After meeting each other when they were young’uns (pre-cell phone young, y’all!), Lindsay and Ty’s wedding day was the accumulation of years of love and memories! As you can imagine, they shared so much throughout their years together, so when it came to plan their wedding, they chose wedding details based on meaningful moments. From the cabin where Lindsay got ready, the same site of their sweet Christmas proposal, to their gorgeous reception at Ty’s family’s farm, each detail came full circle with their relationship. And, major kudos to Lindsay for getting all her thank you notes out before their wedding day – y’all know we’re all about snail mail!

Big SW hugs to Mark Williams Studio for not only capturing this lovely day, but for creating the beautiful blooms as well!

My something borrowed was my Grandmother’s sash from her wedding dress in 1949 that I wrapped around my bouquet. My something blue was a patch I had sewn into my wedding gown, with my initials sewn in blue thread. My something old was my maternal Grandfather’s engraved pocket knife that the team at Mark Williams Studios incorporated as a “charm” on my bouquet. My something new was a handkerchief Ty had made for me with the words “Oh heavenly day, all the clouds blew away, Got no trouble today with anyone. The smile on your face, I live only to see. It’s enough for me baby, it’s enough for me, oh heavenly day, heavenly day, heavenly day. Only I’m glad to be here with you. I love you, Ty. 4-26-14” embroidered on it. They are the lyrics of the song “Heavenly Day” that was played during the ceremony.

Our venues were probably the most special part of our wedding. As a little girl, I had always envisioned a rustic wedding out at the cabin–a place that is so special to me. We got engaged at my family’s cabin, had the wedding at the cabin, and had the reception at the Tyson Ranch (Ty’s family’s land). My daddy worked so hard to make the cabin the place that it is, so it will always hold a special place in our hearts. The Tyson Ranch happens to be directly across the dirt road, and it is a beautiful property, complete with ponds, a barn, and horses in the pastures. At first, we weren’t sure how we would make the reception work out there, but I was determined and I had a vision. It turned out to be the most picturesque event ever.

On the Franklin farm, we have an old vehicle that my uncle fixed up into sort of an “open-air” bus. It has steps that you walk up to get in the back of it and a top and sides, but no windows or doors. It feels like a small school bus, but it has bench seats on either side. For years, the Franklins have been loading up in the “Red Rover” to go on rides around our farm, so we decided it would be neat to ride on “Red Rover” with my uncle driving. The entire wedding party rode and we had a blast on that short little ride. Our arrival to the reception made quite a scene! The “Red Rover” was decorated beautifully and fit our style just right.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our venues were out in the country on family land, all of our closest friends were included in the wedding, our vows and music were traditional, our menu at the reception was Southern food, and our band was a Southern band. Our wedding was a perfect example of the charm of the South.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Over fifteen years ago, our two neighboring churches would often attend services at the other church. Our paths first crossed when Ty was sixteen years old and I was fourteen. Ty sang the special music that night, and dinner was served in the social hall afterwards. Although I didn’t know it at the time, Ty had noticed me when I first walked into the sanctuary that night, and he was extremely nervous. All throughout dinner, we were eyeing one another, trying to make sure the other didn’t “catch us looking”. A few days later, Ty called my parents’ house and asked to speak to me (this was before cell phones, texting, etc.). We talked effortlessly for hours that very first time. The rest is history.
Tell us all about the proposal! Each year, my Daddy and I go out to the family farm to get mistletoe for a Christmas tradition. This year in particular, Ty informed me that “Mr. Marty (my daddy) said he wanted us to meet him at 3:00 to get the mistletoe.” I had been wrapping last-minute gifts all day and was not keeping track of time. At 3:10, Ty came in and said to me “Well, are we going to just let your Daddy do it by himself?? We need to go if we are going!” Ty drove right past the usual farm and informed me that Daddy wanted to try a new tradition this year, so we were going to get the mistletoe from my daddy’s cabin instead of the family farm. When we arrived at the cabin, Daddy wasn’t there yet. I was frustrated as I thought about all of the presents that I could’ve gotten wrapped during this time, but after a couple of quiet minutes went by, Ty began to tell the story of “this boy and this girl” as we sat beside the pond. He told our story from the beginning and said that it had always been a fairy tale, and that he never wanted the fairy tale to end, but he did want it to continue on to the next chapter. He got down on his knee, opened the ring box, and popped the question! Our parents, siblings, and closest friends were all on “standby” on the dirt road near the cabin. After the proposal, Ty summoned them all inside for champagne and food that Ty had arranged. Needless to say, Christmas 2013 was the best Christmas ever.
When did y’all get married? April 26, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 400
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did not do a first look. Ty and I both are very traditional, so that wasn’t even a consideration for us. We did not even talk to each other at all that day until I walked down the aisle, but we did write each other letters that we each read before the ceremony.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I guess the biggest challenge was working a full-time job as a nurse in a management position, basically taking no days off until the wedding. It was hard to focus my attention at work when all I could think about was wedding details! The second biggest challenge for me was my personal goal to get every single thank you note for all of our shower gifts written prior to the wedding. I was determined to have them all finished before the big day, and finding the time to sit down and do them was difficult.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I remember getting dressed inside the cabin as all the anticipation for this day continued to build. Just a few moments before it was time to start the ceremony, I looked out the window and saw all the people seated, as well as people standing, as there were no more seats available. Seeing all of our dear friends and family out there who had all come to share in this special day with us brought tears of joy to my eyes. It was at that moment that I told myself, “It is happening, let’s do this.” I couldn’t wait to walk down that aisle to meet my best friend at the altar.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are looking forward to having each other all to ourselves, like for evenings on the couch with popcorn and movies! We love to travel, so there are many fun times ahead. But mostly, we are just looking forward to getting to spend every single day with our best friend–doing life together, with the person we love the most. Doesn’t get any better than that.

