Thanks to this year’s very long winter, I feel like I have been dreaming of summer for months, and Maria and Jack’s cheery wedding is the perfect eye candy to hold me over until June! A talented graphic designer, Maria took great care in creating branding for the day that perfectly captured their whimsical, colorful, Southern style. From the invitations down to their favors (jam jars in honor of their new married monogram: JAM!), every detail of Maria and Jack’s big day was thoughtful and joyful!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Our invitation said it best: “Maria and Jack met at The Baseball Tavern in October 2008. She was new to town. He was visiting from Vermont. They struck up a conversation and he got her number. As luck would have it, he had a job interview in Boston the following week. He asked her to lunch and that was the beginning of their long-distance relationship. It went like this for seven months: Maria visited Jack in Vermont. Jack visited Maria in Boston. Jack graduated, passed for the bar, (fished when he could), and got a job in Maine. Maria began her adventure – living, working, and enjoying life in Beantown. Their journey continued for another two years and three months. Maria bused up to Maine. Jack (and Mac) drove down to Boston. Eventually, the stars aligned and Maria ventured north. They made a home together on Maple Street. After just a few short months, true to form, the call of duty brought them to Buffalo. It took about three and a half years, five cities, 16,737 miles, 37 bus tickets, and 1,040 phone calls to realize that a fleeting moment can become forever.”

As many brides do, I fell in love with a dress I saw in a magazine. I knew I was going to be in Atlanta for a weekend that spring, so I called around, found the dress at a local boutique, and gathered all the ladies in my family for a fun day of dress shopping. I tried it on and absolutely loved it, but I had a feeling I should keep looking, so we headed over to Bridals by Lori to try on a few more. As soon as we arrived, my Nana insisted I try on a Spanish-inspired dress she saw on the mannequin (Nana was born and raised in Spain, so it was a must). As soon as I tried on Nana’s pick, I immediately knew it was “the one”–we all did. It was the perfect way to incorporate my Spanish heritage into our wedding, especially because Nana had picked it out.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided not do a first look on our wedding day because we loved the idea of seeing each other at the altar for the first time. That being said, I’m Catholic but we wanted to be married outside, so in order to be married in the Catholic church, we had a small ceremony on Friday before the rehearsal dinner. It was such a special, intimate experience shared with only our immediate families, and it allowed us to be jitter-free the following day.

We stayed the weekend, got ready, were married, celebrated, and danced the night away just steps from my parents’ home in the North Carolina mountains at Mountaintop Golf and Lake. I would highly recommend doing as much as you can in a single location–it made for a stress-free day!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We exchanged traditional Catholic vows. We loved the simplicity and meaning behind those vows, and although they have been repeated by millions of couples, these vows were ours and ours alone. On a somewhat related note, the priest that married Jack and I had also married my parents (who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this fall!). We always knew that we wanted him to marry us, and when he agreed, we knew the ceremony was going to be incredibly special.

My something old was the diamond in my engagement ring, which was Jack’s grandmother’s. My something new was my fabulous dress. My something borrowed were gold coins called arras, lent to us by a relative from Spain that she used during her wedding ceremony. My something blue was actually a surprise–my dad’s parents have passed, so my family had one of my grandmother’s handkerchiefs sewn into the underside of my dress and embroidered in blue with a lyric from “I Hope You Dance,” a song that is very special to our family.

I would classify our wedding as rustic chic with lots of fun Southern details. Guests received welcome bags that included a wedding weekend itinerary with a thoughtful introduction to the North Carolina mountains, a local brew from Jack’s hometown, Georgia peach gummies, and North Carolina peanuts. Upon arriving to the ceremony, guests received mason jars filled with sweet tea and a Kraft paper bag program holding a pair of branded white wayfarers, because the ceremony was facing the sun. Mint juleps were served at cocktail hour, an assortment of mini pies were for dessert, and we had a whiskey/cigar bar to enjoy during dance breaks. My favorite Southern detail was the branded jar of jam, because our monogram is JAM!

