Megan + Steven’s wedding at The Stockroom in Raleigh was as delightful as their ceremony! While Megan and her mom were the creative geniuses behind the details, A Joyful Occasion coordinated the big day. Catering by Design took care of the food — and man, did their menu sound delicious! The beautiful monogrammed cake was designed by Ambrosia Cake Creations, and the flowering branch, peony, and rose floral arrangements were by Dogwood Tree Floral. One of the most special details? Megan’s (gorgeously monogrammed) reception dress was made by a dear friend, Joslyn Chase! Nancy Ray was, of course, the talent behind the lens.

But you want to know what my favorite detail from Megan + Steven’s wedding was? The BISCUIT BAR! Megan got the idea from SW V3 (see the whole shoot here!), but put her own spin on it. I love that her mother-in-law sewed all the take-home bags! Don’t have an amazingly talented MIL? We’ve put together a shopping round-up debuting this afternoon which will help you whip up your very own biscuit bar. We’ll be back in a flash!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: To be honest, the dress was not my first priority! It wasn’t until I went with two of my bridesmaids, my mom, and her friend to the Carolina Bridal Outlet that I found the one. I felt like a bride as soon as I had it on. It wasn’t too formal, but it was gorgeous. For me, it was comfortable and simple with a little glam. My veil, however, was made from a sample of my mom’s wedding gown. It was cathedral length lace with beautiful detailing. It meant so much that she gave it to me to wear. Paired with my dress, it was absolutely perfect for our ceremony.
Describe your wedding flowers: We used fluffy, pink peonies. They have always been my favorite! I loved the contrast against the mint bridesmaid dresses. We also incorporated some cherry blossoms and garden roses in some of our centerpieces.
Describe your wedding cake: Our cake was a three tiered round cake. It was fairly traditional, with buttercream icing. We filled the spaces between the tiers with peonies and the details of the embedded dots and the monogram dressed it up even more. The inside was delicious! We had different fillings, but our favorite was cookies n’ cream.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Our biggest challenge was actually overcoming some of the emotions that a wedding can bring on. We really came to realize some major differences between his family and mine, and we had to find a way to merge everything, but be true to ourselves at the same time. Steven and I grew closer through it, which I’m very thankful for!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? In our ceremony, we stuck to the traditional vows. We wrote our own promises to one another and kept it personal as we exchanged them in letters the day of our wedding. The cutest part of Steven’s note to me was that he included the “40 Rules for a Happy Marriage” notecard from Hyman’s Seafood – one of our favorite spots in Charleston.

In honor of Derby Week here on SW, I’ve gathered some of our favorite Derby-esque fashion for some stylish Southern goodness! So tip up your brim and let’s get started, y’all!

Large or small, wide brimmed, feathered, flowered or just plain outrageous, women from around the world top off their Derby duds with one the finest Southern traditions – Derby hats! Personally, I think the head wear in the grandstands might just be the best part of the Kentucky Derby.

Wondering how you can pull off this millinery trend? Try pairing your Derby-inspired topper with a simple shift dress of a coordinating color and be sure to keep your makeup clean and natural. Don’t forget, true Derby attire is not complete without a pair of sky-high ankle breakers! But take a tips from experienced Derby divas and also pack a pair of fashionable, yet comfortable, flats or flip flops to wear home.

Love this post! I’m a hat fiend. I had a Sunday Hat Birthday Brunch for a birthday that I blogged about, and I wore my Easter bonnet recently which drew lots of comments. I’m 32 but I’ve been wearing hats for years (following tradition from my mom and grandmothers). The key is to keep your “crown” youthful and wear it with confidence. I’m not sure about all that having the “face” to pull off a hat I always hear about. Just about everyone can unless you have a huge head. LOL!
