Every single day at Southern Weddings, the stories of couples who have fallen in love, overcome obstacles, and committed their lives to each other, and the images of the day they became husband and wife, move us. We are infinitely thankful for the couples who share with us, and the talented photographers who make us feel as though we were right there, witnessing these incredibly significant moments in a couple’s story–the moments that they will remember forever. Callie and Jamie’s wedding is extra special to me, because not only do I get to soak in their love and joy alongside y’all in V7 and in today’s post, I also got to witness it firsthand as a guest. And I promise you, their beautiful celebration at RiverOaks Charleston was every bit as magical and meaningful as it looks in these breathtaking images by Nancy Ray, who served as both photographer and bridesmaid on this very special day!

Jamie and I decided immediately that we wanted to plan more for our marriage than for our wedding. The main design inspiration for our wedding came from our prayer for our marriage: that The Lord would cultivate in us a marriage as strong as the oaks and as deep and wide as the sea. We wanted to create a meaningful event that pointed to the Lord and reflected who we are as a couple. We tried to make every decision with deep meaning, as this day was one that we had been looking forward to for so long, and one that we will share with our families for the rest of our lives.

All the jewelry that I wore were family heirlooms: my mother’s emerald and diamond earrings gifted to her on her wedding day from her mother-in-law (something borrowed), my great-grandmother’s diamond bracelet (something old), my great-grandmother’s ring and great-grandmother’s pin on my bouquet (something blue). My something new was my wedding dress and shoes. My mom sewed my great-grandmother’s ring into the inside back of my dress with blue thread, and I also carried my great-grandmother’s sweet pansy handkerchief down the aisle. Selecting gifts for my family as a thank you was an important detail for me, as I wanted to pick out meaningful gifts that would not only remind them of our wedding day, but would stay with them for a lifetime. A gold engraved locket for my mom, a gold engraved pocket watch for my dad, and shotgun shell cufflinks for my brother, along with handwritten letters seemed to be the perfect fit.

What was the weather like on your wedding day? By the Lord’s blessing, it could not have been any more perfect. We had asked so many people to pray for the weather, since everything would be taking place outside and we didn’t really have a back-up plan. I cried multiple times that day, just thinking about how those prayers were answered, and through the weather, the Lord was blessing our marriage. It was sunny, warm, and perfectly breezy.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? Although I had no idea what style I wanted, I knew that I wanted my dress to be timeless and elegant with a small twist. After trying on some dresses in Raleigh, my mom and I drove to Nitsa’s in Winston-Salem. After the fourth dress, I kept asking if I could put on the third dress again. Once I had it on, I didn’t want to take it off. After a few tears from both my mom and me, my mom asked me to list everything that I loved about this dress: the combination of soft lace with tulle, the unique peplum, and the delicate sweetheart neckline. She then looked at me and said “It’s perfect. If you love it, then you don’t need anyone else’s opinion.” In that moment, I promised her what she had been asking me to do, which was not to show anyone my dress except her, my brother, and my dad. It’s a bride’s dream to show off her dress to all of her family and bridesmaids, but this idea that I didn’t like at the time, but agreed to anyways to please my mom, ended up being one of the greatest decisions in my wedding planning process. My closest family, friends, and guests saw me in my wedding dress for the first time as I was walking down the aisle to my groom.

Tell us about your wedding ceremony. Our whole ceremony was thoughtfully planned out and we wanted it to move slowly, allowing us to take in each precious moment. We spent a lot of time with our officiant planning our ceremony and making sure that our main focus was not on us, but on Jesus. Jamie and I chose to have some of our close friends read two pieces of scripture in our wedding: Colossians 3:12-17 and Hosea 2:19-20. We felt these two verses truly captured the way that Jesus has loved us and the way that we hope to love each other: with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. We immediately knew that we wanted our best friend, Courtney Lancaster, to marry us. It was important to us to have someone marry us who truly knew us, separately and together, ugly and pretty, and who could stand up confidently share with our guests what we believed and why we had been called into marriage. Courtney has been my best friend since I was in sixth grade. She was my youth minister, Young Life leader, led Young Life with Jamie, and is the reason that I know Jesus the way I do today.