Describe your wedding flowers. I absolutely love mixing and matching bold colors, patterns, and textures, so we chose a dozen different fabrics within our poppy and mint color scheme and had runners made for our gorgeous farm tables. Every other table had a different runner and different flower arrangements. There were heads of cabbage in wooden boxes, poppies in clear glass bottles, peonies in milk glass vases, hydrangeas in vintage tins, and succulents in mercury glass vases. Every table was so fun and different, while keeping a cohesive overall look. With a TON of help from my mom, sister, planner, and florist, my vision was brought to life, and let me tell you, it was even prettier in person.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Instead of traditional wedding cake, we opted for a variety of pies. We make rhubarb pies every other weekend during the summer, so we shared a rhubarb pie while our guests chose from blueberry, apple, cherry, and rhubarb. For the groom’s cake, I surprised Jack with hundreds of Oreos (he’s obsessed!) stacked in the shape of a cake. It was a hit!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Jack and I shared our first dance as husband and wife to “Swept Away” by the Avett Brothers. We went to their concert on our second date and we’ve always loved their music, especially the lyrics to that song. My dad and I danced to “My Maria” by Brooks & Dunn, a song we had danced to many times before/since, but none of which were nearly as special as on that day.

Tell us all about the proposal! Jack proposed on March 9, 2012, shortly after we moved to Buffalo, NY. It started out just like any other Friday night. I had not yet started my new job, so I ran a bunch of errands earlier that day and had just come from the gym to pick Jack up from work. My birthday was earlier that week, so the plan was for us to walk our dog along the Lake Erie waterfront and head home to get ready for dinner. As we were walking and talking, I mentioned that I had found a great deal on his favorite shaving cream, to which he replied, “Oh, I got you something today too.” Just as I was thinking, What could it possibly be, you were at the office all day! he said, “Well, I thought we could get married next spring” and pulled out a little black box. Although we had been dating for over three years (most of which was long distance), moved together twice, and talked about marriage numerous times, that sentence stopped me dead in my tracks (and made me drop our dog’s leash…we’re still not sure where he ran off to during those five minutes of sheer bliss). Jack got down on one knee, poured his heart out, and asked me to be his wife. It was casual, unexpected, and more perfect than I could have ever imagined. To top it all off, Jack surprised me with my parents and sister who had come into town to celebrate for the weekend.

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 177
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We each selected a reading that was meaningful to us. I fell in love with Genesis 2:18-24 and Jack chose a quote from A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. Together, these two readings represent us as a couple.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My favorite detail was hands down our wedding paper suite. The paper goods were extremely important to me, so I teamed up with a friend to create the wedding suite of my dreams. From (literally) telling the craziness that is our love story with letterpressed invitations, to naming table numbers after places that are near and dear to our hearts, to designing labels for the sweet little jam jar favors, we created a beautiful, cohesive brand for our wedding that truly captured the essence of who we are as a couple.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was planning from afar. From video chats with vendors, to early morning phone calls, to venue visits (both with and without me and Jack), we are forever indebted to our parents, siblings, planner, and everyone who helped make this challenge a blessing in disguise.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We did some serious homework when it came to selecting vendors. We made sure that each and every vendor was not only a good fit for us and our vision, but our budget. We identified and focused our budget on the specific things that were very important to us and saved on other areas that we agreed we could do without.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? As my dad and I spent some amazing quality father/daughter time, we watched guests arrive and the ceremony begin. I’ll never forget seeing Jack walk down the stairs to the altar. As soon as the doors opened and my dad and I started walking down the aisle, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. After my mom and dad gave me away, Jack was so excited he tried to kiss me the second we got to the altar!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? My advice may seem like an oxymoron, but it would be to plan and enjoy. Put in the legwork up front by allowing family and friends to chip in, building an all-star team of vendors, putting together a timeline, and a list of “must haves.” By doing each of these things, you’ll be able to truly enjoy every moment of the day you’ve been looking forward to your entire life.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We spent an unbelievable honeymoon bike riding through Spain and (reluctantly) returned back to real life. We genuinely love Buffalo, but once we start thinking about a family of our own, we’re hoping to venture South to be closer to our families. Also, shortly after our wedding, the friend I had worked with to create our wedding paper suite started a wedding branding company called Mia Maria Design!

