Southern Weddings Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

Happy Friday! What are y’all up to this weekend? My sister is in North Carolina for a visit, so I’m looking forward to exploring some new places, eating lots of biscuits, and maybe giving her a few maid of honor tasks. :) We hope you’re all staying warm and making some fun plans for Valentine’s Day next week!

Amazing scenery and a cute-as-can-be couple makes for a seriously gorgeous engagement session–see more from this session by Amanda Watson on our Facebook page today!

Backyard weddings are all the more charming underneath a shade of Spanish moss. We were delighted to share this Savannah wedding by Brandon Lata on Southern Living’s The Daily South!

Our own lovely Marissa‘s birthday was this week, so we celebrated in a big way with her exciting announcement! We were also happy to share a few other fun features, including a giveaway–winner below!

We are tickled pink to introduce the newest member of the Southern Weddings family!

Kristin shared the eleventh (and final) hint in her Hints for a Happy Marriage series–it might be our favorite one.

We love our Blue Ribbon Vendors! Meet some of the newest additions here.

We hosted a giveaway for an adorable gift basket from Belle & Union. Congratulations to the winner, Jennie! Keep an eye out for an email today!

We loved this week’s dreamy real weddings!

Sarah Jane and Brad (above) said “I do” in the sand, followed by an intimate, joyful reception.

Dana and Jeben gave their guests a full Kentucky experience at their country-meets-city wedding.

Hannah and Graham filled their wedding with family heirlooms and foods that celebrated their home city.

Brittany and Joel held a front porch ceremony (y’all know we love that!) and a sweet backyard reception.

Have a lovely weekend!

One of the biggest delights of my job is getting to interact with our Blue Ribbon Vendors. They’re just such a neat group of people — passionate about their jobs, weddings, and marriages. We feel so lucky to have like-minded partners, and grateful that we can recommend them to y’all! A few of our newest favorites who have joined the Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory

Bustle is a luxury wedding gown consignment boutique in Birmingham specializing in designer, vintage and sample gowns. Meredith’s sweet Southern style and impeccable eye leave us with no doubt that the collection of gowns she pulls together will please the most discerning bride!

Carla White’s hair and makeup team is based in Greensboro, NC, and they specialize in making brides even more beautiful! We love her soft spot for the love stories of her couples, and know she’d be a kind, encouraging presence on your wedding morning.

Jeff and Jane Greenough’s years of experience don’t dim their excitement for each new couple they work with, and their fresh approach is apparent in their elegant, classic images. They are based in Charlottesville, VA.

Jennifer Pharr’s work is quiet and lovely. We love how she finds the beauty in each wedding day by capturing the intimate and tender moments! She is based in Spanish Fort, AL.

We love the way Jessica Rourke goes about her job — with the belief that she’s not just planning a wedding, she’s “marrying the stylistic and strategic details of the day that marks the beginning of a beautiful new adventure.” She is based in South Carolina.

Katie Nesbitt has a modern and fun style that will appeal to our delightful Virginia brides! Her infectious enthusiasm for life, love, and her clients shines through in her images.

There’s no shortage of gorgeous images in Michelle Boyd’s portfolio (so dreamy and full of beautiful smiles!), but we almost love her gorgeous heart more. You will love her sweet personality and devotion to capturing the love and legacy of your wedding! Michelle is based in Austin, TX.

Catherine’s work is clean and joyful. We love her belief that no one needs to feel rushed on their wedding day, and know a day spent with her would be calm and encouraging! MyLife Photography is based in Georgia.

It’s easy to see that Perry Vaile is a lover of life, and it shows in her images — whether intimate and sweet or joyful and exuberant, they capture the wide range of human emotion and record it beautifully for posterity. Perry is based in Raleigh, NC, but regularly shoots throughout NC, SC, and VA.

Aside from being one of the sweetest souls we’ve had the pleasure of working with, Kaitlin’s collection of vintage goodies is lovely and enviable. You will adore working with her to pick out the perfect pieces for your wedding! Simply Put Vintage Rentals is based in Raleigh, NC.

Take a peek at all of the talented folks in our Directory right here! Of course, we’re always happy to hear your recommendations for others who should be added – just email Emily!

Who says you can’t eat ice cream for dinner?

Or stop and have a random dance party while making supper?

Not I! Pet names, tickles fights, and goofy sing-alongs are also encouraged in my world. After all, one of the biggest privileges of adulthood is the ability to tiptoe back to childhood at the drop of a hat. Life as a grown-up can get serious, and sometimes a jump back into the joy and simplicity of youth is just what the doctor ordered. Y’all, I think I saved the best hint for last. Think of this as the cherry on top of the “helpful hints sundae” — it’s time to Be Silly.

Be silly” essentially means be yourself without worrying about what others might think — because at our core, we’re all a little silly, right? Let your hair down and have a little fun! While I don’t have pipes like Carrie or Mariah, I don’t hesitate to belt out a power ballad while cleaning the house or making supper. My husband, meanwhile, seems pretty quiet and reserved, but don’t let that fool you — he has his own knack for making up silly songs and singing them to me on road trips or while folding the laundry.

I love laughing with Kyle. I love making a batch of cookies at 10 o’clock just because we can. I love going on mini adventures. As children, this might have looked like creek stomping in the backyard. As adults, it might mean a day trip to an area mountain trail for a hike. Being silly isn’t really about being funny, though I guarantee at some point you’ll probably be breathless from laughing. No, it’s about being transparent and vulnerable with your spouse. The day-to-day expectations of life can be exhausting. I think it is important to be intentional about making sure that things don’t tip too far on the serious scale, and that you’re never too caught up in the go-go-go of life to take a little detour down the trail of spontaneity. Surprise each other!

So the next time it rains, consider whether it’s the perfect time to go jump in some mud puddles. Or maybe it’s the perfect night to put away the chicken, pull out the Blue Bell and have sundaes for supper. Or to crank up the tunes and have a karaoke sing-off as you clean the table.

This playfulness doesn’t have to just happen behind closed doors. Go play miniature golf instead of your standard dinner and movie date night. Explore the toy aisle at Target, pick out your favorite board game, and invite some friends over to play. Take a cue from The Bachelor (Emily, Lisa, and I are all huge fans) and go fly a kite.

I’d love to hear: What other ways do you have fun and be silly with your significant other? Share them below!

For now, we’ve reached the end of my hints for a happy marriage. I hope that y’all have enjoyed this as much as we have (yes, we – because my dear husband was consulted on each and every post, since I was sharing hints from our very own marriage). Kyle and I are by no means perfect, but we do think that there is value in protecting and cultivating our marriage and having a little fun while doing so. We laugh, we go on dates, we take vacations and we fight (fair). We talk, we try to be present and create space, and we share meals and perspective. And we care – a lot.

These hints are not a one-size fits all proposition, but a gentle reminder that after your big day, there is work still to do: after all, good, strong marriages can change the world!

Sweet engagement session by Blue Ribbon Vendor Graham Terhune — see the rest in Facebook Friday!
