My sister and I just booked our hotels for our March trip to Paris! It made me extra excited, then, when Emily told me we’d be featuring Natalia + Levi’s wedding on the blog this week. When Natalia + Levi planned their Georgia plantation wedding, they had one thing in mind: the shabby chic combo of the style of Parisian flea markets and the warmth of Southern cotton fields. If Parisian flea markets look anything like this wedding, then I’m already a fan! I love how the couple’s pink and gold invitation suite was the perfect hint at what’s to come and how glitz and glamor still made an appearance in the small details — whether it was the gold foil envelope liners or the bejeweled bridesmaids’ dresses. I say this about a lot of things, but I really mean it when I say I’m completely smitten with N + L’s altar setup. The fireplace mantel and rug were finds that created the feeling of home at the altar and were repurposed after “I do.” We can’t thank Melissa Schollaert Photography enough for sharing!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.
Levi and I met our senior year of high school during a college tour at the University of Georgia. We immediately fell in love, but not with each other (that comes later!). We both fell in love with Athens, Georgia. Four years later, we both graduated from UGA and started planning a Southern affair in the same town where we met and built our relationship.
Describe the proposal: In December 2009, Levi took me on a ski trip in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for my Christmas present. Being the Christmas freak that I am, Levi humored me by walking around the streets with hot chocolate in hand, enjoying the lights, decorations, and carolers. We walked along in the snow and next thing I knew, Levi was down on one knee! I, of course, acted like a doofus and kept asking him if he was joking. I hadn’t seen it coming! He reassured me that he was, in fact, not joking and for me to please stop asking if he was. I think his exact words were “Darn it, Natalia, it’s a real diamond! So, yes?” My answer was somewhere along the lines of “uh, YEAH!” (Alas, I’ve never been one with words).
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Personal, romantic, and surprise-filled.
How many guests attended your wedding? 125
Favorite design element of your big day: I’m still completely in love with the antique mantel that we used at the ceremony. Anything with white chippy paint pulls at my heart strings and the mantel is no exception. I can’t wait to find the perfect spot for it in our house. Combined with the heirloom rug, pitcher, pillar candles, and various floral elements, the end result couldn’t have been more romantic.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Finding my wedding dress was by no means an easy process! I was completely jaded by wedding dress television shows. I probably tried on about 100 dresses and became extremely frustrated that I wasn’t crying or having any of the other emotions you see on TV. When I got to La Raine’s, my consultant gave me advice that completely changed my outlook on the process. She told me that sometimes you don’t have an “ah-ha!” moment. Sometimes, the dress becomes truly special because it’s yours. She was right. I bought a dress that day and made it my own by ordering a custom belt from Etsy.
Briefly describe your wedding flowers: The flowers were simply amazing! The personal flowers were exactly what I had envisioned. Pat was able to maximize my budget by using flowers with full blooms to create the biggest impact. She used peonies, hydrangeas, ranunculus, anemones, tulips, and baby’s breath throughout the reception. She knocked it out of the park! My co-workers in the floral department of Epting Events, Bart Scott and Leigh Frazier, provided the beautiful wreath and log arrangement for the mantle at the ceremony. They took my vision and propelled it to new heights
Bride’s favorite detail of the wedding: Our entire ceremony was perfect. From the aisle mowed out of the tall grass and antique fireplace mantle as the altar, to the mixture of bridesmaids and groomsmen on both sides of the aisle, the entire ceremony was very “us.” I was also able to surprise my mom, a huge fan of gospel music, with a choir performing “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” for the recessional. They sat among the other guest and surprised everyone at the end, Love Actually style!

A bright and shining winter beach wedding like Emily envisioned was just the ticket to start off the New Year! I love the idea of pairing glitzy items like gold foil cards and metallic jewelry with organic material like linen and kraft to play off the beach tones and sparkly waters. If you’re picturing a relaxed but elegant beach wedding brightened up with dozens of tea lights after dark, then these picks are for you!

A. Bright winter wedding loveliness doesn’t have to stop at “I do.” Bring the style into your home with this striped bedding.