Fair warning, y’all–today’s couple is really cute. I loved reading Lauren and Cole’s story, getting a peek at their secretly-videotaped proposal, and finally, admiring the way their gorgeous fall wedding came together. Lauren described the venue as the “perfect merging” of their personalities, but it goes beyond that as well–there are so many details at their wedding that represent them both individually and as a couple. I think every bride and groom wants their guests to leave their wedding saying the celebration was “so them,” and I can only imagine how much Lauren and Cole were told those exact words!

The first time I went to try dresses on, I brought a group of six special women with me. I tried on some amazing dresses that day and had a blast, but didn’t find the dress for me. My mom and I spent a few more weekends searching and finally ended up at the Neiman Marcus bridal salon. Ironically, this salon was where my aunt, mom, and cousin all found their wedding dresses. I tried on a few dresses, all with lots of texture, and had some great options, but when I put on Vera Wang’s Jasmine dress, I fell in love. As much as I didn’t think it would happen to me, I started glowing and couldn’t stop smiling. It was the dress I knew I could walk toward Cole in.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, we did. It was more about logistics in the beginning, but I am so glad we did it. It was harder than I had thought it would be to not see Cole all day on the biggest day of our relationship so far. Our first look was a reality check of what this day was about–Cole, me, and God. When we finally saw each other, I felt so joyful and at ease.

What made you choose your venue? It was absolutely gorgeous and we wanted to have a destination wedding without it being a true “destination.” Since Cole and I went to different colleges in different states, we have so many friends spread across the country. We figured they all had to travel anyway, so why not have them come to a city that has so much to offer our guests? Camp Lucy was the perfect merging of mine and Cole’s personalities–relaxed and natural, but elegant.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we decided there were vows out there that were already beautifully written. My favorite part of our vows read: “I promise to love you with all of my heart, and to be true and faithful, patient, kind, and unselfish in this love.”
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? This is a hard question–so much of it is incredibly memorable. One that sticks out specifically was during our ceremony. When we were exchanging vows, Ocho, our dog, spoke up too with a grunt-moan noise. It was hilarious! The crowd laughed and our pastor announced that Ocho said “yes” too.

Describe your wedding flowers. UNBELIEVABLE! The ladies at Gypsy Floral outdid themselves. They made my mood board of dreamy images come to life. The flowers were incredibly lush and elegant, and they made the whole venue feel complete and magical.

My mom handmade Mr. and Mrs. pillows for our sweetheart table, which each had pins and keepsakes about Cole and I, like a vintage Jayhawk badge and a vintage Alabama banner. My mom also made beautiful boards displaying all of our family wedding photos, going back to our great grandmothers. The wooden cross we used during the ceremony was the same cross my best friend used for her wedding. We even pulled a selection of vintages and labels of Cabernet Savignon from my parents’ wine cellar to serve at the reception.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. The bride’s cake was a simple four-tier cake with a combination of lemon cake with lemon mousse and white cake with strawberry Grand Marnier filling. It had a wonderful buttercream icing applied with textured detail and lined with greenery by our florists. The groom’s cake was a round chocolate cake filled with a layer of chocolate mousse and raspberry purée and covered with chocolate ganache. It was topped with a large University of Alabama seal in fondant.

