I’d have to agree with Kathie–being announced as Mr. and Mrs. your-new-last-name is one of the most memorable moments of a wedding (even if it’s pronounced wrong, like when you new last name is Kloess–pronounced “close,” by the way!). There is something so magical about it–it somehow solidifies in your mind that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with your best friend! Along with hearing those sweet words for the first time, Kathie and Matt also shared with us that seeing their stunning tent for the first time was one of their favorite moments of the day, and I can totally see why! They worked with the gals at Karson Butler Events to take the already lovely Inn at Perry Cabin and create a wedding day that was as beautiful as it was guest-friendly. They even provided an on-site nanny for their guests with littles ones–so thoughtful!

My bouquet was a lush, romantic, hand-gathered bouquet of beautiful flowers in shades of ivory and soft peach. Our florist incorporated a brooch that has been in my family since the 1800’s.

Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. The ceremony took place in a small, Catholic church in St. Michaels, Maryland. My brother and Matt’s aunt did the readings. It was very special to us because we had Matt’s family priest from Colorado marry us.
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? No, but we did mention my cousin’s husband, who is in the Army and was overseas, as well as my mom, who passed away in 2007.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? That it took me 30 minutes to pick it out! It was the second dress I tried on, and I immediately fell in love with it.
Describe your bridesmaids’ dresses. How did you choose them? I was not a high maintenance bride, so I let my bridesmaids pick their own dresses. As long as it was within my color scheme, I felt confident that my bridesmaids would pick something that would work for them and look great.

We started our reception with cocktail hour under gigantic trees decorated with string lights. A bluegrass band played in the background to keep the guests entertained while we took pictures. A silhouette artist made our guests their thank you gifts. Guests dined on finger foods, an antipasti bar, and signature drinks inspired by our home states.

We wanted the tent to feel romantic and warm. We used antique silver vases for the centerpieces and had lanterns and flowers hanging from the fabricated tree branches in the tent. Silhouettes of Matt and I hung behind our chairs. The cake stand was made to look like a tree stump with our initials carved into it. We also had couches and lounge chairs for guests to sit on.

What kind of food did you serve? Our appetizers were watermelon cubes with feta and aged balsamic, spicy tuna tartar, mini twice baked potato, Gougéres cups filled with truffled mac and cheese, coleslaw mix on mini potato rolls, shrimp wontons with Asian dipping sauce, and an Antipasto display. Dinner was yellow heirloom tomato gazpacho, pickled cucumber salad, roasted chicken breast, and pan-seared salmon.

Our cake was absolutely amazing. Maggie Austin did such a wonderful job–we couldn’t have asked for anything better. The cake was such a hit that our guests were asking for seconds, and we totally ran out!

Tell us about your grand exit. As the night died down, we left and looked back at our tent. The lights on the fabricated trees in the tent cast shadows, so when you looked at the top of the tent, you could see the shadows of the trees. It was beautiful, and a great way to end the night.

Date of your wedding: August 24, 2014
How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Matt was working for a woman running for Congress in Colorado, and my family and I pledged to donate money to that campaign. Before an important fundraising deadline, Matt was required to drive to donor houses to pick up checks, including my house. We met and he picked up my check, and the next day, he called and asked me out on a date. I was supposed to be set up on a blind date through the same person running for Congress, but Matt asked me out first! We dated for six years before getting engaged.
Describe the proposal: Matt took me on a surprise overnight trip to the Inn at Little Washington. We arrived in the late afternoon and decided to have tea before heading up to our room. Normally, Matt would have wanted to take his time, but he kept asking if I was done and if we could go back upstairs. I finally gave in, and as I was getting ready for dinner, he turned to me, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him with my late mom’s engagement ring. It was a complete surprise. I, of course, said yes, and the Inn at Little Washington helped us celebrate.
Tell us about your beautiful engagement ring and how/why your husband (or the two of you!) chose it: My engagement ring was my mom’s. She passed away in 2007. The ring means a lot to me, and it means even more that Matt understands how important she was and is in my life. Wearing her ring reminds me daily that she is still with me.

