As someone who met my own soon-to-be husband while studying abroad in Austria, I feel a little bit like kindred spirits with Katie and Rob. They met on the airplane en route to their study abroad program and spent the first few magical months of their relationship traveling and exploring around Western Europe! Six years later, they chose their venue, the gorgeous Summerour Studio in Atlanta, because it reminded them a little bit of Florence, where they had shared their first kiss. I love the way they brought lots of Southern touches, in honor of their Georgia hometowns, to this European-style venue!

Thank you so much to Laura Leslie for sharing this beautiful wedding with us!

Rob and I grew up 12 miles from each other and went to Georgia Tech for two years together before we finally met on a flight to Europe for a study abroad trip during the summer of 2007. He gave me the middle seat so that I could sit next to a friend, and I gave him my dessert. We spent the rest of the summer traveling around Western Europe together and had our first kiss in Florence. We spent the next two years dating back in Atlanta. When Rob graduated, he moved to Texas while I finished my last year of school. When I graduated, I got a job in New York, and shortly after I moved, Rob moved back to Atlanta. We spent the next year traveling up and down the East Coast to see each other. In the summer of 2010, we both packed up our apartments and drove across the country to move into our new apartment on a palm tree-lined street in Los Angeles. That December, Rob popped the question and we moved back to Atlanta together the next summer. We got married almost six years after the day we met.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Summerour Studio is not a typical Southern venue—in fact, it’s a little European, with a terracotta roof and a charming cobblestone courtyard that has grape vines crawling up the front of the studio. We loved that it reminded us of Florence, where we had our first kiss. It also has a beautiful, open, rustic interior with dark wood floors and factory windows.

We recited traditional vows, but we also asked each of our aunts to read two of our favorite poems: Pablo Neruda’s Sonnets LXIX and XVII. Like a vow, I think we will always remember lines from those poems. “So I love you because I know no other way than this: where I does not exist, nor you, so close that your hand on my chest is my hand, so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.” On the morning of our wedding, Rob surprised me with a necklace that had this line engraved on it: “through love I will be, you will be, we’ll be.”

Describe your wedding flowers. We worked with Erica Loesing, who was part of the Amy Osaba team, on the design for our wedding. She put together the most beautiful arrangements on each table using a mixture of bronze, glass, and milky white vessels, white, peach, pink, and light yellow peonies, garden roses, ranunculus, and tulips, and beautiful greenery, like flowing vines and bunches of wonderful-smelling herbs, like mint.

Since Rob and I fell in love traveling around the world and then spent a good part of the next five years moving around, we used vintage postcards from all the cities we had visited as our seating cards. Then, at their tables, guests wrote us a note—a memory, wish, or piece of advice—on the postcard. We put all the postcards in an album as our guest book.

Tell us all about the proposal! From Rob: I decided that proposing during one of our runs at Griffith Park near our house, where there’s a trail you can see the whole city from, would be perfect. As part of the celebration, I also bought tickets to a show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall for that evening. The concert hall had always been a special place to us in the city. The week I was going to propose, I told Katie I had a surprise for her that weekend. Later in the week, I suggested we go for a long run in Griffith Park in the morning, since I knew she thought the surprise was coming later. The morning of the proposal, Katie said she couldn’t go running if she was going to wrap up work before the big surprise. I tried to convince her, but didn’t want her to get suspicious. Instead, when we got to the Concert Hall, we found a place to sit down–just the two of us–and I asked her right there. I couldn’t wait another minute.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I thought I wanted something very straight and simple. I tried on so many “almost” dresses, but we went to an appointment at Bride Beautiful to see if we could find anything we liked better. The only dress I tried on there ended up being the one! It was completely different than what I had been imagining, but I fell in love with the beautiful layering and detail. We worked with the amazing Gizzelle James to alter it perfectly!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Rob and I don’t love cake, but we do love ice cream! Instead of serving cake, the Honeysuckle Gelato truck parked outside and served little cups of gelato all night! We worked with the Honeysuckle team to pick our favorites from their extensive menu of Southern-inspired flavors. We chose bourbon pecan, sea salt caramel, and blueberry cheesecake with graham cracker.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We knew Summerour would be the perfect place for us to layer the Southern details and traditions that mean the most to us. The food, gelato, and cocktails were all Southern—one station served shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes, biscuits, and a pimento cheese spread. We had bourbon pecan gelato and a peach sorbet. One of our cocktails was a “Southern Old Fashioned” with peach bitters. All of the details on the tables felt so soft and Southern, especially the bowls of fresh seasonal produce–peaches, crabapples, and kumquats.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our most memorable moment of the wedding was something few guests probably even noticed. Instead of walking down the aisle to a traditional song, we chose “Stranger Things” by Local Natives. We first saw Local Natives, our favorite band, at a special show where they performed with the symphony at Disney Concert Hall, which is why that venue has always been so special to us. The opening of the song is beautiful, and to this day, whenever I hear it, I get chills as I remember exactly how I felt when I took those first steps toward Rob.

