I can only imagine how much Haley and Dylan’s wedding from V6 inspired not only countless brides, thanks to the bright color palette and unique design elements, but also, many Southern grooms, thanks to the delectable-looking bacon bar! This fun Charleston wedding is a feast to the eyes, as well as a fabulous representation of Haley and Dylan’s self-proclaimed “over the top” personalities. They chose the bold colors and details to reflect their belief in living life to the fullest. Considering how much fun it sounds like everyone had, I’m sure the night was a wonderful reminder of this for their guests as well!

A Charleston Bride does such a great job with florals, I didn’t have to give much direction. Our flowers were bright red, pinks and corals, and most were displayed in a variety of gold containers. They were a mix of spray roses, cymbidium orchids, tulips, dahlia, hydrangea, peonies, ranunculus, celosia and lisianthus.

Being in the wedding industry, I always wanted to choose a time of year that was considered “off-season.” However, Dylan proposed in November and I didn’t want to wait until the winter of 2014, so summer it was! Lowndes Grove is my most favorite spot in Charleston, so there was no doubt with that choice!

We chose our ceremony music based on the music we both loved, and we were okay with not being super traditional. We chose a string duo to play some more modern songs. I walked down the aisle to “Imagine” by John Lennon and we recessed to “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles. Our officiant was also the president of our college–it was very important to us for him to be included in our big day. He is the most inspirational speaker and was very special to us.

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Our cocktail hour was on the front lawn of Lowndes Grove. We served a specialty cocktail made of champagne, St Germain, and brandied cherries. The glass was rimmed with edible gold glitter! The weather was absolutely perfect and the sun was just starting to set on the Ashley River.

What was the design inspiration for your reception? To put it mildly, we are pretty over-the-top people. Dylan and I love making a statement and we wanted the room to be filled with color and truly embody us as a couple and how we live our lives to the fullest. With the help of our planner, Melissa, we chose a palette of red, pink, and metallic gold! We also wanted the lighting in the tent to be insane–Technical Event Company used a mix of amber uplighting and gold chandeliers to really amp up the natural beauty of the plantation.

Who was your favorite vendor and why? Melissa, our wedding planner. She really kept us sane the entire time. Her attention to detail is unrivaled and I had never met someone more organized than me until I met her! I rarely meet someone that can fully read my mind (especially when it is going in a million directions) but then rein me in at the same time. I remember at one point she said, “No Haley, we cannot have a fully gold confetti wall, edible gold glitter, gold cakes, gold chandeliers and a gold dance floor”–and sometimes I needed that!

What kind of food did you serve? Custom hors d’oeuvres were passed along with oysters on the half shell during cocktail hour. Chef Nico Romo of Fish Restaurant catered an entire custom menu based on our favorite meals and family recipes. Some of our favorites were “Dylan’s Bacon Bar” that included pork belly sandwiches, “piggy pops,” and even bacon-infused bourbon. We also served fried catfish and gravy with horseradish mashed potatoes, which is a staple in the Harper home! My parents wrote a cookbook together based on family recipes, so it was important to us that we shared some of our favorites with everyone. Having amazing food was probably most important thing to us. That is one of the reasons we chose Lowndes Grove–so we could use their caterer!!

We chose to have three different cakes! All were beautifully done with various gold designs. My favorite cake had gold polka dots and a fondant bow that mimicked the bow on my wedding dress. We had three flavors: chocolate with honey buttercream, lemon with passion fruit mousse, and raspberry jam and almond cake with cinnamon cream cheese.

Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration: “Hold hands, look both ways and stay together.” My dad said this in his toast. It is something he has told me since I was a little girl and I never realized until that night how important it really was.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Dylan and I met mainly because my college roommate and one of my best friends had a huge crush on him. While I was out of town one of the first weekends of our freshmen year of college, he and his friends decided to play a prank on her! I came home to a completely turned upside down room–drawers flipped upside down, sheets off the bed, and everything a complete mess!! The next time I saw him, I told him he was never allowed in our room again. Our love story is definitely a little slower–we started as inseparable friends and our foundation is based on that friendship. It wasn’t until a year later that we decided to take that risk of turning our friendship into something romantic. After that, we never turned back.
Tell us all about the proposal! Dylan told me that we had a work dinner to go to at one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston, Charleston Grill. We arrived about ten minutes late. They served us a glass of champagne and let us know that our party was late as well, which seemed odd to me. We were escorted to the courtyard area, and not a minute later, Dylan was down on one knee asking the most important question of my life! He had also booked a photographer to capture every moment of the proposal! I wanted to call my parents immediately, but Dylan told me that he had a surprise outside and to not get on the phone. I was then surprised by my very best friend and maid of honor, Ashley, and our best friend Clarke on rickshaws draped in string lights with a “JUST ENGAGED” sign! The rickshaws then drove us to Fish Restaurant, where we were greeted by family and friends. It truly was the most magical night and we’ve never felt so loved!
Tell us about your beautiful engagement ring and how/why your husband (or the two of you!) chose it: I always thought I knew what I wanted in an engagement ring, but found I was so wrong when I actually went and tried them on! Dylan ended up getting a ring made for me that included some family stones, which made it very special for us. It is a five-stone round diamond ring, and it is stunning! My wedding band is all rubies and family stones from my grandmother. Dylan’s wedding band is a gold band engraved with lyrics from our wedding song, “The Best is Yet to Come,” and our wedding date.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Fabulous, romantic, unforgettable.
How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding? 180
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? My wedding dress was beautiful, and the second I tried it on, I knew it was the one. My mother, mother-in-law, and one of my friends came dress shopping with me over Thanksgiving, and our last stop was Maddison Row. Lindsey, the store manager, made me feel 100 percent comfortable throughout the entire process and we still see each other often. My favorite part of my dress was the horsehair bow with lace ends that was around the waist. We also incorporated this design on our cake.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We used a mix of traditional and contemporary vows. We thought it was important to focus on the words and what we were promising to one another, so we worked really hard to make sure each line was something we would and could live by for the rest of our lives. Our favorite line was “All that I am, I give to you and all that I have, I share with you.”
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? My mom gave me her penny that she wore in her shoe for good luck the day of her wedding.
What was the most memorable or touching moment about your wedding day? The morning of my wedding, I started the day having breakfast alone with my parents. Being both only children, this was a big day for us! Afterwards, my dad dropped my mom and I off at Lowndes Grove to start getting ready, and not much later, I received a flower arrangement with a note that read “I love you, Ms. Harper!!! Love, Daddy.”
Did you toss the garter or bouquet? Yes! We had too. You don’t see it too much at weddings anymore, but I swear, it is the most fun part! Something funny always happens. At our wedding, Dylan totally missed everyone during the garter toss, so he had to do it again!
Tell us about your grand exit. We had a sparkler exit, which I think always looks the most magical in pictures! Then we left in a 1966 red Pontiac GTO!!.
What was Southern about your wedding? We are both from the South, so we definitely included some Southern traditions. Dylan gave his best guy friends monogrammed rocks glasses with our wedding date and bourbon and coke in a cigar box. Dylan’s fraternity brothers did their traditional “round up,” which is where they basically all sing in a circle and pour beer on one another. We nixed the beer throwing for our wedding though! During the ceremony, my dad walked me down the aisle, Dylan’s dad was his best man, and we both had a house party instead having a bridal party. My high school girlfriends and I have a hanky that we are passing down with our new initials on it to wrap around our bouquets. I was the second person to use it and it was really special. Before the ceremony, we opted not to see each other at all–I think that may be where all the nerves came from, but it was so worth it once the doors opened and I walked onto the front lawn at Lowndes Grove.
Did you take a honeymoon? If so, where? We decided to go to San Francisco and wine country. Dylan and I are total foodies and love a great glass of vino. We wanted to go somewhere that would get us out of the heat a bit and allow us to really enjoy our time together.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Two things: have a welcome party, even if it is something small or a get together at a local spot. It really helped us make our rounds and say hello to everyone so we didn’t feel pressure on our big day. Second, hire a planner. They make your life way easier throughout the whole process so that you feel 100 percent carefree during your wedding week and while you are away for your honeymoon.

There is nothing quite like the sight of rolling Virginia hills. I imagine that anyone who lives in Virginia at some point, myself included, has a soft spot for these sweeping views, and it is easy to see why Lindsay and Bryan cite their venue as their favorite wedding detail! Once they selected the gorgeous location, they worked with vendors they love (including many family and friends) to fill their wedding with sentimental details that nodded to their relationship and the place they call home. And of course, since Lindsay works for the incredible Southern Blooms team in Charlottesville, it’s no surprise that her fall-inspired florals were breathtaking!

