!

My husband is a summer baby through and through – he’d rather we just skipped right on over winter and moved straight back into the warmer months. Luckily for him, in the South, it does seem like our summer months stretch on and on, filled with bright blue skies, days at the beach, and sudden thunderstorms that send us running for cover. Sarah McKenzie and the ladies of Two Be Wed designed this wedding inspiration around the gorgeous blue tones of a Southern summer – just the thing to tide us over now that Labor Day has come and gone!

From Sarah McKenzie: Ashley of Two Be Wed and I collaborated with some amazing vendors for our Summer Blues inspired shoot for the Develop Retreat for Photographers. Summer Blues was inspired by the many shades of blue found in a Southern summer, from the ocean to the rain, from a bright sunny day to a dark moody thunderstorm. No color has quite the range of expression, from vibrant cobalt to deep indigo. We wanted to show its range by using different shades, patterns, and textures. Korie of the Weekend Type created it perfectly in the invitation suite and escort cards with a watercolor blue ombre. The palette provided a soothing ground for the warm floral tones to pop right off of – clean and classic whites with pops of orange mastered by Maxit Floral Design. Continuing the mixing of colors to our tablescape, a patterned napkin and individual ranunculus created a cozy and comforting invitation to the table. Our cake was minimal but soft and elegant, just like our bride and bridesmaids. An effortless Oscar De La Renta reminded us of soft cloud floating in a sky of jewel tones. This shoot captures the essence of an elegant Southern Summer Wedding.

When a couple with a passion for organic farming ties the knot, you just know their wedding is going to be full of homegrown goodness. Josie and Shawn used plenty of local, seasonal foods and flowers at their wedding, but they also took the cozy feeling of home one step further–their venue was a farm where they, and many of their guests, had attended grade school functions over the years. The sentimental location was a natural choice, and the fact that it was a farm was a perfect fit for Josie and Shawn!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes. We had a Quaker ceremony and we entered together. Since we both work outside and have been farmers for a long time, we don’t get dressed up very often. We thought it would be fun for everyone to see the whole look all at once as a surprise! We were so glad we did it–it was exciting!

We knew we wanted to be married outside on a farm. Quailhill Farm is very special, as it has always been a part of our school community. Elizabeth and Peter were extremely generous in inviting us to have our wedding there! Elizabeth is the librarian at the school we grew up attending together, and their daughters went to school with us. Fun school-related events were often held at their farm, so it was a special place for a lot of people who attended our wedding.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Yes, and one of our favorite phrases was, “I will accept you for exactly who you are.” We have practiced this in our six years of dating and will continue to through our marriage. We will work to accept and support each other even as we change over time.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding was all Maryland (yes, Maryland is technically the South)–the food and flowers were all grown, arranged, and prepared in Maryland! We were married on a working farm surrounded by mostly Marylanders, plus the occasional North Carolinian.

Our wedding flowers were gorgeous! Our friend Jackie from De La Tierra Gardens in Carroll County, Maryland grew and arranged them for us. We knew we wanted lots of texture, whites, greens, and little pops of color. She really blew us away. She used a beautiful mix of whites and greens with poppy pods, dusty miller, hydrangea, peonies, and so many other beautiful and seasonal flowers. They really made the tables special. Her dad even made the cedar boxes that the table arrangements were in!

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We made all the favors, place cards, signs, and other details for the day. We used hay bales that the farm already had for ceremony seating–we just had to help get them out of the barn and set them up! We decorated the ceremony with flowers in cheap metal bins from the hardware store and the caterer was able to provide cushions for the bales for a really low price per cushion. We only served beer and wine, and we were able to get a discount on both since we were working directly with the brewery and winery. Lastly, the dancing was going to go on for longer than the caterer was supposed to stay, so we had them put the beer and wine in a cooler and pack up on time so we didn’t get charged overtime for their staff! It worked out really well!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in middle school when we were 11 years old. We were good friends for all those years and went to separate colleges, but kept in touch on holidays back home in Maryland. After college, just before Shawn went into the Peace Corps (two and a half years in Morocco!), we started seeing a lot more of each other. We wrote a few letters back and forth the first year he was gone, and during the second year, we picked up the pace. I went to visit him for two weeks in May 2008 and we’ve been together ever since. Throughout our long-distance first year together, we sent a journal back and forth that we called “The Book,” where we wrote journal entries, letters, drew pictures, made collages, added photos and stickers–it was such a great way to stay close through all that time apart. When he returned, we apprenticed on a couple of organic farms together (spending as much time together as possible!) and we’ve both been in agriculture and farm education since then.
Tell us all about the proposal! We had recently moved and had been hoping for months to go on a camping trip. We finally got a date on the calendar to go for a hike in the mountains a few hours north. As we approached the peak, Shawn kept checking the map to make sure we were in the right place–which should have been a clue, since we usually just go with the flow! I kept saying, “I’m sure we’ll find it, we’ll just keep going up!” When we made it to the view he had in mind, we stood close to each other, side by side, just taking it in. He put his arm around me, held out the ring, and said, “What do you say we get married?” I saw the ring and my mind started racing–it was my grandmother’s engagement ring! How did he have it? When did he get it? That meant my parents knew! With my hands over my mouth, I looked up at him and said “WHAT??” He chuckled and went on to say so many nice things about me and us and how amazing it would be to get married after five years of dating and almost 20 years of friendship. We hugged, cried a little, jumped up and down, and I eventually remembered to actually SAY yes. After we bounced down the mountain on our way to celebrate, we signed out of the log book with the time and “We’re engaged!!”

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 150
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I knew the neckline and waistline I was looking for and found something affordable on Etsy! I had it fitted shortly after receiving it and I loved it!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? During a Quaker ceremony, there is a period of silence after the couple says their promises where guests can share messages. We asked our mothers to end the ceremony with a reading or message that they wanted to share. They were both so special and meaningful, and they both quoted Wendell Berry (one of our favorite authors)!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our first dance was to Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am.” Not only does this song speak to the part of our promises I mentioned before, but we also passed this song back and forth while Shawn was in Morocco, so it is a little bit nostalgic for us.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had pies made with seasonal fruits, strawberry rhubarb and blueberry crumb. There was also a chocolate pie for folks who don’t love fruit pies. They were delicious!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It was a beautiful day with a bright blue sky and a cool breeze. The most memorable moment of this perfect day was sitting down after we finished exchanging promises and rings during the ceremony, and we looked around to see all our friends and family surrounding us. It was so exciting and comforting to have everyone there.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We recently moved to Brooklyn and both have jobs working with urban farms and gardens. We are looking forward to settling into our new lives here, but we miss our family down South!