Since I had a very long aisle, it was important to me that my mom be able to see me walking down the aisle with my dad, so our officiant also asked our guests to wait for my mom to stand before they did. This was such a sweet moment not only for my mom, but also for me when we locked eyes and she watched my dad walk me down the aisle.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We wrote our own vows together, promising each other the same lines with a tiny bit of variation. My favorite lines were “By God’s grace, I will affirm and challenge you in becoming all that God has purposed you to be, and will serve Him together with you as one, giving Him the glory and honor.” In our ring vows, “I promise from this day forward, you will not walk alone. With these words, and with all my heart, I marry you and bind my life to yours.”

Our cocktail hour was held in the front of the RiverOaks house while their team transformed the backyard from the ceremony to the reception. Our passed hors d’oeuvres included Southern treats such as Lowcountry fried green tomatoes topped with pimento cheese, applewood smoked bacon-wrapped shrimp, and smoked maple leaf duck breast. We also served two signature cocktails: a Gulf oyster shooter and Charleston Cosmopolitan.

Jamie and I chose to do a private dinner on the dock so that we could enjoy our delicious meal together and alone before the party began. The view was incredible, and it was one of our favorite moments of the day. When planning our wedding, Jamie and I wanted to be intentional with planning specific times where we could be still with each other and take in all of the moments of our day. We did this at our private dinner, as well as during the communion in our ceremony and at the end of the night when we rode away on the boat before driving to our hotel. After we were finished eating, we joined our family and bridal party at the head table for the remainder of the meal.

Tell us about a way or ways you saved money or cut costs while planning. Flowers for sure! We repurposed the bridesmaids’ bouquets and ceremony florals as centerpieces at the reception and chose to decorate the tables with broken oyster shells instead of large floral arrangements. Because we decided to have our guests seated at long rectangle tables, it was important to us to have low and clean table decorations, in hopes that our guests would be able to have conversation instead of being blocked and distracted with large floral arrangements.

As a wedding photographer, one of my favorite moments of a wedding is the bride and groom’s exit, so I knew that I wanted to make mine extra special! Our exit started at the reception with the last song on the dance floor. We asked the band to play “Last Dance” by Donna Summer and had gold and white confetti shot over the dance floor. I then went and changed into a sparkly getaway dress and we walked through one very long and exciting line of sparklers onto the dock. Jamie and I climbed up in the tuna tower and exited on a beautiful sport fisherman boat. As we drove away, fireworks were shot in the sky!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your love story! Although Jamie and I went to high school together, we were not close friends, but we did have many mutual friends including my best friend, Mary Courtney. It wasn’t until the summer after my senior year (Jamie’s freshman year of college) that we started to spend more time together. When the summer had ended and it was time for me to go to the University of South Carolina for my freshman year of college, Jamie admitted to me that he liked me and wanted to know if we could continue to talk while I was gone. I said yes, and we talked almost every day, continuing to get to know each other. Soon enough, we started dating. After a year at the University of South Carolina, I felt that the Lord was calling me back to Raleigh, so I transferred to NC State. Jamie and I continued to grow closer to the Lord and each other, and the rest is history.
Tell us all about the proposal! After I got off work on Sunday, August 11, 2013, Jamie took me on a surprise date to the NC State Arboretum. We had been there a couple of times together and had been recently talking about going again, so I didn’t think anything of it. As we walked through the gardens, Jamie seemed a little rushed, but he’s normally always on a mission (much like me), so I politely asked him to slow down and walk with me. We walked aimlessly (or what I thought was aimlessly) through the gardens and stopped in the rose garden. He walked us over to “the spot,” turned me around with the biggest smile on his face, and said “Callie.” Immediately, I knew what was happening and began sobbing, saying “Is this really it?” Jamie and I had been dating for four years and had never said the words “I love you” (instead, we would say “I like you”), so I knew this moment was going to be one that I would remember forever. After saying many sweet words and telling me that he loved me and has loved me for a long time, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said YES! Jamie then told me that there was another surprise, and I turned around to see Nancy and Will Ray jump out of the bushes with their cameras. After many hugs and more tears, they took us around the garden to do a mini session as an engaged couple. It was probably one of the hottest days of the summer, but we didn’t care, because we were finally engaged! After we left the Arboretum, Jamie told me we were “going to get dinner,” but then, he took me back to my parents’ house, where all of our closest friends and family were, to celebrate!
When did y’all get married? May 3, 2014
Tell us all the basics of your wedding! Why did you choose these things? Did any of these details hold special meaning for you as a couple? Since I am a wedding photographer in Raleigh, NC, I am very familiar with all of the wedding venues and have worked many of them multiple times. I wanted to get married somewhere that I didn’t consider “my office” and that would be particularly special to us. I grew up and lived in Charleston for a brief time, and the water and beach have always been a special place to both Jamie and me, so when I texted him one day telling him “It would be a dream to be married in Charleston” and he responded with “I will marry you anywhere,” I knew we could make it happen. We began researching wedding venues in Charleston and through a friend’s recommendation, we found RiverOaks Charleston. From their website, it perfectly matched the vision in our minds–beautiful mossy oaks, the river, outdoor space, and a design process that allowed us to create something from scratch. It was the only venue I looked at, but I knew that it was where I wanted to marry Jamie. We wanted to cultivate real relationships with the people that we would be working so closely with on our most important day, and with Marianne and her team at RiverOaks, we had just that.

