I always smile when I see a wedding photographed by our Blue Ribbon Vendor, Rachel May, pop up in the blog schedule–without fail, it seems, the weddings she shoots are sweet and feminine, with a touch of Virginia country. Candace and Matthew certainly fall into this category and I love the way they planned their wedding to fit their personalities to a tee. From the songs they walked down the aisle to, to Candace’s dress, to the outfits the gentlemen wore, every detail was a reflection of who Candace and Matthew and their family and friends really are. Because of this, I can only imagine that all of their guests felt right at home–nothing makes a wedding more wonderful than that!

P.S. Candace and Matthew are celebrating one month of marriage tomorrow–yay!!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I’m a Pinterest addict, so I had a copious amount of wedding dresses that I absolutely adored pinned to my wedding board. My first attempt at finding a dress was at David’s Bridal, but since nothing there had truly caught my eye, I wasn’t expecting to find anything. My sister ended up picking out a lace dress that I loved, and as soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one. It was classic, but had vintage flair. My mom was bawling her eyes out because it reminded her of my grandmother’s wedding dress.

My wedding wasn’t the most traditional of weddings. Matthew’s groomsmen are a bunch of rowdy, country boys that love getting dirty, so I figured putting them in a tux or even a suit could potentially end in disaster. They wore navy blue gingham shirts, dark blue jeans, navy blue suspenders, and navy blue ties. We have pictures of them all on top of and jumping off of one of their trucks, which is completely “them.”

Pretty much the only thing Matthew didn’t say “whatever you want” to about the wedding was the song that he and his groomsmen walked down the aisle to. He requested ZZ Top’s “Sharp Dressed Man.” That song right there established the untraditional feel for the entire day. My bridesmaids came in to “Oh, Pretty Woman,” which I deemed fitting with the groomsmen’s song. I walked in to Ingrid Michaelson’s version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” Our recessional was to American Author’s “Best Day of My Life,” for obvious reasons, I think.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I borrowed the lace sleeve off of my grandma’s wedding dress, which had pretty button details at the wrist. We wrapped it around my bouquet. My something blue and old was my great grandma’s sapphire ring. My something new was my shoes–I fell in love with them as soon as I saw them, and knew they would be perfect for the wedding!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? My reception had burlap everywhere! My tables were draped with a navy blue tablecloth, a lace overlay, and then topped with a burlap runner. The chairs had burlap bows. My centerpieces were various-sized mason jars and rustic wooden boxes overflowing with gorgeous flowers. We served pulled pork, BBQ chicken, and my personal favorite, cornbread, at dinner. My favors were s’mores, and they were the cutest things ever!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We went with cupcakes because I wanted a variety of flavors for everyone. Our caterer recommended a bakery in downtown Fredericksburg that has the most delicious tasting cupcakes. We decided to go in for a tasting, and she was right, they were amazing–not to mention, well within budget. We had carrot cake, strawberry, red velvet (Matthew’s favorite), and a chocolate turtle cupcake.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our first dance was to Eric Church’s “Like Jesus Does.” We both love country music, and this song is fitting to our relationship. My favorite song of the entire day was the father-daughter dance song, Point of Grace’s “King of the World.” My DJ, Eric Herod, suggested the song to me because I had mentioned that I couldn’t decide one. As soon as I listened to it, I immediately started crying.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We both worked at CarMax and saw each other in passing from time to time, but it wasn’t until a mutual friend’s birthday party that we started talking. We immediately hit it off and were inseparable from that day on.
Tell us all about the proposal! Matthew met up with me after a business trip to Pennsylvania. I had been sitting in traffic all evening, and he had been impatiently waiting for me to get home. When I got back to work to check my email, he was waiting in the parking lot for me–of course, I took forever to go outside, since I had absolutely no idea that he was out there! He eventually texted me to hurry up because he had a surprise for me. And right there in the parking lot, he proposed to me where we first met.
When did y’all get married? May 18, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 100
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? I love first look pictures, so I threw around the idea of doing one and changed my mind on a daily basis. We ended up sticking with tradition and did not do a first look. I wanted the first time Matthew saw me to be that moment that I was walking toward him to be joined with him forever.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Both Matthew and I were raised in Spotsylvania, Virginia, and a lot of Matthew’s family is local, so we wanted a location that was close to our hometown to make it easy on everyone. I knew from the beginning that I wanted a rustic outdoor ceremony, and I absolutely fell in love with Stevenson Ridge the first time I went there. The wood beams in the lodge were calling my name, and the lush green backdrop for the outdoor ceremony was wonderful.
Describe your wedding flowers. I was absolutely in love with my wedding flowers. I met with Amanda from Anthomanic after drooling over her work for months and months, and I knew she would be PERFECT for what I wanted. We ended up describing my flowers as fluffy and pretty. They included peonies, Juliet roses, and hydrangeas in light pinks, corals, and whites. The groomsmen wore succulent boutonnieres for a more masculine touch.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? A lot of our reception decorations were DIY projects my mom and I made, including the table numbers, the mantle decor, and the favors.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I don’t think I could pick just one. My photographer was wonderful and so sweet, and everyone was in awe of her pictures. My florist blew my mind with all the gorgeous flowers, and my DJ made our reception more fun than I had ever anticipated.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? When removing the garter to Hot Chocolate’s “You Sexy Thing,” Matthew decided to do a little dance while he was removing it. Thank goodness multiple people caught it on video!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t wait until the last moment to start planning–you’ll end up stressing yourself out more than necessary.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We didn’t take a honeymoon right after our wedding because Matthew got a new job, and taking the time off wouldn’t have worked out. So now, we are saving for a nice tropical getaway, and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