One of BDK and I’s favorite things to do is reminisce about when we met. There is just something so fun about remembering our first date, as well as my absolute favorite, the silly get-to-know-you games we used to play while sitting in his hammock on the balcony of his college apartment! So, of course, I appreciated Jaimi and Mike’s super sweet proposal story all the more! I also appreciate how Jaimi defined a Southern wedding as a “close-knit support system filled with love and faith…your favorite people, supporting you in the biggest decision of your lives.” I don’t believe we could have said it better ourselves! Jaimi, you make the Sweet Tea Society proud!

Big thanks to Brooke Images for sharing this beautiful day with us!

From the time I started paying attention to wedding dress designers (probably about 10 years ago), I loved Monique Lhuillier lace dresses. My budget, however, was never going to allow me my dream Monique gown. Luckily for me, I have a very generous aunt, and upon getting engaged, she told me to pick out whatever dress I wanted and it would be her wedding gift to me. After the initial shock, excitement, and gratitude, I started my search. Then I found out that Monique Lhuillier was having a trunk sale at my favorite bridal gown shop in Atlanta, Joan Pillow! I had to wait two weeks, which was so hard because I was so excited! The fourth dress I tried on was THE dress. I was crying, my mom was crying, and even the sales person was tearing up. It was exactly what I was looking for, and I will never forget sharing that sweet moment with my mom.

My most memorable moment of the wedding was our first look. I had no expectation of what it was going to be like, and maybe because of that, I was so surprised by how much I loved having that personal moment. Due to the rain, our photographers positioned me in one spot and had Mike walk up to me. I loved that because he got to see me before I saw him, and when I turned around to see my groom, my heart just melted. Our eyes locked and there was so much raw emotion in that moment. He was shaking, I was shaking, and we both had tears in our eyes–it was just so cool!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Finding the perfect spot for our wedding was actually a huge challenge for me. I knew I did not want to do it in Atlanta (where we live), and I wanted a place with a destination feel that wasn’t super far away. I had heard great things about Amelia Island, so Mike and I went down to check it out. Not only was the property of Walker’s Landing gorgeous, but the space for the reception was warm and open and filled with huge windows to let in natural light. After seeing so many venues that did not work, I know when I saw this venue that it WOULD work.

We did not write our own vows, but we spent time piecing together our favorite lines from wedding ceremonies we found online and through our officiant. My favorite line was, “Mike and Jaimi, may you pledge to each other to be loving friends and partners in marriage. To talk and to listen, to trust and appreciate one another; to respect and cherish each other’s uniqueness, and to support, comfort, and strengthen each other through life’s joys and sorrows. May you promise to share hopes, thoughts, and dreams as you build your lives together. May your lives be ever intertwined, your love keeping you together.”

