I went to college in Austin (hook ’em!), so Austin weddings will always have a special place in my heart. Claire and Adam did the city proud at their Allan House wedding–it struck the loveliest balance of sentimental, personal, unique, and fun. After a sweet first look and personal letters to each other read at the ceremony, Claire and Adam celebrated their marriage with dancing, emotional toasts (be sure to read about them below!), and even a little ping pong. We’re so glad that Caroline + Ben were on hand to capture every moment, and then share it with us!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Yes! I borrowed my mom’s earrings. My something blue was the tag/logo on my TOMS shoes. I had an old cufflink of my dad’s with his initials on it sewn into the skirt of my dress. He passed away in 2010, so it was an emotional day, and I wanted to incorporate him in little, subtle ways. My something new was my dress!

We said short, traditional vows, but also chose to write letters to each other that were read by the officiant, since we didn’t want to be confined to the format of vows when saying what we wanted to say. Adam’s letter was the perfect combination of sentimental and funny–just like him. I was definitely both laughing and crying throughout the ceremony!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We wanted something central to downtown Austin so our family and friends could enjoy the city for the entire weekend, since most of them were coming from out of town. We loved the relaxed, backyard feel the Allan House provided, as well as the live oak trees. Growing up in Houston, I have always LOVED them, so having the ceremony and reception under a canopy of live oak tree branches was the ideal setting in my mind!

The venue was an old Victorian house and courtyard covered with live oak trees. The food, served family style, was all upscale comfort food–our passed appetizers were lobster corn dogs, bacon-wrapped dates, and tomato soup shooters with grilled cheese wedges. Dinner included short ribs with truffle mash, roasted chicken, green chili mac and cheese, green beans with tomato jam and fried onions, and more. Our late-night snack was frito pies!

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Right after walking down the aisle, I accidentally kissed Adam, so I yelled “Oops!” and burst out laughing. After over a year of planning the wedding, I made the most common sense mistake! It was such a sweet moment, and it immediately took the edge off and made everyone more comfortable and relaxed for the rest of the ceremony. Another memorable moment was hearing the toast that my dad wrote for me and Adam before he died. He had passed away four years earlier, and Adam and I were only dating at the time, but we had been together for awhile, so I think he knew this day was coming, and he wanted us to have something special from him. Overall, when I think back to our wedding, I remember looking into each other’s teary eyes, squeezing each other’s hands, and hearing our letters to each other, all in the presence and with the support of the people we love most in the world. It doesn’t get much better!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I don’t think we could possibly narrow it down, although I did love our life-size cardboard cut out of our dog–my mom wouldn’t let him be the ring bearer, much to my dismay. He wore a bow tie and stood by the front door, greeting guests! I also liked the personal touches that made the wedding “us,” like using a travel coffee table book as our guest book because I love to travel (we asked guests to recommend their favorite place to visit), and writing the table numbers on framed book pages because Adam loves to read. Those little details really made the whole wedding feel more personal and meaningful.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Although we grew up about 45 minutes away from each oher, we met in Nicaragua, of all places, in January 2007, when we were working with a community development non-profit organization (Manna Project International). We became good friends and didn’t start dating until about a year later when we were both back in the States. We are thankful that our relationship started on the strong foundation of being best friends first (as cheesy as that sounds)!
Tell us all about the proposal! We were living in Chicago at the time and often did “tourist-y” things around the city. While visiting the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Adam suggested we take a picture in the Skydeck, a glass ledge/box 103 stories above ground. Right as the picture was being taken, he got down on one knee. Chicago will always hold a special place in our hearts, and I love that we have an awesome picture of the proposal with the city lit up behind (and under!) us!
When did y’all get married? April 26, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, mostly because we wanted to get as many pictures with our wedding party and families done before the ceremony so that we could enjoy the cocktail hour and reception with the rest of the guests. We are nontraditional in a lot of ways, so we didn’t think twice about our decision not to wait until the ceremony to see each other–that wasn’t important or significant to us.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to “Trumpet Voluntary” and one of Adam’s groomsmen played the trumpet–he was awesome! Our first dance was to “Wonderful” by My Morning Jacket, one of our favorite bands, who we’ve seen live and listened to together over the years. We also had a last slow dance to John Legend’s “Stay With You”–we love the lyrics.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. The bride’s cake was very simple, decorated with messy frosting and a few coral peonies. The tiers alternated between white cake with cream cheese and white cake with strawberries. The groom’s cake was chocolate and Dynamo-themed, since Adam is a big soccer fan and Dynamo is the local MLS team.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We saved money by bringing in our own alcohol and returning unopened bottles! We also used a DJ instead of a band.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We just bought a house! And now that we’ll have a yard, we want to get a furry friend for our dog, Pico.