B. Send guests off with a little goodie! Pack them in these kraft bags, slap a custom sticker or stamp on the front and you have an adorable thank you present!

C. Just like blue skies make your heart happy, this blue bow tie will make your beau look positively dapper.

D. Whether you’re donning it for the rehearsal dinner or dressing your ‘maids, this one-shoulder frock is affordable and just darling.

E. Make your wrists sparkly and bright with this gold chain bracelet.

F. A thank you note goes even further when it’s gold foil and striped!

G. We’re a huge fan of sparkly heels in the office, but you don’t want to sink in the sand in them! Try these adorable flats, instead.

H. Give the beach coolness a touch of warmth. We’re always fans of clusters of votives, especially when they’re as pretty as these mercury glass ones.

I. Beach weddings also mean beach lounging right? Make things a little more formal with a wooden bench — but be sure to keep some throws nearby in case the winter beach breeze comes through, especially at night.

J. We love this natural canvas tote with it’s leather handles. Stuff it with gift for your bridesmaids or with a change of clothes for post-wedding beach frolicking!

K. These alphabet trays mimic the colors of the ocean. Keep them handy on your dressing table for trinkets and small jewelry.

L. We love a little sparkle in unexpected places. Wrap up invitations, programs or favors with this white and gold twine.

Did you plan a winter beach wedding? What items do you think are must-haves?

Hello dolls! I hope you enjoyed the wonderful holidays, and I hope they were filled with Southern family traditions. Goodness knows there are a ton of those!

I think I say that I love each tradition I work on, and the truth is, I do! You might recognize the first image from my Dream Southern Wedding, and you might remember that I am completely obsessed with it! SO, without further ado, let’s get started on the Southern wedding tradition of the white Bible. This tradition was originally introduced to us by one of our fabulous readers, and I’m happy to share it with you today.

Image credit from top to bottom and left to right: A Bryan Photo, Ali Harper via this awesome SW feature, and Sherry Hammonds.

Originating in Northern Ireland, brides would carry a white Bible instead of a traditional wedding bouquet. Many Irish families had Bibles that were passed down from generation to generation, and carrying this heirloom was a way for a bride to honor her family. During my research, I was thrilled to find out that Grace Kelly carried a little white Bible covered in flowers down the aisle at her wedding to the Prince of Monaco.

These days, for Christians brides, the white Bible is also an outward representation of their faith. Bibles and small white prayer books can be weaved into your bouquet, or can be embellished with ribbons or cascading flowers. If you decide not to carry a Bible, we also love the idea of weaving paper strips imprinted with a favorite verse into or around your bouquet. One of our past brides, Melissa, did something similar with her bouquet!

What’s your favorite Southern wedding tradition? Have a fun one I haven’t covered yet? Send it my way!

P.S. Here are a few of my faves:
Burying the Bourbon
A Moment of Prayer
The Sorority Sing

A very long time ago *laugh* in the olden days I carried a white lace covered brides Bible and three yellow roses (Yes I’m from Texas).

So surprised (and happy) when I saw this- we refer to it as a “prayer book” in my family : ). My wedding was a few months ago and I carried the prayer book that both my mother and grandmother carried at their weddings.

One of the best pictures from my sister`s wedding was the signing of the marriage certifcate. Another tradition from “the good ole days”. Thanks for using the white Bible tradition!

I found your website while looking for a very small gift bible for a bride. I have crocheted the cover and cannot find the bible. Even we as southerns are losing those wonderful traditions. I used to give ingraved bibles for births (pink for girls and blue for boys) and you cannot find those anymore. I love our traditions and we need to keep them alive.

I am marrying into the Snyder family on Jan 16, 2013. I have chosen a black bible with red roses and white daffodils with a red and white bow for my bouquet. I cant wait to get married.

I love this idea and I had no idea it was a Southern tradition – or even an Irish tradition! My Philadelphia born and bred mother of English descent carried a white bible ( New Testament actually) decorated with flowers at her wedding in 1947.
My non- Church wedding was 30 years ago. This month we are renewing our vows in church and I will be carrying her bible!