I was blessed to have been one of Candace’s bridesmaids and can attest to the fact that this wedding was simply beautiful! Every last detail was so thoughtful and executed perfectly. It was especially clear that day that Matthew and Candace are deeply in love and included all their guests in celebrating that fact!

Mary, it looks like they don’t have them in stock anymore :(. They are called “Go For the Rose Gold Flat” – they came in rose gold and a pewter/silver color. I know they bring items back, so maybe that’s one they will?

Y’all, I cannot stop staring at these pictures of Abbigail and Dylan’s incredible wedding venues! The only thing more lovely than the idyllic Tennessee farm where they said “I do” was their reception in the backyard of Abbigail’s parents’ home, which was modeled after one of their favorite houses in Charleston. That was just one of so many touching, family-oriented details at Abbigail and Dylan’s wedding–they also said a “joining of families” prayer at their ceremony (read about it below–such a great idea!), had the same poem read as Dylan’s parents had at their wedding, and drove off as newlyweds in Abbigail’s dad’s vintage truck. As if that wasn’t enough to love, did I mention their reception meal was ice cream? So fun!

Thank you kindly to Andrew Allen Morton for sharing this beautiful wedding with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. The first time I went shopping, I was just trying to decide what shape/look I was going for. The second time, I tried on a few dresses and, after going back and forth between two similar dresses, decided on “Dakota” by Enzoani. I didn’t cry or anything–I just loved the dress and felt great in it!

For my something old, my aunt gave me a beautiful pearl necklace when I graduated college that was given to her by my grandmother when she graduated college. I wore it as a bracelet. My something new was my earrings! I got them on Etsy and they were white drop druzy stones. I loved the contrast between the lace in my dress and the rough stone. I borrowed a piece of my mom’s lace to wrap around my bouquet, and Dylan gave me a promise ring for my birthday that is blue turquoise. A lady at my church also surprised me with a silver penny. They were only made in 1943 when there was a shortage of copper during WWII. I didn’t wear shoes, but I had it!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We didn’t do a first look because we both liked the element of surprise. There is something so beautiful about the emotion of that moment walking down the aisle, and we knew from the beginning we wanted to go the traditional route. We didn’t see each other at all the day of, and it was definitely worth it!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? The ceremony venue immediately stood out to us. We looked at a few different places, and none of them seemed quite right, but Grace Meadows Farm had a little bit of everything–rolling hills, a beautiful white fence, and a pond. It was an easy choice! They actually have a beautiful red barn where a lot of people have their weddings and receptions, but we couldn’t pass up the beauty of the property.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My brother picked “On Love” by Kahlil Gibran to read. Only after he picked it, Dylan’s parents said they had the same poem read at their wedding–such a wonderful coincidence!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? One of the details about the ceremony that we thought had a Southern feel was having a “joining of families.” Instead of me being given away, we had all four of our parents come to the altar and pray together, celebrating the new family being created.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I can’t pick just one! Some of our favorites were the arbor we stood under, the car we left in, and the guest book. Dylan and my dad built the arbor with wood that we gathered with Dylan’s parents from their farm, and it was decorated by my mom and some ladies that have known me since I was little, so it was a collaborative effort and something we are all very proud of. The car we left in was my dad’s 1972 royal blue Ford Bronco. It was so much fun riding it to our hotel after the reception! The guest book was a handmade journal from one of our friends. She has a small business called Ink+Honey, where she makes beautiful journals and jewelry, so it’s one of a kind! Definitely a keepsake.

