The Atlanta skyline is an amazing one, so I was not surprised at all to hear that when Abby and Matt first saw Ventanas, they knew they had found the venue for their future wedding, even before they were engaged! With the help of Park Avenue Events, they planned a chic rooftop ceremony and reception, being sure to incorporate nods to both of their hometowns and their families. They weren’t afraid to break from tradition when it came to things like song choices and cake flavors, and as a result, every detail of their wedding rang true to their personalities and style!

Thanks to Our Labor of Love for sharing Abby and Matt’s wedding with us, and getting our week started on such a lovely note!

My bouquet was a mix of blush and black anemones, roses, and gardenias. I wanted to keep it simple and elegant, with a little touch of my Southern roots. My grandma and godmother also started collecting new and antique brooches (which they presented to me at different showers over the year we were engaged) to add to the bouquet later. It was gorgeous! I loved my bouquet, and most of all, I loved carrying a part of my family tradition down the aisle with me.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our venue had a helicopter pad overlooking the entire city, and it was the most amazingly clear spring day. We chose to do our first look and bridal party photos up there (brave party). Walking what seemed like into the sky to see my soon-to-be husband was something I’ll never forget!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? To be honest, it was the first and only place we visited. I have had a few girlfriends get married before me, so I found Ventanas a year before Matt proposed, while I was “researching” for a girlfriend. I showed it to Matt and we both knew that it was our venue, even before we were engaged. I am an interior designer, so the blank space and views were all I needed to see. It was just as perfect as we could have imagined!

My best friend’s dad, who has been married for over 30 years, got ordained just for us, which was an honor. We are hoping some of that marriage luck might rub off on us! We had him read our favorite Bible verse about love from Corinthians 13:4-13.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? To be honest, the guest list! We decided on our venue so quickly, we didn’t realize that the capacity restraints for the ceremony were much smaller than what we had in mind. In the end, we were able to accommodate all our family and most of our friends to make the day perfect! Our design team really found a way to comfortably pack in as many people as we could. We also made the executive decision to invite some guests to just the reception, which accommodated much more. Weddings are definitely give and take, and we were happy with our decision.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My husband would definitely say the candy bar (I am pretty sure he is still eating it). I would say our guest book. I bought a Vogue Weddings coffee table book and had people sign that. I loved being able to see where people decided to sign, and the clever comments they made next to some of the greatest wedding dresses in history. The best part is that it actually sits on our coffee table, so we really use it and are constantly reminded of our favorite day and all the people who love us!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I would say the most obvious was our split menu. We had gourmet chicken and waffles, mac and cheese, collard greens, and fried green tomatoes, as only A Legendary Event can do. The other half of the menu represented my Italian New Yorker husband, with hanger steak, fingerling potatoes, caprese salad, and a pasta bar. People are still talking about the food!

