Who’s already thinking about Valentine’s Day plans?! While I love a delicious dinner out, John and I usually opt for something else on February 14th, since restaurants can be crowded and expensive in the evening. If you’d like to do something out of the ordinary, too, we’ve rounded up three of our favorite date ideas with the help of Texas jewelry company Bailey, Banks, and Biddle. (And just saying: if your love language leans toward gifts, you might want to leave this browser open where your significant other can see it… any of these pieces we’re sporting would make an amazing Valentine’s Day present!)

Before we get to the date ideas, though, I want to make SURE you don’t miss the amazing giveaway we’re hosting with Bailey, Banks, and Biddle!! I know, we usually put these at the bottom of the post, but this one is just too good for you to miss…

From left to right: Statement Round Quilted Engament Ring, Intricate Basket Engagement Ring, and Quilted French Pave Princess Cut Engagement Ring, all by A. JAFFE

One lucky person will WIN his or her choice of one of three A. JAFFE engagement ring settings and a .55 carat loose diamond. We saw these rings in person to photograph them, and let me tell you: they are extremely beautiful. Whether you’re engaged or not or already have an engagement ring or not, ENTER below! One of these would make a great right-hand ring, too :)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Official rules for this giveaway can be found here.

And now, on to the date nights! First up, Kristin and Kyle opted for a mid-morning get-together. Many of y’all already know our Editor-in-Chief’s love language is brunch, so pancakes and swirly coffee were just the tickets for their love day celebration. If you’d like to try a brunch date yourself, head out on the weekend or take a few hours off work mid-week (a sure-fire way to beat the crowds!).

All photos by Blue Ribbon Vendor Jacqui Cole. Kristin’s jewelry includes pearl earrings, a pearl bracelet, and a pearl cuff bracelet. Girl likes her pearls :)

Date Idea No. 2: Marissa and Brandon also chose to forgo dinner, and instead focused on the best part of any meal: sweets! They hit up three different dessert spots for what we like to call a “dessert crawl.” Ideally, your dessert locations would be in walking distance from each other, so you can burn off a few calories in between indulging! “Since I work days, and Brandon works most evenings, the ‘dessert crawl; was such a fun way to celebrate without the time constraint of a dinner reservation,” says Marissa. “We even chose to get our last desert to go, so we could enjoy some time walking and chatting!”

All photos by Blue Ribbon Vendor Jessica Bordner. Marissa’s jewelry includes a diamond station necklace, stackable rings (available in store or via special order), and a custom A.JAFFE map necklace. Brandon is wearing a Jack Mason watch.

Date Idea Number 3: If you don’t want to brave the crowds at all, you can try what John and I did, and order in! We picked up pasta from our favorite local spot, then gathered all of the throw pillows from the rest of our house and cozied up in front of the fireplace. For dessert, we made these molten chocolate lava cakes – YUM!

All photos by Blue Ribbon Vendor Julia Wade.

There you have it! Three easy and fun Valentine’s Day date ideas, and a great source for a Valentine’s Day present, if you’re looking for one :) Don’t forget to enter our engagement ring giveaway at the top of the post, and please tell me: what do you have planned for Valentine’s Day?

This post is brought to you by Bailey, Banks, and Biddle. Thank you so much for your support of the brands who make Southern Weddings possible!

I and my husband have different schedule for Vday… so i planned to have a post celebration og sunday.. Maybe a dinner date and watch a movie after.. for me true meaning of Valentines day is not how much you spend or buying expensive gifts but to make your special someone feels how you truly love them and valued… I may not have much money even how i wanted to get him a nice stuff but being with him is priceless specially on heart day… Happy Valentines Day to all!! And to all folks behind this… I do really love your rings and hope i could wear one of them oneday…. Goodluck!

My parents named me thinking I would be a southern belle as my father’s family was from the south. Whenever I visit the south I always feel like it is Deja Vu.
These rings are beautiful! Recently married, my engagement ring was my husbands grandmother’s over 100 years old. While it has sentimental value, it is showing its age and I would love have my own ring to pass down.
These rings are gorgeous and thank you so much for making it possible to win one.

I remember feeling a lot of pressure as the date of my first wedding anniversary neared. It seemed like a momentous occasion, and I wanted to celebrate it in a meaningful, memorable way! In the end, I’m not sure if our celebration counted as “momentous,” but it was very us — we spent the day at the beach, then splurged on a nice dinner out where we exchanged heartfelt letters, a nod to the traditional first anniversary gift of paper.

