It’s easy to love Kimberly and Salvador’s joyful wedding pictures–they look so happy and relaxed, just how I imagine every couple wants to feel on their wedding day! What I love even more, though, is how they crafted a wedding that was so meaningful to them. They were inspired by a Bible verse about a deeply rooted tree throughout their planning, which, in turn, inspired a loose theme of roots and growth. What could be more perfect for that than a wedding at the place where Kimberly’s roots are–her family’s (working!) farm? Even the flowers at the backyard reception were in pots, which now decorate Kimberly and Salvador’s newlywed home!

Thanks so much to Michelle Boyd for sharing Kimberly and Salvador’s wedding with us!

I dove into wedding dress shopping with a very specific idea in my mind, and ended up purchasing a dress that I had made fun of the first time I saw it! It took a couple of trips to David’s Bridal, and I was about to give up when I decided that I should try something different. The moment I slipped the dress over my head, I knew I had found it! Soft to the touch, a bit of lace along the neck and hemline, and ruffles down the back of the dress–it was perfect!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? YES! As a wedding photographer myself, I noticed that the “first look” was one of the rare moments that the bride and groom shared exclusively on the wedding day. I decided a long time ago that I wanted a first look at my wedding, and Salvador was definitely on board with seeing me as early in the day as possible! Those moments during the first look were my favorite from the entire day. It was so peaceful, calming, and perfect!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We chose “A Thousand Years” as our wedding song. Music is very important to Salvador, so we came up with a few ideas to make the song sound like “us.” A few of his groomsmen played an instrumental version consisting of the guitar, accordion, and the xylophone as the grandparents, parents, and bridesmaids entered. My lovely bevy of bridesmaids sang the words to the song as I walked down the aisle. It was such a neat moment! All of our guests loved how unique the music was, and we loved it too!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We initially planned to write our own vows, but we ended up going with the traditional ones. We rephrased them to sound more like us, but we really loved the promises originally written.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Psalm 1:3 “He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” When we began dreaming about our wedding, we landed on this verse. We desired for our marriage to be like a tree that is deeply rooted, thriving, and prosperous. All of the details for our wedding stemmed from this idea, and this verse became the words that rooted us down in the midst of planning the wedding!

Picking a venue was really tough for me! I kept going over and over what would make the most people the most happy. My mom and Salvador had to remind me several times that the wedding needed to be about what Salvador and I wanted–not what we thought everyone else wanted. Since we wanted our wedding to center around roots and growth, we decided to have the wedding where my roots started: the house my parents built. It was a lot of work to turn a working farm into a wedding venue, but thanks to my family, it all came together beautifully!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Wedding cake is my favorite dessert, so it was very important that I find THE cake. We did taste tests at several bakeries around town, and I was on the brink of giving up when I found out that some of my friends were starting a cottage bakery. We scheduled a cake tasting, and I knew from the first bite that I had found the perfect wedding cake! We had a vanilla bean cake with rosette-styled frosting, along with two strawberries and champagne naked cakes. Salvador isn’t a huge fan of cake, so we did mini pies for the groom’s table. My family and I made the pecan pies with pecans from our trees, and The Prickly Pear Bakery made delicious apple, peach, and cherry pies as well!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in college, but we didn’t become good friends until we started working together at Hardin-Simmons University. We would go out to lunch together, collaborate on projects, and go for walks around campus to take a break from the office. I always assumed we were just really great friends (even after he asked me out a few times), but Salvador always knew better! Being the patient and persistent man that he is, he stuck around in the “friend zone” for several years, waiting for me to figure out that we were perfect for each other. After I told him (for the third time) that I didn’t think it’d be a good idea for us to date, he backed off. Of course, I started to miss my best friend! I slowly realized that I had feelings deeper than friendship, so I asked him out on a date. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love, and all of our friends were so relieved that we FINALLY got together!
Tell us all about the proposal! We were in Hawaii celebrating the recent marriage of some of our best friends. On the last day of the trip, we collected shells on Hapuna beach, played in the waves, and soaked up one last beautiful sunset. I noticed that Salvador seemed distracted, but I didn’t think too much of it. Most of my friends were convinced that he would propose on this trip, but I honestly didn’t think he would! So I was totally surprised when he stole me away for a few quiet moments by the ocean after sunset. He gave me a box of sand from the beach, which I thought was just a souvenir. It wasn’t until he dropped down on one knee that I realized he had buried a ring in the box of sand!
When did y’all get married? July 6, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200
Describe your wedding flowers. My bouquet was a mix of garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, and billy balls! The bridesmaids bouquets and the boutonnieres were a mix of yellow blooms, and I loved the pop of sunshine they added to the wedding colors! We decorated the yard and tables with a blend of pink and yellow flowers planted in pots. We wanted the flowers to have roots so that they would reflect our theme of growth. We’ve been enjoying the flowers all summer, and I love that our wedding flowers are decorating the steps of our first home together!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our favorite details ended up being the things that we made ourselves. We wanted the details to be unique, reflective of us, and handmade. Salvador built our beautiful backdrop out of picket wood, and it turned out even better than I had imagined! He also cut coasters out of logs (which were hand stamped with our wedding logo–there are lots of perks that come with marrying a graphic designer) as favors for our guests. He also designed our invitation suite, AND he letterpressed our invitations, AND he brushed a watercolor wash over all of them! I made a few signs for the wedding, including the chalkboard menu and the labels for the tea table, and although it might be silly, I was really proud of those signs and loved how they turned out! I also loved the potted plants we used in place of cut flowers for decoration. Our wedding centered around the idea of growth and having roots that run deep, and we wanted the details of our wedding to reflect that. We also planted a tree in my parents backyard at the beginning of the reception!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The food and sweets were definitely Southern-inspired! We served sweet tea and lemonade popsicles to our guests before the wedding started, and we served a heap of Southern goodness at the reception, including biscuits with homemade butter, cool watermelon, and homemade pies. The reception felt like a typical summer evening in the South: good food, good company, a beautiful West Texas sunset, and plenty of sweet tea!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? It’s a tie: the Prickly Pear Bakery and Michelle Boyd Photography!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We had two very memorable moments from our wedding day. The first sight came at just the right time in the day. Salvador and I had both been busy and a bit stressed, and seeing each other made all of that melt away. Those 20 minutes of just me and him were bliss! The moment when our good friend and wedding officiant jumped out from the back end of our car as we were pulling out of the driveway was pretty unforgettable too!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? As soon as you get engaged, spend some time together in prayer thinking about your marriage. Planning a wedding is a stressful ordeal, and having a grounded view of why you’re doing it all is very important. Find a scripture that gives you both peace and lean on those words when everything feels like it’s reaching a boiling point. Remember that a wedding is a celebration, and perfection doesn’t need to be a part of it. And have as many bridesmaids as you want! Even if it is a full dozen. :)
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are both looking forward to sharing every moment of life together! We are so excited that we’re finally married and get to experience it all together!