I can’t even find a way to start this post other than with the good ol’ Southern contraction – y’all! Seriously…y’all. Caitlan and BJ’s wedding stole my heart right from the very beginning. These two met through mutual friends and had a self-proclaimed “whirlwind romance,” FaceTiming until their phones died while dating long distance. On their wedding day, jeans and t-shirt-wearing Caitlan donned a gorgeous blush sequined gown from BHDLN that literally took BJ’s breath away. As he said himself, “For as long as I can remember, I have always wondered what it would feel like to have your breath taken away. The moment that Caitlan came into view, that feeling was realized. To watch her clasp onto her father’s arm, trying her hardest to force a smile through her tears of joy (hopefully joy) was the single greatest moment, of not only that day, but of my life.” Are you kidding me? While that’s a bit longer of a quote than we normally include in an introduction, when Lisa and I read it, we both bawled our eyes out, and knew we HAD to share it with y’all. Three words: Love never fails. Now wipe your tears because you don’t want to miss this amazingly sweet day!

Thanks for sharing, Jen Dillender— you know the way to our hearts!

I adore Caitlan’s ridiculously chic, but somehow, completely laid-back look!

Frankly, I prefer jeans and a t-shirt over dressing up any day, so wedding dress shopping was the part of the planning process that I dreaded the most. I went into shopping knowing I wanted something plain with straps, and I HAD to go check out BHLDN. I made my appointment with one dress in mind, totally thinking it was going to be the one. I brought along my brutally honest mother and sister to help with the process. I tried on four dresses total, and the second dress ended up being the one–it’s a rare moment in which all three of us agree on something. The other dresses, including the one I had had my eye on, paled in comparison to the dress I chose. I left with a strapless, blush dress covered in sequins. I advise all brides to go into dress shopping with an open mind. You may surprise yourself!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I’m a born and raised Texas girl while BJ is a Nashvillian by way of Oklahoma. We first decided that the wedding would be in Texas–there is nothing more beautiful than the Texas Hill Country, so I knew that was the backdrop I wanted. I had previously attended a wedding out at Camp Lucy, so it was an easy choice. They were just about to open a second venue (Sacred Oaks), and it had us at the mere sight of the oak trees that hung over the ceremony site. We knew that was where we wanted to say our vows.

From Caitlan: Obviously, the moment I locked eyes with BJ was an unforgettable moment, but there was something about the moments leading up to that as I was standing arm-in-arm with my father. Aside from becoming BJ’s wife, walking down the aisle with my dad was my proudest moment. It was fitting to show my guests the man behind the woman I am today, as well as the man who set the bar incredibly high. It was an emotional walk down the aisle, and certainly something that I’ll never forget.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? This was the one battle my sweet husband lost during the wedding planning process. He has a way with words, while I tend to stumble over mine. Thankfully, our officiant (BJ’s best friend) came to our rescue with a heartfelt tribute to us, our love, and our future. It couldn’t have been more perfect and ended up being the highlight of the night to many of our guests. Well done, Trey!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Who needs readings when you have two of your bridesmaids singing? Two of my best friends busted out the guitar and their vocal chords for a pitch-perfect rendition of “Fire and Dynamite” by Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. It added a beautiful and personal touch to our ceremony.

