I love a couple who can tell a great story. Geneva + Luke are wonderful at this, making me burst into laughter in the office when I read the adorable story of how they met (it was in elementary school and he called her “maggot”), how he proposed, and the importance of big Southern hair. From looking through these photos from Suggs Photography, I’m positive their guests went home with wonderful memories and stories to share, too. G + L’s outdoor ceremony was not only lovely, but added a few laughs to the program. Their tented reception was complete with an artist on hand to live-paint the couple’s first dance — tres romantic, especially with the backdrop of string lights around the Oldfield Plantation house!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Luke and I decided to meet before the ceremony to help “hug out” some of the nerves. But good heavens, no, we didn’t do a first look. Luke did not see me until I descended the staircase escorted by my father. In our partial first look, Luke was blindfolded. I would have been willing to be blindfolded too, but I just could not risk messing up my hair, and that’s just the honest truth. This coif was a work of art, two hours in the making. And not even an army of bobby pins could protect her from a blindfold. We shared a hug, some kisses and two big ol’ grins. What a sweet, sweet moment, and what fantastic pictures!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Luke and I decided to write our own vows. Both of us are fairly good with a pen and we wanted so much for our wedding ceremony to be truly personal. By writing our own vows, we were able to share more of ourselves with our guests. It gave them a peek into the type of relationship we have and want to continue to build with one another. We did not practice these vows or share them with one another prior to the ceremony. It’s funny, they were remarkably similar.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We chose to use a modern version of “The Seven Blessings” for our ceremony. It was perfect. In fact, several guests contacted us afterwards for a copy of this reading.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. “Heavenly Day,” a country folk song was used as the processional. It was sung beautifully by a friend of the bride. Guitar accompaniment was provided by a friend of Luke’s.“One Voice” by the Wailin Jennys (another folk song) was sung in four-part harmony by my oh-so talented bridesmaids! While this played, a candle was lit, and the fire was passed from guest to guest via small beeswax pencil tapers. What a symbolic way to show support and love for the new couple!

The location of our wedding was as Southern as country ham and red-eye gravy! Our ceremony was set against the backdrop of an old Plantation River House, complete with spiral staircases and enveloped by live oak trees. The reception was held on the back lawn of the house overlooking the salt marsh of the Okatie River. Guests could stroll out onto a sprawling wooden dock to catch a glimpse of the moonlight shining across the water. Our food options were eclectic with hints of Southern inspiration. We served collard greens, rosemary grits, beef tenderloin, corn casserole, apricot salmon and more. And who could resist the adorable passed hors d’oeurve of pimento cheese on a gingersnap! YUM!

I was just absolutely in love with big lush Juliet roses in blush. Our florist blended those with creamy round ranunculus, succulents and bupleurum for a romantic, yet whimsical look. The flowers were arranged in vintage blue mason jars wrapped in twine.

