For these high school sweethearts (who actually first met in elementary school!), planning for their wedding also meant preparing for marriage and the journey of the new life together they were about to embark on. While the details were important too, planning for their marriage was undoubtedly the most important thing to Brittany and Michael, and we love that! When it came to the beautiful details, this sweet couple turned the reigns over to their planner, Some Kind of Wonderful, and their florals to none other than our Blue Ribbon Vendor, Holly Chapple. I’m pretty sure I’m Team Brittany when it comes to choosing a favorite detail of their wedding–her choice (and mine!), that stunning bridal bouquet! Hello, dahlias!

Big SW hugs to another Blue Ribbon Vendor, Katelyn James for capturing this fun day!

My favorite detail was my bridal bouquet. I think it completed our pictures and my bridal look so perfectly, with the pops of color and the beautiful dahlias. It was so much more than I expected! I never knew I could love a bouquet so much–I wish it could have lasted forever!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment of our day was seeing Michael for the first time during our first look. We had such an amazing day and there are so many moments that stick out in my mind, but walking down the steps at the front of the house and seeing the look on his face when we first saw each other is something I will never forget. I have never felt more beautiful. It was so special to just have those few minutes together to take it all in.

We said traditional vows during the ceremony, but we also wanted to make our ceremony personal. Before the wedding, we wrote lists of “10 Things I Love About You,” which we kept secret from each other until we read them aloud during the ceremony. This was such a fun way to make the ceremony personal to the two of us. One my favorite things he wrote was “I love that we can spend nonstop time together and I still feel like it’s not enough.”

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I think having our wedding on an estate in the horse country of Virginia definitely added some Southern elements to our day. Some of the horses even photo bombed our pictures! We also had our reception in a barn. Our venue, The Maples, is a historic home that was used (and was nearly burned to the ground) during the Civil War.

We really wanted a rustic barn venue, and after doing some research, we found a few, but then Michael found The Maples through a coworker. When we pulled up the gravel driveway, surrounded by the orange and yellow fall trees, we looked at each other and knew that this was the place! It is such an amazing home and the family was kind enough to let us have our wedding there. I can’t imagine having our day anywhere else.

We wanted a cake that would represent our day, so we were looking for something that was simple, beautiful, and rustic. We had a three-tiered cake with white icing that had pink flowers on it. Placing the cake on a tree stump gave it a rustic look that went perfectly with the feel of our day.

How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? I feel like so much of being engaged is about preparing for the wedding day, and when you think about it, the wedding only lasts for a few hours. What you are really preparing for is the marriage, which is a lifetime together! There is so much focus on the details, the dress, and the flowers–which are all important and I obsessed over, don’t get me wrong! But preparing for marriage and the journey of life you’re about to be on together is the most important thing. We spent about four months meeting with a mentor couple at our church once a week, going through a marriage preparation book. I cannot tell you how helpful and important this was! We talked about so many important things, which really helped us realize the commitment we were making to each other and how to communicate.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Michael and I met when we were in elementary school. We were neighbors and he came to vacation Bible school at my house. We lost touch over the next few years and then reconnected during physics class in high school. He started flirting with me over a game of spoons. We started dating at the end of my junior year, so we are high school sweethearts! We both went to Virginia Tech and got engaged a few months after graduating. After six years of dating, we could not have been more excited to be engaged and to start planning our wedding!
Tell us all about the proposal! Michael and I were driving out in the plains of Virginia in the fall. It was SO beautiful and such a perfect day! I found out later that he had picked up the ring that morning, so it was definitely burning a hole in his pocket. As we were driving home, he decided to pull over into a field as the sun was setting. I thought we were just stopping to take some pictures, because he knows that’s something I love to do! But then, he asked me to follow him into the middle of the field, and as we were standing there, he got down on one knee. I honestly don’t remember what he said as he was asking me to marry him because I started crying as soon as I realized what was happening!
When did y’all get married? September 13, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 120
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I bought a dress a month after we got engaged, and a few days later, I felt like I hadn’t made the right decision. I waited until it came in, took it home, and tried it on again, and I knew it wasn’t the perfect dress for my day. I felt so upset because of the money that we had already spent, but Michael was so supportive and told me we had waited for this day for so long and he wanted me to feel like the most beautiful bride on our wedding day. I went out and found the most perfect dress a few days later, and I could not have been happier with that decision!
Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look. My biggest reason was because we had the world’s most amazing photographer–Katelyn James! I have followed her blog for years and have seen all the amazing moments she captures during a first look. It was so special for the two of us to have a few quiet moments together. You really don’t get too many of those on the wedding day. It was so nice to be able to see each other, pray together and take in the day before the everything got started.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My grandpa, who married us, read 1 Corinthians 13: 4-13 at the ceremony.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. A song we really wanted to have played as we walked back up the aisle was “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors. We blasted this song in the car together all summer as we drove to and from wedding appointments, so we knew we wanted this song to play right after we got married. This reminded us what an amazing and fun day it was going to be! My dad and I danced to “It Won’t Be Like This for Long” by Darius Rucker. When I was listening to songs in the car, thinking about our father/daughter dance, this one made me cry, so I knew it was the one we had to dance to.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? When the planning gets stressful and you start to take that stress out on each other (trust me, it happens!), take a deep breath and refocus on the end goal. You’re planning your life together and you’ve found your best friend. When you think about that, it takes all the stress out of the seating chart, the napkin colors, or the guest list. At the end of the day, it will all work out and you will be married to your favorite person in the world! Sometimes, you just need to take a weekend or a night off from wedding planning and go on a date together. :)
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? These past five months of being married have been the best of our relationship. Getting to spend life together, coming home to each other every day and just doing boring things together, like grocery shopping, is so much more fun with your best friend! We are in the process of buying a townhouse that we are going to do some reno work on, and we are so excited!