The best kinds of homes are the ones that feel welcoming and comfortable as soon as you walk through the doors, no matter if you’re kin or just an acquaintance of the people who live there. Our history with Christina and Blair goes way back (they modeled in our V6 cover shoot and shared words of wisdom in V7, and Christina is a Blue Ribbon Vendor!), but I’m certain that anyone and everyone will want to pull up a chair at their dining room table or sit down for a slice of pecan pie in their cozy living room. Everything about their Houston home exudes warmth, hospitality, and intentionality, and we’re so thrilled that they gave us a tour, especially now that their house is decked for the holidays!

Thank you so much to Jen Dillender, another beloved Blue Ribbon Vendor, for these lovely photos!

The couple: Christina Leigh Frederick, 28, and Blair Michael Frederick, 30
Years married: 2 years and 3 months
Where you live: Houston, TX is where we call home, but I also spend time in Tulsa, OK where I maintain an office for Christina Leigh Events

Tell us a little bit about yourselves. I love glitter and bows and am the owner of Christina Leigh Events. Blair is an antique hunter who finds new life in fans and guitars, and is a business development manager for GE Oil and Gas. We have two “little girls,” Remi (a petite golden doodle) and Landry (a standard golden doodle), also known as the CLE mascots. We love taking our girls out each weekend and spending time with our families.
Tell us your love story in one sentence. Blair would say when he met me in my sorority house in 2006, he knew I was the one (even though he and I both had significant others at the time), but a span of four years eventually led to dinner with friends, and then daily conversations led to marriage.
Tell us a little bit about where you live. Blair purchased our home in 2011, so I was able to assist with decorating from the beginning. We love that our little area of town is growing and that we have a Whole Foods within walking distance. We also have a new taco and pizza place across the street that have become weekly staples in our not-so diets.

What is your approach to decorating your home for the holidays? Each tree/room in our home gets a different theme. We don’t use “traditional” Christmas red and green when it comes to colors–we use decor that complements each space. The 15’ tree in the living room (I squealed when Blair brought it home for me last year!) is gold and brown. There are deer ornaments for Blair, cross ornaments for Jesus, and big bows for me. The tree in my office is decorated with white ornaments from my great-grandmother (a series of nine hand-sculpted ornaments from a French artist) and my Grammy (gold angels and white wedgwood ornaments). I have added a sweet SW shop ornament to the family heirloom tree as well! Our tree in the game room is decorated with mini football helmets from our alma mater, The University of Tulsa, and football ornaments. The tree in the kitchen matches our drapes and has silver and gold decorations to tie it in with our dinner table. This year, Blair brought home a baby tree for our bedroom, and I love the simplistic white and the smell it adds to our special place. Blair would say my approach is glitter. I wouldn’t argue that. :)
What is a favorite holiday tradition your family has created post-wedding? Before our first Christmas together, I had no clue what “did you find the pickle yet” meant. Blair comes from German heritage and it has been a lot of fun to learn about the prized pickle ornament that is always hidden in his parents’ Christmas tree. We added a pickle to our 15’ tree in our living room, but Blair is not allowed to hide it above 6’. Blair’s family also goes to church, eats appetizers, and opens all presents on Christmas Eve. While I was a little confused at first, this has given us Christmas morning to ourselves to create our own traditions. Waffles, the parade, and hanging out with our doodles is the perfect way for us to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

What different decisions, if any, would you make for your registry if you knew then what you knew now? Blair and I never registered for china. I love to add different napkins and chargers to our great white collection from Pottery Barn to create a formal feel for each dinner we host, but now that we are settling into our style, we have decided to begin collecting MacKenzie-Childs parchment check dishes to act as our china.
Who cooks dinner? We both do. I handle the kitchen and Blair mans the grill. We love fresh grilled chicken and steak with salads and veggies. When I feel brave enough to attempt a baked meal, he washes the lettuce and helps prep the sides.
What’s your favorite place to find recipes? Since my mom and her mom were such great cooks, I love calling my mom for recipes. My Grammy and I were also both in the Junior League, and her old Tulsa cookbooks full of her notes, as well as my Houston cookbooks, are the perfect places to find great dishes to try and goodies to bake!

