Handmade Find :: Kiki La Ru

by in Personal on

Welcome to our first handmade find of the week!

Anyone that knows me knows I LOVE bunting. This past summer, I had a fabulous opportunity to vent my bunting love… all over my sister’s wedding. (Don’t worry, she was totally on board with it!) Knowing the depth of my love, you’d better believe I literally SQUAWKED when I saw the bunting cake toppers made by Kiki La Ru.

You just think the wedding world will never be able to come up with something new, and then they do, right?! Adorable.

Let’s go ahead and chalk this up as one idea I DEFINITELY wish I’d thought of :)

If you’d like a bunting cake topper of your very own, check out Dawn’s shop right here. She loves custom orders!

Winner :: IceMilk Aprons

by in Main on

It’s almost here, it’s almost here! Thanksgiving is only two short days away! Soon, kitchens across America will be filled with the aroma of turkey roasting and pie cooling. Two of our readers will also be awaiting packages from IceMilk Aprons for their future cooking endeavors!

We asked readers to tell us their favorite recipes for their chance to win an apron from IceMilk Aprons. Congratulations to Jennifer H and Laura!

I am a newlywed (March 2010) and my mother-in-law is the most AMAZING Southern cook there ever was. I am no expert, but I am trying! Although I’ll never cook with the charm, ease, and secret ingredient arsenal as her, I have learned from my MIL that cooking is so much more than putting together ingredients and throwing something in the oven or a pot. It is fun to play around and make what those you love, love to eat!

After we made it together once, I was so honored when she shared one of her special recipes with me and it has quickly become a favorite for my husband and me. I’ve only recently convinced him to love tomatoes, which is a good thing, because if he were comparing my pie to his mom’s, he may be disappointed! Here is her version of Southern Tomato Pie::

1 baked pie crust
sliced tomatoes…enough to fill the crust
2 or 3 green onions chopped on top of the tomatoes
salt and pepper
mixed herbs…yes there is a bottle of these!

topping:
grated sharp cheddar cheese – around 1-1 1/2 cups
mix the cheese with enough mayonnaise to hold the cheese together…then “place” the mixture on top of the pie with your hands
Bake @ 350 until the cheese bubbles

YUM!

Oh how cute! I totally need one of these, since the apron I currently use is from when I was a kid (the pocket is a barn). Not to mention that the flour tends to fly when I bake, since I happily learned not to worry about the portions too much.

My favorite thing to bake is a cake that I only make at Christmas, just to keep it special. Plus, I’m telling you, this cake tastes like Christmas.
White Chocolate Cranberry Cake

6 squares white chocolate for baking
2 sticks of butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
4 eggs
3 T orange zest (CONFESSION: I skip this and add just a dash more orange juice with pulp, since zesting has never really worked for me)
3 T orange juice
2 c flour

2 t baking powder
1-1/2 c fresh or frozen cranberries

Chop the chocolate. Beat together butter, brown sugar, and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs, orange juice and zest, and mix well. Add the flour and baking powder, then stir in the chocolate and cranberries. Bake in a bundt pan at 350 for 1 hour.

Glaze:
Melt together 3 squares of white chocolate and 2T of orange juice over low heat. stir, drizzle over cake, and enjoy. It’s best if you wait until the cake is COMPLETELY cool.

We love Lizzie + Miles’ outdoor garden reception at the Crane Cottage almost as much as their joyous ceremony. Delicate blooms (arranged by Mardee Morris) balance the rustic vibe from the burlap tablecloths, but our very favorite detail is the lovebird-topped cake prepared by the talented staff at the Jekyll Island Club. Open Light Studio has more from this Georgia wedding waiting for you on their blog!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I wanted lots of advice so I planned a weekend of shopping with my mom, sister, and good friend in Atlanta, where my sister lives. I finally found the perfect place called Kelly’s Closet with the perfect dress, a Modern Trousseau. Everyone at Kelly’s Closet was so helpful and creative. They were able to make the dress my very own by removing the sequined sash and creating one made of the same lace from the bolero they designed. In the end, I was able to make my wedding dress uniquely mine.
Describe your wedding flowers: My florist, Mardee Morris, kept the design very organized, yet each detail had its own special “whimsy”. For example, billy button flowers and green orchids were mixed with traditional English garden roses. Inside the reception tent, each floral arrangement was formed within a different blue and white patterned porcelain container. The flowers used were hydrangea and tons of ivy and maidenhair fern, along with garden roses, orchids, beapluerum, freesia, and Casablanca lilies. Mardee collected bottles and apothecary jars for the glass topped café tables and filled them with fresh greenery and single stems of green centered sunflowers, kangaroo paw, lily grass, dahlias, lilies, orchids, and freesia. Touches of fresh lemons and Spanish moss were also placed throughout the venue. The mantles were adorned with pillar candles among more blue and white vases filled with bells of Ireland, hydrangeas, and plumosa fern.
Describe your wedding cake: Our wedding cake was sweet and simple: a lemon sponge cake with layers of Cointreau-laced, raspberry cream filling, and topped with butter cream frosting and fondant. The pastry chef at the Jekyll Island Club tied raffia around each of the four layers and our florist adorned the cake with orchids, roses, and stephanotis jasmine blossoms. My mom made the bird nest cake topper, which contained two feathered lovebirds representing Miles and me. The cake plate was a wonderful, antique, wooden serving platter, which sat upon a family heirloom linen cloth.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moments of our wedding day—besides the ceremony, of course!—were dancing our choreographed polka to Edward Sharpe’s “Home,” the awesome band (The 8-Tracks from Savannah), going away through a gauntlet of giant sparklers on a surrey bike built for two, and the amazing feeling of being so loved!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are so excited about getting back to our lives! I’m working hard to get my graphic design business off the ground, and Miles is back to writing at the local weekly, the Mountain Xpress. We’re looking forward to settling down and possibly making Asheville our permanent home.