I found our wedding cake pretty much immediately. I knew exactly what I wanted: a simple white with a big cascading flower. I let Matt pick his favorite flavors (as crazy as they were). We had an apple cake with caramel filling, and I made sure one layer was red velvet with cream cheese icing, my Southern staple. My event designer, Christine, took the look to the next level with the acrylic stand filled with rose petals!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. It was Thanksgiving weekend, 10 years ago, at Dos Copas in my hometown of Alpharetta, Georgia. I was a girl in art school, and he was a boy in a band, playing in Canada. Many phone calls and a seven-year courtship later, we finally went on our first date. Fireworks went off between us, and three “short” years later, Matt made the best decision of his life…he proposed, and it was a done deal.
Tell us all about the proposal! After the most perfect out-of-town wedding weekend for our best friends, all I wanted was some Taco Bell (classy, I know). Little did I know that Matt had a big surprise up his sleeve. Since I am known to be just a little OCD, Matt had hidden a sparkly surprise in my weekender bag. Despite desperately wanting to eat my lunch and take a nap, I just couldn’t fight the urge to unpack as soon as we got home. With one falsie eyelash was still hanging on and I was rocking my favorite sweat pants, I unpacked my bag, found something that delayed my meal, made me cry, and changed our lives forever. Matt just loves when a good plan comes together!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did do a first look! We decided to do it after much debate (we are pretty superstitious), but when it came down to it, we decided it was more important for us to have a less stressful wedding after the ceremony and a longer reception. We are now so happy we did it! It was probably the only part of the day that was just for us. I loved seeing his reaction before anyone else, and it all became so real. I totally recommend it!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our last seating song was “Moon River” by Audrey Hepburn. It’s my all time favorite, and it set the mood for the entire wedding. For walking down the aisle, my husband chose “Crazy Love” by Michael Bublé. We walked back up the aisle to “I’m The Man” by Aloe Blacc, which was also my husband’s choice–funny, and it got the point across. Our first dance was to “Feels Like Home” by Chantal Kreviazuk, an oldie but such a goodie from Dawson’s Creek. My husband is a DJ, and I sometimes think I should have been, so songs were probably the toughest decisions we had to make. We tried to go with music that reflected each of us, told our story, and wasn’t something you’ve heard 100 times at a wedding.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Of course! My something borrowed was my bracelet…well, part of it. I had a feathered cuff from BHLDN that I ordered and loved, but the clasp broke on the day of the wedding. My aunt/godmother used one of her antique brooches to clasp it–it was a diamond bow and actually looked better then the original! My something blue was for my mom. It was a handkerchief monogrammed with our wedding date and initials, for those happy cries. My something new was my day-of gift from my husband: a surprise second wedding band! One for our day and one for what was to come.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $75,000-$100,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? The menu. In my experience, towards the end of planning is when you realize you may have gone a bit more above your budget than you thought. The easiest way for us to solve this problem was to cut down our menu. We realized we had overestimated numbers and had one too many options. Even with the cut, my husband and I had a more-than-generous late-night snack!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Try to enjoy it! Don’t let the little things take over your mind. Honestly, nobody will ever notice. Enjoy planning with your partner! Guys have ideas, and it’s a big day for him too. Plus, it’s much more fun to share the responsibility!

Thanks to this year’s very long winter, I feel like I have been dreaming of summer for months, and Maria and Jack’s cheery wedding is the perfect eye candy to hold me over until June! A talented graphic designer, Maria took great care in creating branding for the day that perfectly captured their whimsical, colorful, Southern style. From the invitations down to their favors (jam jars in honor of their new married monogram: JAM!), every detail of Maria and Jack’s big day was thoughtful and joyful!

Thank you so much to Whitebox Photo for sharing this fun day with us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Our invitation said it best: “Maria and Jack met at The Baseball Tavern in October 2008. She was new to town. He was visiting from Vermont. They struck up a conversation and he got her number. As luck would have it, he had a job interview in Boston the following week. He asked her to lunch and that was the beginning of their long-distance relationship. It went like this for seven months: Maria visited Jack in Vermont. Jack visited Maria in Boston. Jack graduated, passed for the bar, (fished when he could), and got a job in Maine. Maria began her adventure – living, working, and enjoying life in Beantown. Their journey continued for another two years and three months. Maria bused up to Maine. Jack (and Mac) drove down to Boston. Eventually, the stars aligned and Maria ventured north. They made a home together on Maple Street. After just a few short months, true to form, the call of duty brought them to Buffalo. It took about three and a half years, five cities, 16,737 miles, 37 bus tickets, and 1,040 phone calls to realize that a fleeting moment can become forever.”

As many brides do, I fell in love with a dress I saw in a magazine. I knew I was going to be in Atlanta for a weekend that spring, so I called around, found the dress at a local boutique, and gathered all the ladies in my family for a fun day of dress shopping. I tried it on and absolutely loved it, but I had a feeling I should keep looking, so we headed over to Bridals by Lori to try on a few more. As soon as we arrived, my Nana insisted I try on a Spanish-inspired dress she saw on the mannequin (Nana was born and raised in Spain, so it was a must). As soon as I tried on Nana’s pick, I immediately knew it was “the one”–we all did. It was the perfect way to incorporate my Spanish heritage into our wedding, especially because Nana had picked it out.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided not do a first look on our wedding day because we loved the idea of seeing each other at the altar for the first time. That being said, I’m Catholic but we wanted to be married outside, so in order to be married in the Catholic church, we had a small ceremony on Friday before the rehearsal dinner. It was such a special, intimate experience shared with only our immediate families, and it allowed us to be jitter-free the following day.