If you’ve been reading Southern Weddings for awhile, chances are, you’ve fallen in love with a Katelyn James Photography wedding or two! Katelyn and Michael are a husband and wife photography team, and as well as shooting pretty weddings (see a few of our favorites here, here, and here!), they also love decorating their home in Richmond, Virginia, where they live with their ridiculously adorable bichpoo, Bokeh. Their passion for opening up their home and gathering family and friends together is the driving force behind the design and decor in their house, and we have a feeling y’all are going to love this peek inside as much as we do!

Tell us your love story in one sentence. After dating for eight years, I married my high school sweetheart, best friend, and greatest gift from God… life couldn’t be any sweeter!
What has been the most surprising thing about marriage? I think we’re constantly going through different changes in our marriage. The most recent change in our life is that we are now a full-time husband and wife photography team! I’ve been so surprised with what we are capable of accomplishing as a team. We’re so much better together than we are apart!

Do you rent or own? We actually do both. We bought a very small Cape Cod when we first got married in 2010, and we recently built more of a family-sized home in our area! We currently rent our first home out to friends from church.
Tell us about the process of moving in together. Do you have any tips for blending your two styles? Michael and I grew up together, went on family vacations together, and have known each other since we were toddlers, so there were very few things that shocked us after moving in together. I am learning not to have unrealistic expectations about how tidy our house should be. Messes stress me out… Michael doesn’t seem to mind them :) However, over the last three years, Michael has learned that I’m in a much better mood when the house is somewhat put together, so he makes that a priority, and I love him for it!

Where do you splurge and where do you save when decorating? What are some of your favorite sources for home things? We splurge on big ticket items that need to last forever. For example, when we moved into the new house, we knew that we wanted to invest in a couch that we could use for 10+ years. However, we bought more affordable end tables and a coffee table, because those can easily be replaced. Our accent pieces and guest bedroom sets are mostly from IKEA–we love the Liatorp Collection! We don’t splurge on lamps or small decor pieces, simply because there are awesome options at HomeGoods and Target. Why spend $250 on one lamp when you can decorate a whole room with that money?
Which items from your wedding registry do you use the most often? We love our vacuum and our luggage! Those were two big items on our registry that we’re SO thankful for.
What different decisions, if any, would you make for your registry if you knew then what you knew now? Why did I get fine china?! Our everyday dishes are white ceramic sets from Crate and Barrel and they are beautiful. We registered for a full set of fine china and only received about 1/3 of what we registered for. The sad part is that Crate and Barrel discontinued that pattern before we saved up to complete the collection, so now we’re stuck with a few pieces of fine china that we never use! I wish we had saved that money and invested in some more awesome serving dishes instead, since we like to entertain.