Describe your wedding flowers. I wanted the overall look of the flowers to be very natural and a little messy with lots of green. The in-house floral department at Camp Lucy did a great job incorporating lots of green by using nonconventional greens, including brussel sprouts, cabbage, and kale. The groomsmen donned my favorite craspedia, which tied in perfectly with the bridal bouquet.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. While I love to bake cakes, I don’t like to eat them. My husband, on the other hand, LOVES cake. We opted for a simple, two-tiered funfetti cake for him (because “love is FUN and FETTI sweet”) and a variety of cookies for me, thanks to the oh-so-delicious cookie delivery service, Tiff’s Treats. They never disappoint.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. BJ lived in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was good friends with my friend, Emily. We had spoken briefly in group texts and email chains, and it’s safe to say we were acquaintances. In summary: BJ needed dating advice. Caitlan offered her expertise. Caitlan checked in to see how things went/were going. Things hadn’t worked out. The rest is history–we dated long distance, as I was in Austin, Texas. We traveled many miles, used up hundreds (maybe thousands) of minutes on the phone, and, thanks to technology, spent hours upon hours staring at each other’s faces via FaceTime. It was a whirlwind romance, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Distance truly does make the heart grow fonder, and stronger.
Tell us all about the proposal! We got engaged on September 14, 2013. Months prior, we had made plans to head to College Station, Texas for College Gameday (gig ’em). BJ was quick to suggest that we should just go to Houston to watch the game with my family, so we did Gameday, gave BJ a tour of Texas A&M, and then headed home to watch the football game with my family. After watching Johnny Football put forth his best effort, it was time to get ready for dinner. Beej randomly told me to go outside with him, so I did, and the next thing I knew, we were in my dad’s car and he told me to blindfold myself. At this point, I knew something was up. Given the turns he made, I knew we were at Elephant Park (a park I frequented growing up), where he led me out of the car and walked me to a bench, only to inform me that he “forgot something in the car.” Moments later, I heard our family dog, my sweet Bailey boy, panting. When I took off the blindfold, Bailey was in my lap with a note tied to a precious bow tie collar. After reading the sweet letter, I looked up to see my man on his knee with a GORGEOUS ring! I didn’t think the day could get any better, until: 1. I spotted one of my best friends in the woods, where she had been secretly snapping photos. 2. The world’s greatest brother flew in from Raleigh to surprise me. 3. I walked into my house only to be greeted by 20 of my closest friends throwing us an amazing engagement party. It was the most magical day! I found out later that BJ had flown in that Thursday night (when he was supposed to be at a 5th grade retreat) to ask my parents’ and grandfather’s permission.
When did y’all get married? April 4, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 170
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Personally, my favorite part of a wedding is watching the groom’s reaction to his bride when he sees her for the first time. We opted out of a first look to allow our guests to be a part of our special moment. I couldn’t have been more happy with our decision. I knew he would be emotional, but I was shocked at just how emotional I got. Fact: we’re ugly criers.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We both agree that our favorite detail was the venue itself. The giant oaks that loomed above the ceremony site were enveloped with tiny lights. It was the perfect combination of rustic and serene.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? What’s more Southern than two born and raised Southerners getting married in the Texas Hill Country, eating fried green tomatoes/pimento cheese/biscuits, and washing them down with Shiner Bock and Lone Star beer?
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Planning a wedding in Texas while living in Tennessee posed to be more difficult than I thought it would be. We used my parents’ house in The Woodlands, Texas as our “wedding headquarters,” and when it came time to head to Austin, we overestimated what we could fit into our cars. Thankfully, selfless friends and family members helped transport the goods to and from Austin.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I’m always looking for ways to save money! I used online paper vendors (Minted and Wedding Paper Divas) for all of our paper products and printed out our wedding programs myself. My mother and I tackled several DIY projects, including all of the rehearsal dinner decorations and the gift tags for our favors. We also reused flower arrangements from the ceremony as centerpieces at the reception.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographer, Jen Dillender. Everyone told me that the wedding day was going to fly by, and boy, did it ever. We are beyond thankful to have the beautiful images that Jen captured to help us relive (and remember) our special day. She is a master of her craft and handles herself with the highest amount of class and grace. We love her, and all of our photos! Also, I have to mention that Camp Lucy is the greatest venue. For someone planning from a distance, their in-house catering and florals were a blessing in disguise!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? From BJ: For as long as I can remember, I have always wondered what it would feel like to have your breath taken away. The moment that Caitlan came into view, that feeling was realized. To watch her clasp onto her father’s arm, trying her hardest to force a smile through her tears of joy (hopefully joy) was the single greatest moment, of not only that day, but of my life. The opportunity to lock eyes with her on her walk down the aisle was the icing on the cake. She was the single most gorgeous thing I have ever seen.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? 1. ENJOY IT! 2. Stay true to yourselves. Don’t let other people’s weddings and opinions alter your vision. 3. Cherish the engagement/planning process and embrace those who offer a helping hand. I was blessed with parents who wanted to be there every step of the way. The wedding definitely wouldn’t have been the same without them.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life Currently, we’re settling into married life here in Nashville. We’re excited to see what life has in store for us. Hopefully, lots of puppies and cute kiddos :)

