It’s not always easy to tell how a wedding day must have felt through the pictures alone, but that is not the case with Britt and Ren’s lovely Georgia wedding. There is such a calm and joy in these images, which makes me wish I could have been a guest and seen it all in person! Thanks to long communal farm tables, a charming country venue, and simple, sweet decor, Britt and Ren managed to make their 400+ guest wedding feel relaxed and intimate–no easy feat, I’m sure. I especially love Britt’s recollection of their most memorable moment, as well as the pictures that captured it all so beautifully!

Hugs to Paige Jones for sharing Britt and Ren’s day with us!

Last December, we took a visit to Ren’s family farm in South Georgia to drop off some wood and check on the property. As we walked around, Ren led us to his favorite field (mine too, now!) where he stopped to give me an early Christmas present. He pulled out a beautiful Anthropologie houndstooth coat from his backpack and told me to try it on. Inside the pockets were two tickets to New York for the next morning! I was pretty distracted by all the excitement, but the next thing I knew, Ren was down on one knee. Of course, I said YES to forever with my very best friend!

My dream Southern summer wedding post is coming up later today, but if I can update it already, I want to include this gorgeous bouquet! It’s perfect!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Our pastor from our church in Oxford, Pat Ward, officiated our wedding beautifully. I felt like it was just the three of us up there as Pat spoke to us about Christ in the center of our marriage and our lives together. My favorite part was taking communion together, and then Ren and I served our wedding party and family communion while the musicians played “Live Forever” by Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our awesome photographers, Paige and Michael Jones, stole us away for a few minutes to snag a couple pictures in the dwindling light. I loved having just a few moments alone after the ceremony and first dances were over. Paige told us to walk down the road a bit, so Ren and I raced each other there. It was just a sweet, sweet moment!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We chose to get married at a beautiful horse farm just a mile away from where Ren grew up .We had a Southern food buffet that included macaroni and cheese, collard greens, cornbread, biscuits and sweet tea! Did I mention the huge communal farm tables?

This macaroni and cheese food truck can stop by my apartment any day–I don’t think there could possibly be a cuter way to get my favorite Southern comfort food!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, of course! We didn’t want to be confined by tradition and tried to make all decisions about the wedding based on what we truly wanted to day to be like. Ultimately, we wanted it to be sweet, intimate, and very relaxed. It was a definite yes to hang out together beforehand and spend as much time as possible on the dance floor post-ceremony!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I love the variety of desserts we had. The cookies were made by my sister’s best friend’s new business, Jimella’s Bakery. They were so fun and colorful.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We first met in middle school, where we became fast friends. We stayed very close friends over the years, and despite Ren’s many attempts, we didn’t start dating until our junior year of high school. We went our separate ways in college, Ren to Ole Miss, and I to UGA, but then decided sometime junior year that not being together was no fun. We did long distance until graduation, when I moved to Oxford to pursue painting and Ren worked for Young Life and a local restaurant. We just wanted to be together in a town we loved. Life ended up bringing us back to Atlanta where we were engaged and married.
When did y’all get married? June 8, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Around 400
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. It was really a little too easy. I was initially looking for a delicate, lacey, beaded number. I found several that I loved at the first boutique we went to in Atlanta, but they were a little out of my price range. A couple days later, some girlfriends and I decided to stop by a little shop close to our hometown of Milton. As we picked out our favorites, one of my friends broke away from the sheaths to look at the A-lines, which I was avoiding. She found her old wedding dress from a year ago, and picked out the dress hanging next to it for me to try on. I tried that dress on last and it was the easiest decision of the whole wedding—we were all in love!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? This was something we talked a lot about, but ultimately chose not to do. I love the idea and if we had had a smaller wedding, we would have done it without a doubt. I was just too nervous to do so in front of 400+ people!
Describe your wedding flowers. The most beautiful creations I’ve ever seen! Lush and sherbert-y.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? To forget about everything everyone else was saying and do what we wanted to do!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Enjoy being engaged, it flies by! Focus on the big things that are important for you and your fiancé. The rest of the details don’t matter!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are just soaking up this busy, fun time. We’re loving settling in to our new home and learning how to love each other deeper and know each other better as newlyweds!