Without a doubt, the best detail of the wedding was our talented artist, Elizabeth McKeever, who literally painted a scene from our first dance as the night unfolded. Guests were able to watch her create the scene in real time. What a blessing to have found her, and what a treasure we now have in our home! It’s a tremendous keepsake of the sweetest four minutes of our lives.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Ours was a vanilla cake with fresh blackberries and homemade lemon curd filling with buttercream frosting. Our baker offered the option of combining three flavors, but after we tasted the fresh blackberry and lemon curd, we couldn’t imagine anything better! I was going with a traditional tiered cake with tons of interesting texture. (The bottom layer had ruffles!) The cake was used as a centerpiece at the reception, so I wanted it to be beautiful. The texture was created with metallic ivory fondant.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Luke and I met in 1991 walking home from elementary school. He was the older brother of my childhood best friend, Amanda. Back then he had curly hair and glasses. I was red-headed, freckle faced and all knees and elbows. For about ten years, I was a permanent fixture at their house — I went on family vacations with them and everything. Rumor has it that Luke referred to me as “the maggot.” After moving away in eighth grade, I didn’t see Luke again until about ten years later at Amanda’s destination wedding in Jamaica. A huge smile spread over my face as I watched him board the plane. Although we were all grown up now, there was something so familiar there and a face I knew so well. When we de-planed in Jamaica, I leaned over the balcony, waved and shouted, “Luke Baxley, wait for me!” He just stood there confused. He was smiling, but definitely had no clue who I was. After a few seconds (and a little help), he figured it out. Then he smiled like a six year old on Christmas morning, dropped his bags and gave me a huge hug. We were inseparable that weekend. The chemistry was impossible to deny. Maybe it was the fine Jamaican rum in those bottomless pina coladas, maybe it was the romance of watching his sister get married on the beach at sunset — whatever it was, we couldn’t stop talking and didn’t stop laughing until we parted ways in the airport on the way home. The very next weekend, I flew down to Baton Rouge to see him, and we have been together ever since. We were long distance for the next two years as Luke finished his residency, and I finished school. But let me tell you, being together was worth the wait.
Describe the proposal. The proposal according to Luke: “Don’t ask. I had it all set up and laid out. It was going to be on the exact one year anniversary of when we got off the plane and ran back into each other (down to the exact hour). I knew exactly what I was going to say and everything. Then as soon as Geneva and the ring were in the same place at the same time, I couldn’t wait any longer. I got excited and proposed in the kitchen.” What Luke didn’t tell you, is that after he proposed in the kitchen (which was so sweet and adorable), he freaked out about having “blown the proposal.” I think the first words out of his mouth were, “I don’t even have any champagne!” So I let him re-do it five days later with his original plan. I gave him the ring back and we went out to dinner at an incredible restaurant. At the end of the meal (in front of the waiter) he got up and walked around the table and got down on one knee (again). I said “yes” (again). Partially because of the free dessert, and partially because of the awesome idea, we decided to plan a re-proposal dinner on our engagement every year and live the moment all over again.
In what month did you get married? April
How many guests attended your wedding? 135
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: My fabulous MOH set up the dress shopping appointments for me in Charleston. I knew the moment we stepped into Modern Trousseau on King Street that we had found Mecca. The aesthetic of this boutique was stunning — exposed brick juxtaposed against preppy white couches and blue floral wallpaper. We oohed and aahed through the collection of Southern-meets-modern stunners. Like all brides, I needed my wedding dress to embody so many things. I wanted sexy, classy, unique, sophisticated with a hint of vintage all in one. Lo and behold, there she was, sitting coyly on the first rack. Monroe: a fit-and-flare French lace dream. I could not get over the blush colored satin underlay that gave this dress a warm glow. The large lace pattern was unlike anything I’d ever seen, almost retro. A sweetheart neckline and drop V back made this classy gown look very, very sexy. It hugged my figure in all the right ways. This dress was made for my body, and it was just the sample! The actual dress was indeed made for my body, along with a matching bolero, which I chose to wear for the ceremony. The seamstress, (bless her, wherever she is) even stitched my initials in blue onto the inside.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We had a tough time getting an accurate head count. The cost of our food was per person, and I was also trying to finalize escort cards with the calligrapher. So, it was stressful trying to track folks down in the final weeks without losing my manners. In the end, we had far fewer guests than we anticipated, mostly due to out-of-towners. We invited 215, and had 135. My saving grace to this dilemma was Luke’s sister, Amanda, who was, bless her heart, more than happy to make about 20 phone calls for me.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000 – $50,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our wedding planner! Jen Leiti of Embellish Events was absolutely critical to the success of our wedding day. Without her help and guidance, I would have never been able to execute my vision. Most importantly however, on the day of the wedding I didn’t have to worry a smidge about any of the details. Luke and I knew that our big day was in the hands of a true professional. We just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our ceremony was really sensational. It was creative and intimate. We involved so many of our talented friends for music. Luke’s sister wrote and recited a beautiful prayer. We had perfect weather. And most of all, everyone we cared about was literally sitting seven feet away! I think everyone in attendance laughed a little and cried a little. The groom was drop dead sexy. What more could you ask for?
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t just pick wedding colors… pick wedding feelings!! We were hoping to create an intimate, romantic, relaxed and memorable day. It helped inform the choices we made, from the bridesmaids dresses to the dinner music to the fire pit!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Luke and I are looking forward to “going on adventures,” as we call it! We hope to take a few more international trips before settling down and breeding baby Baxleys.

Oh heavens, y’all! There are so many details in Lindsay + Jonathon’s Texas wedding that I am so completly smitten with. First, let’s start with the monogram appearances; from Lindsay’s “getting ready” shirt (we love these from our friends at Memento), to her fabulous cowboy boots, and then on to their married monogram runner mixed into the reception. Complete Southern heaven for this monogram-loving gal! And as a fellow non-cake-eater, I love how L + J had bowls of Jonathan’s favorite sweet, Sour Patch Kids, for guests to nibble on in lieu of a groom’s cake! I cannot guarantee a few of those little suckers wouldn’t have ended up in my purse!