Who cooks dinner? Michael cooks, thank goodness! I’m a horrible chef.
What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meal? When we don’t know what to make, we have pasta! It’s easy and always readily available. We also grill chicken quite often and save the leftovers for my salads during the week. Our weekends are normally our “date nights,” so we usually eat out.
What’s your favorite place to find recipes? Our moms! Michael is constantly getting recipes from our moms. Whether we’re having a Southwest stew or some type of casserole, chances are, the recipe probably came from home.

Which room in your home is your favorite, and why? I would that say that we both love our living room the most! It’s where we spend most of our time relaxing at home. When we have friends over or events at the house, everyone gathers in that space. Great memories are made in that room!
What most makes your house feel like home? People. I love to decorate, but even the prettiest decor can’t make a house feel like a home. Our house feels most like a home when both of our families are here visiting with us!

What is one small way you love or serve your spouse? This is going to sound like such a small thing, but Michael and I serve each other by taking the dog out to use the bathroom. He takes Bokeh out when I’m entrenched in emails, and I take him out it in the middle of the night when Michael is asleep.
What’s your best tip for balancing your relationship and other life priorities? We have learned that we’ll never have time off if we don’t schedule it. I try to mark off at least 2-3 “stay at home” days per week, two to three months in advance.
Before getting married, I wish someone had told me… to not have expectations for my own marriage based on other people’s marriages.

How does your family handle finances? Do you use a set budget? Our financial life has changed quite a bit in the last three years since we got married. Now that we’re self-employed and are running a photography business, we have sporadic annual income–no month is the same. We have found that designating 1/4 for business savings, 1/4 for business checking, 1/4 for personal savings and 1/4 to live on works well for us. However, we have just changed the business to an “S-Corp,” so we’ll be receiving payroll for the first time, and we plan on starting a budget based off of Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace curriculum!
Do you have children? No children quite yet, but we hope to have several in the future! Michael loves kids and I’m so excited to see him as a dad one day! We are really enjoying life as a married couple without kids right now, but we’re excited for that season whenever it comes.
Do you have a favorite date night idea to share? Michael and I love going on car rides in the evenings and looking at large, historic Richmond homes. It’s cheap and it never gets old! We recently bought an old convertible that we have coined our “fun car.” It’s the perfect ride for these outings downtown!

What is your favorite part of being married? Never having to say good night and then part ways at the end of the day, and having a permanent companion by my side!
In 2014, our family is most excited about… traveling, crossing off some big bucket list items, and establishing even more of a work/life balance.
Is there anything else about your home or family life that you think our readers would be interested in? Michael and I have found that we are the best versions of ourselves when we’re making time for God in our day-to-day life and in our marriage. There is nothing more powerful than a couple that can pray together and allow God to lead their marriage. So often, we forget this and try to do life on our own and by our own strength. We truly believe that God has a very specific purpose for everyone and every marriage!

Happy Halloween! Can y’all believe it’s the last day of October? Remember, November means the launch of V6, so hurry up and place your preorder and/or RSVP to our fabulous launch party!

We are so excited to share today’s wedding because Katherine is a longtime SW reader! With her sweet spirit and bubbly personality, we’re not surprised that her wedding to Matt was so lively and colorful. I love the heart she put into planning every detail, but my favorite thing about Katherine and Matt’s big day is her most memorable moment–when the fact that she was getting married that day really hit her. It brought a few tears to my eyes because it was such an authentic reminder that despite the prettiest details, when it’s all said and done, the only thing that matters on your wedding day is becoming husband and wife!