Believe it or not, Emily and Chris met during an Animal House-themed frat party! These two never thought they’d meet their better halves while donning togas, but after chatting, their common interests proved to take this meet cute right to relationship! Now, these two spend their time making way too much jam (be sure to read their adorable interview!), and dating each other even after their wedding–love that! Emily’s best advice for brides? “Continue to date each other and set aside time together that does not involve wedding planning.” We couldn’t agree more!

Big thanks to Graham Terhune for sharing this gorgeous day that had Lisa and I swooning all last week! We could barely wait to share it!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was my mom’s sixpence that she wore in her shoe on her wedding day. For my something blue, I honored both of my sweet grandmothers by wrapping a piece of my Grandmama’s blue wedding dress and my Granny’s blue handkerchief around my bouquet. My something old was my Papa’s fraternity ring that he wore every day. My something new was my sparkly Jimmy Choos!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes and we’re so glad that we did! Our “first look” pictures are some of our favorites. Although we were initially hesitant to stray from tradition, we agreed to give it a shot for the sake of getting to spend more time with our guests at the reception and being able to enjoy a quiet moment together. Walking down the aisle to my groom was equally as exciting and emotional!

I walked down the aisle to a bagpipe and organ duet of “Highland Cathedral.” Bagpipes have a special significance in Western North Carolina and I had always dreamed of walking down the aisle to this song. One of our favorite wedding planning moments was a private concert with our amazingly talented organist to select our music. We chose “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” for our Gospel hymn and my all-time favorite, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” for our communion hymn. We walked back up the aisle to “Hornpipe” by G.F. Handel. Our bagpiper was playing out on the lawn as guests exited the cathedral to board trolleys to the reception. Selecting our first dance song was perhaps the most difficult decision we made! We decided on “That’s How Strong My Love Is” by Otis Redding. My dad and I danced to “Tupelo Honey” by our favorite artist, Van Morrison. Chris and his mother danced the Carolina shag to “I Love Beach Music” by The Embers in honor of Chris’ late father, who played in a beach music band.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We incorporated several pieces of custom artwork. We worked with an incredibly talented family friend and artist to create a Quaker marriage certificate for guests to sign and a bar menu with our signature drinks and beer and wine selections. We also purchased a watercolor wedding map to include in our welcome bags and a custom painted monogram to use as a label for our strawberry jam wedding favors. Each of these are now hanging on the wall in our home and serve as a lovely reminder of our wedding day.

