Social Southern Weddings

Hey, howdy, and happy Friday, y’all! We just wanted to take a sec to do a quick rundown of the spots where you can find Southern goodness besides this here blog. (Though we have lots of long-term readers, there are always new Southern brides coming up through the ranks!)

First, there’s Twitter. We have one main account (@iloveswmag), where we share recent blog posts, happenings in the office, behind-the-scenes deets on shoot days, industry discounts and sample sales, news about Southern friends and events, and much more. All the SW ladies have their own accounts, too. So if you like business + branding, follow Lara, or if paper pretties and mini food are more your thing, follow Emily! (Or both, of course!) Nicole’s here, Sierra’s here, Marissa’s here, and Whitney, of course, is here.

Next, there’s Facebook. You may all feel free to like us here :) We share much of the same insider news and details that we do on Twitter, but it’s fun to see the conversations develop on FB. Plus, we sometimes ask fun polls on our Facebook page, and love hearing what y’all have to say!

Lastly, there’s Pinterest! You can follow Southern Weddings here. We love to pin photos from blog and print features, and it’s great for y’all, too, because we sort photos into different, fun categories. So if you’re looking for sweet tea + other drinks, biscuits + other delectables, or bow ties + boutonnieres, we’ve got you covered. We also have boards for ceremonies, fashion + style, bouquets, sweets, Southern traditions… you name it. And of course, each color has its own board, too. Get pinning!

And while you’re there, feel free to follow each individual account, too: Lara, Emily, Marissa, Whitney, Sierra, and Nicole. (If you need a Pinterest invite, just let us know!)

And there you have it! Besides spreading Southern goodness far and wide, you know what we love most about these social media platforms? They help us get to know our lovely brides better! So join, like, tweet, and pin — we’ll be right there alongside you!

Since escort cards were our first Ultimate Southern Challenge, we weren’t really sure what sort of a response we’d get — but heavens to Betsy, y’all blew it out of the water! We were so impressed with the creative, crafty, and OH so Southern entries we received. However, that did make it difficult to pick a winner. But, using a combination of reader votes and Southern Weddings editor opinions, we have come to a decision.

Congratulations to Honey Bee Invites! Delivering not one, but TWO adorable concepts, plus garnering tons of reader support, we are happy to crown these ladies our first Ultimate Southern Challenge champions. Make sure you take another look at their fabulous escort card ideas here and here, and the rest of their work on their site and blog!

Kudos also to our runners-up, Southern Fried Paper and Beeology101. Check out their terrific projects here and here!

And lastly, one more congratulations to ALL of our finalists — Emily Steffen, Daisies & Pearls + Meredith Perdue, Cyn Kain + Erin McLean, and Allison Barnhill Designs. We had tons of ideas sent in, so we hope you consider it an honor to be chosen as a finalist, because we certainly do!

Thank you again to all who participated! And stay tuned, because the next Ultimate Southern Challenge will be posted next week!! Suggestions for future challenges are welcomed below :)

i wish there was a way to display all the entries–i am desperate for all kinds of inspiration on escort cards and the finalist entries didn’t send me at all

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Sara! I’m sorry to hear the finalist entries weren’t perfect for you! We chose the most inspiring options from the entries sent in, but can understand it’s hard to please everyone. I hope you find inspiration in our real weddings as well as future Ultimate Southern Challenges!

sara: Hi Sara! My best advice for a bride such as yourself is to think about what you and your fiance love the most – what is one that that makes either of you smile – everytime you see it, eat it, touch it, etc. Do you LOVE dum-dum lollipops? put someones name and a table number on it, stick a bunch of them in some decorated foam board from your local craftstore (ABC order!) and BAM! you have a super cute escort card display! Does the movie Dumb & Dumber make you laugh everytime its on? Print out wallet sized photos of Lloyd & Harry, print out “word or thought bubbles” with the guests names and table #s on them…and glue those to the photos (hint: u dont have to stay in the lines!), and close pin all the photos on a line or pin them onto a cork board and BAM! hilarious cocktail hour humor and escort card display. ….for some reason Im playing off the words “dum, dumb, and dumber” here but I mean no harm…Im just in a silly mood.

You can make escort cards out of any ol’ thang!!! If you need some more ideas – feel free to email me at [email protected] . I’d be happy to help! :) HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh wow. So many adorable details! Kristen + Chad charmed their guests with rustic and Southern elements throughout their reception. Burlap made an appearance in their banner, guestbook and tables, while gingham dressed up favors, signs and mason jars. The newlyweds were delighted with the surprise wishing well set up for them by Historic Cedarwood, a sweet nod to their engagement (read about it in Part I). We love the sentimentality and the Southern inclusions like the quilt-lined red pickup, the wicker basket-adorned tandem bike, and the fabric touches. It makes us feel right at home and ridiculously happy for this so-in-love couple. Thanks again to Landon Jacob for sharing!

Describe your wedding cake: Our cake was so delicious! It was seriously the best cake I have ever tasted! I am not big on cake and icing, but I could eat this cake everyday! It was so moist and full of flavor.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Mason jars – they were everywhere! I have become obsessed with them over the last year and I knew that I wanted them everywhere, with flowers and candles, used in the sand ceremony, and to drink out of (this is the South and sweet tea belongs in a mason jar!). Our gifts to our guests was mason jars filled with lemon drops, draped with a piece of gingham, and tied off with jute and a thank you tag. I also knew that I wanted gingham and burlap everywhere. The gingham gave the wedding such a fun and comfortable feeling and the burlap gave a very country-chic feel to everything. The bridesmaids’ bouquets all had burlap and gingham wrapped around them. My sister and I had pieces of lace from our mother’s wedding veil wrapped around our bouquets, which is very special to us. The venue was already complete with Southern charm. The ceremony took place by a big red barn with an old Ford truck sitting off to the side. I had to incorporate my cowgirl boots into a few pictures because I love them and they were my mother’s boots when she was younger and rode horses.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The venue! Cedarwood is an all inclusive wedding package! They took care of everything and made it such a wonderful day. I was never stressed about the wedding, wondering if things would get done or not. I always felt so comfortable about Cedarwood and I knew from their blogs and previous weddings that I would love what they did with mine. We are also happy that we spent extra on our catering. Chad and I wanted everyone to have fun, relax, and remember the night! We wanted food that we loved, so we chose a mix of gourmet hamburgers, chicken quesadillas, pulled chicken and pulled pork. We also had fruit, cheeses, chips and variety of dips. We had so many compliments on the food… it was delicious!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our first look at each other! I was waiting in the bride’s room ready to go and getting so nervous. Right before I went out to meet Chad, I was handed a sweet card that he wrote! I followed the photographer out to the red barn that we love so much. They had me wait on one side and walk up to see Chad… I was standing there just knowing he was on the other side and I felt like a little girl with a crush. I had butterflies and could not stop smiling. The emotions and looks that we gave each other will always be something we remember from that day! It was such a sweet moment that we will forever cherish.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We have moved to North Carolina and are away from our families, which is hard but also an exciting step for us to be somewhere new together and grow as husband and wife. We are looking forward to spending time together, traveling, laughing a lot, and being happy. We both want to get in a good place with our careers and hope to someday raise a family. For now, our sweet dog Denver is our child and she is so spoiled.