We’re so grateful to our delightful Blue Ribbon Vendor member, Katelyn James, for sharing Katherine and Matt’s lovely wedding with us!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There are SO many amazing memories! One of my favorites happened in the bridal suite with my best girls when we were getting ready. Anna (our day-of coordinator) had stopped by to see how I was doing and to bring me a surprise milkshake (so sweet!), Katelyn James had started taking pictures, and everyone was running around applying hairspray, steaming gowns, and finishing final touches. I walked into the bathroom for a break between my makeup and hair appointments and that’s when it truly hit me–TODAY I’M GETTING MARRIED!!! I started crying and laughing all at the same time! I seriously gets chills just thinking about that moment. There is something absolutely breathtaking about the realization of “come what may, I am his at the end of the day.” As detail-oriented as I am, at that moment I knew our day was going to be perfect, no matter what.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes!! I’ve been following wedding and photography blogs for years, and I have a love for first look pictures! (Plus, I’m incredibly close with my father and knew walking down the aisle would be a lot about my relationship with him vs. seeing my groom.) It took a little time to convince Matt, but in the end, we both say our first look was one of the best moments of the day! It also worked well with the logistics of our day since we had a 7 p.m. ceremony.

Amanda from Anthomanic did an incredible job of bringing my floral vision to life. My biggest regret is not being able to keep my bouquet alive forever! I told her I wanted big, fluffy and garden-like–that girl didn’t disappoint!! My bouquet was full of bright flowers with ribbon flowing down from it. Since my bridesmaids’ dresses were bright, Amanda created all-white bouquets for them. She also created two BEAUTIFUL wreaths for the church doors and a to-die-for mantle display in the reception home. She had hanging flowers and candles in the crepe myrtles and used the vases I’d collected for all of the centerpieces. I am so grateful for her creativity and how fun she was to work with!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Yes, we did! We shared personal vows to one another and then shared traditional vows. Our personal vows were unplanned in the sense that we didn’t write them together and neither of us knew what the other was going to say. They were absolutely perfect! We both ending up touching on similar things and they really showed who we are as a couple–romantic, silly, and dedicated to glorifying Christ. I love how he vowed “to not completely ignore you during football games,” just as I vowed, much to my dad’s disappointment, to “stand by your side and support the decisions you make, even if that means cheering for the Redskins!”

We LOVE seeing brides use our Vows print in their weddings! Find them (and lots more fun stuff) in our shop.

Tradition. Hospitality. Family. Those are words Matt and I think of when we think of “Southern” and we really wanted to embrace all of them at our wedding! Tradition: We were married in the same church my parents were married in 29 years ago. Our reception venue is an old, historic mansion that Robert E. Lee once visited! Hospitality: We wanted our guests to be comfortable at our outdoor July reception, so we offered fans that doubled as reception programs, bug spray, and a place to rest in the air conditioning, if needed. Family: Our families made this possible. They showered us with love and support and truly made our dream day a reality. My grandmother is the mayor of Fredericksburg, and since our reception venue isn’t typically a wedding venue (it’s normally used for hospital fundraisers), her connections made it possible for us to use it! We also wanted to honor our heritage by creating a Legacy Room at the reception. We displayed both of our mothers’ wedding gowns and pictures going back to our great-grandparents.

