Category: In The Office

Hi, friends!  Katharine here, ready to wrap up what I’m pretty sure is going to go down in the books as one of the craziest weeks in SW history.  (Three cheers for epic blog posts, magazine lay-out and lots (and lots!) of print prep.)   It’s been so crazy, in fact, that we could barely even remember everything that’s happened in the past five days.  To recap (and refresh our memories), let’s take a look at what the SW girls have been up to:

MONDAY:

Big Week at Southern Weddings:  Emily kicked off our whirlwind week with a welcome-back post detailing Lara and Em’s trip to Atlanta and announcing our big week ahead.  (I wonder if she knew just how busy it was going to be!)

Southern Sayings Contest:  We had so much fun reading the responses to Lara’s Favorite Southern Sayings Contest and think you will, too!  Y’all giddyup and mosey on over to the SW blog to place your vote for your favorite Southern saying, ya hear?

TUESDAY:

Jessica Claire Workshop:  In celebration of the L.A. photographer’s wedding to Jeff Norwood, Emily and Lara instituted Jessica Claire Appreciation Day.  To honor the new Mrs. Norwood, we’d like to share some of the bride’s very best!

Be sure to check out the Portraits, Ceremony and Reception Workshops.  P.S. Don’t forget about the Details!

WEDNESDAY:

Etiquette with Emily:  Emily got the blogosphere buzzing with her inaugural Etiquette with Emily post.  First up on the agenda?  White to a wedding: ye or nay?  The verdict?  Most of you suggested guests leave their all-white pieces at home; it’s the bride’s day to shine!  What do you think?

Sponsor Love, Part IV:  In her latest installment of Sponsor Love, Emily thanked some truly amazing photographers and planners who just so happen to be some of our most loyal sponsors.  Revisit the post to see highlights from A Delightful Day Event Planning, Birdsong Photography, Asheville Events, Ashley Colhouer, Betsy White, Kristy at Momental Designs, Regina Holder and Scarlett Lillian.

Wanwisa Wednesday: Golden Rules: Our favorite NYC contributor showed us how to add the “Midas touch” to any wedding.  Swoon!

THURSDAY:

Rehearsal Dinner: Cristin + Harpur:  In lieu of a real wedding, we featured an out-of-this-world awesome rehearsal dinner from the talented Sarah Rhoads.  Trust us: you HAVE to see this Western-inspired barnyard shindig.

I Love SW Photo Contest Winner: On Wednesday, we wrapped up a three week long contest asking readers to show their love for Southern Weddings by announcing Staci from Unique Event Design as the grand-prize winner.  (P.S.  Staci won a $50 i-Tunes gift card!)  Big kisses to Staci and all our other SW loves.

Submission Madness and a Thank-You:  On Thursday, Lara dished out an epic thank-you to all the 300+ photographers and planners who submitted to-die-for images for the next print edition.  To express our gratitude, we announced a special discount on print and online ads for these loyal SW contributors.  Want to get in on the ad game while you still can?  You have one more day to take advantage of this special discount!  Email me at katharine {at} iloveswmag {dot} com.

 Friday:

Engage ’09: The Encore:  As if this week wasn’t already crazy enough, our fearless leader is jetting off to sunny Las Vegas for the Engage ’09 Encore at the fabulous Wynn!  For those of you who didn’t know, Engage is an annual conference that gathers the best of the best in the luxury wedding business to learn, grow, and truly “engage” with each other.  Want to know what Lara is doing?  Be sure to follow her for all the juicy details!

Whew!  We made it!  I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited for Friday before.  Luckily, I’ve had some pretty awesome ladies to keep me company during this whirlwind week.  (Not to mention some really awesome sponsors, readers and loyal fans.)  All in all?  Another great week here at Southern Weddings.

Love,
Katharine

P.S.  Interested in advertising in our November mag?  Check out the top 10 reasons you should be a part of our next issue and don’t forget to take advantage of Lara’s special ad discount while you still can! Email me at katharine {at} iloveswmag {dot} com for more details.