Tell us about the process of moving in together. Do you have any tips for blending your two styles? Since Blair worked in international business before we got married, he still called his childhood house his home, as I did with my mom, so neither of us had a ton of things to move in together. For us, building our home was a ground-up task from the beginning. Even though I did move the cowhide rug from the living room into our game room, balancing his cowboy boots with my pearls has made for a fun pairing. I look at the decor in our home much like I looked at designing our wedding–each thing we add has a purpose or meaning, and is fairly neutral so things can change with seasons and holidays.

What most makes your house feel like home? When Blair lived here before we got married, it was really empty, so when we got married, I loved adding things that were “home” to each of us. For me, our magnolia leaf garland in the kitchen reminds me of my Grammy’s huge magnolia tree that I grew up under. Our Mr. and Mrs. chair ties from our wedding now hang above our bed to remind us of that special day. It’s the small things that make a big difference in reminding us of our roots and our marriage.
What is your favorite memory from your wedding? Blair may have been most excited about the food: steak sliders, chicken, and full ears of grilled corn. When it was time for our grand exit, he made sure our to-go food was in tow. I was so hungry when we arrived at our hotel that I sat down on the bed in my dress and immediately grabbed the bag of food, only to find 10 ears of corn. With no butter or salt, Blair opted to phone in some delivery pizza for our 2 A.M. dinner. Eating on the bed, fully dressed in our wedding attire, was the perfect moment to recap the day.

Where do you splurge and where do you save when decorating? What are some of your favorite sources for home things? We definitely splurge on good quality furniture. The first piece of furniture we purchased was our dining room table, follow by our dresser that is large enough for both of us. We save with the little things, like throw pillows in different colors for different seasons and small things for our entry table. HomeGoods, Pottery Barn sales, and a few local stores are favorite sources for accent items.

Is there anything else you think our readers would love to know? Blair often works from home, so for our first anniversary I took the traditional gift of paper and the modern gift of a clock, and turned it into an office. It’s a place just for him that is rich with wood, his elk antlers, and his guitar collection. I did get away with adding a small tree for Christmas, too (no glitter or bows on this one though)!
What is one small way you love or serve your spouse? Blair has the heart of a servant. He is always at my events to help with setup or strike, and to make sure I eat. I serve Blair by making our bed every day. He is often up before me and I could go a full day without making the bed, but I know it’s important to him to have a tidy room.

What’s your best tip for balancing your relationship and other life priorities? Since my office is in our home, I have to be really intentional about turning off the light and walking away from my computer and phone at quitting time each day. When Blair gets home, that’s my cue to take time for us. We spend weeknights just the two of us and add in time for extended family on the weekends.
This year, our family is most excited about… some exciting new business ventures we have been working on together–we can’t wait to share soon! Two minds are better than one, and when the other mind is your other half, it makes it twice as great!

What is your favorite part of being married? Being that our dating and engagement was long distance, marriage meant living under one roof. It’s so fun to wake up next to my best friend and spend weekends together instead of on FaceTime.
How do you navigate the holidays with your extended families? With my family in Oklahoma, we make one holiday trip per year to Tulsa, this year being Thanksgiving. With Blair’s family down the road from us, we’ll be celebrating Christmas Eve with them, and eating Christmas lunch with them as well. Family is such a big part of who we are and we adore being around loved ones during such a special time of year!