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? My worst nightmare was that it was going to rain on my wedding day and my outdoor ceremony was going to move inside. Well, that happened, but you know what? It did not change the outcome of the day. I still married my best friend and we still danced the night away with our family and friends, and it was meaningful and beautiful. So, my biggest advice for a bride who is planning an outdoor wedding is to have a legit backup plan–not some small, dingy room in the basement of a hotel. Really put some thought into it. Go over the rain plan with your vendors so that everyone is on the same page. And at the end of the day, just enjoy it all!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: In lieu of table numbers, we designated a destination we had been together to each table. On each table card was a name of the place we’d been, and on the other side was a story about when we were there, and what we remembered/loved about it. Writing out these stories was such a fun walk through our memories together. I also loved the chalkboards for our food stations that I had ordered from a lovely lady I found on Etsy. There is something about hand lettering that makes me so happy, and our vendor delivered that in spades!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? To me, a Southern wedding means a close-knit support system filled with love and faith. Our day was filled with our favorite people, supporting us in the biggest decision of our lives. We are so lucky that both of our parents have been happily married for almost 30 years each. Additionally, this Southern wedding would not be complete without a slider station filled with barbecue pulled pork, classic cheeseburgers, and fried green tomatoes!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our wedding cake was two different flavors. One was called “For the Love of Chocolate” and included chocolate sponge cake, chocolate ganache, and chocolate truffle mousse. We added a raspberry drizzle since my groom loves chocolate and raspberry. The second flavor was something I came up with: coconut pound cake with raspberry and key lime cream and buttercream icing. It was so light and refreshing. As well as our large cake, we also served donuts to our guests!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met on a blind date! In November 2009, I got a text from a girlfriend from college (we were sorority sisters at FSU, go Noles!), who said she had a guy friend she had known since high school that I should meet. After a little Facebook investigation, I agreed. Meanwhile, Mike was doing the exact same thing (I guess there is no such thing as a complete blind date anymore with social media!). After exchanging some Facebook messages, we met in Buckhead, Atlanta at a fun restaurant called BluePointe. We immediately hit it off and the conversation was effortless–it was by far one of the best first dates I had been on. After that wonderful evening, Mike asked me out on a couple more dates, and from there, we became official and best friends (as cheesy as that sounds). During our courtship, we conquered the Atlanta restaurant scene–we both love to eat!
Tell us all about the proposal! On a Friday night, I got a call from Mike while I was at work. He said that he had made surprise dinner plans for us, but he would not tell me where we were going. Before we had dinner, I had plans with a girlfriend to get our nails done. A long time ago, I told Mike to never propose unless my nails were looking right, so he asked one of our good friends to go to the nail salon with me that evening. Between the manicures and surprise dinner plans, I had a good feeling about where this night was headed. When I arrived at our place, Mike had our favorite bottle of wine chilling for us to drink before dinner. It was a bottle of wine we had gotten in my hometown of Santa Barbara on a trip we took together in 2010. The name of this bottle of wine was called “Mrs,” and I always thought/hoped that we would one day drink it when I was his Mrs. It was December, so it was pretty chilly out, but our condo has a gorgeous view of the Atlanta skyline, so Mike suggested that we enjoy the “Mrs” outside. I had left my jacket in my car, so I grabbed his. He came out to see me wearing his winter coat and immediately gave me a different jacket (little did I know, the ring was in his coat pocket!). I could tell Mike was nervous, but we settled into our seats on our patio. He said “Let’s play a game–you tell one of your favorite stories about us, then I will, and we will cheers each time.” I LOVED this game and I started from the very beginning. We talked for two hours about everything we loved about the last three years we had shared together. When the time was just right, Mike got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I could not have been more happy and excited and speechless after the entire conversation! It was perfect and so us.
When did y’all get married? May 3, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 97
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I chose to walk down the aisle to “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles. I have always loved that song. and my mom used to call me Sunshine was I was little, so the song was a nod to that. It turned out to be the perfect choice, because it rained the entire day until I walked down the aisle, when the sun came out as the song was played!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I talked the minimum down at our venue because we felt strongly that we were going to have a smaller wedding and did not want to have to spend a certain amount on food and beverages if our guest list would not accommodate that. I also used the bridesmaid bouquets as centerpieces on the head table, so right after the ceremony, my wedding planner scooped them up and put them into the vases that were waiting for them.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Oh my goodness, our band! They completely rocked our night! People were raving all night about how much fun they were. I’ve always said that if people are dancing so much, they forget to eat their cake, the wedding is a success–and ours was!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are looking for a house in Atlanta! We are excited for the adventures to come with home ownership and are soaking in the bliss of having nothing to do after work. We hope to travel somewhere abroad next year!

