I think I hold my breath for the full week leading up to each photo shoot day, hoping and praying that we’ll be blessed with beautiful weather. Thankfully, because of our sunny Southern clime, we usually get our wish. But sometimes we don’t — and the result can still be beautiful! Even though the day of our Berry Bliss shoot was gray and chilly, we were still able to make some Southern Weddings magic happen. Big thanks to Graham Terhune for capturing the work that went into making the final images oh-so-lovely!

Most photo shoot days start with many deliveries — flowers and chocolate and paper, oh my!

There’s usually lots of ironing and sorting and unpacking, too. We were thankful to have our spring intern, Jessica, on hand to help with this one! We even did a little repotting of geraniums for our table centerpiece!

My go-to plan is to shoot any still elements (paper suites, bouquets, boutonnieres) inside in the morning while we set larger elements up and models get prepped. That way, we save the best light (afternoon!) for the people and table! And oh yes — you know who’s setting up the table. And hauling the table. And loading and unloading the table (and everything else).

Though we have a general idea of how everything’s going to look, I like to wait until the actual day to make final decisions and consider a few options for things like linens and table settings. Things can definitely look different when they’re next to each other and not just photos or ideas on paper! Happily, we had Whitney’s sweet puppy to distract us from our careful consideration!

We had some pretty cute human models, too, including Mr. Pax and his mama MacKenzie. It was all hands on deck for redheads at this shoot!

Even Miss Grace came to observe!

Did I mention that we do a lot of carrying and holding on shoot days? These next few photos should illustrate that pretty well. Let’s just say my back was a little sore the next day from all that crouching! But we do it all with a smile, because it really is fun :)

Up next: The finished photos, and a SUPER awesome giveaway you won’t want to miss!

We love this! Graham, we’ll have to get some copies of all that gorgeous hair and makeup for our ports. :)

Since so much careful prep and hard work goes into producing each editorial feature, one of my very favorite things is giving y’all a peek behind the scenes at how they come together! I hope it offers a taste of why we feel so much satisfaction and joy when we see the final images from shoots, and when we finally hold a magazine in our hands. Today’s peek is especially fun, because it involves CHICKENS! Huge thanks to Blue Ribbon Vendor Anna K. Photography for capturing the day for us!

We had a particularly beautiful day at Serenbe for this shoot, so I can’t complain that it was a little hot. Hair up and (hot pink) sneakers on are always two musts for me on shoot days! Thankfully, our photographer, Ali Harper, lives at Serenbe, so we were able to use her home as a base. It’s always fun to make final wardrobe picks with Molly K. Webb!

Ali’s sweet pup was under foot all day. I fell in love with her :)

Meanwhile, floral prep was also underway at the house!

And across the way, Krista and team were unloading the amazing collection of treasures she had brought for the day.

The table usually comes together slowly, as pieces are held up and considered, then traded out to find the perfect mix…

One of the last things to be done: filling the water and wine glasses! It makes the table look much more authentic :) Once that was out of the way, Ali and our videographer, Teejay, stepped in to document!

Now, get ready for one of the most amazing parts of the shoot, in my opinion. Alison from Sun In My Belly prepared all of the food we were shooting from the back of her car! And it was SO GOOD!! It was mind-blowing to me, and I am eagerly looking forward to the first chance I get to taste her food in her restaurant!

We try to wait for the last minute to bring the models out so their hair, makeup, and outfits stay fresh, but when we do, it sure gets crowded fast!

And then… the chickens arrived!! Or really, just one chicken… and she was NOT happy to be there. But her stay was brief, and then she was quickly returned to her happy home :)

Honestly? I was almost dying of laughter at this point. The whole situation was just so absurd, in the best way possible. Really, though, we were all laughing all day — this was such a great crew to work with! Our last shot of the day was so beautiful — in an open field, at sunset.

Check back in a few hours to see the final result of all this hard work! And BIG thanks again to Anna K. for capturing all of these fabulous images for us!

Sun in My Belly is hands down one of my favorite brunch spots in Atlanta; it has so much character, much like this shoot does. Kudos to the car-cookin’; sounds like a good old fashioned tailgate to me :)

Howdy, friends! We are gearing up for our next round of Southern Weddings V6 editorial shoots, and are hoping some of our local readers might agree to join us this time!

We’ll be in Chapel Hill, NC on Tuesday, July 9. We’re looking for several people for this particular shoot:

– a bride and groom, preferably both blonde
– bridesmaids and groomsmen
– a few young kids (girls and/or boys, ages 4-8)
– an older couple or two

Feel free to nominate yourself, yourself and your husband/fiance/boyfriend, the kids you used to babysit for, or your parents! :) We would LOVE to encourage all hair/skin colors to get in touch! If chosen, we will need you to be available on site from about 1 – 8pm. We might start later or end earlier, but want you to be prepared!

If you’re interested, please send an email to howdy (at) iloveswmag.com with the subject line V6 NC Model Call. Be sure to include a recent headshot (no need for professional photos, we just want to see your lovely face!), a few candids and your height. We promise it’s going to be a blast!