We’re so grateful to Christina and Blair for sharing their hearts and home with us! Be sure to follow along with them:

For Britt and Travis’ friends and family, this wedding was fifteen years in the making. After growing up together, their decade and a half of friendship culminated with the most overwhelming (in a great way!) experience of their lives–their vows! Britt and Travis chose to devote their lives to each other through personal vows built from pieces of their favorite parts of friends’ ceremonies. Such a neat way to incorporate loved ones into a wedding day! We could not support Britt and Travis’ sentiments on their wedding more: while the details are nice, the most important thing was the people around them and the covenant that they made.

Big hugs to Sara & Rocky for sharing this sweet day with us!

Finding my wedding dress was a lot more challenging than I had expected. I wanted to feel like a bride, and for some reason, I just didn’t in anything I tried on. My youngest sister lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas and her roommate had suggested a store called Low’s in Brinkley. My mom and I decided to make a fun trip out of it and flew out to Little Rock one weekend. When we drove into Brinkley, I was a bit apprehensive, because it felt like we were in a ghost town. This three-story dress shop was just about the only thing still open, but it was well worth the drive! The Allure gown that I chose was exactly what I was looking for–I just felt like a bride in it. The combination of lace and tulle with some very subtle beaded accents fit my personality perfectly!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? This was a really hard decision for us. As someone who has photographed weddings, I understand how sweet and special a first look can be, but I wanted to experience all of the emotions and excitement that comes with not seeing your future husband until walking down the aisle. I also wanted the time before our ceremony to be spent with our individual families and wedding parties. I knew that if we had a first look, I would fill the time with pictures and tasks that I needed to let go of. I’m so grateful that we went that route, because it allowed us to enjoy sweet time with family and friends that we wouldn’t have had otherwise.

Over the past five years, I’ve been to and photographed a lot of weddings, and for some reason, I had decided to write down parts of the vows that I really loved and remembered. I went back and asked several of those friends if I could borrow parts of their vows, and we put them together to come up with our own version of vows. Our favorite phrase was the very end, and it said: “Letting nothing divide us for we are made new; all our days forward, you are my beloved and I am yours.” We intentionally chose the words “letting nothing divide us” because we believe that it’s our responsibility to fight for our marriage, and that it is a choice to let nothing divide the covenant that we have made both with the Lord and with each other.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Saying our vows to one another was pretty surreal. To think back on 15 years of friendship and see all that the Lord had done to get us to that exact moment was easily one of the most overwhelming experiences of our lives.

Long before we got engaged, a family friend purchased an organic pecan farm in our hometown that they invited us to come and see. They shared with us their vision of hosting gatherings of all types, providing education about organic farming to students, and creating community, with the ultimate goal of serving the Lord through this gift. Once Travis proposed, I didn’t even think twice about where I wanted our wedding to be. When we got engaged, Chandelier Grove was simply a farm house and the pecan grove, and that was more than I had ever dreamed of. Over the course of our 11 month engagement, they purchased two 200-year-old barns from an Amish family in Canada and had them resurrected on the property. One of my favorite parts of the property is the 2000 wood slats that Stacey hand stained for the barn and chapel. As she stained the ceiling, she prayed over the property. Each time a verse would come to mind, she would carve the verse into the wood, so if you look up, you can faintly see the carvings of scripture all over the barn and chapel. There are literally thousands of little details like this on the property–it’s incredible!

Describe your wedding flowers. My sweet friend, Stacey Crowe, who owns Cornelius in Tomball, Texas, went above and beyond to make sure that every little detail was beautiful! I knew that I wanted lots of beautiful earth tones and textures that would complement the property, so we used things like brunia nodiflora, curly willow, pampas grass, thistle, seeded eucalyptus, scabies, plumosa, lotus pods, privet berry, apricot stock, and tuberose, as well as some of the magnolia off of the property. I wanted the colors to be a mixture of soft and rich tones, so we went with blush tones in protea and garden roses, combined with the rich colors coming from blackberries, garden roses and dahlias. After our wedding, Stacey went to my parents’ house, picked all of the extra flowers up, rearranged all of them, and took them to local nursing homes. If that doesn’t speak volumes about her character and her heart for people, I don’t know what does!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I grew up going to The Whistle Stop in Tomball. They are known for their great desserts, so I decided to ask them if they might be up for attempting a dessert bar for our wedding. They made a three-tiered Italian cream wedding cake with cream cheese and pecan icing, a triple layered chocolate cake for the groom’s cake, samoa and heath bar pretzel rods, butter banana rum cupcakes with pecan penuche icing, pineapple carrot cake, key lime pie, and hummingbird cake. I don’t think there was a single thing left from the dessert bar at the end of the wedding. They did an amazing job!