We talk a lot at Southern Weddings about letting your wedding venue guide the rest of the day’s design and decor, and since the South is blessed with an abundance of breathtaking locations, it makes a Southern bride’s job a little easier. Sarah and Gabe thoughtfully chose Spring Island, South Carolina for their wedding venue–an idyllic, Lowcountry community where Sarah’s parents own a home. The people there, including many of their vendors, watched Sarah and Gabe’s relationship grow over the years, making their wedding even more intimate and meaningful. From the cotton detailing on her dress to the soft, neutral palette in the decor, Sarah was inspired by Spring Island in more ways than one, and we’re so grateful that Ashley Seawell was on hand to capture every detail!

My favorite thing about my wedding dress was that it felt like it was made for Spring Island. The lace of the bodice and the appliqué pieces on the skirt were cotton (which Spring Island was known for) and the washed organza skirt was so light, it felt that it was supposed to get dusty on the walk down the oak alley. I found my dress at Mark Ingram Atelier in New York, where they happened to be showcasing Peter Langner’s dresses that day. The first few dresses of Peter’s I put on were absolutely gorgeous and fit amazingly. When I put this dress on, my mom, sister, and I all knew that it was perfect. I tried on many more dresses, but nothing compared. When we went back the next day to get the dress, Peter did a pen and ink sketch of the dress and signed it for me. When he said I was the first bride ever to pick the dress, I cried.

Describe your bridesmaids’ dresses. How did you choose them? Each of the bridesmaids wore a different dresses in a variety of colors. I did not want one or two particular colors to dominate the wedding, so we coordinated the bridesmaid dresses in multiple soft pastel shades. I also wanted all of my bridesmaids to be comfortable in the dresses they wore that day, so it seemed best to let each of them pick one that they loved.
Describe your wedding flowers: The flowers were incredible. They were the perfect soft colors, and I loved the dusty miller and peonies! I especially loved the white spirea magnolia and cherry blossom branches at the ceremony. We kept my bouquet nice and small, so that it didn’t overpower me. It also had special trailing ribbons that were embroidered with my maiden initials, which were beautiful!

The wedding ceremony was held before the statue of Saint Francis, under a canopy of oaks draped with spanish moss. Our ceremony was very personal. Gabe’s dad, Tommy, was our officiant, which was very special. He collected advice on marriage from family and friends, which he incorporated into the ceremony. One thing that was very unique and special was the long walk I took with my Dad down the oak alley. It was so serene, and many guests commented on how magical it was to watch from a distance as we started our walk.

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Our cocktail hour was supposed to be at the Old Tabby Ruins on Spring Island. Unfortunately, the rain didn’t cooperate and we had to move it inside, but it was still beautiful! We were married on the Saturday of the Kentucky Derby, and since I am an equestrian, we played the Derby on the radio and served mint juleps. Some of the guests even wore hats for the cocktail hour. I loved it because the cocktail hour was a nod to the derby without the cocktail hour or the wedding becoming derby-themed.

What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Why was this design special to you as a couple? Spring Island is so naturally beautiful that we wanted the beauty of the Island to be the focal point, and for all other aspects of the design to be in harmony with that beauty. Once we made that decision, Gabe really let me, my mom, and Ashley Rhodes run with the design. I knew that I did not want a dominant color scheme, so we used a lot of natural finishes and added in soft pastels to keep it from becoming dull or overly rustic. I told my mom and Ashley my overall vision, and they were really responsible for executing on the details. My mom is an incredible interior designer, and she and I are very close, so I trusted the decisions she and Ashley made. Even though we used the wooden farm tables, we used silver chargers, soft flowers, and hurricanes filled with oyster shells and candles to dress it up.

The watercolor detail of the wedding really evolved during the course of planning. I knew from the start that I wanted the envelope liners of the save the dates and invitations to show images of Spring Island, so we called one of my parents’ best friends from college to see if he might be able to do a couple of watercolors. They were so beautiful, I wanted more, so we incorporated them throughout the wedding. Now, the originals of the watercolors are framed and hanging in our dining room. It was so generous of Julian to do all of the watercolors and so special that such a large detail of the wedding was done by someone I have known my entire life!