I’m that girl who’s dreamed about her wedding day her ENTIRE life!! As soon as that pretty ring was on my finger, I went into overdrive. I contacted vendors, pinned until the wee-morning hours, made spreadsheets for absolutely everything, and crafted to my heart’s content. Planning our wedding was an amazing, exhausting, once-in-a-lifetime-I’ll-never-forget-it-ever kind of thing…seeing everything come together? My heart literally burst at the seams! Throwing cake at my husband, dancing with my daddy, and seeing my 80-year-old grandparents kiss on the dance floor made it all matter. Our whole wedding was one big detail I will never, ever forget. Seeing it all come together made every late night, every stress-induced tear, and every joy-filled shriek so completely worth it!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We’re high school sweethearts! He stole my heart in fifth period study hall and asked me out in seventh period yearbook. We passed notes, went to high school dances, and had our first (awful) kiss in his best friend’s driveway (romantic, right?!). I’m a year older, so after high school, I went off to a small college in Bridgewater, Virginia, and the next year, he started attending JMU in Harrisonburg, Virginia (only a few minutes away from Bridgewater, and where we now live). We broke up for two long months my sophomore year of college (which he’ll never let me forget, ha!), but God had other plans for us and we’ve been together ever since!
Tell us all about the proposal! We’d been dating for over five years and boy, was I ready! On July 7, 2012, he told me his friend gave him a gift card that was about to expire, and it just so happened to be at my favorite place in Harrisonburg. After dinner, we headed to Reddish Knob, a lookout point outside of Harrisonburg that we had always wanted to visit. As we drove up there, he started honking his horn like a lunatic, telling me all these bunnies were in the way and they needed to move (what?!)! It turns out his best friend was at the top setting everything up, and since there wasn’t any cell phone service, this was his warning to hide! A few minutes after we got up there, we walked down the trail, turned a corner, and there was an arbor complete with roses, candles, and pictures. He looked at me and said, “Well, who’s this for?!” (silly man!) and then proceeded to ask me to marry him. I have no idea what else he said; I just remember being so shocked, I couldn’t even cry! Matt’s best friend and his girlfriend appeared and told me they took pictures of the whole thing. After we left and got to an area where we had cell service, I was so disappointed that my parents weren’t answering their phone–all I wanted to do was tell EVERYONE! Turns out, Matt had a surprise party waiting for us when we got back. I walked into a room full of my parents and best friends, and tons of screaming/crying!!
When did y’all get married? July 20, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200-215
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my dress when I was least expecting to! My MOH and I went to Fredericksburg to look at a few venues with my mom. When the first venue turned out to be the one, we cancelled the rest of our appointments and gave Ava Laurenne Bride a call. Going into the appointment, I knew I wanted a sweetheart neckline, a little princess feel, and some sparkle. Wendy at Ava Laurenne Bride was AMAZING and gave me the best experience! I tried on several different styles and knew as soon as I put on “the one”–dropped waist, gorgeous lace, and yards of soft tulle. Perfection! Since it was my first time dress shopping, I decided to wait and look at a few stores in Harrisonburg. At the Harrisonburg store, completely overwhelmed by all the dresses, I had the affirmation that the previous dress was really “the one.” I went back to Ava Laurenne Bride with my mom and grandmothers to claim my dream dress. Being the girly-girl I am, I had a gorgeous, sparkly beaded belt custom made for my gown; it was just the something “extra” the dress needed!
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Matt’s sister read Song of Solomon 8:6-7
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We’re not big “cake” people, so we had a small cake made for us to cut and a dessert bar for the rest of our guests, which included apple crisp, brownies, ice cream, and peanut butter fudge bars. A friend of ours makes the best cakes and we were so grateful she did ours! She made us a custom funfetti cake using only pink and orange, decorated with fun ombre ruffles. She also created a surprise groom’s cake for Matt; his family has a silly joke about the monkey cake his mother made for his 6th birthday. I gave Amanda a picture and she created a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting that looked just like it! We loved eating it when we got back from our honeymoon. One of my favorite memories is seeing his expression when he saw it for the first time at our reception!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I have always loved this tradition and really wanted to incorporate all the great women in my family. My something borrowed was wearing a penny in my shoe that my maternal grandmother wore on her wedding day. My something blue was a blue topaz ring my maternal grandparents gave me when I graduated high school. I had two for the “something old” category: 1. the lace sewn onto my veil; it came from my paternal grandmothers gown. And 2. I made my hair comb out of lace from my mother’s veil. Lastly, my something new was a handkerchief given to me by my matron of honor. I highly recommend having a wedding handkerchief–I was very emotional and am so glad I had one. Plus, now I can pass it on to my children for their something old or borrowed!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Budgeting is always really hard, and since I’m the only daughter, I know it was hard for my mom too! We also struggled with narrowing down the guest list.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Katelyn James Photography!! Hands down, she and her husband Michael are absolutely amazing and we are so grateful they shot our wedding! They made wedding day pictures go so smoothly (even with a large bridal party and the July heat) and they were so much FUN to work with! We are going to cherish our pictures for the rest of our lives, and I can’t wait to one day show them to our children and grandchildren!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? On your wedding day, you get to be the bride (yay!), which means you need to trust the people you hired to make your day happen so you can relax and enjoy it! Make sure you have an amazing planner so your day runs smoothly, a great photographer to capture those priceless memories, and if you can, hire a videographer. Our video makes me laugh and cry every single time, and I’m so glad we re-worked our budget to fit videography in there!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Since we’ve been together for so long, it means so much to finally say “husband” and hear him say “wife!” Right now, we’re loving the “ordinary” things about marriage: living together, home cooked meals, weeknight TV sitcoms, and football season. We’re so excited to see what the Lord has in store of us!!
