Nothing says “Southern hospitality” more than opening your home to family and friends, which is why entertaining as a newlywed couple can be so joyful. It’s a great way to connect with loved ones after your wedding, not to mention the perfect excuse to pull out some of those fun gifts from your registry! We know it can also be a little bit intimidating to host for the first time as a married couple, which is why we planned our early Fourth of July potluck with newlyweds in mind every step of the way. We hope our tips will help you organize your plans and host with ease and grace, ending with the ever-so-Southern parting line, “Y’all come back now!”

Thanks to Blue Ribbon Vendor Graham Terhune for these lovely photos – it was so fun to have our gents by our side for this potluck!

Tips for Stress-Free Newlywed Entertaining
1. Let your friends help—a potluck automatically takes pressure off of the hostess! A kraft paper tablecloth and white markers on your buffet table lets guests label their dishes easily.
2. It’s okay to buy pre-prepared foods if you’re short on time. Transfer them to your favorite dishes, add fresh herbs, and you’re all set!
3. Don’t go crazy with details—instead, choose a few easy, impactful projects to focus on. In our case, we pooled our red, white, and blue kitchen supplies for the buffet and displayed a flag pie.
4. A little favor is a great way to make an ordinary dinner feel more like an event. Our blueberries to-go took less than five minutes to assemble!
5. Cloth napkins are not only environmentally friendly; they also look more polished and are better for messy foods.
6. Guidance on what guests should wear is often welcome, and it can be a fun way to keep your whole party cohesive. Our dress code was simply “Fourth of July festive.”
7. Summer is the perfect time to entertain if your home is short on seating—grab a handful of picnic blankets and set up outside instead.
8. Don’t forget the bug spray!

In case you’re planning your own dinner or attending a potluck and are looking for ideas, here’s an outline of how our food spread turned out! We split up main dishes, sides, drinks, and desserts ahead of time and coordinated them through a shared Google doc. Knowing what each person was bringing was helpful for our small group to ensure we ended up with a well-rounded meal, but a larger group probably wouldn’t need to.

Entree: Grilled chicken and sausage
Sides: Watermelon with mint, grilled corn, Mediterranean quinoa salad, spinach salad with berries and pecans, chips and guacamole, crackers and pimento cheese, corn bread
Dessert: Berry cream pie
Drinks: Sparkling berry lemonade

What are your Fourth of July plans? We’d love to hear!

The rooster watermelon bites are too cute! All those little details, the chips cut into stars, help everything really tie together.

Emily and I were chatting about bridal showers on our road trip home from Charleston last week, and we agreed wholeheartedly that they’re one of the sweetest pre-wedding traditions. A beautiful shower is such a fun way to make a bride feel extra loved and special as she prepares for her wedding, which is why we’re excited to share today’s inspiration! A fabulous team of Florida vendors (including our Blue Ribbon Vendor, Ashton Events) designed this bridal shower shoot around the theme of “gingham and bunnies,” which struck a lovely balance between summery brights and soft feminine details. And yes, there were real bunnies involved–adorable!

Thanks so much to Amalie Orrange for sharing this fun shoot with us!

Those bow napkins holders are actually bracelets that doubled as favors–what a sweet surprise for the lucky guests!

From Laura of Ashton Events:

This shoot is a blend of a crisp, clean, and bright palette combined with charming vintage touches. We brought in live bunnies (you should have heard the laughter and delight that ensued!), and also used bunnies consistently throughout the decor. One of my favorite bunny elements was the miniature gold bunnies that guests could put in their teacups at the seed bar! It was a subtle touch, but something fun for the guests to take home.

The menu was comprised of several light and refreshing salads. We couldn’t stop eating the watermelon and basil salad that Good Food Catering made! We also served watermelon and mint slushies–they were the perfect summertime treat!

Most of y’all know that Marissa works remotely for us, traveling around the country (and, when lucky, around the Southeast!) with her baseball playing husband. We love hearing about her adventures on the road, but we’re a little sad that their on-the-go lifestyle means that none of us – not one – have ever met Brandon. Today’s Southern Gent, feature, then, is really a behind-the-scenes peek for us as much as y’all! Please join us in welcoming and learning a little more about Marissa’s mustache-sporting man of mystery!!

Amy Paulson

Name: Branch Kloess
What do you do for a job? Professional baseball player
Your Southern Weddings gal: Marissa
How and when you became a Southern Weddings gent: We had a class together in college, and what started as friendship quickly grew into something more. But, I actually had her from the very first day.

What contributions have you made to SW that people may not realize? I always help on all of the Alabama articles, since that’s my home state, and I’m good at suggesting Southern date nights and fun things to do across the South, since I’ve traveled so much for baseball. I have also served as the inspiration for plenty of Southern gentleman features, especially Marissa’s Southern Gentleman article in V5–see page 287. I also taught Marissa how to tie a bow tie, so I think that counts for something!
What is something you shouldn’t know about weddings, but do, thanks to SW? With Marissa as my wife, I know a lot about monograms. Not sure if that’s from SW or just Marissa.

Have you ever been recognized by a stranger because of SW? No, not yet.
What percentage of your social media followers come from SW? There are a few, but more notably, my mustache had its own Twitter.
What is the best thing about being an SW gent? Press trips! Marissa and I got to go on an awesome one to Key West! My favorite part was the key lime pie.
If given the chance, would you become a Southern Weddings employee? I think it would be a fun experience.
Favorite Southern food? Shrimp and grits!

Wow! What amazing photographs. Your daughter is so adorable hanging out with her daddy. I think it is so cute that he says he had her from the very first day. What a special couple. Many blessings to your beautiful family!