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about marriage? Jamie and I will be living in Raleigh with our new silver lab puppy in our newly renovated home and continuing our dream jobs! Since we got engaged, Jamie and I have been most excited about living together, doing life together, reading the bible and praying together, and not having to part ways at night. Now that we are married, these are our favorite things about marriage! We are truly a team and each other’s biggest support!
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Remember that your marriage is more important than your wedding. Make all of your wedding decisions together from deep within your heart. All of our wedding details and plans were thought through with deep meaning, which we believe made our event as special as it was. Lastly, journal throughout your engagement. I decided to keep a journal where I would write to Jamie periodically telling him how I was feeling and why I want to marry him. After nine months of filling that journal, I gifted it to him on our wedding day. It fills my heart with great joy when I come into the kitchen and see Jamie sitting at our kitchen island, reading his Bible and my journal early in the morning.

    Oh. My. Word – this is just precious! I love all of the heartfelt details like the handwritten vows, the journal, the fireworks (who doesn’t want fireworks?!).     Callie and Jamie’s day is my favorite wedding that I have ever seen. I am inspired by the way that they put the focus on Jesus, glorifying Him in all of it. Their intentionality in soaking up the day and being present is so wise, too. From the broken oyster shells to the beautiful bouquets, monogrammed suspenders, and peacock J. Crew gowns, I am smitten with every detail and am so glad y’all featured them!

Out of everything that is magical about the South, we believe that the feelings of hospitality, graciousness, and belonging are what captivate people the most. We adore biscuits, sweet tea, and groom’s cakes, there’s no denying that, but even without a single one of those things, a wedding can be characteristically Southern simply by the way people feel as soon as they walk through the venue doors. Andrea summed it up perfectly when she described her and Erick’s Nashville wedding: “We had people from all over the world, most of whom did not know one another. We ate, drank, danced, celebrated, and felt like family for one night. I’m so thankful that the South I know is filled with a spirit of sharing life stories and experiences, mutual acceptance of differences, blended families of relatives and friends, dancing, delicious food, and fun.”

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My younger sister went with me to the White Room on a Saturday, without an appointment. We looked through every rack and on the last one, I found the dress. I instantly knew it was the one I wanted, and begged the lady there to let me have a dressing room for a very brief try-on, but everything was booked. Serendipitously, someone called and canceled their appointment at that exact time. I got to try on the dress and fell in love, but the neckline went down to my belly button and I’m a little more modest. I bought it anyway, along with some extra fabric to fill in the neckline. When the dress came in, it came without the fabric. The White Room assured me we could get it in time, so I waited. Luckily, they have the best seamstress in the world, Tu Holman–she only had three weeks to take the dress in several inches, hem the bottom, replace beads, and create a new neckline. Five days before the wedding, my mom and I went to pick up the dress, and she had done beautiful work, but it just wasn’t what I had envisioned. My sister and best friend went back with me three days later and we stayed past midnight at the seamstress’ house until we had the top right. I’m so thankful for Tu and her insistence that we get the dress right, no matter how long it took, because on my wedding day, it was perfect and I loved wearing it.