Traditionally, I love to talk about the sweet details I find within the interview portion. Like how Sara had her late father’s signet ring as her something old, or how she wrapped a piece of one of his old madras shirts around her bouquet. I’m a sucker for sentimental details, and believe me there is no shortage in Sara + TJ’s interview. But today, I absolutely can’t stop staring at the colorful fun in each and every photo from Katelyn James! Once you scroll down a bit, I’m sure you’ll understand how I feel. Stripes, monograms, navy + pink! Even striped bouquet bows! Y’all, Sara + TJ’s wedding has me wanting to don my best collared shirt, pearls and some khaki shorts just to look at this pretty day!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Something borrowed: my grandmother’s lace handkerchief, something blue: navy striped shoes, something old: my dad’s signet ring, something new: my earrings.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I went to Bella Rosa, a store in Richmond, with my mom, TJ’s mom, my maid of honor and three bridesmaids that were local. I had a pretty good idea of what I was looking for—something simple and classic. My dress was the first one I tried on and the rest is history!

With the help of my mother-in-law, we did all of the flowers for the wedding. She did all of the table arrangements and I tied my bouquet and the bouquets for my bridesmaids. My bouquet had the most beautiful coral and white peonies and it was wrapped with a piece of one of my dad’s old madras shirts, so it was especially meaningful. The bridesmaid bouquets had sunset roses, a variety of pink garden roses, coral and white peonies, and white hydrangeas and were wrapped in navy and white striped ribbon. Navy and white stripes is my most favorite color…it should be a color.

I cannot agree more, navy + white stripes should definitely be a color!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did a first look because we wanted to be able to get lots of pictures together, while not missing out on celebrating with our guests. Also, seeing each other before the ceremony calmed both of our nerves!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I loved the flowers and all of my navy patterns! TJ absolutely loved his shoes!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our location at Main Street Station in Richmond was pretty Southern, in addition to the classic, preppy feel of our wedding. Lots of stripes, patterns, and color. I think the relaxed, welcoming and fun atmosphere is a hallmark of a good Southern wedding.

A mama’s girl myself, I love how Sara had her mother walk her down in the aisle in the absence of her late father. They’re smiles are so radiant!

We had one reading from Nicholas Sparks’ book The Wedding: “But love, I’ve come to understand, is more than three words mumbled before bedtime. Love is sustained by action, a pattern of devotion in the things we do for each other every day.”

