Judging from the happy troupe of attendants parading down the aisle, Lizzie + Miles’ wedding at the Crane Cottage really must have been an all-out celebration. (And that’s precisely what we love most about Southern weddings!) Open Light Studio photographed the Jekyll Island Club wedding in Georgia, and Mardee Morris of Blooming Branches designed the sweet pastel-colored blooms. Lizzie added a little oomph to her tiered Modern Trousseau gown with a custom-made lace bolero – love! Another love? The bright pop of blue in the bridesmaids’ J. Crew dresses.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Miles and I met at our favorite dive bar in New Orleans, The Saint. We stayed up talking until the sun rose. We became good friends, but it took Hurricane Ivan in 2004 to bring us together. We ended up evacuating (separately) to Austin, TX. Miles, who didn’t own a cell phone at the time, spent the first two days using pay phones as he tried to track me down at the Austin City Limits Festival. He must have gone through handfuls of quarters! I was playing hard to get, but by the end of the festival, I was smitten.
Describe the proposal. Miles proposed to me in South China, a small town in Maine, where my family has owned a lake cottage for several generations. Growing up, I spent most of my summers there. One of my fondest childhood memories was going on “treasure hunts,” in which the adults would hide a treasure on one of the little islands in the middle of the lake for us kids to find. Fast-forward to August 2009: Miles, with the help of my parents, came up with a plan to propose to me in South China. Knowing how much I loved the treasure hunts as a child, they tricked me into thinking that Miles and I were boating out to bury a box of treasures for the kids in the community. Little did I know what was actually in the box.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Charming, vintage, effervescent. Our friends called it the “Southern Gatsby wedding.”
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Picking one detail is too hard! One: We loved the location! The Crane Cottage at the Jekyll Island Club made it possible for my whole family to be together under one roof. Miles’ family had a similar setup at the Cherokee Cottage, right next door. The close proximity made it so easy for our families to stroll back and forth between the two houses. Two: I loved that our six “flower girls” carried page wands with ribbons and skipped down the aisle to the beat of our “pied drummer” Dave, one of our groomsmen. Three: The flowers, graphics and photo booth, equipped with vintage costumes, created a whole turn-of-the-century vibe that Miles and I wanted to create.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The location was key to keeping the Southern feel of the wedding. The Jekyll Island Club, on the Intracoastal Waterway, is filled with beautiful old southern homes and magnificent oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Also, I loved that we used a lot of family heirlooms and antiques like my great-grandmother’s linens, my grandmother’s blue and white Canton teacups, and my aunts’ blue and white porcelain.

2nd Annual SW Holiday Ornament Swap!

by in Main on

As if there wasn’t already enough excitement today, we’re thrilled to announce our second annual holiday ornament swap!

Last year turned out to be a rousing success, and we know it’s going to be even better this year. After all, our office’s collective favorite month of the year is Nov. 25 – Dec. 25, so it’s only appropriate to host a celebration of sorts! Here’s how things are going to go down:

If you would like to participate, send an email to emily [at] iloveswmag [dot] com (or click here!) with “Holiday Ornament Swap” in the subject line by this Friday, November 26 (the day after Thanksgiving). Include your name, address, email address, website/blog address, and Twitter handle, if you have one.

By Tuesday, November 30, I will have emailed you the names and addresses of up to five people to send ornaments to.

You then have two options for the ornaments you send out:

Option One: Handmade by you. We suggest getting familiar with Gocco, Yudu, Cricut, Photoshop… or just some good old fashioned construction paper, glitter, and glue. Whichever design you choose, make sure it’s easy to produce in multiples – and ideally a bit Southern!

Option Two: Made by someone else. That someone else could be your sister-in-law, it could be an Etsy vendor, or it could be your neighborhood Target. It doesn’t have to be expensive! You could even buy a multi-pack of ornaments and send one to each of your swap partners.

Whether you choose option one or two, be sure to send out your ornaments no later than Wednesday, December 15! Then, all that’s left to do is wait for the holiday goodness to roll in.

A last note: Please don’t sign up if you don’t intend to follow through! Think about how disappointed you would be if you sent out beautiful ornaments and didn’t receive a single one in response… I know I would be very disappointed. And watch out for postage!

P.S. While you’re at it, how about signing up for Brooklyn Bride’s card swap, too? The more, the merrier, we say!

Let the holidays begin, y’all!

What a sweet, happy couple! I still can’t get over how lovely Sara’s bouquet (courtesy of Holly Chapple) is. Perfect for a fall wedding, don’t you think? The newlyweds celebrated their marriage with a chic reception at Virginia’s historic Whitehall Manor. Like the bridesmaids’ bright, flowy frocks, I love that S + B went with a cheery fall color to accent their elegant ballroom. Want more? Head on over to photographer Kristen Gardner’s blog post from the big day!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I went shopping for my dress in February during the crazy snow storm. It was fine, because we went shopping in Boston, but unfortunately my oldest sister could not get a flight out to Massachusetts from anywhere in Virginia. My mom and middle sister were still able to come up, though, so we carried on. We only went to one store, and as luck would have it, it was the first dress I tried on.
Describe your wedding flowers: I am not much of a flower person, so it was really hard for me to have a vision of what I wanted. Luckily, we were able to work with an incredibly talented florist, who had also designed the flowers for both of my sisters’ weddings. Holly created exactly what we were looking for, without us ever really being able to express it to her. She included succulents, beautiful cabbage roses, wheat, seeded eucalyptus and lambs ear in the arrangements. Bill is a hunter, so she even added a few pheasant and ostrich feathers to my bouquet and his boutonniere for a personal touch.
Describe your wedding cake: Cake is not our favorite dessert in the world, but we do love pies. In lieu of a traditional wedding cake, we would serve miniature pies in four different flavors: pumpkin, lemon chess, apple and chocolate pecan. It was hard to get the traditionalists in our family on board, but once they saw the pies, I think they quickly changed their minds!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Recapping with each other at the end of the day. We hadn’t been alone together since the beginning of the week, so it was awesome to catch up with each other and go over the day. We ordered late night room service and talked non-stop. It finally felt like we were married!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are looking forward to just spending time together. Wedding planning is fun but definitely takes up a lot of time, so it is nice to have that back. We also are busy planning our honeymoon to Italy this February!