How many guests attended your wedding? Approximately 60
What was the most memorable or touching moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moments for me were the father-daughter dance, our first look, the dancing, looking at the tent for the first time, and being called Mr. and Mrs. Kazan.
Were there any family traditions you included in the reception? My father and I danced to one of my late mother’s favorite songs, “Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.
What’s next for you as a couple? We just had a daughter, so we are looking forward to being parents.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Your wedding needs to be guest-friendly. We provided a nanny service for all of our friends who have small children, so they could enjoy the night knowing their children were close by and safe. Taking care of our guests was an important component of our wedding. Even though it’s your wedding, your guests (family and friends) need to be celebrated–without them, you would not be able to have such an amazing wedding.
Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration: “Walk slowly back up the aisle after the ceremony is over to take it all in.”

    This was such an amazing wedding for us at Nannytainment. I am sorry for delay in posting as I missed announcement of it being featured. We got some great images of the childcare set up and some terrific glimpses of the fun we had with the kids. It’s great timing to come across this now as I have a bride wanting a quote for there soon.

I always love when wedding venues hold a special place in couples’ hearts before they get married, and Camille and Austin reminded me that a wedding day can make a sentimental place even more special! Together with their planner, Shelly Fortune, Camille and Austin transformed Camille’s family’s farm into a venue for their beautiful wedding day, bursting with joy (and gorgeous blooms!). Now when they visit the farm, these two are reminded of their magical day over and over again! Heavens, what a wonderful memory to have!

Austin and I chose to get married at my parents’ farm, Three Fields Farm. I have three older sisters, and the sister right above me actually got married there in 2009, so I loved the challenge of showing the farm in a different light, as many of our guests overlapped. It is so special for Austin and me when we visit the farm now–we get to relive our magical day over and over!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Two of my sisters, my mom, and I went to Cincinnati’s Bridal and Formal to shop for my wedding dress. Both sisters that went with me had bought their wedding gowns there, so I was very comfortable in the store. The same bridal consultant that helped me find my dress had also helped two of my older sisters, in 2003 and 2009! My dress was the first one I ever tried on. I felt so special when I put it on and walked out of the fitting room–it had a lot of drama and presence to it, both of which I loved. Since this was going to be the one and only time I got to wear a wedding dress, I wanted to look very bridal. My dress and veil definitely accomplished that!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Honestly, I never considered not doing one–it made the most sense all around. Logistically, we couldn’t hide from each other, because we got married on my parents’ farm, where there are no homes or buildings (other than the barn) for us to hide in. Also, everything is so close together at the farm, which means all of our guests would have been sitting and watching us take pictures, causing us to lose that sense of intimacy. Another reason we chose to do a first look was because we wanted to be able to jump right into the party after the ceremony and let loose! Lastly, I wanted all of us to look as fresh as possible for our pictures, so getting all of the formal pictures checked off the list within four hours of finishing hair and makeup was so nice!

When I was walking down the aisle (it was very long and on the grass!), I kept stepping on the front my dress. I started to panic, as I imagined that everyone could see it, since all eyes were on me. My dad kept trying to get me to slow down. Just before we got to the chairs (the actual aisle), he said to me, “Camille, slow down. You only get to walk down this aisle once in your life. Take your time and enjoy it!” Even typing it, it still brings tears to my eyes because it was so special and is so true!

Our wedding flowers were one of the most important details for me, as I love flowers! I wanted to bring all of my colors together in my flowers so that everything would look cohesive. We used ivory and varying shades of pink (from light to a bright raspberry), mixed with pops of coral and burgundy. I wanted the flowers to flow naturally with various textures, and to be noticeable–I definitely didn’t want them to blend in. I hung fabric at the entrance of the barn and had my florist create a green garland to line the fabric, which was the perfect finishing touch!

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I paid a lot of attention to my rentals. Since we were married on my parents’ land, everything had to be brought in, from the chairs/tables/dishes to the restroom trailer and kitchen setup, which meant my rentals were going to be pricey. Anything that was decorative that I could buy myself rather than renting, I did, and it ended up being less expensive in the end! I purchased all of the lanterns, large glass hurricanes, and gold chargers, to name a few.