Special thanks to Kelly Hornberger for capturing the sweetest moments (and the monogram details)!

Check out Jonathan’s Texas cufflinks! Love the ode to their home state!

My mom and I had a blast finding my dress. We only went to a few places, tried a lot on but definitely knew that the lace dress I picked was the one. My mom was so amazing in helping me. I definitely could not have done it without her! I did make a few alterations – made the neckline a sweetheart and took the back down a bit, into a deeper V shape.

Walking over to the ceremony site with my dad and then turning the corner and seeing Jonathan at the end of the aisle was truly magical.

This may be one of my favorite ceremony images of all time. Such an incredible moment of love and family!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Deuteronomy 6:5-9
“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

There were so many Southern touches, including my new monogram on custom made cowboy boots, the burlap table runners, the wooden stumps for décor used as our cake stand and under our placement of flowers and candles, our signature drink served out of mason jars, Jonathan’s Texas cufflinks, the wooden benches and tables, and of course our food! Our guest book was a “cookbook” I made from all of our favorite family recipes. I included lots of pictures that involved friends, family and cooking and also left a lot of white space for people to sign. We also had “late night snacks” towards the end of the reception that included fried chicken and waffles and a French fry bar, complete with toppings to choose from!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Our wedding cake was five-tiered with a big flower on top and it was on a wooden stump as the cake stand.
For the “groom cake’s,” Jonathan actually doesn’t like sweets except for Sour Patch Kids, so we had little bowls throughout the bar and reception of Sour Patch Kids for people to snack on, complete with heart-shaped spoons, too!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Initially, Jonathan and I met through mutual friends at a party, but we didn’t start dating until about a year and half later, when the timing was right.
Describe the proposal. The proposal was absolutely amazing! Our photographer actually captured that, too (here). Jonathan has played classical piano since he was four, loves to sing and has been playing the guitar since for about 10 years as well. He is so talented! Our first date was at the Hobby Center in Houston where we saw the Phantom of the Opera. On our two year anniversary, Jonathan told me that we were going to see a play at the Hobby Center but that we were getting to meet the cast and see a rehearsal beforehand. When we walked in the theater, I was shocked that besides the people working in the sound booth, we were the ONLY people in the theater. I asked Jonathan where everyone else was and he told me it was a private viewing just for us (massive points!). As we take our seats, the lights start to dim and they call “all cast to stage,” the show is about to start. Jonathan turns to me and says that “they forgot the champagne” and that he will go get it. I think, “champagne, too!?!” As I’m sitting there alone, waiting for Jonathan to come back and the show to start, I hear the first notes of a familiar song on a piano being played. The curtain goes up and there is Jonathan on stage, singing and playing our favorite song! I start tearing up and then basically sobbing and am in absolute shock. Close to the end of the song, a woman comes and gets me and tells me to follow her. She then takes me on stage to join Jonathan. He finishes the song, he stands and takes both of my hands and says the sweetest words, and then he reaches back into the piano and pulls out a small box, gets down on one knee and asks me to marry him! It was SO AMAZING! And that was just the beginning of the night.
In what month did you get married? April
How many guests attended your wedding? 150
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did not do a first look. Jonathan really wanted to keep the tradition of seeing me for the first time, walking down the aisle. I was perfectly OK with that!
Did you write your own vows? We did! We said the traditional vows but also wrote our own. My favorite line of Jonathan’s vows to me was, “I vow to love you forever with my whole heart and with everything that I have. This will be the easiest of my promises because there is absolutely no other way I could love you.” Jonathan’s favorite line of my vow’s to him was, “The man I thought I would marry absolutely pales in comparison to the man God has given me in you.”
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. Walking down the aisle, walking back up the aisle, first dance? One of our good friend’s, Thad Lang, played all of our ceremony music on his acoustic guitar. He played “I Have Always Loved You” by Third Day while guests arrived, and also some music he wrote himself. “Air in G String” played while the wedding party walked down the aisle and “Cannon in D” when I walked down the aisle. He played Dave Matthews, “Everyday” when we walked back as man and wife – that was so fun. Our first dance was the same song Jonathan played and sang to me on our proposal, Sister Hazel’s “This Kind of Love.”
Describe your wedding flowers: Absolutely gorgeous! Romantic, lots of whites, ivories, garden roses, pops of deep pink and lambs ear for green. We also had all white petals as our aisle.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: There are way too many! My favorite detail about the ceremony was our prayer circle – it was so unique and amazing to feel the love and power of being surrounded by our friends in prayer. For the reception, I have to say our monogrammed, burlap-inspired table runners that my sister-in-law made. Absolutely amazing!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Food was a big part of our wedding because it is a passion of ours. Other details included the truffle popcorn we served out of paper cones and our signature drink served before the ceremony, Mint Rosemary Lemonade. My brother also designed a logo for us to use on all of our signage. We had koozies with our logo, Styrofoam cups, napkins, rally towels for the end of the night and dancing, framed pictures of the two of us scattered throughout the reception, and my dad made hand painted directional signs, too!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We are so blessed in that we didn’t have too many! Honestly, I think the biggest scare or challenge was whenever my dress came in and it was too short. They had to do massive alterations and that was pretty dramatic — but it all worked out!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000 – $50,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Jonathan would say the lighting and I would have to say, of all things, the transportation. We provided buses for everyone and I am so glad we did! I think it really contributed to people staying the entire time and “partying” a little more since they didn’t have to drive. Plus, I heard our friends had a very entertaining bus ride home – singing songs and rapping over the microphone.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The feeling and emotions of it all! I was so calm and so ready – walking over to the ceremony site with my dad and then turning the corner and seeing Jonathan at the end of the aisle was truly magical.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Jonathan put a “moratorium” on any wedding planning/talking for one week when we first got engaged. His intention was for us to enjoy being engaged and to focus on our love and each other and we carried this throughout the planning period. Don’t get caught up in the details of one day and one party. Focus on your love and your marriage to come. Plus, you are only engaged once! Have fun being fiancés while you can!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? To enjoy our first year of marriage to the fullest! We want to do a lot of traveling and “firsts” as a married couple. We certainly are looking forward to building our home together and a family!