For our first dance, we had our band, Blind Date, learn Josh Abbot Band’s “She’s Like Texas.” During our long-distance relationship, it was one of the songs Cole sent me the lyrics to, and it has been one of “our” songs since then. We knew our first dance had to be a country song and something we could two-step to.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met sometime between sixth and seventh grade. Our families were connected through several people and activities, so we just got used to seeing each other around. We “dated” in middle school, if you can even call it that, for about a month before I broke up with him the day after Valentine’s Day! From then until our freshman year of college, we were good friends–he was the guy I could always depend on. He was even my prom date! We went our separate ways in college; he attended the University of Alabama and I went to the University of Kansas. At the beginning of sophomore year, I couldn’t deny my feelings anymore–I decided the moment I saw Cole back home over Thanksgiving break that I was going to tell him how I felt. Thankfully, our families planned to spend Thanksgiving together at our lake house, so I knew I would have the opportunity. After dinner one evening, we walked up to the top of the boat dock to look at the stars and I told him that I wanted a relationship with him. Thank goodness he felt the same way and had since 7th grade!
Tell us all about the proposal! Cole invited a few of our friends to the lake house the last weekend in September. It was cool and rainy outside, so we were all hanging out on the boat dock. Between rounds of a card game, Cole walked upstairs to the top of our dock. I eventually wandered up there to see what he was doing in the rain! He started hugging me and I heard his heart pounding in his chest. Then, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said yes, of course, and then our friends ran upstairs screaming. Little did I know, all of this was being filmed on a GoPro camera. It can be seen here. Cole then made up a pretty convincing story that our good friends called and said there was something wrong with their neighbor’s dock. Cole, being the great guy he is, offered to go check it out, so we all loaded up in the car, drove over to their house, and got one of the biggest surprises! Everyone–our families, some of my friends, and his friends–were waiting for us. He even flew in my sister from Portland and my dearest cousin from Montana! When I saw them, I lost all control–it was definitely one of the best days of my life. We proceeded to party from noon till midnight.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had a wonderful quartet for music during seating and through our cocktail hour. Cole is a man of tradition and used to play the cello, so he wanted me to walk down the aisle to “Canon in D.” Cole also picked our recessional–much less traditional, but very fun, “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns and Roses. One of my favorite things about our ceremony was when my aunt and cousin sang the Lennon and Maisy version of “I won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz during communion.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I borrowed my cousin’s garter, which both she and my sister wore at their weddings. My something old was my emerald necklace, given to me by my grandmother when I was a child. She and my grandfather had purchased one for each granddaughter on a trip to Africa. My something new was a gift from Cole–emerald earrings that he gave me the morning of the wedding to match my necklace.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Cowboy boots all around! Cole’s were his custom-made Alabama boots that seem to be glued to his feet! The groomsmen sported eggplant bow ties. All the meats served were local game meats: quail, venison and beef. We also served local Dripping Springs vodka, Tito’s vodka, Shiner Bock, and Fireman’s 4 beers.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Planning was surprisingly smooth. The most difficult thing overall was probably planning the wedding from out of town, since we had limited time to meet with different vendors. Thankfully, we had a great wedding planner who filtered through various vendors and would set up 2-3 options for us to meet with when we could.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our wedding would not have been the same without ALL the vendors, but I was exceptionally happy to have the ladies of Gypsy Floral. They understood my vision for the wedding and I had complete faith in their ability to transform the venue into my dream space.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Have a detailed rain plan!! Although, I refused to think about the possibility of it raining, our wedding planner, Ashlee Voda, made sure we had one in place, just in case. Well, we were in that “case,” not just because of the moisture, but because of the 35 degree temperatures! Be prepared so that if it comes to that, the stress won’t make the situation worse.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We bought a house a couple of months before we got married so we could begin to do some work on it. Absolutely crazy idea–talk about a lot going on! But, it was amazing to come home from our honeymoon and spend our first night in our new home together.

I can only imagine how much Haley and Dylan’s wedding from V6 inspired not only countless brides, thanks to the bright color palette and unique design elements, but also, many Southern grooms, thanks to the delectable-looking bacon bar! This fun Charleston wedding is a feast to the eyes, as well as a fabulous representation of Haley and Dylan’s self-proclaimed “over the top” personalities. They chose the bold colors and details to reflect their belief in living life to the fullest. Considering how much fun it sounds like everyone had, I’m sure the night was a wonderful reminder of this for their guests as well!

