Caroline + Chaz love picnics and couldn’t think of a better way to spend time with their nearest and dearest than by recreating the summer activity. It was especially appropriate (and downright sweet) for Caroline, whose grandmother was a quilting pro and even had one of her creations presented to Eleanor Roosevelt! We are absolutely in love with the laid back atmosphere, delicious boxed meals and adorable lawn signs reserving quilts for the Mr. and Mrs. After enjoying the dining experience on the lawn, guests partied the night away (yes, even with a special playing of “Call Me Maybe”) until the newlyweds made their getaway in Caroline’s dad’s antique Porsche.

Did you have a cocktail hour? Right after the ceremony, Chaz and I went to take some sunset pictures, which we LOVE, while everyone else went to cocktail hour. We served some Southern classics: spiked Arnold Palmers, mini cucumber sandwiches, mini pimento cheese sandwiches, and mini BLT’s. Maybe one of our favorite parts of the whole day was that during the beginning of cocktail hour we got to eat dinner, just the two of us. Our planner had set up a table in a building adjacent to the Plantation Home where cocktail hour was taking place. We got the opportunity to talk about the wedding ceremony and everything that had happened that day. It was wonderful to get to spend time just the two of us, and I would highly recommend it to any couple!
What was the design inspiration for your reception? We really wanted something casual, Southern, and fun. We actually had never seen a picnic reception before, so this idea shockingly wasn’t from Pinterest. Boxed dinners were cheaper than a seated, plated meal, so everything worked out perfectly! We did provide enough tables for everyone in case people weren’t comfortable on quilts, but we were so glad that, although untraditional, most people joined in!

The one aspect of our wedding that we’ve never seen anyone else do was the picnic reception. It was exactly what we wanted: delicious, casual, and budget-friendly! It was also very special to me because my grandmother on my dad’s side was a quilting pro! She worked on a quilt with some women in Kentucky that won the 1933 World’s Fair Sears Quilt contest. The quilt was sent to the White House and presented to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt to keep, and there is now no record of it. Before she died, she recreated the quilt and we are so proud to have it in our possession. The quilts on the grounds of Carnton reminded me so much of her!

Tell us a bit about your first dance. While our first dance didn’t go at all how I had planned, it was definitely the most hilarious moment of our wedding. We told the DJ, who was wonderful in every other aspect, that we wanted to dance to “At Last” by Etta James. When we got out to the dance floor for our first dance, this crazy version of “At Last” starts playing. It’s not even Etta James, it’s some horrible live version. I think Chaz realized that I was horrified, so he made it his ultimate goal to make me laugh. We were cracking up our entire first dance. It wasn’t the moment I was expecting to create, but it is definitely a fun and memorable one!

What kind of food did you serve during the cocktail hour, dinner and dessert? For dinner, we decided to have a picnic. All throughout the grounds were quilts that my mom and our families collected from friends, laid out for people to picnic on. We had boxed dinners that were delicious! They had gourmet fried chicken, grilled veggies, a tri-bean salad, potato salad, and a fruit skewer. To drink, we offered fruit tea, a Nashville favorite, sweet tea, water and then a Nashville beer called Yazoo Pale Ale. Maybe the most Southern thing at our entire wedding was the biscuit bar. Our caterer made so many delicious mini biscuits: buttermilk biscuits, cheddar biscuits, herb biscuits, and sweet potato biscuits. She also brought tons of different toppings: fresh creamery butter, honey butter, apple butter, strawberry preserves, apricot preserves, and raspberry jam.

Describe your wedding cake: Our cake was alternating layers of a very light lemon and amaretto Italian wedding cake. It was out of this world. When you cut into the cake, it made yellow and white stripes, just like everything else at our wedding! We wanted to have a special “cake” for Chaz because his birthday was the day before our wedding. He decided on another Southern classic: banana pudding. We put all of the little individual banana puddings in my grandmother’s old pie safe. My loving parents lugged it all the way to the plantation just for this moment. I loved it because it felt like my grandmother got to be there. And it was adorable!