We stayed the weekend, got ready, were married, celebrated, and danced the night away just steps from my parents’ home in the North Carolina mountains at Mountaintop Golf and Lake. I would highly recommend doing as much as you can in a single location–it made for a stress-free day!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We exchanged traditional Catholic vows. We loved the simplicity and meaning behind those vows, and although they have been repeated by millions of couples, these vows were ours and ours alone. On a somewhat related note, the priest that married Jack and I had also married my parents (who are celebrating their 30th anniversary this fall!). We always knew that we wanted him to marry us, and when he agreed, we knew the ceremony was going to be incredibly special.

My something old was the diamond in my engagement ring, which was Jack’s grandmother’s. My something new was my fabulous dress. My something borrowed were gold coins called arras, lent to us by a relative from Spain that she used during her wedding ceremony. My something blue was actually a surprise–my dad’s parents have passed, so my family had one of my grandmother’s handkerchiefs sewn into the underside of my dress and embroidered in blue with a lyric from “I Hope You Dance,” a song that is very special to our family.

I would classify our wedding as rustic chic with lots of fun Southern details. Guests received welcome bags that included a wedding weekend itinerary with a thoughtful introduction to the North Carolina mountains, a local brew from Jack’s hometown, Georgia peach gummies, and North Carolina peanuts. Upon arriving to the ceremony, guests received mason jars filled with sweet tea and a Kraft paper bag program holding a pair of branded white wayfarers, because the ceremony was facing the sun. Mint juleps were served at cocktail hour, an assortment of mini pies were for dessert, and we had a whiskey/cigar bar to enjoy during dance breaks. My favorite Southern detail was the branded jar of jam, because our monogram is JAM!

Describe your wedding flowers. I absolutely love mixing and matching bold colors, patterns, and textures, so we chose a dozen different fabrics within our poppy and mint color scheme and had runners made for our gorgeous farm tables. Every other table had a different runner and different flower arrangements. There were heads of cabbage in wooden boxes, poppies in clear glass bottles, peonies in milk glass vases, hydrangeas in vintage tins, and succulents in mercury glass vases. Every table was so fun and different, while keeping a cohesive overall look. With a TON of help from my mom, sister, planner, and florist, my vision was brought to life, and let me tell you, it was even prettier in person.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Instead of traditional wedding cake, we opted for a variety of pies. We make rhubarb pies every other weekend during the summer, so we shared a rhubarb pie while our guests chose from blueberry, apple, cherry, and rhubarb. For the groom’s cake, I surprised Jack with hundreds of Oreos (he’s obsessed!) stacked in the shape of a cake. It was a hit!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Jack and I shared our first dance as husband and wife to “Swept Away” by the Avett Brothers. We went to their concert on our second date and we’ve always loved their music, especially the lyrics to that song. My dad and I danced to “My Maria” by Brooks & Dunn, a song we had danced to many times before/since, but none of which were nearly as special as on that day.

Tell us all about the proposal! Jack proposed on March 9, 2012, shortly after we moved to Buffalo, NY. It started out just like any other Friday night. I had not yet started my new job, so I ran a bunch of errands earlier that day and had just come from the gym to pick Jack up from work. My birthday was earlier that week, so the plan was for us to walk our dog along the Lake Erie waterfront and head home to get ready for dinner. As we were walking and talking, I mentioned that I had found a great deal on his favorite shaving cream, to which he replied, “Oh, I got you something today too.” Just as I was thinking, What could it possibly be, you were at the office all day! he said, “Well, I thought we could get married next spring” and pulled out a little black box. Although we had been dating for over three years (most of which was long distance), moved together twice, and talked about marriage numerous times, that sentence stopped me dead in my tracks (and made me drop our dog’s leash…we’re still not sure where he ran off to during those five minutes of sheer bliss). Jack got down on one knee, poured his heart out, and asked me to be his wife. It was casual, unexpected, and more perfect than I could have ever imagined. To top it all off, Jack surprised me with my parents and sister who had come into town to celebrate for the weekend.