The way Mike proposed to Christie is similar to my dream proposal — simple, heartfelt and a little nod to how far they’ve come. I just adore that Christie was lucky enough to be able to wear the ring that was a part of Mike’s family for generations. How special is it know knowing that the ring on your finger was also a part of many love stories before yours? In my opinion, their gorgeous blue wedding was just the icing on top of the cake! We love these images from Tracy Timmester — especially how she makes biscuits look so buttery and delicious, even on a computer screen.

Check out more of Christie + Mike’s wedding in their video by Thomas Bowen right here!

Raise your hand if you love Christie’s bouquet ribbons! I adore the colors and textures. It matches perfectly with her flowers!

There was no question about who I wanted to do my wedding flowers. Holly Chapple is an amazing artist and I am so blessed to call her a friend. It is so important to let your vendors have the creative license to do what they do best: design. I asked Holly for pretty, soft, romantic flowers and let her take it from there. What we ended up with was so much more than I could have ever dreamed of. They were lush and romantic with tons of hydrangeas, cabbage roses, and delphinium.

I wanted finding my dress to be a really special day, so I decided to only take my sister and my mother with me. We found the dress at the same shop (Betsy Robinson’s) where my sister found her dress. I fell in love with how elegant it was and the detailing on the flower. Before we were done, I had to add one signature touch – the ivory satin ribbon tied into a bow in the back made the dress perfectly me!