The reception venue was my house. My parents built our house about 13 years ago, so I did a lot of my growing up there. The original house plans were for a house in Charleston, South Carolina (which is still standing today) that my parents always loved, so it’s a very Southern-style home. Since I was little, I wanted to have either my ceremony or the reception there. It’s a beautiful place full of fond memories for me.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Andrew Morton was our photographer, and we couldn’t have been happier with him. He is incredibly talented and he was so easy and fun to work with from the beginning! Looking back through our pictures allows us to relive the day, which is awesome because it all goes by so fast! He captured the sweetest moments and all the emotion you hope to see in your wedding photos. We can’t say enough about him!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met our freshman year of college through a campus ministry group. We have always been good friends–our friend group in college was really close. I had a boyfriend at the time, but Dylan and I both knew there was something special between us. We always knew if we ever got the chance to be together, it would last. After our sophomore year, Dylan transferred to a different college, but we always kept in touch. Eventually, the timing was right, and we jumped right into dating and never looked back! We were planning our wedding practically since our first date.
Tell us all about the proposal! Dylan surprised me with a nice sushi dinner, chocolate ice cream (my favorite!), and a sunset hike up Roan Mountain. When we got to the top, there was a quilt with wine and candles set up–I actually thought someone else was having a romantic evening and we were about to ruin it, so I said, “Someone’s on a date–we have to leave!” I quickly realized it was for me when I turned back around to see Dylan on one knee. My parents were actually hidden behind a rock taking pictures of the whole thing. After I said yes, they jumped out and lots of crying/screaming followed. :) Our friends and family were waiting at my parents’ house for a surprise engagement party.
When did y’all get married? May 31, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 300
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We wrote our vows together. I think our favorite phrase was “I promise to remember that your feelings are more important than my preferences, and peace is always better than victory.”
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The bridal party walked out to “Out of the Woods” by Nickel Creek, which is just a beautiful song that we have both always loved. I walked in to “Heartbeats” by Jose Gonzalez, because we liked the untraditional sound and the ambiance of the guitar. We walked out to “The Valley” by The Oh Hellos, which is fun and upbeat! Our first dance was to “Ulysses” by Josh Garrels–it’s soft and beautiful and has always meant so much to us as a couple.
Describe your wedding flowers. We used silk flowers to decorate the entire ceremony so that we could save money and make all the arrangements before the big day. It was great because we didn’t have to worry about them wilting or being damaged. We used every ivory-colored flower we could find, and threw in a few tans and browns too. We decided to use real flowers at the reception and for the bouquets–we had ivory roses, baby’s breath, carnations, and a lot of greenery.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had Ben and Jerry’s catering with four types of ice cream and five different flavors of cake. Since it was a late ceremony/reception, we thought ice cream would be good for a late dessert. The bride and groom’s cakes didn’t turn out quite like we were hoping, but they tasted great!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Definitely planning for 300+ people!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I sounds cheesy, but it was definitely when we saw each other for the first time at the end of the aisle. How could it be any other moment? It’s the one we’d always dreamed of!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff! It’s easy to get overwhelmed with details and everything going perfectly, but just know that it’s impossible for every single detail to be perfect. Find peace in remembering what the day is truly about, and go for it!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are moving to the Nashville area and working towards grad school. We are most looking forward to all the adventures we have ahead of us and to see what God has in store for our lives.

After meeting as camp counselors one summer (and officially becoming a “kanakouple!”), Katie and Adam spent their courtship and engagement in a long distance relationship. While distance can be a challenge, these two put their experience to good use when planning a wedding while both sides of their family were dispersed geographically. After making, borrowing, or thrifting all of the decor, Katie and Adam made BoBrook Farms feel like it had been in their family for years. Obviously, with our love for farm animals here at Southern Weddings, the livestock on site might be one of our favorite parts, but personally, I’m smitten with Katie’s baby’s breath flower crown!

Big SW hugs to Kati Mallory for sharing this fabulous farm day with with us!

P.S. Be sure to read Adam’s favorite moment from their wedding! Y’all, I swear these grooms are trying to make me cry! ;)

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I made an appointment at a cute bridal shop in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, where I’m from. It was such a great experience! My mom and sister came with me. I tried on a few dresses and fell in love with my beautiful dress, especially the soft lace details. We all knew it was the one!

Adam and I didn’t think we would do a first look, but after talking to my photographer and Adam about it more, we decided to do one. I am SO glad we did! It was such a relief to see him before the wedding. The day went smoothly because I was just so happy. Everything felt more casual and there really wasn’t any stress. It didn’t help with the tears though! It was definitely still a challenge to hold it together when I saw him waiting for me at the end of the aisle.

Describe your wedding flowers. I’m so thankful I had Tanarah doing my flowers because I couldn’t really picture what I wanted. They turned out so beautifully though, and were exactly what I wanted, even though I didn’t know it. They all coordinated with the mauve bridesmaid dresses and included peonies, spray roses, veronica, white wax flowers, ranunculus, stock flowers, and dahlias.