My mom poured her heart and soul into planning the wedding, and she knew every single detail of the day. Or, so she thought! I wanted to show her how much I appreciated everything she did to make the day perfect, so I wrote her a letter to tell her. I arranged to have Sideshow Press print the letter on wood stock and ship it directly to Ashley Rhodes, so I could surprise my mom with it at the wedding. When my mom got to her table for dinner, the letter was waiting at her seat in lieu of her place card. I will never forget watching my dad read her the letter and seeing the look on her face.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Sparks flew in the library at Vanderbilt while we were studying for finals during our second year of law school. Anything not to study, right? We left for winter break a few days later, but kept in touch. When we came back for the spring semester, we started dating almost right away and the rest is history.
Tell us all about the proposal! It was a quiet moment between us at home. We celebrated that night with family and friends!
Tell us all the basics of your wedding! Gabe and I chose Spring Island because my parents have a home there, so it is a meaningful place to both of us. I always thought I wanted to get married in Colorado on Strang Ranch, where I grew up horseback riding, but I felt it was important for the venue to be a place that was equally meaningful to both of us. Spring Island was a natural choice. Anyone who has been to Spring Island, knows that it is a truly special place, and we were able to spend a lot of time there during law school. All of the people on Spring Island, including the wonderful staff, watched our relationship grow over the years. Having them all there for the wedding made the day even more intimate. I must have thanked Jim and Betsy Chaffin, a pair of the original developers, for creating Spring Island ten times that night!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Magical, romantic, boisterous
What was the weather like on your big day? Let’s just say it was not the weather that any bride dreams of! I woke up to a cold, steady drizzle of rain, and it stayed that way for most of the day. The ceremony and cocktail hour were both supposed to be outside, and I admit, I was a little disappointed–there may have been a few tears on my big sister’s shoulder. Amazingly, the skies parted long enough for photographs and, most importantly, for the ceremony. The sun even made an ever-so-brief appearance, shining right through the oak canopy, in the middle of the ceremony! After the ceremony, we managed to get all of the guests into the clubhouse, where Ashley Rhodes had seamlessly relocated the cocktail hour, mere moments before heavy rain set in for the remainder of the evening. To be honest, I think the rain made for an even better party, because with the tent flaps down and the rain pouring outside, it was the perfect environment for all of the guests to join Gabe and me on the dance floor!
How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding? 225
What did the groomsmen wear? The groomsmen all wore navy blue linen suits from J.Crew. Gabe made a few strong pushes for Duke Blue to be incorporated into the wedding, so we found blue and white gingham linen ties in just the right shade of blue, and had them embroidered with each groomsman’s initials.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We didn’t write our own vows, but we modified traditional vows to make them fit our style a little bit better.
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? My grandfather gave me a sixpence to wear in my shoe for good luck, as he had done for my mother, aunt, and big sister!
What kind of food did you serve? We kept the food light and fresh! We served arugula salad and stuffed flounder, andt was delicious! Chef Tony and the Spring Island Club did an amazing job. Pulled pork sliders and gatorade were a perfect late night snack after lots of dancing (and drinking)!
Tell us a bit about your first dance. We danced to Keith Urban’s “Without You” for our first dance. We took dance lessons before the wedding, which was so much fun. Of course, once we were out there, I’m pretty sure we forgot most of what we were taught.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our wedding cake was a beautiful meringue cake! The design went perfectly with the soft and natural palette of the wedding. During our cake cutting, Gabe tried to put some in my face, but I was too quick for him!
Tell us about your grand exit. I changed out of my amazing Peter Langner dress and into a shorter dress by Badgley Mischka. The guests threw birdseed and we departed in a vintage car. It felt like the exit came far too early in the night…though it was actually quite late!
Did you take a honeymoon? If so, where? We spent a few days in Beaufort after the wedding. It was nice to spend some quiet time with family after the busy weekend. We had a few family meals and spent some time on the boat. Then, we took a delayed honeymoon to Antigua. It was so beautiful–we did not want to leave!
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Enjoy it–it goes so quickly!
Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration: While I was getting ready and admittedly stressing about the rain, Ashley Rhodes mentioned to me that it rained on her wedding day, and that one of the best parts was that when it stopped raining, the birds all came out and started to sing. Shortly after Ashley told me that, the rain stopped and I headed outside for my bridal photographs. I was standing alone partway down the oak alley waiting for Ashley Seawell, and the birds started singing! It was such a peaceful moment and a great reminder to enjoy all of the wonderful little moments throughout the day.