Bryan proposed during a baseball game six months after our first date, on July 15, 2012–he played for a local league. He asked a friend who pilots antique airplanes to fly over the field with a banner: “Lindsay, will you marry me?” Turns out, everyone at the game knew about it (but me!) and both of our parents were there to celebrate. It was such a special day!

Describe your wedding flowers. They were incredible! For the palette, we were inspired by the rich and vibrant colors of fall in Virginia, and loved the idea of using local foliage and flowers in the bouquets and decor. Southern Blooms nailed it and truly outdid themselves–it was everything we could have hoped for and beyond anything we could have imagined. They are an amazing team of designers!!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The venue. Bryan and I knew we wanted to be married outside with a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so my dad suggested visiting his friend’s farm. We knew right away that it was the perfect spot! We were drawn to the wide open space and the panoramic view of the mountains.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided against doing a first look. I guess we’re a bit traditional that way, but also, I couldn’t wait to see his expression as I walked down the aisle! There’s something so special about that moment: being dressed in a gown you’ve been hiding for months, wearing something old, new, borrowed, and blue. Even though you are standing in front of everyone you love most in the world, it’s as if they all melt away and the universe only consists of two.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? E.E. Cumming’s “I Carry Your Heart.” This poem spoke to us in such a way that there was no question of whether or not to include it in the ceremony. To carry the heart of another, to carry it in our hearts, is to carry the whole of our emotional lives–the good and the bad. This type of love creates a new identity through the unity of two hearts living for each other. On our wedding, day we promised to carry each others’ heart within our own.

The biggest challenge of planning an outdoor wedding was coming to terms with the possibility of bad weather and convincing myself to not be afraid of the rain. Whenever I found myself stressing about an inclement weather plan or what to do in case of a late season hurricane, I would look up beautiful weddings of couples who got caught in the rain: romantic photos of drizzly ceremonies, colorful rain boots and flower girls splashing in puddles, dreamy shots of the bride and groom beneath an umbrella. I even found myself secretly hoping for a little precipitation!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? So many Southerns details were a part of our wedding, from the farm venue to the locally-grown flowers and foliage in the bouquets, to the sweet potato pie and corn pudding on the buffet table. We loved the idea of incorporating family heirlooms and little personal touches, like an old mantle displaying family wedding photos. Bryan’s bout included a fishing fly, and his old baseball glove was used as the ring bearer’s pillow. The bridesmaids were transported to the ceremony site via hay wagon and an antique tractor, a nod to my family’s farming roots. We used my great grandparents’ china on the head table, my dad’s homegrown sorghum syrup as favors, and Bryan’s mother’s cranberry glassware for the bride and groom.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We are blessed to call all of our vendors, who worked so hard making our day seamless and perfect, our friends. My father works for Mill Valley BBQ, who provided the delicious Southern-infused meal. Shindig’s seriously talented and organized Meghan Streit was my Young Life leader in high school, our dear friend Tod baked the wedding cake, and Bryan’s childhood minister presided over the ceremony. We were honored to have the stunning flowers provided by Southern Blooms’ skillful crew. I am so lucky to work for this amazing design company, whose owners have a great eye for detail and an unbelievable collection of everything from lanterns to the spectacular arbor they constructed of old windows salvaged from a barn in Pennsylvania. And we knew, without a doubt, that our photos taken by Jen Fariello would be gorgeous reminders of the most important day of our lives.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? When others offer a helping hand, take them up on it! We absolutely could not have planned our wedding without the support and help from our wonderful parents, family, and friends. Trust your vendors and designers: they’ve been there, done that, and know what is best.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Our mothers have known one another for years and worked together at a private school in Culpeper, VA–they even hatched a plan to set us up when we were in college. Despite this, we didn’t meet until a blind date years later in January 2012, when our good friend decided to play matchmaker.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My mom and I went dress shopping on a whim–we were in Richmond running errands and dropped by a bridal shop. I tried on several styles, including one I had fallen in love while looking online. That dress was the first that I tried on and I knew that it was the one!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Walking down the aisle, “Arioso in A” was performed by violin and cello. “Ave Maria” was sung by Sherry Spencer, who wears many hats and is also lead designer/co-owner of Southern Blooms. Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love” performed by Garth Brooks was our first dance. “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole was the father/daughter and mother/son dance. The last dance was to “Ain’t That Love?” by Ray Charles.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Our friend who introduced us is also an accomplished chef and baked our wedding cake. Each layer had different flavors and fillings, and it was as beautiful as it was delicious!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I did! My borrowed was my friend’s sixpence, the old was a pair of pearl earrings that Bryan gave me, blue was my grandmother’s blue handkerchief, and my dress was new.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There were so many special moments! Riding in the 1949 Ford truck to the ceremony. Seeing Bryan for the first time while walking down the aisle and not realizing how fast I was moving until my dad whispered “slow down!” The surprise petal toss as we exited the ceremony. Our first dance and looking out at all of the people that we love in one space–that was an incredible feeling. Seeing our parents’ smiling faces, because none of this would have been possible without their love and support. The moment the sun broke through the clouds after the ceremony. Looking across the field after dark and seeing the illuminated cross on the ceremony altar. The sparkler exit and leaving on the old hay wagon, only to find our Jeep completely and thoroughly decorated.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Married life is great! Bryan and I are very excited to build our new home and to start a family.