There was an amazing Southern spirit at our wedding. We had people from all over the world, most of whom did not know one another. We ate, drank, danced, celebrated, and felt like family for one night. I’m so thankful that the South I know is filled with a spirit of sharing life stories and experiences, mutual acceptance of differences, blended families of relatives and friends, dancing, delicious food, and fun.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? It was the only place we could agree on! I liked all the small, rustic, restaurant venues, and Erick liked all the big, industrial venues. We walked away from touring Sambuca and both said, “We could get married there.” It was perfect and we love that we can go back there for dinner every year on our anniversary.

When I was in Rwanda, I worked for Monique Lasdosz (Nanny, as we all call her) at the organization Widow’s Might. She started a craft workshop, along with several other business startups, for the widows and orphans of the 1994 genocide. We employed the craftspeople to make place card holders, drink stirrers, and our cake topper. Along with Nanny’s presence at our wedding, these details were extremely special because of the significance of our meeting and our heart for Africa.

We had a two-layer Italian cream cake with raspberry filling, ivory fondant, and gold art deco accents. The topper was intertwining giraffes made my artists at a craft workshop in Rwanda.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Erick is Rwandan, and ten years ago, I spent a summer working in Rwanda. The woman I worked for, Monique (Nanny) was good friends with Erick. She introduced us (with Erick’s girlfriend sitting next to him) and we had an instant connection. Lucky for me, the girlfriend was on her way out, so Erick and I hung out for the rest of my stay, but knew it wasn’t likely we could make a relationship work. We kept in touch and literally chased each other around the world. I started traveling around the world with the intent to go back to Africa, and Erick moved to the States. I returned from my trip six months later, and Erick’s job moved him to Guiana. A few years later, he moved back to the US and came to Nashville (where my boyfriend was sitting next to me). A few years and a breakup after that, we decided we had to make a relationship work. We did two years long distance between Nashville and Boston before Erick made the move South. We were soon engaged in October 2013 and married on October 18, 2014.
Tell us all about the proposal! Erick and I had been talking about getting engaged all summer. However, in September, my older sister got engaged, which was a welcome surprise to the whole family. Their engagement made our plans a little less immediate in every one else’s eyes. One day in October, Erick suggested “we spend the whole day together.” I had my suspicions, so I got dressed and planned a fun day. We went to Arrington Vineyards, shared wine, had wonderful conversation, and left without getting engaged. As we were leaving, Erick asked if I wanted to go out to eat. I was a little let down and neither of us was very hungry, so we decided to just go home and watch a movie. Once we were home, I hurried into my pajamas, made popcorn, and settled onto the couch. That’s when Erick walked over, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. It was private, without makeup or fancy clothes, in our home, and it was perfect. Then we proceeded to call my parents with the surprise of wedding number two scheduled for 2014!

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 40 for the ceremony and dinner, 80 for the reception
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We had beautiful elements all around, but we kept it reigned in and as simple as possible. Also, we knew we wanted a small and intimate ceremony, but to celebrate with all our friends, so we had only 40 people at the ceremony and dinner, and then had a great dessert and dancing reception with all our friends afterwards.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Focus on your relationship and marriage, and let the professionals handle the details. It was so much fun being a guest at my own wedding. I had zero stress because I had zero control, but I knew the people in charge wanted the best for us and I was paying them to do a great job without my help.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We plan to keep our day-to-day very much the same–working, playing with our dog, cooking dinner, hiking, reading, and being best friends. We look forward to working on our house and yard, visiting Rwanda, growing our friendships, and welcoming children whenever that happens.