Our engagement season came with a lot of trying life circumstances at home. If there was a challenge that could happen–job change, moving, terminal illness–you name it, it happened. But in all of that, there was this very real, very constant reminder of how fragile and special life is. It kept us grounded, and forced us to really consider what is important. Don’t get me wrong–I love the details and all of the pretty things, but at the end of the day, those things had absolutely no bearing on the purpose of our wedding day. Rather, it was the people around us and the covenant that we made that mattered most.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Travis and I met in 7th grade in Tomball, Texas. We became part of the same friend group fairly quickly and spent most of the last 15 years as really close friends. My parents and siblings have always loved Travis, and joked about how they were going to find a way to make him part of our family–my sisters even made him sign an “adoption contract” to ensure that he wasn’t going anywhere regardless of who he married! Clearly, we weren’t getting the hint! In the summer of 2012, I took a job in Missouri, which meant that we were 12 hours away from one another. About two weeks after I moved, I got a phone call from Travis asking if he could come visit me one weekend. I honestly didn’t think a thing about it! We spent the entire weekend hanging out with my sister, hiking the Ozarks, and catching up on life, and then he went home. I figured that I would see him again at Christmas or the following summer when I was home, but two weeks later, he came back to visit again, and this persisted every few weeks for months! A couple months into his visits, he sat me down and told me that when I was ready, he would like the chance to pursue me. It took me awhile to come around, but I finally agreed to go on one date. We dated for a year and got married in October 2013. I think that everyone we know had been asking when this would happen since we were 12!
Tell us all about the proposal! In October 2013, we had gone up to Austin, Texas to see Travis’ dad for the weekend. Travis told me before we left that his cousin was running a marathon in Austin and wanted to see us while we were in town. I had my suspicions that something was up because he told me that we had to get breakfast with them and would need to leave super early to get there. Last I checked, no one finishes a marathon before 7 a.m., but who was I to question what the athlete had deemed a reasonable time? I noticed pretty quickly that we were not headed to a restaurant when Travis pulled over on the side of the road by Zilker Park. He walked me through the woods and down a trail to Town Lake, where a canoe was waiting at the edge of the water. From there, we paddled down the lake to a dock that was lit up by candles, with breakfast and coffee waiting. One of our favorite times of the day is breakfast, so he knew that it would mean a lot to me to have a sunrise proposal. I only finished about half of my cup of coffee because I was so nervous, but Travis kept encouraging me to finish it. Finally, he got impatient and told me that if I wasn’t going to drink the coffee, I should just throw it into the lake. What I didn’t know was that at the bottom of the coffee cup, he had written “Marry me, Britt?” When I finally saw it, he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. Before I knew it, all of my siblings and parents came out of the woods where they had been videotaping and photographing that moment. I had always told Travis that I wanted my family to be there, so he flew all of my siblings in from California, Colorado, and Arkansas to make sure that they were part of the day. Then, to top it off, he had scheduled time for my mom and sisters to go look at wedding dresses with me, since we all lived in different states. It was a pretty incredible day that I will never, ever forget!

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I’m a big believer in small business. Every business has to start somewhere, and that means that someone has to take a chance on them. I chose to work with a lot of creatives who had never actually executed a wedding because they didn’t have the demand that a lot of well-known vendors do, so they were more reasonably priced. It was exciting to work with people who were so eager to have the opportunity, and who paid such close attention to details. They all did a phenomenal job!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We just purchased a 1928 craftsman-style house in the heart of Fort Worth, Texas. We are so excited to make it a home and start hosting our own gatherings. We LOVE community, and we look forward to seeing what the Lord will do with this gift.

Hi Tori! Thanks for your comment, it sure is a beautiful space. We looked around, but unfortunately cannot locate their contact information. We believe it might be a private property. We do have some great venues in the Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory! https://southernweddings.com /vendor-category/venue/ Hope you find the perfect place. xo! Marissa