From Adam: I will never forget the first look. The actual wedding flew by, but the moment when I turned around and saw my future wife for the first time felt like it lasted forever. I was so excited and nervous, and she looked so beautiful. We were standing alone between rows of berry bushes with only the photographers sneaking around us, and in that moment, in the midst of all of the chaos and excitement, it felt like we were the only people in the world. It was an incredible feeling. I knew she was everything I had ever dreamed of.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We picked Little Rock, Arkansas, because it was a central location for our very dispersed family. I didn’t know the area well, so I spent a whole day looking at different venues, and BoBrook was the last one on the schedule for the day. I loved the outdoor space and I just knew it was right for Adam and me.

I really liked the Southern feel of our wedding. It was on a farm that had ongoing livestock and farming operations, the aisle was covered in hay, the reception beverages (including sweet tea) were served from a barn, the groom’s cake was hunting-themed, and we exited in Adam’s four-wheel drive truck. Adam and his groomsmen wore their favorite boots and new leather suspenders too, which was pretty fun.

Describe your wedding cake. The wedding cake was a delicious, rich vanilla cake with vanilla frosting, covered with flowers. The groom’s cake was a surprise for Adam. Since he loves to hunt, we surrounded a chocolate cake with deer antlers. He loved it!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met when we were camp counselors at Kanakuk Kamps in Branson, Missouri during summer 2010. One day on the dock, Adam sat next to me, introduced himself, and gave me his snacks. Little did he know, the way to my heart was through my sweet tooth! The little free time we had that summer was spent writing each other letters, going on walks, and hanging out on group dates. By the time the summer ended, we were an official “kanakouple.” After that, we spent four long years dating long distance between Florida and Arkansas. We fell in love through weekend visits, long Skype dates, phone calls, texts, and joining up for holidays or vacations anytime our schedules aligned. It was so worth it.
Tell us all about the proposal! On December 2, I read an email from my sorority announcing that we were having a Candlelight that night. A Candlelight is a way for a sorority member to announce to all her friends that she got engaged. Everyone stands in a huge circle and passes the candle around three times, and the girl who is engaged blows out the candle on the third round. It’s always a big surprise and lots of fun! All day, girls were asking if it was my Candlelight (since they knew Adam and I had been dating for a long time), and about half of the time I joked around and said yes. Little did I know, it actually was! During all of this, Adam was on a fishing trip in Arkansas, or so I thought. At the Candlelight, everyone began to sing the song, and the candle started to get passed around the circle. On the third time around, the candle got to me, and I tried to pass it on, but Hillary, my best friend and Kappa Delta big sister, would not let me. After a moment of feeling awkward, whispers from the circle make me look up. Adam was walking towards me, and then, in front of 200 of my friends, he got down on one knee.
When did y’all get married? May 17, 2014
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Over 250
Did you write your own vows? It was a pretty easy decision for us not to, actually. We are both in the health care field and have always been more of the science type than the writer type. We knew how we felt about each other and what we believe the covenant of marriage entails.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? I had three of my really good friends (who drove all the way from Florida!) read some of our favorite Bible verses about marriage.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. One of Adam’s friends sang “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing” as I walked down the aisle. During the ceremony, my aunt sang “Be Thou My Vision.” Both songs really echo what we believe about God and how we want Him to be the center of our marriage. For the recessional, I had the DJ play “When I’m With You” by Ben Rector as a surprise to Adam. He always used to tell me to listen to it and imagine he was singing it to me. Our first dance song was “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. He actually used to sing that one to me!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We really loved the colorful handmade pennants Adam’s cousin let us borrow from her wedding!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Relinquishing control. I wanted to DIY and book everything myself. Finally, I realized I couldn’t do it all, and my mom graciously took over. She also had a ton of help from Adam’s mom, my dad, and our wedding coordinator. I am so thankful for all of them!
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? I either made, borrowed, or thrifted all of the decorations. We also used a DJ instead of a band, and there was still plenty of dancing!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Honestly, every detail and vendor was perfect in my eyes. More than anything though, I am thankful for my parents. I don’t even think the wedding would’ve happened without my dad. He was at the venue all day setting up and fixing every problem that popped up. My mom was with me all day while we got our hair and makeup done. She kept the mood light, got us everywhere on time, and was just a lot of fun.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? One thing people constantly told us, which brought us comfort, was that at the end of the day, no matter how the decorations look, or how the music played, we would be married and that’s what it was all about. That advice helped us enjoy the process instead of stressing.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We just moved into our new house in Memphis. Adam is in dental school, and I am a nurse. We are most looking forward to just doing normal, everyday things together. We weren’t ever able to do that before since we were long distance, so to us, it seems like an exciting adventure!
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? From Adam: With Katie and I coming from two different churches in two different states, we were having trouble choosing a minister to officiate the wedding. Thankfully, I had the idea to ask one of my mentors at Kanakuk, Tyler Holland, if he would be interested. He was already getting ordained for another wedding and said he would love to. He was there on the dock the first time we met and he was there to marry us on our wedding day. He is a great friend and person. It was really special for us to have him officiate his first wedding with us.