Y’all know how much a city wedding gets my heart pounding, and Anne and Eric’s Nashville nuptials are no exception. I could go on and on about how much I love their gorgeous fall color palette (charcoal, portobello, champagne, garnet and ivory–yes please!) and their modern loft reception space, but all of that pales in comparison to how I imagine this wedding must have felt. After debating whether to elope or throw a wedding (which they knew would have to be big, no getting around it!), Anne and Eric decided to take advantage of the opportunity to have all their loved ones together. Sure enough, 290 of their 300+ guests traveled from far and wide to Nashville to celebrate their wedding. That is so much love in one room!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We are both alumni of Florida State University. As students, we were members of an organization for campus leaders, which is unique in that its membership continues beyond graduation. Although we were not at FSU at the same time, we met at the organization’s summer retreat. I was living in Phoenix, and Eric was in Tampa. We spent the following year as great friends, communicating and traveling together, but without any romantic advances. During one Sunday “marathon call” (as we called our regular multi-hour phone conversations), Eric mentioned that he would like to come visit me in Phoenix. Since Eric had mentioned in a previous “marathon” that he hadn’t yet visited his brother in New York City in the three years he’d been living there, I declined on the grounds that he “needed to go visit his brother before coming to see some girl.” “Fine,” Eric responded, “But if I’m going to NYC, then you’re coming with me! And just to be clear, I want to take you on a date when we get there.” So, in August 2010, one calendar year later, we met at our annual retreat and departed for New York at its conclusion.

The wedding colors were charcoal, portobello, champagne, garnet and ivory. The garnet was used sparingly as an accent, and was the primary color of the flowers. What a statement! They were a stunning combination of mokaras orchids (which are special to Eric and I), cymbidiums, spray roses, garden roses, calla lilies, safari sunset, amaryllis and kangaroo paw. The bouquets were tied in a champagne satin ribbon. At the reception, the floral arrangements were hung, soared on top of ottomans and billowed on tables, making the most dramatic and gorgeous impact. Paired with the soft lighting and the linearity of the space, the textures and hues were a show-stopper!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Eric and I were blessed to be married by repeating the same vows that have married so many other amazing couples before us!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Old Testament Reading: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; New Testament Reading: 1 John 4:13-19; Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:13–16