A Charleston Bride does such a great job with florals, I didn’t have to give much direction. Our flowers were bright red, pinks and corals, and most were displayed in a variety of gold containers. They were a mix of spray roses, cymbidium orchids, tulips, dahlia, hydrangea, peonies, ranunculus, celosia and lisianthus.

Being in the wedding industry, I always wanted to choose a time of year that was considered “off-season.” However, Dylan proposed in November and I didn’t want to wait until the winter of 2014, so summer it was! Lowndes Grove is my most favorite spot in Charleston, so there was no doubt with that choice!

We chose our ceremony music based on the music we both loved, and we were okay with not being super traditional. We chose a string duo to play some more modern songs. I walked down the aisle to “Imagine” by John Lennon and we recessed to “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles. Our officiant was also the president of our college–it was very important to us for him to be included in our big day. He is the most inspirational speaker and was very special to us.

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Our cocktail hour was on the front lawn of Lowndes Grove. We served a specialty cocktail made of champagne, St Germain, and brandied cherries. The glass was rimmed with edible gold glitter! The weather was absolutely perfect and the sun was just starting to set on the Ashley River.

What was the design inspiration for your reception? To put it mildly, we are pretty over-the-top people. Dylan and I love making a statement and we wanted the room to be filled with color and truly embody us as a couple and how we live our lives to the fullest. With the help of our planner, Melissa, we chose a palette of red, pink, and metallic gold! We also wanted the lighting in the tent to be insane–Technical Event Company used a mix of amber uplighting and gold chandeliers to really amp up the natural beauty of the plantation.

Who was your favorite vendor and why? Melissa, our wedding planner. She really kept us sane the entire time. Her attention to detail is unrivaled and I had never met someone more organized than me until I met her! I rarely meet someone that can fully read my mind (especially when it is going in a million directions) but then rein me in at the same time. I remember at one point she said, “No Haley, we cannot have a fully gold confetti wall, edible gold glitter, gold cakes, gold chandeliers and a gold dance floor”–and sometimes I needed that!

What kind of food did you serve? Custom hors d’oeuvres were passed along with oysters on the half shell during cocktail hour. Chef Nico Romo of Fish Restaurant catered an entire custom menu based on our favorite meals and family recipes. Some of our favorites were “Dylan’s Bacon Bar” that included pork belly sandwiches, “piggy pops,” and even bacon-infused bourbon. We also served fried catfish and gravy with horseradish mashed potatoes, which is a staple in the Harper home! My parents wrote a cookbook together based on family recipes, so it was important to us that we shared some of our favorites with everyone. Having amazing food was probably most important thing to us. That is one of the reasons we chose Lowndes Grove–so we could use their caterer!!

We chose to have three different cakes! All were beautifully done with various gold designs. My favorite cake had gold polka dots and a fondant bow that mimicked the bow on my wedding dress. We had three flavors: chocolate with honey buttercream, lemon with passion fruit mousse, and raspberry jam and almond cake with cinnamon cream cheese.

Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration: “Hold hands, look both ways and stay together.” My dad said this in his toast. It is something he has told me since I was a little girl and I never realized until that night how important it really was.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Dylan and I met mainly because my college roommate and one of my best friends had a huge crush on him. While I was out of town one of the first weekends of our freshmen year of college, he and his friends decided to play a prank on her! I came home to a completely turned upside down room–drawers flipped upside down, sheets off the bed, and everything a complete mess!! The next time I saw him, I told him he was never allowed in our room again. Our love story is definitely a little slower–we started as inseparable friends and our foundation is based on that friendship. It wasn’t until a year later that we decided to take that risk of turning our friendship into something romantic. After that, we never turned back.
Tell us all about the proposal! Dylan told me that we had a work dinner to go to at one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston, Charleston Grill. We arrived about ten minutes late. They served us a glass of champagne and let us know that our party was late as well, which seemed odd to me. We were escorted to the courtyard area, and not a minute later, Dylan was down on one knee asking the most important question of my life! He had also booked a photographer to capture every moment of the proposal! I wanted to call my parents immediately, but Dylan told me that he had a surprise outside and to not get on the phone. I was then surprised by my very best friend and maid of honor, Ashley, and our best friend Clarke on rickshaws draped in string lights with a “JUST ENGAGED” sign! The rickshaws then drove us to Fish Restaurant, where we were greeted by family and friends. It truly was the most magical night and we’ve never felt so loved!
Tell us about your beautiful engagement ring and how/why your husband (or the two of you!) chose it: I always thought I knew what I wanted in an engagement ring, but found I was so wrong when I actually went and tried them on! Dylan ended up getting a ring made for me that included some family stones, which made it very special for us. It is a five-stone round diamond ring, and it is stunning! My wedding band is all rubies and family stones from my grandmother. Dylan’s wedding band is a gold band engraved with lyrics from our wedding song, “The Best is Yet to Come,” and our wedding date.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Fabulous, romantic, unforgettable.
How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding? 180
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? My wedding dress was beautiful, and the second I tried it on, I knew it was the one. My mother, mother-in-law, and one of my friends came dress shopping with me over Thanksgiving, and our last stop was Maddison Row. Lindsey, the store manager, made me feel 100 percent comfortable throughout the entire process and we still see each other often. My favorite part of my dress was the horsehair bow with lace ends that was around the waist. We also incorporated this design on our cake.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We used a mix of traditional and contemporary vows. We thought it was important to focus on the words and what we were promising to one another, so we worked really hard to make sure each line was something we would and could live by for the rest of our lives. Our favorite line was “All that I am, I give to you and all that I have, I share with you.”
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? My mom gave me her penny that she wore in her shoe for good luck the day of her wedding.
What was the most memorable or touching moment about your wedding day? The morning of my wedding, I started the day having breakfast alone with my parents. Being both only children, this was a big day for us! Afterwards, my dad dropped my mom and I off at Lowndes Grove to start getting ready, and not much later, I received a flower arrangement with a note that read “I love you, Ms. Harper!!! Love, Daddy.”
Did you toss the garter or bouquet? Yes! We had too. You don’t see it too much at weddings anymore, but I swear, it is the most fun part! Something funny always happens. At our wedding, Dylan totally missed everyone during the garter toss, so he had to do it again!
Tell us about your grand exit. We had a sparkler exit, which I think always looks the most magical in pictures! Then we left in a 1966 red Pontiac GTO!!.
What was Southern about your wedding? We are both from the South, so we definitely included some Southern traditions. Dylan gave his best guy friends monogrammed rocks glasses with our wedding date and bourbon and coke in a cigar box. Dylan’s fraternity brothers did their traditional “round up,” which is where they basically all sing in a circle and pour beer on one another. We nixed the beer throwing for our wedding though! During the ceremony, my dad walked me down the aisle, Dylan’s dad was his best man, and we both had a house party instead having a bridal party. My high school girlfriends and I have a hanky that we are passing down with our new initials on it to wrap around our bouquets. I was the second person to use it and it was really special. Before the ceremony, we opted not to see each other at all–I think that may be where all the nerves came from, but it was so worth it once the doors opened and I walked onto the front lawn at Lowndes Grove.
Did you take a honeymoon? If so, where? We decided to go to San Francisco and wine country. Dylan and I are total foodies and love a great glass of vino. We wanted to go somewhere that would get us out of the heat a bit and allow us to really enjoy our time together.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Two things: have a welcome party, even if it is something small or a get together at a local spot. It really helped us make our rounds and say hello to everyone so we didn’t feel pressure on our big day. Second, hire a planner. They make your life way easier throughout the whole process so that you feel 100 percent carefree during your wedding week and while you are away for your honeymoon.