Both Mike and I felt strongly that we wanted the first time we saw each other to be when I was walking down the aisle toward him; that moment is so powerful and special. I am so happy we stuck to our guns on not seeing each other before the ceremony. Our guests got to share in the genuine emotion of the moment we saw each other. When I got to the end of the aisle, we were both all smiles.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We love the beauty and tradition of the Catholic ceremony so we used the traditional vows. Our absolute favorite part is where we promised “to love and honor each other all the days of our life.” We really try and live that vow every day.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Sirach 26, 1-4. 13-16 This has been one of my favorite Bible passages my whole life. It sums up who I hope to be as a woman and as a wife. Philippians 4, 4-9 — This reading reminded us that God is at the center of our lives and should be at the center of our marriage. The Gospel was Matthew 22, 35-40 — My absolute favorite reading. When it all comes down to it, all we need to remember is to love God with our whole hearts, minds and souls – and try and love each other in that same way. It’s simple and profound.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The most important aspect of our wedding was that Mike and I wanted our guests to walk away from our wedding feeling like they were treated to the best Southern hospitality and are surrounded by lots of love! I knew that I wanted to focus on making sure our guests had the best experience for our wedding weekend. We chose a location that would be great for our big families and vendors who we loved as artists and people. That Southern hospitality began with our welcome bags. We included a personal note in each bag and stuffed them with two family favorites, candied pecans and Grandma’s lemon pudding pound cake, both baked from scratch in my mother’s kitchen! When guests arrived at cocktail hour, they were treated to our “Southern Charmer” cocktail (a champagne mint julep) and shrimp and grit fritters. Dinner included a candied pecan salad with goat cheese and red wine-braised short ribs with home-style mashed potatoes and cornbread. The late night Biscuit Bar was perfect for all of our guests who had literally been on the dance floor for hours. Our personalized signs helped guests load up fresh biscuits with all their fixings. I also wanted to honor all the special women in my life in some way, so I wore a little memento for them on the wedding day. My engagement ring was an heirloom from women in Mike’s family, I wore my great-grandmother’s earrings, carried a handkerchief hand-embroidered by my grandmother, my pearl necklace and bracelet were gifts from my mother, and my sorority badge was pinned to the inside of my dress.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. The amazing organist at my church agreed to learn the Wedding Processional from the Sound of Music AND he brought in a trumpeter to make it extra special for my entrance. There was not a dry eye in the church! That movie was very special to my grandmother and me. We used to watch it together all the time when I was a little girl and it brings tears to my eyes every time I hear how regal and beautiful the song is. Our first dance was set to “Making Memories of Us” by Keith Urban. The song talks about everything we want in our marriage – to honor each other’s families and to spend a lifetime together making incredible memories. My father-daughter dance was extra special. My dad and I danced to Josh Turner’s “I’ll Be There.” The lyrics of that song perfectly express what every parent hopes to be for their child, and what my dad and mom have meant to me over all these years. Mike and his mother’s song was “Young at Heart” by Frank Sinatra which perfectly captured their playful and fun relationship!

Whoa. How delicious does C + M’s biscuit bar look? We’re not surprised that it was a total hit and C + M’s favorite detail of the wedding.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Mike and my brother Kevin have been friends for years, but I never got a chance to meet Mike. I remember when I finally did run into him at a golf course, I spent almost a half hour joking around with him and thinking how funny he was! My brother ended up setting us up on a date, and after that, Mike and I were pretty much inseparable. (You know you have a great guy when your baby brother gives it a thumbs up!) Mike is funny, kind, and makes me so happy, so of course I was thrilled when he decided to propose!
Describe the proposal. On our first date, Mike invited me over to his house and cooked me an amazing meal. Over the hours that we spent talking, I started to realize just how kind, funny and sweet he was — not to mention a fabulous cook! For the proposal, he recreated that first date and then we took a walk around the neighborhood. He got down on one knee right at the spot where we had shared our first kiss and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. He gave me a beautiful ring that has been a part of his family for generations. I am so honored to wear that ring and to be a part of such an incredible family!
In what month did you get married? March
How many guests attended your wedding? 171
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: The wedding cake was absolutely delicious! We went with two flavors, Viviacious Vanilla and Caramelicious. Most guests had a slice of each because it was so yummy!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Mike and I have so many special people we wanted to share our wedding day with, so keeping the guest count down without leaving out important friends was our biggest struggle. We decided to remove a few design elements in order to make sure that we could accommodate all of those people in our budget. In the end, we were so honored to have so many of our friends and family travel in from all over the country to be with us on our wedding day.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? We were in the $25,000-$50,000 range.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The band! We had the BEST TIME EVER dancing at the wedding thanks to Snackbar Jones. The energy they brought to our celebration made all the difference in the world I really don’t think I have ever seen a dance floor that packed for every song of the night. Our guests left raving about how awesome the music was.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? We had the most amazing toasts at our wedding. Mike’s brother, my sister, and my dad were sweet and so funny! My dad had saved a Father’s Day gift from my childhood – I gave him a book of coupons good for a hug, a kiss, and a silly dance. At the end of his speech, he ripped out the coupon for the silly dance and traded it in for our father-daughter dance. I will never forget that moment!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? The best advice I can give is to hire a wedding planner! I have no idea what I would have done without the support of the planning team. My family was able to spend time with me and Mike instead of having to run around to check on the details and put out fires. Consider your planning team an insurance plan for one of the most important expenses and days of your life!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are having so much fun settling into our new home together and getting used to calling each other husband and wife! We can’t wait to start a big family and are so excited for all the fun milestones to come.