Describe your centerpieces: The quilts didn’t require any centerpieces, they were beautiful on their own! Each table had an ivory linen and a burlap square on top. Most of them had antique books that were both in our color scheme and whose titles were about love. We also included blue mason jars with flowers, and milk glass with flowers. Some tables just had these huge apothecary jars full of lemons and then a ribbon tied around them with a label that I designed that said, “Chaz and Caroline, June 16, 2012.”
What were some of the highlights? Chaz and I love nothing more than dancing with friends, and it was so much more fun dancing at our own wedding. I specifically remember watching Chaz dance his heart out to the songs “Scrub the Ground” while getting lower than I’ve ever seen him go before. I also requested some songs for particular friends, like this summer’s classic “Call Me Maybe” for one of my best friends, Vasilisa. One thing that we did differently than most is we had a last dance. Since we were going to Mexico for our honeymoon and we love the band Jump Little Children, our last dance was called “Mexico.” All the couples got to join us on the dance floor to close it off right before our final send off.
Did you try anything new or untraditional? The picnic idea was both new and untraditional. So was the biscuit bar and the banana pudding.
Did you toss the garter or bouquet? I tossed the bouquet, but after talking about it, both of us weren’t looking forward to the awkward “finding of the garter” (where did this tradition come from?!), so we decided to skip it.
Tell us about your grand exit. Our exit was SO fun! We started at the front of the house and walked amidst trees and people lining the walkway all the way to my dad’s antique Porsche. It’s always been my dream to drive away in his Porsche that we rode in as kids. I’m glad Chaz could drive it (this stick shift in particular is near impossible to navigate) because he worked for years in high school as a valet.
What was the biggest challenge you faced when planning your wedding? My parents were really generous to us with the wedding. They gave us a budget, and said that if we wanted to spend less than that, we could save the rest. Since we’re currently paying for Chaz’s medical school (not a cheap route), we tried to cut as many corners as we could. While this was probably the biggest challenge we faced, it was almost like a game. We continually checked to make sure that we couldn’t shave off any money anywhere. I am glad that even though we were very budget-conscious, we made sure to include all of the things that were important to us.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? It’s been a huge time of transition for us. I just graduated from college, we got married, and then we headed to Savannah for Chaz’s medical school rotations. We have a lot to look forward to both individually and as a couple. I just started a new job at Southpoint Media, a web design and development firm here in Savannah. I’m also starting a new paper line for invitations and stationary, Caroline Fausel Paperie, while also free-lancing as a graphic designer and continuing my music career in Savannah. Chaz had really enjoyed his rotations so far and is looking forward to graduating medical school soon. We’re excited to see where Chaz’s residency program takes us, and are hoping to get the opportunity to explore a new city in the Southeast.
What advice would you give to someone planning his or her wedding? Pick the top things that are important to you about your wedding day. Plan your budget around those things. The most important aspect about the planning is attitude. We kept saying to ourselves and each other, “If at the end of the day I’m married to you, I’m happy.” In the end it’s not the small details that matter, but the fact that you’re getting married!

Em said to me yesterday as she was putting the images in for this post, “Nicole, you are going to love this wedding.” The bride called it a “turquoise and Southern backyard pizza party,” so I knew I was going to be a goner once I saw the photos! Y’all know I love me a fancy and formal wedding once in awhile, but I find that I relate much more closely to Angela + Tom’s personalities. For them, the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of married life was through a casual party in the backyard of their friend’s home and a creative spin on tradition. (Y’all make sure you read the story behind Angela’s adorable dress!)

We’re sending big hugs to Riverland Studios for sharing A + T’s big day with us!

Describe your wedding flowers: Beautiful and natural. We used white hydrangeas, creamy garden roses, lisianthus, white ranunculus, herbs and scented geranium.