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 177
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We each selected a reading that was meaningful to us. I fell in love with Genesis 2:18-24 and Jack chose a quote from A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway. Together, these two readings represent us as a couple.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My favorite detail was hands down our wedding paper suite. The paper goods were extremely important to me, so I teamed up with a friend to create the wedding suite of my dreams. From (literally) telling the craziness that is our love story with letterpressed invitations, to naming table numbers after places that are near and dear to our hearts, to designing labels for the sweet little jam jar favors, we created a beautiful, cohesive brand for our wedding that truly captured the essence of who we are as a couple.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was planning from afar. From video chats with vendors, to early morning phone calls, to venue visits (both with and without me and Jack), we are forever indebted to our parents, siblings, planner, and everyone who helped make this challenge a blessing in disguise.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We did some serious homework when it came to selecting vendors. We made sure that each and every vendor was not only a good fit for us and our vision, but our budget. We identified and focused our budget on the specific things that were very important to us and saved on other areas that we agreed we could do without.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? As my dad and I spent some amazing quality father/daughter time, we watched guests arrive and the ceremony begin. I’ll never forget seeing Jack walk down the stairs to the altar. As soon as the doors opened and my dad and I started walking down the aisle, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds. After my mom and dad gave me away, Jack was so excited he tried to kiss me the second we got to the altar!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? My advice may seem like an oxymoron, but it would be to plan and enjoy. Put in the legwork up front by allowing family and friends to chip in, building an all-star team of vendors, putting together a timeline, and a list of “must haves.” By doing each of these things, you’ll be able to truly enjoy every moment of the day you’ve been looking forward to your entire life.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We spent an unbelievable honeymoon bike riding through Spain and (reluctantly) returned back to real life. We genuinely love Buffalo, but once we start thinking about a family of our own, we’re hoping to venture South to be closer to our families. Also, shortly after our wedding, the friend I had worked with to create our wedding paper suite started a wedding branding company called Mia Maria Design!

Y’all are in for a real treat! While we Southern Weddings ladies pick the confetti out of our hair and revel in the amazingness that we were able to celebrate with so many of y’all last night at the launch party, you get to enjoy this super fun wedding! Before I gush over all the goodness, I have to say that Kristin Vining, the photographer of this gorgeous soirée, and I share a common bond. Both of our darling husbands actually played on the same baseball team in Charlotte, though sadly, at different times! I’m tickled to know her!

Now to gush over Rachel + Zack’s day. Lisa and I kept looking at the photos and saying how fun this wedding looked! Maybe it’s R + Z’s outlook on life: “We want to live like the world is our playground, even though the farm will always be home.” Or maybe its’s that Rachel’s outlook on flowers: “go big, or go home” (my personal theory on hair and eyelashes). Either way, we can’t help but smile when we scroll through this wedding!

Big hugs to Kristin for sharing it with us!

We were so honored to have LulaKate outfit us for the Launch Party–we didn’t want to take our fun frocks off! I imagine these gals felt the same way!

For flowers, we used the concept “go big, or go home.” My bouquet was a monster, but an insanely gorgeous monster. I wanted peonies, and a whole lot of them. Our florist spared no expense at making each table feel lush, with the most beautiful flowers. My mother and my grandmother have always loved flowers, and we managed to knock even their socks off. I will never regret our flower budget.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Absolutely. We wanted to have some time together prior to all the craziness, and this was the perfect opportunity to do so. Also, we wanted to have the majority of the pictures out of the way prior to the ceremony, so were free to party with our guests after we became husband and wife.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We decided to do traditional vows, and we were very happy with that choice.

Gah, they look like they are having so much fun!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We walked down the aisle to “Marry Me.” I have loved this song since the day it came out and found it fitting to walk down the aisle too. We walked back up the aisle to “Signed, Sealed, and Delivered.” We wanted it to be fun and peppy (plus, we wanted to lighten the mood and start the party!).