In just a few short hours, I’m headed to the airport for Engage 09 :: The Encore.  Yes, I’m going a couple days early to get some quiet time (is that possible in Vegas?) — and work — in.  Engage, created by Rebecca Grinnals and Kathryn Arce, is a luxury wedding business conference that gathers the best of the best together to learn, grow, and truly “engage” with each other.  This will be my third Engage conference and I couldn’t be more excited! Be sure to read my recap of the last spectacular conference in Grand Cayman. This particular conference is at my favorite hotel in Vegas, The Encore.  Be sure to follow along via Twitter (I’ll be posting tons of pics over the next 5 days) and also via the #Engage09Encore hashtag.  Also, The Encore now has a Twitter account themselves!  I love seeing businesses embracing social media and really being active with it.  Kudos to Rebecca and Kathryn for putting together a program that promises to be the best Engage yet!  Speakers:  Rebecca, creative business guru Sean Low, hilarious planning diva Marcy Blum, my good friend Simon T Bailey and Todd-Avery Lenahan of ABA Events Las Vegas.  There will be a very special event on Tuesday night with two VIP guest hosts:  Randy Fenoli of “Say Yes to the Dress” fame and the incomparable Sylvia Weinstock.  We’re very excited to be shooting Randy in Vegas on Monday for our upcoming issue.  Kleinfeld is sending four top gowns that Randy will be styling in the shot- can’t wait! Much more to come via Twitter…  I have to go PACK!

Wishing everyone a fab weekend!

ps- in case you missed the memo, Southern Weddings now has its own Twitter account!

If you’ve been following me this week on Twitter, you know I asked photographers to send me their top shots for print.  Well, they did.  I woke up to 300+ submissions within 16 hours.  I’m going through each one personally and as I check off each email, a strong feeling has come over me:  gratitude.  I’ve worked my tush off, going 1,000,000 miles per minute for the last few years.  Somehow tonight it all hit me… the movie in my mind replayed and showed me how far we’ve come.  With the recent devastating Conde Nast closings, I’m even more struck by our unique place in the wedding market.  Brides, friends and vendors, we’re so grateful for your support in keeping us as a fresh, flourishing, fab magazine- strong and growing online and strong and growing in print! (cover image by Jose Villa)

In going through all of these submissions and incredibly sweet notes, I had to stop in the rush of all of this and give thanks.  I am so overwhelmingly grateful to have a job where people share their art with me.  Many of you confessed being nervous and that this was your first submission.  Many told me personal stories and made me laugh.  There were some mind-blowing submissions from people I had never heard of mixed in with some … uh… scary ones.  (By the way, after hours of scouring through submissions, I started posting #submission tips on my business twitter account:  WeddingRep.)  Thank you all so much for taking the time to share your work with me.  Even if I don’t pick an image of yours for this issue, just know that you’re on my radar.  I added a slew of new blogs to Google Reader and met some wedding professionals I can’t wait to follow.  I’ll be sending acceptance emails out late next week after I get back from Engage09 :: Encore.

I wish I could personally hug everyone who sent images in.  As a thank you to those who submitted work to me in the last few days, I’m giving you a significant discount on print and online ads. (sorry, if I post the discount here, I’m afraid people will try to send me more submissions!  I’ve got my work cut out for me already! 68 more emails to go through…).  Email Katharine ASAP (discount ends in 48 hours) for the rates and available slots, which aren’t many at this point.

Last but certainly not least, I have a few VIP thank you’s…

Emily, Katharine, Whitney, Sydney, and Alyssa…  It’s a big couple weeks for us and you’re all working your tails off!  Words just don’t do justice to how much I love spending time with you ladies.  Em, I had so much fun with you in ATL.  Ladies and gents, this lady knows weddings!  She taught me more in those three days about blogs and the latest and greatest than I had learned myself in a year.  Katharine, thank you for keeping the SW engine running.  You are always raising the bar!  Thank you for your very sweet gift to me this week.  Made my week and I can’t wait to spend time with grandma busum.  Whitney, I light up when you walk into the office.  It could just be the fact that you’re my redheaded sister, but I think it’s just you.  You will rule the world one day and it will be very glamorous and gorgeous.  Thank you for always being so positive, happy and supportive.  Alyssa, we’re so glad to have you and Syd, you look good sitting at my desk girl!  Much love ladies as we launch this killer issue!  GO TEAM!

xo

Congrats, congrats, congrats!PS – There’s a reason (actually, more like 100) that SW is here and other publications are not. Keep doing what you do so very well :-D

Great post!…I think one of the many things that makes SW so appealing is the constant influx of fresh ideas. It is what sets your magazine apart from the others. Can’t wait to see the new issue:)

Really it is a truly inspiring beautiful magazine for brides, vendors, and all those wedding lovers. Thank you

It’s great to read encouraging words from a "boss lady" so many people in the higher positions at companies really forget about how to interact with their employees and vendors. It’s refreshing to see someone who does. Keep up the fab job you’re doing. Having a wonderful group of girls to work with makes each day a fun time instead of a drudgery .