Did you write your own vows? Our life coach, Keith Sudano wrote most of them and I edited and refined them. One of my favorite parts was, “Marriage is a commitment to God. It is an opportunity to feel the joy of taking care of someone who takes care of you, to be challenged towards growth yet gently nurtured, to love deeply and receive it in return. It is about trust, friendship and having a partner to share all life has to offer. It is a place to evolve; so that you can go out in the world and make a difference by spreading the joy and wisdom that you have found with each other. Together in this marriage, you shall contribute more fully, for you both shall be more full.”

I had always loved my mother’s wedding gown but it was a little too ‘70s for me and the entire top was stained yellow due to age. Not to mention, my Mama was a size 2 and they had to take it in! I thought it would never fit in it but then I met with Caroline Baker of Maude Couture and she sent several drawings over. After a few meetings and some amazing design work on her part, I got a shortened, very BHLDN-esque version of my mother’s dress and an awesome (envision Carrie Bradshaw) skirt made from the bottom part of my Mother’s dress. It was one of my FAVORITE parts of the wedding and I’ll wearing both the dress and skirt 100 times over! It’s not just a wedding dress look.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We had both recently moved back to Charleston, SC and we’re modeling in Charleston Fashion Week. I was backstage talking to a group of people and Tom walked up to introduce himself. We saw each other thereafter at gatherings because we had mutual friends. Tom was always such a Southern gentleman…polite, courteous, well-mannered, and just plain sweet. We were friends and I enjoyed seeing him out in circles. We talked about yoga, books we were reading, fashion and life. Sooner rather than later, we had our first date, which was sushi at his house. Previously, I had been talking to one of our mutual friends and Tom about wanting a vintage pair of black cowgirl boots. That night, our first date gift, he gave me a vintage pair of black cowgirl boots that fit perfectly! I knew he was a keeper!!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? Sweetgrass baskets, seersucker bowties and cowgirl boots!
What was Southern about your wedding? Everything the location with the big oak trees on Wadmalaw Island, the local beer from Westbrook, the brick oven pizza from Crust in Columbia with all local ingredients and the down-home family feel of the entire affair.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Mosquito-worries and weather. I always hoped it would be beautiful and it was!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Everything! There were so many intricate details, but I guess the theme of our “turquoise and Southern backyard pizza party” is our favorite detail.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: It was a vanilla cake with salted caramel and dulce de leche creme from Wildflour.

Describe the proposal. It was on a weekend getaway to Cashiers, NC. We had just come back from canoeing and were having some snacks. Tom asked if I wanted some candy. I said, “No, I’m good.” Then he said, “Angela, just open the bag!” and there was the ring!
In what month did you get married? November
How many guests attended your wedding? 50
Did you decide to do a “first look”? No, we didn’t. However, at the last minute, standing in my turquoise corduroys and Ugg boots directing friends and vendors of our wedding day, Tom saw me. But he never saw me in my dress until I walked down the aisle.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We did the Hands Ceremony and read Numbers 6:24.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. Our friend played Spanish acoustic music on his guitar.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Photography!!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The vows and talking to family and friends right after.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Listen to your family and friends but ultimately do what makes your heart flutter. I knew I wanted brick-oven pizza and searched high and low for a vendor. Everyone was worried about transit from another city, but it worked out! I also knew I wanted to get married in a short dress and wear boots at the reception. My dad never liked the idea of a short dress, but the idea grew on him and ultimately, I was happy with my decision.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? I see surfing in a tropical place in our future! We are hoping to honeymoon this year but right now we are just enjoying life together. John’s Island is where we call home and we love it!

Ooh! Events is a delightful member of our Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory!

I love a good party, y’all, but I also love being surrounded by only people I truly love and cherish. For Emily + Michael, keeping their wedding small was a challenge that was worthwhile and turned into their favorite memory of the day. “We wanted to feel relaxed on our wedding day and enjoy everyone present. It was incredibly important to us not to compromise that. Having a small wedding allowed us to have many memorable moments. We did not feel rushed nor did we feel like we were entertaining. We really had time to enjoy and appreciate each person there.”