I can only imagine how much Haley and Dylan’s wedding from V6 inspired not only countless brides, thanks to the bright color palette and unique design elements, but also, many Southern grooms, thanks to the delectable-looking bacon bar! This fun Charleston wedding is a feast to the eyes, as well as a fabulous representation of Haley and Dylan’s self-proclaimed “over the top” personalities. They chose the bold colors and details to reflect their belief in living life to the fullest. Considering how much fun it sounds like everyone had, I’m sure the night was a wonderful reminder of this for their guests as well!

A Charleston Bride does such a great job with florals, I didn’t have to give much direction. Our flowers were bright red, pinks and corals, and most were displayed in a variety of gold containers. They were a mix of spray roses, cymbidium orchids, tulips, dahlia, hydrangea, peonies, ranunculus, celosia and lisianthus.

Being in the wedding industry, I always wanted to choose a time of year that was considered “off-season.” However, Dylan proposed in November and I didn’t want to wait until the winter of 2014, so summer it was! Lowndes Grove is my most favorite spot in Charleston, so there was no doubt with that choice!

We chose our ceremony music based on the music we both loved, and we were okay with not being super traditional. We chose a string duo to play some more modern songs. I walked down the aisle to “Imagine” by John Lennon and we recessed to “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles. Our officiant was also the president of our college–it was very important to us for him to be included in our big day. He is the most inspirational speaker and was very special to us.

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Our cocktail hour was on the front lawn of Lowndes Grove. We served a specialty cocktail made of champagne, St Germain, and brandied cherries. The glass was rimmed with edible gold glitter! The weather was absolutely perfect and the sun was just starting to set on the Ashley River.

What was the design inspiration for your reception? To put it mildly, we are pretty over-the-top people. Dylan and I love making a statement and we wanted the room to be filled with color and truly embody us as a couple and how we live our lives to the fullest. With the help of our planner, Melissa, we chose a palette of red, pink, and metallic gold! We also wanted the lighting in the tent to be insane–Technical Event Company used a mix of amber uplighting and gold chandeliers to really amp up the natural beauty of the plantation.

Who was your favorite vendor and why? Melissa, our wedding planner. She really kept us sane the entire time. Her attention to detail is unrivaled and I had never met someone more organized than me until I met her! I rarely meet someone that can fully read my mind (especially when it is going in a million directions) but then rein me in at the same time. I remember at one point she said, “No Haley, we cannot have a fully gold confetti wall, edible gold glitter, gold cakes, gold chandeliers and a gold dance floor”–and sometimes I needed that!

What kind of food did you serve? Custom hors d’oeuvres were passed along with oysters on the half shell during cocktail hour. Chef Nico Romo of Fish Restaurant catered an entire custom menu based on our favorite meals and family recipes. Some of our favorites were “Dylan’s Bacon Bar” that included pork belly sandwiches, “piggy pops,” and even bacon-infused bourbon. We also served fried catfish and gravy with horseradish mashed potatoes, which is a staple in the Harper home! My parents wrote a cookbook together based on family recipes, so it was important to us that we shared some of our favorites with everyone. Having amazing food was probably most important thing to us. That is one of the reasons we chose Lowndes Grove–so we could use their caterer!!

We chose to have three different cakes! All were beautifully done with various gold designs. My favorite cake had gold polka dots and a fondant bow that mimicked the bow on my wedding dress. We had three flavors: chocolate with honey buttercream, lemon with passion fruit mousse, and raspberry jam and almond cake with cinnamon cream cheese.

Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration: “Hold hands, look both ways and stay together.” My dad said this in his toast. It is something he has told me since I was a little girl and I never realized until that night how important it really was.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Dylan and I met mainly because my college roommate and one of my best friends had a huge crush on him. While I was out of town one of the first weekends of our freshmen year of college, he and his friends decided to play a prank on her! I came home to a completely turned upside down room–drawers flipped upside down, sheets off the bed, and everything a complete mess!! The next time I saw him, I told him he was never allowed in our room again. Our love story is definitely a little slower–we started as inseparable friends and our foundation is based on that friendship. It wasn’t until a year later that we decided to take that risk of turning our friendship into something romantic. After that, we never turned back.
Tell us all about the proposal! Dylan told me that we had a work dinner to go to at one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston, Charleston Grill. We arrived about ten minutes late. They served us a glass of champagne and let us know that our party was late as well, which seemed odd to me. We were escorted to the courtyard area, and not a minute later, Dylan was down on one knee asking the most important question of my life! He had also booked a photographer to capture every moment of the proposal! I wanted to call my parents immediately, but Dylan told me that he had a surprise outside and to not get on the phone. I was then surprised by my very best friend and maid of honor, Ashley, and our best friend Clarke on rickshaws draped in string lights with a “JUST ENGAGED” sign! The rickshaws then drove us to Fish Restaurant, where we were greeted by family and friends. It truly was the most magical night and we’ve never felt so loved!
Tell us about your beautiful engagement ring and how/why your husband (or the two of you!) chose it: I always thought I knew what I wanted in an engagement ring, but found I was so wrong when I actually went and tried them on! Dylan ended up getting a ring made for me that included some family stones, which made it very special for us. It is a five-stone round diamond ring, and it is stunning! My wedding band is all rubies and family stones from my grandmother. Dylan’s wedding band is a gold band engraved with lyrics from our wedding song, “The Best is Yet to Come,” and our wedding date.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Fabulous, romantic, unforgettable.
How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding? 180
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? My wedding dress was beautiful, and the second I tried it on, I knew it was the one. My mother, mother-in-law, and one of my friends came dress shopping with me over Thanksgiving, and our last stop was Maddison Row. Lindsey, the store manager, made me feel 100 percent comfortable throughout the entire process and we still see each other often. My favorite part of my dress was the horsehair bow with lace ends that was around the waist. We also incorporated this design on our cake.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We used a mix of traditional and contemporary vows. We thought it was important to focus on the words and what we were promising to one another, so we worked really hard to make sure each line was something we would and could live by for the rest of our lives. Our favorite line was “All that I am, I give to you and all that I have, I share with you.”
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? My mom gave me her penny that she wore in her shoe for good luck the day of her wedding.
What was the most memorable or touching moment about your wedding day? The morning of my wedding, I started the day having breakfast alone with my parents. Being both only children, this was a big day for us! Afterwards, my dad dropped my mom and I off at Lowndes Grove to start getting ready, and not much later, I received a flower arrangement with a note that read “I love you, Ms. Harper!!! Love, Daddy.”
Did you toss the garter or bouquet? Yes! We had too. You don’t see it too much at weddings anymore, but I swear, it is the most fun part! Something funny always happens. At our wedding, Dylan totally missed everyone during the garter toss, so he had to do it again!
Tell us about your grand exit. We had a sparkler exit, which I think always looks the most magical in pictures! Then we left in a 1966 red Pontiac GTO!!.
What was Southern about your wedding? We are both from the South, so we definitely included some Southern traditions. Dylan gave his best guy friends monogrammed rocks glasses with our wedding date and bourbon and coke in a cigar box. Dylan’s fraternity brothers did their traditional “round up,” which is where they basically all sing in a circle and pour beer on one another. We nixed the beer throwing for our wedding though! During the ceremony, my dad walked me down the aisle, Dylan’s dad was his best man, and we both had a house party instead having a bridal party. My high school girlfriends and I have a hanky that we are passing down with our new initials on it to wrap around our bouquets. I was the second person to use it and it was really special. Before the ceremony, we opted not to see each other at all–I think that may be where all the nerves came from, but it was so worth it once the doors opened and I walked onto the front lawn at Lowndes Grove.
Did you take a honeymoon? If so, where? We decided to go to San Francisco and wine country. Dylan and I are total foodies and love a great glass of vino. We wanted to go somewhere that would get us out of the heat a bit and allow us to really enjoy our time together.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Two things: have a welcome party, even if it is something small or a get together at a local spot. It really helped us make our rounds and say hello to everyone so we didn’t feel pressure on our big day. Second, hire a planner. They make your life way easier throughout the whole process so that you feel 100 percent carefree during your wedding week and while you are away for your honeymoon.