Raspberry (the color) and raspberries (the fruit) were present throughout our wedding–there were raspberries in the pre-ceremony, non-alcoholic signature drinks, in the pink champagne, the invitation ink color, the flowers, etc., so I chose a champagne cake with buttercream icing and raspberry filling. It was delicious!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Austin and I met in high school and were friends throughout. Sparks didn’t fly until years later (six years to be exact!) when I very randomly received a Facebook message from him, asking me to go to a wedding with him. My jaw literally dropped because it was COMPLETELY out of the blue–although we both attended UK, we didn’t stay in touch after high school. Occasionally, we’d run into each other on campus and exchange a quick, “Hi, how are you?” but that was it. Luckily, I didn’t have any plans and agreed to be his date. I recommended that we get dinner first to catch up, and we were the first ones seated for dinner at the restaurant, and the last to leave. The next day, my best friend came over to my apartment, and I specifically remember saying to her, “This is it–he’s the one!” Up to that point, I had always thought the saying, “You’ll know when you know” was so cliché, but I knew in that moment that it was true.
Tell us all about the proposal! Austin proposed while we were on a special Christmas trip to NYC. We were staying at the Waldorf (which should’ve been a giveaway that it was going to be an extra special trip, but I didn’t catch that one…), and he surprised me with room service for breakfast. When I lifted the silver dome on the plate, there was the ring and “Will you marry me?” written in chocolate on the plate. He got down on one knee and asked, and I said yes!

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 170
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we chose traditional vows–we felt it was an honor to say those vows to each other that so many have said before us. They perfectly said what we promise and feel for each other.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My maternal grandmother passed away just a few years ago. She was someone I was very close to and missed very much throughout my engagement and wedding. I carried an old handkerchief of hers (she always had handkerchiefs in her purse!) that had blue hydrangeas on it. It held the place of my borrowed, blue, and old–my dress and accessories were all new. It felt as though a piece of her was there that day to help wipe my tears as Austin and I said our “I dos.”
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I planted a small bottle of Woodford Reserve (since we were getting married in Woodford County, where Woodford Reserve is located/distilled) on my parents’ farm about a month before the wedding on a BEAUTIFUL day, in hopes that our wedding day would have that same kind of weather. We were so lucky and did, indeed, have that exact weather on our wedding day–no humidity and a high of 78. It was gorgeous! We also served a bourbon drink, an Old Fashioned, for our “His” signature drink, toasting to Kentucky tradition.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Knowing what advice/opinions to listen to and when to just nod, smile, and pay no attention! :)
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Austin and I are just enjoying being married and working on our home. We’re also trying to travel as much as possible!

Peaches are such a beloved staple in Southern agriculture and cuisine, and for couples like Ashlee and Tom, who live right in the heart of Georgia’s peach country, they take on an extra special meaning. From bridesmaids outfitted in mismatched peachy hues to the flavor of the ice cream Ashlee and Tom enjoyed during their first look, peaches played an important role in inspiring the look and feel of every detail of this sweet celebration. Ashlee said it best when she said, “Our goal was for our guests to be able to take a bite of a peach and to taste the peach ice cream, and, if just for a moment, be taken back to a time when life was much more simple than it is now.”

We’re so grateful to Haley Sheffield for sharing Ashlee and Tom’s beautiful wedding with us!