Y’all, long distance is hard — I mean both long distance relationships and long distance wedding planning. I am in awe of how beautifully Audrey + Jordan’s turned out considering that they planned it while overseas in Asia working for a college ministry AND while they were both five hours apart from each other. Their wedding day came together with what looks like the ease, comfort and elegance of the best Southern soirees. These photos by Caroline Joy convinces us that not only are Audrey + Jordan a gorgeous couple, but that they must also be superheroes.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I went shopping three months before the wedding because for the first 2 months of our engagement, I was overseas and couldn’t shop yet! My mother and stepmother and I went to some stores in Birmingham, found one dress I loved. We made the decision to get that one, but decided to wait and look around more that day. My mom urged me to go to a shop in Hartselle, Alabama, the next day just to look. When I went in, the first dress I tried on was the exact dress I had been looking for! We bought that one immediately! It had a sash that tied around my waist, which matched the ivory dress, but when I went for my dress fitting, I realized it just wasn’t the look I wanted — it was all too white and shiny. I wanted a softer, more natural look so a family friend dyed the sash a tan/light cocoa color and it was perfect!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, we wanted our first time to see each other to be an intimate setting without people around- and it was way more practical as far as picture-taking goes.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our food! We had pulled pork, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, corn pudding, black eyed pea slaw, apple crisp, pecan pies and mint sweet tea with vodka. Our decorations included quilts, hat boxes, mason jars, dough bowls, rustic wooden serving pieces that looked like they came from a barn. And the outdoor barn setting was Southern!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Our cake was two gigantic round layers with a collection of flowers similar to our bouquets on top of the cake. The cake was placed on a giant wooden stand and had a messy buttercream frosting that looked rustic!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met in college at the University of Alabama. I saw Jordan onstage playing music for a college ministry we both were going to. I had a crush on him for a few weeks before we met at a concert. We hit it off instantly and spent every day together after that.
Describe the proposal. We were in East Asia, working for a college ministry there. I had gone to visit Jordan in his city and we were supposed to go to a friend’s house for dinner that night. I was called to go to someone else’s apartment to grab some wine for the dinner. Upon arrival, I found Jordan on a rooftop garden with flowers and candles everywhere. We wrote our names on some Chinese lanterns and were going to set them off, when I found the engagement ring tied to the bottom of one! He asked me to marry him then!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Emotional, peaceful, natural.
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? About 300
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The ceremony began at sunset and we were married under a giant oak tree on my family farm.
Describe your wedding flowers: They were pastel colors- peaches, greens, creams, a lot of dahlias and some berry looking plants. I wanted them to have a wildflower look. I pretty much gave our florist/decorator my wedding invitation from Rifle Paper Co. and told them to use the flowers illustrated. The flowers were tied with some lace, and my bouquet was tied with an old piece of knitted fabric I found at a second hand store.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000 -50,000
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Over-communicate about details to be sure you have everything taken care of and know who is doing what!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Establishing our life together in Birmingham and enjoying each other as husband and wife. We are looking forward to knowing each other more intimately and having more and more fun every day.