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. TJ and I met the summer after our freshman year of college. Our parents live about five minutes away from each other and we both happened to get jobs at the new restaurant down the street, Max & Erma’s. We went to neighboring high schools (our county is big) and we had similar friends, but we never knew each other. We worked together for a few months before we started dating. In August, we both went back to college—he in North Carolina at High Point University and I in Harrisonburg, Virginia at James Madison University. We had a long-distance relationship until I graduated and moved back to Richmond to attend grad school at Virginia Commonwealth University. TJ had transferred there a couple of years before. We dated for seven years before we got engaged!
Tell us all about the proposal! For my birthday, TJ planned a picnic at a winery about an hour from Richmond (King Family Vineyards), which is one of my favorite places on Earth. That Saturday morning, it was pouring and I kept saying we could reschedule for better weather, but TJ insisted and so we headed to King Family. After a tasting, TJ went and got the picnic basket that he had packed. We started to lay all of the food out on a picnic table since it was too wet to sit on the grass. A group of older adults walked into the tasting room and TJ asked if one of the gentlemen would take our picture. As he started shooting, TJ got down on one knee—and it was captured on camera! Since it was my birthday, we were going to meet up with one of my girlfriends that night in Richmond, as I thought no one else was going to be able to celebrate my birthday with me. Little did I know, TJ had planned a surprise birthday party and all of my best girlfriends were there to celebrate. It was one of the best weekends of my life!
When did y’all get married? June 8, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Around 150
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We didn’t write our own vows, however the ceremony was deeply personal, as it was officiated by TJ’s childhood pastor, who also happens to be the father of one of his best friends.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to The Piano Guys’ version of A Thousand Years. We recessed to “Everlasting Love” by Natalie Cole—something fun and upbeat to get the party started. Our first dance was to “Whatever It Is” by Zac Brown Band, one of our most favorite bands. For our “Mom’s Dance” (my dad passed away when I was 10), we danced to “In My Life” by The Beatles, as it was one of my dad’s favorite songs and a way to remember him. We also made sure that “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show was played, as it is one of TJ’s favorite songs and our group of friends goes nuts over it.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had cupcakes from Pearl’s Cupcake Shoppe, a local favorite. There were five flavors and all were delicious!!! Red velvet, scrum-delicious (chocolate cake filled with peanut butter whip frosted with butterfinger buttercream and toffee shavings), vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, vanilla cake with chocolate frosting, and strawberry cake with fresh strawberry frosting.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? I think the guest list was one of the biggest challenges. We would have loved to invite a lot more people than we did, but the space had a limit on the number of people allowed due to fire code.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Without a doubt, I couldn’t imagine our wedding with having Katelyn and Michael there. They were absolutely fantastic. Their easygoing spirit was a blessing and the images that we will have forever are spectacular. I also LOVED the navy and white striped runners. My mom made all nine of them and they were exactly how I envisioned them to be.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Being able to celebrate with all of our closest family and friends is something that we will never forget.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take lots of deep breaths and simplify. I had a massive pinterest board, or ten, for our wedding. One day, I got so overwhelmed with all of my ideas that I just had to delete a bunch of pins and focus on what was important. It’s easy to get wrapped up in little details, but that isn’t what matters.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We plan on living in Richmond and tackling some DIY projects on our house, hanging out with our pups Millie and Rex, and enjoying married life.

From electric blue wedges hidden under her classic gown to an open-air photobooth that proved to be a “photo bomber dream” (her words, not mine), Laura + Chad’s wedding at the Oldfield Plantation seems like it was a complete blast! I mean check out the photo of Laura and her daddy getting down on the dance floor – pure fun! I’d be remiss not to mention the gorgeous clear tent strung with twinkling white lights because I know Nicole is loving them as much as I am! Be sure to read Laura’s “most memorable moment” in her interview, because it might not be what you’d think!

Thanks to Heidi from Our Labor of Love for sharing this fun soiree with us!

You can’t get much more Southern than blue suede wedding shoes!

I knew without a doubt I wanted to wear blue shoes. Deciding which pair of blue shoes to wear, however, is a different story.  Balancing my love of high heels with the fact that I would be walking down a flight of brick stairs during the ceremony and on grass during most of the reception proved to be quite difficult.  Finally, I opted to go with electric blue suede wedges.  I loved that they provided a unique and unexpected twist under my otherwise traditional dress, while simultaneously serving an incredibly functional purpose!

Did you decide to do a “first look”?  Yes. On a personal level, we welcomed and embraced the opportunity to share a calm, private moment before the ceremony and reception whirlwind began.  In addition, it made logistical sense.  By doing a first look, our extraordinarily talented photographer, Heidi and her team were able to maximize the best light of the day and the high tide of the river to capture many incredible shots that would have otherwise been impossible had we waited until after the 5:30 pm ceremony.

My hand-tied bouquet consisted of white hydrangeas, white freesias, white polo roses, and green cymbidium orchids. The bridesmaids had bouquets of white hydrangeas and white freesias. Chad’s boutonniere was made of green cymbidium orchid and the groomsmen’s boutonnieres were white freesia. For the ceremony, we had ferns with white Asiatic lilies. At the reception, our centerpieces were made of white hydrangeas, white lilies, and assorted white flowers in palm leaf-lined vases. The reception napkins had white dendrobium orchids