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? My groom is Southern to the core. He was raised in tobacco fields and hog farms. While our venue was modern and I fancy myself a lover of all things city, the food was a nod to the South, with good ole shrimp and grits, chicken tenders, ham biscuits, etc.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I would probably say the overall design. I know that encompasses a ton of details, but a good design was what made all the “itty bitty” details happen. I think having a design board to work from (courtesy of Katrina, our planner) and to provide to all the vendors was one thing that made our wedding unique. Every detail fell into our overall design. There was an “image” or “look” we were going for, and I think it was achieved in the end.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Why have one cake when you can have three? We had three wedding cakes, all with different flavors. The cakes were absolutely amazing and one of the focal points of the wedding.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met during our first year of college at North Carolina State University. One of my sorority sisters was having a party at her house and she was hoping to introduce me to one of her male friends from her hometown. Upon arriving to the party, I immediately knew that there was no connection between myself and the gentleman that she had “picked out” for me. Instead, a dark-haired, tall fellow wearing a pink polo shirt had caught my eye. We spent the night getting to know one another and exchanged numbers at the end of the evening. Zack called the next day to invite me to a movie, but I was too studious to ditch class, so I turned down his offer. Luckily, he didn’t get scared off too easily and invited me to lunch at a little Italian restaurant the next week. After a wonderful lunch and a kiss on the cheek goodbye, I called my mom and told her that he was the one. The rest is history.
Tell us all about the proposal! Zack proposed Christmas Day of 2010. After spending the day with family and friends, we were purportedly headed back to my uptown Charlotte apartment that I was living in at the time, but instead, we made a wrong turn. Before I knew what was happening, we were turning into the Ritz Carlton. Zack said we were stopping just to have a few drinks, which I didn’t think to be unusual, so I got out of the car and proceeded inside without any suspicions of what was coming. From there, I learned we were not only going to have a couple of drinks, but we were also spending the night. After checking into our room and coming back down to grab drinks, I noticed the staff to be more than attentive than usual and very chatty. I just assumed everyone was in the Christmas spirit! What I didn’t know at the time was that our suite upstairs was being turned into a candle-filled space that would become the scene of our engagement. At one point, I was so tired that I begged Zack to take me back to the room, but he kept stalling. I think he walked me around every inch of the hotel. Finally, when he allowed me to go back to the room, I opened the door to find more candles than I had ever seen in one place in my life, and out of my peripheral vision, I saw a little box on the corner of the bed. Before I had time to process what was happening, my love was down on one knee popping the question. Of course, I said a resounding YES. I should add to this story that throughout all of this, it was snowing. Yes, snowing in the South on Christmas. It was a breathtaking view looking over the candles in our room to the window of one of the top floors of the Ritz Carlton to see the snow falling outside.
When did y’all get married? April 13, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 200
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. Finding my wedding dress was easy, as I found it on the very first day we went dress shopping. I had seen a picture of the dress in a magazine and found a place in Charlotte, North Carolina that carried it. Upon trying it on, I knew it was the one, but allowed myself to try on a few others and go to one other bridal boutique. By the end of the same day, my mom and I were back at the first store buying my dress and the beautiful sash to go with it.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? During the wedding planning, I transitioned from law student to new lawyer. My time was so consumed with my career that I felt like the wedding was going to be put on the back burner. By hiring a wedding planner, I was able to let someone else make sure all the details were accounted for and all the i’s were dotted and t’s crossed.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? There are actually three people that I could not have done without: my planner, my photographer, and my hair/make-up artist (who also did the fashion styling). They were the perfect trifecta. Together, they made my day absolute perfection (at least in my eyes).
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The one thing I will never forget is rounding the corner of the aisle and seeing Zack standing at the end with tears running down his face. It was at that moment that everyone and everything else slipped to the back of my mind and I was focused on getting to Zack and becoming his wife.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? I believe going at it alone is a HUGE mistake. I think hiring a good team is essential to having your day go seamlessly and having peace of mind that all hands are on deck to take care of the details. It is worth the extra money to have less stress in the long run.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? As a married couple, we want to live like the world is our playground, even though the farm will always be home. We want to sneak in as many vacations as possible prior to starting a family. We also look forward to building our very first home in Eastern North Carolina.