We just love that these photos from Jeff Hall make us feel just as relaxed as E + M wanted their celebration to be.

My wedding dress was more of a work in progress than anything. Both the dress and the shrug were made by friends. The dress design was a compilation of my favorite aspects of several dresses I had seen. It was really cool to see how my vision evolved. I love every piece of that dress. It has so much story, from the fabric to the broach to the shrug. Each element is precious to me and I know exactly where it came from.

I was so pleased with our wedding flowers. A dear friend of ours did all of the flowers. I gave her a picture of what I had hoped for and she made it happen well within budget! I wanted something that had an old-fashioned feel using the eucalyptus, wheat and whatever pink hues she thought would work. They turned out beautifully!

Did you write your own vows? We didn’t write our own vows. I think that is one of the few things we left to tradition. We used the Marriage Liturgy from the Episcopalian Book of Common Prayer and that had everything we needed to say. I remember those words from every wedding I had ever been to, so being able to say them myself was important.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Michael’s brother read Corinthians 13.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. My very best friend played the fiddle before and after our wedding and she wrote a song for us.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We really couldn’t choose. Everything in the wedding was hand-picked from thrift stores, borrowed, handmade or already in our collection of stuff. Each item was touched by someone we love and it all had a story. Our families and friends were so supportive and helpful in making every detail come together. We couldn’t have had a more meaningful wedding as far as all of the details go.

I love the photo below ridiculous amounts. I love that with a small wedding, a group portrait isn’t out of the question. This is one that I would hang in my home for generations.

I feel like there was so much that was Southern about our wedding. To begin, the Southern location, South Carolina Table Rock is just gorgeous, especially in the fall. The park itself has so much history and really is one of South Carolina’s great gems. The food was no exception. Barbecued pork, cornbread, cole slaw, mac ‘n’ cheese, drinking beer out of mason jars, sweet tea and lemonade! It was all Southern as far as the food goes! Another Southern element we had was that all the ladies were given lovely vintage handkerchiefs before the ceremony.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Michael and I met through our best friends years before we ever began dating. In those years, he was a nomadic rock climber (very much the bachelor) and I was a single mom. Needless to say, we were at very different places in our lives. Years later, we all reunited over a few beers and great memories. I gave him my number, he called, and five years later we married!
Describe the proposal. It was the coldest night here in South Carolina in December. He asked me to come into the backyard with him and look at the stars. It must be love because I obliged, though I detest the cold! Right there, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. I said “of course” and then “can we go inside?” I was so cold and I couldn’t see the ring! It was simple and perfect for us.
In what month did you get married? October
How many guests attended your wedding? 55
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Yes we did. We thought it would be a great way to settle into the day, just to see one another and hang out before the ceremony. It was really sweet, too, because my son and our moms were there and the pictures turned out so well! Michael and I are both very happy we made the decision to have a “first look.” It was a very special part of the day and it really made everything afterward so relaxed and natural.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: We went with pies. Many of our guests baked and we had about ten different pies.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Making decisions was my biggest challenge. Although I knew what I wanted, I was overwhelmed by the details and how to make things happen. The women in my life really helped with that. I looked at the people I knew who were excellent planners and I told them to tell me what to do and I did it. No questions asked.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The wedding itself. We feel that having a wedding and spending that amount of money on one day is such a luxury! Michael and I went back and forth as to whether or not we should have the wedding celebration. We are so happy we chose to celebrate in the way we did! I wouldn’t trade the entire experience for anything. It was the perfect way for us to begin our lives together with our precious family and friends.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Just try to keep perspective about what this day represents for you as a couple.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? There is no telling what’s next! Our son will be in high school this year so that will be an experience within itself. Michael and I have learned that life has its own plans for us at times and we hope to handle it all as gracefully as possible. We do enjoy a good adventure every now and then. Maybe we’ll add a baby!??