Y’all, I’m a sucker for a fellow in saddle shoes or oxfords as my husband calls them! So dapper!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? When my veil snagged itself on the bricks as my dad walked me down the steps during the ceremony! We didn’t realize it was caught until it actually started to pull my head backwards and almost caused me to loose my balance. Luckily, my dad had a strong grip, we were able to free it from the bricks almost immediately, and after a deep breath or two, everyone (myself included) exploded with laughter. The snafu was a blessing in disguise – it broke the nervous energy and reminded us all to relax and have fun!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t allow yourself to get burdened by the details.  Also, as our “most memorable moment” story clearly illustrates, no matter what, something will always go wrong, but in the end, it will be fine.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The clear tent strung with twinkling white lights, which gave us the ability to look up and see the trees and stars after dark.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: It was essential our cake tasted as good as it looked, so we chose three tiers of red velvet cake with whipped cream cheese filling and vanilla butter cake with vanilla butter cream filling and homemade vanilla custard.  The flowers on the wedding cake were handmade edible sugar replicas of the polo roses in my bridal bouquet.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding.  Our selections were traditional songs throughout the ceremony played by a solo harpist.  We wanted the music to compliment, not overwhelm or distract from, the natural beauty and surroundings of Oldfield Plantation.  Once we were ready to celebrate, we started the evening with very Southern-traditional South Carolina Shag, which got all of our guests, young and old, up dancing immediately!

Describe the proposal. (From the groom) Laura and I had just gotten back to her parents’ home after a nice dinner with her parents and a large group of family friends.  Even though it was pretty late at night by that point, I asked if she would like to go on a walk. After some convincing that it wasn’t that cold out, she reluctantly agreed.  We walked to the brick patio of the River House, where weddings are frequently held on Oldfield Plantation, the gorgeous low-country community in which her parents live.  I knew Laura always wanted to get married at this exact spot so I dropped to one knee, asked if she would, and the rest is history.
In what month did you get married? October. It is the perfect time of year for an outdoor wedding in the low country.
How many guests attended your wedding? 124
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  It was surprisingly easy. I found my dress on the first day that I (along with my mother, a couple of close family friends, and my maid of honor) went dress shopping.  Initially, I pulled vintage-inspired lace dresses since I thought that style would be best for an outdoor wedding.  While the dresses were beautiful, we all agreed they weren’t right for me. The wonderfully accommodating bridal consultant, Flo at Bridal’s by Lori, then convinced me to try something different and brought in a stunning Rivini satin fit and flare gown. It was unlike anything I had tried on before, but I knew instantly the classic, refined, timeless (and comfortable!) dress was perfect. On my wedding day, the dress looked flawless paired with my mother’s pearls!
Did you write your own vows? We pieced together our vows and ceremony with the help of our officiant in order to make them special and meaningful.  One of the most meaningful aspects of our ceremony was that we actually exchanged our vows on the exact spot that Chad proposed to me.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Our long time mutual best friend and bridesmaid Megan read Blessing for a Marriage, by James Dillet Freeman.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration?  What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding weekend was filled with Southern details and activities, all set under the picturesque live oaks and Spanish moss on the banks of the Okatie River. To kick off the weekend, our family and friends joined us for our rehearsal dinner, a traditional Low Country Oyster Roast. The day of the wedding, while the guys headed out for a morning of shooting targets on a nearby sporting clays course and hunt club, the ladies enjoyed a relaxing bridal luncheon complete with Diet Coke in glass bottles (my favorite). The most Southern of all though was our food! We had the ultimate “Southern with a twist” menu. Chef Jason with Oldfield Plantation truly went above and beyond our wildest expectations and created a phenomenal meal that literally left our guests raving for months. The delicious menu included (just to name a few) shrimp and grit wontons, fried green tomato lollipops, low-country oyster shooters and, of course, Southern style chicken and waffles.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Planning and coordinating an entire weekend of wedding activities and events while I was living and working full time in Atlanta and Chad was living and working full-time in Charlotte.  We couldn’t have done it without the help of our incredible friends and family, especially my parents!
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? An open-air photo booth!! To this day, looking through the photo booth pictures causes us all to laugh until we cry.  By setting up the photo booth facing the river and completely open without any walls or backgrounds, it enabled our guests to have a lot more freedom to hop in and out of each other’s pictures, embrace the spontaneity of the photo booth, and encourage one another to be silly. The open space was a photo bomber’s dream come true!