Describe your wedding flowers. Since most of our guests were from out of town, we wanted our reception to feel casual and welcoming, like a dinner party among friends. Stacey from the Bloom Room gave our venue the romantic, homey vibe that we envisioned with low arrangements of flowers that were lush, but not over the top. We used anemones, garden roses, peonies, hydrangea, and delicate greenery in an eclectic mix of antique silver, crystal, and mercury glass vases.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. It was divine! Our cake was funfetti with vanilla buttercream filling and frosting. The icing had a subtle, soft texture with our new married monogram on the top layer. Each layer had a piped beaded border and touches of fresh flowers.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I think one of the biggest things that sets Southern weddings apart is the value placed on honoring family traditions. For us, the most special of those was that we were married on my parents’ anniversary! One of my favorite details was a handkerchief I gave my mom with both of our monograms and wedding dates. We included the cake pull tradition at the bridal luncheon the day before, and then each bridesmaid tied their charm around their bouquet. We also served several classic Southern comfort foods at our reception. We had mini trout cakes and pimento cheese crackers for cocktail hour and buttermilk fried chicken (tossed in NC’s Texas Pete hot sauce!), green beans, and macaroni and cheese for dinner.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Chris at I met during the fall semester of our senior year at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. We knew of each other through friends; however, we officially met at an “Animal House”-themed mixer for his fraternity and my sorority. I never would have guessed that I would meet my husband at a toga party! We exchanged phone numbers and quickly found that we had a lot in common. We had our first date later that week with dinner at our favorite Greek restaurant and a walk through the arboretum.
Tell us all about the proposal! We planned a trip to the mountains to visit my parents for the weekend. On that Saturday, December 15, the four of us decided to head to Asheville to see the annual gingerbread house competition at the Grove Park Inn. After we spent time looking at the exhibit, Chris suggested that we walk around the resort a bit and get a picture together. We stopped to pose for a picture on a terrace overlooking a beautiful sunset over the Blue Ridge mountains. Just as my mom was getting ready to snap the picture, Chris got down on one knee and proposed! Then, as the icing on the cake, Chris’ mom and sister came running out to congratulate us. Little did I know, they had followed us from a distance throughout the gingerbread exhibit and around the resort. After that, we celebrated with dinner and champagne with our families.
When did y’all get married? April 26, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 170
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Before we were engaged, I fell in love with a dreamy tulle cap sleeve gown that I saw on Pinterest. When I started shopping for my wedding dress, I realized that the chances of finding that gown were slim to none, as it was an older design. I hoped to find something similar from the same designer, so I scheduled an appointment at Nitsa’s in Charlotte and invited my mom, sister, both grandmothers, and my best friend. As we began pulling dresses to try on, I was so excited to find that my dream dress was still available! The dress was everything that I hoped it would be: soft, feminine, and perfect for twirling!
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? My family is from a very small town near Asheville. We knew that our church would be too small to accommodate our guests, and reception venue options in my hometown would be limited. We decided to get married in Asheville, the city where Chris proposed and a place we love to visit together. We had our ceremony at the historic All Souls Cathedral. All Souls was commissioned in 1896 by George Washington Vanderbilt III, developer of the Biltmore Estate. For our reception, we loved the intimate atmosphere of the Century Room, with its exposed brick walls and views of downtown Asheville.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We recited traditional Episcopalian vows and wrote our own personal vows to each other that were read on the morning of our wedding.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My granddaddy read Philippians 4:4-9. This reading comforted us during the chaos of the final months of wedding planning and kept us focused on the meaning of marriage. Our other readings were Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, read by Chris’ sister, and Matthew 5:1-10 for our Gospel reading.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Our biggest challenge was definitely the guest list. We made the unfortunate mistake of booking a reception venue before we created our guest list. We spent so much time analyzing room diagrams and sending desperate emails to the event coordinator at the Century Room. In the end, I think we were able to maximize the space as best we could.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? Chris and I love to cook together, so we decided to make strawberry jam for our wedding favors. We slightly underestimated the amount of time that it would take to make 170 jars of jam and ended up spending an entire weekend in the kitchen, but it was well worth it. We also took on a few other DIY projects, including our escort card display and a sidewalk sign.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We are so grateful to have had Graham Terhune Photography! Graham and his wife, Samantha, are the sweetest, most genuine people that we had the pleasure of working with. They made us feel so comfortable on our wedding day and they didn’t miss one second of action. One of the best moments for my mom was watching Graham chase after our getaway car to ensure he got a great shot!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We will never forget when our priest asked us to turn around and glance around the church during the homily. Seeing so many of our favorite people from all different parts of our lives gathered together to celebrate with us was such an overwhelming feeling!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? It can be so easy to lose sight of the purpose of your wedding, especially when you get wrapped up in all of the details you “have to have.” Continue to date each other and set aside time together that does not involve wedding planning.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We’re enjoying life as husband and wife and spending time with our dog, Betsey. On our wedding day, Chris surprised me with 12 dates to celebrate each month in our first year of marriage. Next month, we’re headed to the U.S. Open!