We decided to do a first look for a variety of reasons, but most importantly was this: of our 320 guest, more than 290 had traveled to Nashville for our wedding from out-of-town. We wanted to spend as much time with our families and guests as possible. We chose to do bridal, couple and family shots before the wedding, going straight to the reception after the ceremony. This was the groom’s favorite moment of the wedding–the moment where the hard work had ended, and the fun began.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We loved the layout of our reception. There was one long bar, a variety of table sizes and heights, and a number of soft seating arrangements. Also, I requested a “kid’s area” with a private dance floor, activities and appropriately-sized furniture as a special haven for the children who were invited. It was a lovely space, and one that lent itself to reuniting with old friends and meeting new ones!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I am a designer, so I elected to make the design decisions, while Eric was responsible for the “taste” decisions. We had a seven-tier lemon cake with buttercream icing. The tiers were a combination of round (top five layers) and square (two base layers), and combined smooth and textural icing. This design was selected as a representation of the juxtaposition of the glamorous and structural elements of the reception. Eric chose the lemon-flavored cake because it reminded him of his favorite desert that his mom made as a kid: lemon icebox pie. He also felt it would be refreshing in late July, which was absolutely true.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? When first engaged, we discussed whether we wanted to elope or have a wedding. We knew that if we had a wedding, it would be a big one–there was no way around it. Ultimately, we decided to have the big wedding, because it would be the one opportunity to have all of our friends and family from all over the country in one room at the same time. And now, every memory that we reminiscence about from our day circles back to that initial goal.

Tell us all about the proposal! As we were coming up on two years since our first date, Eric wanted to go back to New York for a “rendition of our first date.” Since we had talked about getting engaged, I naturally thought the trip was planned around a proposal, and was honestly disappointed in the lack of creativity of a “first date-inspired proposal.” Little did I know, the vacation was merely a ploy to focus my energy on getting engaged in New York, so that he could surprise me and do it sooner. So, when Eric gave me an address, asking me to meet him for a “surprise” in Miami, I didn’t think much of it. The address was the Miami Seaquarium, and the surprise was a swim with the dolphins! At the end of the swim, as we were exiting the water, the trainer told me that Ringo (appropriately named!) had something for me. The dolphin swam to the edge of the pool with a buoy in his mouth. As I bent over to pick it up, I saw that it said “Will You Marry Me?” on it! Laughing, I turned around to tell Eric that I was engaged to a dolphin, finding him on his knee behind me with a ring. The photographer, who had been carrying the ring in his pocket, took dozens of pictures as I said “YES!” And, yes, we did go to New York the following weekend, recreating our first date. The trip ended up being an encore celebration rather than the main event!
When did y’all get married? July 27th, 2013–four years after we met, three years after our first date, and one year after we got engaged
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 320
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I had a grandiose idea to bring my mom, sister, grandmother and mother-in-law-to-be to Orlando to shop for wedding dresses. Instead, I allowed a sweet saleswoman to talk me into trying some on while casually looking at bridesmaid dresses in Nashville with my mom. I tried about ten, and we agreed the first dress was “the one.” We decided to keep it simple and buy the dress on the spot. Good thing, because the style was soon discontinued!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had our first dance to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”; my dad and I danced to “In My Daughter’s Eyes” by Martina McBride; Eric and his mom had their dance to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.” Since we had so many families at the wedding, we conjured up an idea to share the dance floor with other fathers and daughters, and mothers and sons who were attending. Having never seen or heard of anyone doing this, we needed to get creative to execute it well. Working with the band, we decided to pre-record a special message to our parents, using that as an opportunity to welcome the other families to join in the rare moment. It became one of the most special events of the evening as the dance floor was filled with examples of love and family: one friend danced with his 8-month-old baby girl, Eric’s brothers joined in surrounding their mom, my dad stole a dance with my mom. One dear friend came up to me, with tears in her eyes, exclaiming, “You gave me my first dance with my son!” What a special moment!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Being in Nashville, our wedding was inherently Southern. We were married in the church that I grew up attending and where I was baptized–a gorgeous Episcopal church. On the Friday of our wedding weekend, the groom’s parents hosted a welcome reception for all of the wedding guests in the Rotunda at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Not to mention, our families had just eaten their rehearsal dinner at a local favorite, a restaurant called Southern!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest obstacle of the wedding was planning remotely. Our hectic work schedules only allowed weekends for preparation and meeting with vendors, flying to Nashville on Friday nights and traveling back to Orlando on Sunday evenings.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We can’t possibly narrow it down to one: our photographers were the most amazing, easy to work with and fun team we could have asked for. The band absolutely killed it–people are still talking about them! We also just adored the flowers and can’t stop looking at pictures of them.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Our advice is to simply listen to your heart while you are planning your special day. From the colors to the emphasis on prayer, family and love, to the atypical way food was served and dances were danced, no one could deny that our wedding was perfectly designed specifically for us.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are happy to be living together for the first time, sharing life as a team. We are looking forward to seeing what the Lord has in store!