Ever since, we’ve loved combining an adventure, delicious food, quality time, and a gift keyed to the traditional anniversary gifts to mark another year of marriage. If you need a refresher, here you go:

To our sweet brides who were married last year: this one’s for you! We’ve brainstormed a few of our favorite and most creative “paper” anniversary gifts to give and to get, and here they are…

An album of wedding photos. In addition to the options from your photographer, we love Artifact Uprising and MILK Books.
A book of Instagram photos from your first year. Chat Books makes it so easy to upload right from your phone!
A framed keepsake. Maybe your wedding invitation, an art print, or a favorite photograph from your wedding or first year as married people. More ideas here.
Art from your hand-lettered wedding vows. John and I are still completely charmed by the watercolors Simply Jessica Marie made for us!
A book. You could exchange favorite novels, buy a new devotional to do together, pick out a gorgeous coffee table volume, try a new cookbook, or look for a rare first edition.
Stationery. There are gorgeous readymade options available, or you could order a monogrammed version or even commission a set with your likeness!
A brush lettering kit. So you can create your own beautiful works of art on paper.
A custom painting to commemorate your first home. We love the sweet versions drawn up by Little House Shop.
A board game to play together. Cardboard is pretty much paper, right? :) Or these pretty playing cards.
Tickets. Plane tickets, tickets to a show, tickets to a game… the possibilities are endless!
A sweet card. To tell him how much you love him. Because really, isn’t that the best gift, anyway? We love Shannon Kirsten’s designs.

What do you think, friends? Any suggestions to add to our list? I’d love to hear!!

I gave my husband a big framed world map for our first anniversary that we can add push pins to all the places we’ve been together. We both love it and I think we will have it forever!

  2. avatar Valery reply

For our paper anniversary my husband and I gave each other a year of dates! We wrote 12 date ideas on little slips of paper. Then we put them in a jar with cash (more paper!). We’ve gone on one date every month and it’s been such a great way to make sure we’re spending meaningful time together each month.

I got my husband a subscription to a journal he was always tracking down/borrowing, but for something less academic you could consider a magazine subscription!

Oh, so I’ve got to get silverware for our upcoming anniversary. Didn’t know that.

Have you heard? It’s Engagement Celebration Week! Whether you’ve been engaged for two days or twelve months, we invite you to join the party and celebrate like you said yes yesterday. Upload a proposal or ring shot to our hashtag, enter to win giveaways all week on Instagram, or take 20% off our wedding planner with code JOYFULLYENGAGED. We can’t wait to cheer you on!!

The first item most brides look to book is the wedding venue — and with good reason! Your venue sets the tone for everything that is to come, it often helps determine your wedding date, and it can take up a large chunk of your wedding budget. Many brides or grooms also often have a sentimental attachment to the spot they choose to say “I do,” so (as with many wedding decisions) there’s an additional emotional factor to consider.

Since we know many of you are at the beginning of your engagement (how exciting!!), we wanted to share some of the most important things to consider when choosing a wedding venue! To do so, we invited three of the event planners at Keeneland, one of Kentucky’s premier venues, to offer their tips, and combined them with some of the best info from the Joyful Wedding Planner. We’ve sprinkled a few lovely photos from Keeneland’s various venues throughout, too!

Honey Heart Photography

1. The Particulars of Your Wedding. Know your (approximate) guest count, (desired) date and (approximate) budget before starting the search. It’s okay to not have them all set in stone, but you want to have at least a ballpark for each! If you have any must-haves (great view, garden setting, white walls, etc.), write these down, too. Use this information to make a list of possible venues, then narrow it down to your top picks before scheduling tours.

Honey Heart Photography

2. Your Love Story. Do you have a special tie to a location or city? Your wedding should be filled with your unique love story, and your venue is a great place to start! The Keeneland folks love hearing from brides who met their fiancé on property, grew up coming to the track, or were proposed to in between races.

Nina and Wes

3. Catering. There are several benefits of choosing a venue with an in-house catering company (especially if it’s a fabulous one, like Keeneland’s!). Having the food prepared by an in-house team means you don’t need to create a kitchen from the ground-up, you usually don’t have to worry about renting china and silverware, and you know your venue and catering team will work together seamlessly. Of course, if you have a specific caterer you’ve been dying to work with, or you have a particular vision in mind (like food trucks), you’ll want to look for a venue that allows outside vendors.

Lang Thomas

4. Coordination. At Southern Weddings, we believe that every couple should have at minimum a day-of coordinator, even if it’s just a trustworthy and organized family friend. Whether you’re planning to hire a full-service planner or not, make sure that you meet with and get along with the venue contact who will be on site during your celebration! Ask what level of involvement they’ll have with your planning, too.

VRV Photographie

5. Venue Specifics. The frustrating thing about the wedding venue search is that you’re usually comparing apples to oranges, because every venue builds their packages differently and charges accordingly. Make sure to gather as much information as possible! In addition to our basic questions, below, here are a few next-level Q’s:

— How long do we have the venue on the day of our wedding? Will we have access early to set-up?
— Does our rental include tables, chairs, china, a dance floor, a stage, or any other rentals?
— How will our venue coordinator assist us?
— Do you have enough parking to accommodate our guest count? Do you require valet, and is it additional?
— Restrooms: are they big enough and nice enough for your taste?
— What is the rain plan?

6. Photos. Does the venue itself photograph well? Are there pretty spots for portraits? If not, is the surrounding area accessible, and a good fit for your aesthetic?

Honey Heart Photography

Thanks to the ladies at Keeneland for chiming in today with their expert advice! And remember: as you sift through information from your top picks, make visits to each, and consider your options, don’t be afraid to ask questions, get proposals, and use the expertise of the on-site coordinator!

Sending wishes that you all find your perfect wedding venue match as quick as a Kentucky thoroughbred! :)