My first memory of Tom is from an Easter party in second grade; I’d found the “prize egg” during the hunt, and Tom came up behind me and stole the egg from my basket. Thankfully, one of the other guys in our grade wrestled it back from him. Tom swears he stole it because he had a crush on me, but I’m not quite sure if I believe that. We still laugh about it! Years later, when I told my parents that I was going on a date with Tom, my mom’s first reaction was, “the punk that stole your Easter egg?!” My parents adore Tom now, but he did have a reputation to overcome. Tom and I dated for eight years before we got engaged in June 2013.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, Tom and I did a first look and I’m so happy that we did. Our ceremony was at 7:30 P.M., so we wanted to do our photos before the official festivities began. I also wanted the first glimpse to be private and secluded, instead of in front of a large crowd. We saw each other on the front porch of the Lee Pope House and spent an hour walking through the peach orchard and venturing over to Pearson Farm to get peach ice cream, which is one of our favorite things to do together.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We wrote our vows together and repeated them after our officiant and close friend, Zack. My favorite phrase from our vows would have to be, “I vow to reach for your hand through any crisis and to turn to Christ through any trials.” I love how that phrase unites us with the Lord and is a gentle reminder that although we may lean upon each other, we ultimately look to Christ above all.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The music at the ceremony was one of my priorities. I chose to walk in to “Baleen Morning” by Balmorhea, which moved me to tears the first time I heard it a few years before our wedding. We also asked our guests to sing along with us to Steve Moakler’s song, “Holiday at Sea.” The lyrics to that song hold a deep meaning to us and remind us that this earth is only our temporary home.

Three days before our wedding, my lab, Odie, suddenly passed away. I was devastated and worried that I wouldn’t be able to put on a happy face through all the festivities that were about to take place. On our wedding day, I found comfort in the ordinary. Instead of anxiety, I looked at the crowd spread across the lawn at Lee Pope and I saw love. Instead of imperfect details, I saw the countless hours that everyone had pitched in to make that day perfect. I felt calm in the gentle breeze that day. I took deep breaths for the first time in months and felt thankful for the unseasonably cool temperature. As Tom and I slipped away, hand in hand, to share some peach ice cream, I found contentment in the simplicity of it all. For the first time of our 14-month engagement, I was able to see what that day was truly about. Although it was by far the most challenging part of our wedding and something most brides hopefully won’t have to face, I am grateful that it gave me the vulnerability to realize what a sacred day our wedding day was. I’d become so wrapped up in every detail being perfect that I’d neglected to focus on the real meaning behind the day.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Our ceremony venue and reception venue both hold a very special place in our hearts. Our ceremony venue is a house near our family’s farm that holds so much farming history. I have a special connection with the Lee Pope House, and I knew immediately that there was no place I’d rather join our lives at than there. Tom and our families spent over a year fixing up our barn for the reception.

Tom is a farmer and I wanted our entire wedding to represent that tradition. Our wedding was centered around peaches–what this small county in Middle Georgia is famous for. Our goal was for our guests to be able to take a bite of a peach and to taste the peach ice cream, and, if just for a moment, be taken back to a time when life was much more simple than it is now.

Tell us all about the proposal! I was in North Carolina photographing a wedding and Tom decided to come with me. He mentioned that he’d like to stay an extra day, which I found odd, because Tom is usually itching to get back to work on the farm. We went to visit Tom’s brother-in-law, Stephen, who is also a photographer. Stephen told me that he was “rebranding” and that he needed a new headshot for his website. The three of us went to a mountainside park close to Stephen’s house and I began taking photos. After we were done, Stephen somehow convinced me to let him take a few photos of Tom and me. He positioned Tom a few feet behind me in the background and then told me to look towards Tom. Tom was down on one knee holding the most beautiful ring, and all I remember was telling him he was “making a scene.” Those pictures are so special to us.

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 250
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I wanted my dress hunt to be very simple and relaxed. I took only my mom with me and we made a fun girls’ day out of it. We found my dress at the first shop we visited, The Sentimentalist in Atlanta. I loved how light and breathable it was. I’m a very low key person, so I wanted simplicity as well as comfort, and the Elizabeth Dye gown provided both. I selected a gold scalloped belt to accent the waistline.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Directly after the ceremony, Tom, Haley (our photographer), Aphid (our dog), and I snuck away for about 20 minutes. Tom took us to the edge of a field that overlooked the entire county–a gorgeous view. We caught the tail end of the sunset and it was the first time we’d gotten to be alone that entire month, really. It was so quiet and I felt so at peace at that moment.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We purchased a 100-year-old farmhouse and are knee-deep in renovations. Married life is so fun. I love not having to say goodbye at night. When he leaves for work in the morning, he kisses me on the forehead–he thinks I’m still asleep, but I’m not. I love that. I just love sharing this life with him.