Do you ever have those days when you realize you need more words in your vocabulary? I, for instance, get in the habit of saying “awesome” or “perfect” when I could be saying things like “jaw-dropping” and “impeccable.” (Confession: I just used a thesaurus for that last word. That’s how bad it is! They don’t even pop into my head!)

Today, I could have used the word “sweet” to describe Holly + Chase’s wedding, but when I sat back and broke it down, there was much more to the feelings I have about their Alabama wedding. Looking through these photos from Rylee Hitchner makes me feel like I’m home. You know, that feeling you get when you know exactly how long it takes for the water to get hot, where the glasses and spoons are, and the sound of the back door creaking as your friends walk in.

Don’t you feel right at home in these photos? I love that good family friends of Holly + Chase let them use their home to host this wedding. It was also the spot where Chase popped the question, making it one of the couple’s favorite details. “Not only was the home a warm, charming and picturesque piece of art in itself, the family that lives there are the kindest of friends, and their home had truly been a haven to us both at different points apart and then together as we began to fall in love.”

We love how Holly described the Southern elements of her wedding. “I think what makes the South so iconic is it’s preservation of a sense of real community and that was a shining theme in our wedding. More than the beautiful Alabama home, more than the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the background, more than the homemade biscuits and cornbread, the most important Southern element was the way our families, friends and neighbors banded around us, offering their creative talents to make our wedding beautiful.”

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Having known each other for about five years, I don’t know that we would have started dating if we hadn’t bumped into each other several times in the span of a couple days. After those few, fortunate run-ins in the summer of 2010, we ended up spending tons of time together right before Chase left for a summer in Ireland and before I moved to South Carolina for a new job. While Chase was overseas, I made the decision to move to Uganda for six months and, no hard feelings involved, knew we probably wouldn’t date. Somewhere in those fall months before I left, we found ourselves talking all the time anyway. We fell fast, making for a very long six months apart while I was in Uganda! Chase flew to see me for 7 days in March, I got home in May and we were engaged in June. It was the best kind of whirlwind!
Describe the proposal. After I returned from Uganda, I started working at a local shop back in Alabama. Saturdays were usually slow, and one Saturday in particular it was so slow that my boss gave me the afternoon off. When I got off work, my friend suggested that we, along with some other friends, ride out to our friends’, the McMurtrie’s, house to pick blueberries, even though they weren’t quite in season yet. I was glad we were going to our friend’s house because Chase had planned to fish on their pond that afternoon. When we arrived, my friends ran out to the blueberry bushes while Robin McMurtrie and I walked out to the pond where Chase and Robin’s husband Tommy were fishing. When we got there, Tommy excused himself and Robin followed. Chase had slyly captured my Bible and read me a passage of scripture that he and Tommy had been talking about and then told me to read a note he had left me between the pages. It was a little note scribbled on a small piece of notebook paper telling me a few things he loved about me. Then, he told me there was another note in the front page. I flipped to it and saw Chase had crossed out “Holly Hereth” and written “Holly Stephenson?” From there, Chase was on one knee! We walked back to the house where friends and family were waiting to surprise me and to celebrate!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Simple, effortless and joyful!
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? 200
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Well, it was the first one I tried on! I didn’t have much of an idea of what I wanted besides the fact that I wanted something simple with lace. I didn’t even know what to look for on the hanger. My mom actually found my dress. When I tried it on, it just felt like me. After putting on just two others, I was ready to put the first back on. I loved the simple fit, the low back and the scalloping lace over the shoulders.
Describe your wedding flowers: My wedding flowers were actually one of my favorite surprises of the wedding! A sweet friend of mine, Lindsay Rae, offered to arrange them for me. Being such the creative spirit that she is, I knew I could I send her a few photos of bouquets and let her run with it. She made the most beautiful, spilling bouquet for me and the sweetest little arrangements for my bridesmaids, not to mention the boutonnieres for the fellas and the table arrangements.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Our wedding cakes were made by all kinds of loving hands! My friend Grace made the biggest portion of the cake, a delicious spice cake with cream cheese frosting roughly smeared to hold the layers together. Days before the wedding, I started to get nervous that there wouldn’t be enough, so my friend Cassidy helped me make a chocolate stout cake to add to the mix. The cakes we put on display were small and simply decorated with foliage from the landscape. We served guests slices from sheet cakes that no one ever saw!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I think the biggest challenge came in remembering that the purpose of our wedding was to marry each other. Of course I wanted the day to be lovely, but letting go of my ideal in a lot of areas shifted my focus and let me enjoy the beauty, charm and sanctity of it all. After all, have you ever enjoyed something you’re micromanaging? Probably not.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Dancing with my bridesmaids right before we walked down the aisle to Motown in our dressing room, and then dancing with Chase to the same songs at the reception.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Forget every wedding you’ve ever been to, and don’t think about the resources you don’t have. If you have a bride, a groom, a pastor and a few friends or family members who love you, you have everything you need to make the sweetest, most magical and meaningful wedding.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We now live in Nashville where we eat chocolate ice cream every night, listen to all the live music we can afford and love being married! We’re most looking forward to going to seminary in a few years, traveling together and eating big Saturday breakfasts every Saturday for the rest of our lives!
