If I could run off and marry a wedding, it would be this one. Margaret + Marty planned their New Orleans nuptials themselves, with a beautiful venue to springboard off of and a desire to vivaciously celebrate their new life together — one read-through of their interview tells us that M + M love to dance! I’m absolutely smitten with how their wedding seems to have organically sprung up from the bricks at Race and Religious, but the Southern Weddings gals have agreed — it must be Margaret’s radiant personality and lovely smile that top this wedding off beautifully.

Thank you, Heirloom Collective for sharing this day with us!

Two things: How amazing are Margaret’s shoes? I love that they’re a modest nude color with a spark of red! Next, how cool do these gals look below? I am impressed that Margaret’s ‘maids were able to find matching dresses from various stores like Asos, Modcloth and BCBG.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress.
I knew I needed something I’d be able to dance in. I didn’t want anything too trendy, or anything to looked to era-specific. I admired BHLDN dresses from afar until I found out I’d be going to Chicago over Memorial Day weekend, so I booked an appointment with them immediately! After trying on a few options, I put on my dress and never looked back. It was the first dress I did a twirl in, and that’s how I knew.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did decide to do a first look. Our ceremony and reception were at the same place, so we knew we would have limited time to admire each other’s looks and have some alone time.

I love this photo below! Heirloom Collective did a wonderful job capturing a calm and intimate moment before the ceremony. The colors are gorgeous, and I can only imagine the exciting things these gals are talking about while sipping on sodas and fixing each other’s hair.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony?
Song of Solomon 2:10-13, 8:6-7 and Colassians 3:12-17

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. We hired a traditional New Orleans brass band to play before, during and after the ceremony. Our original brass band fell through a week before the wedding, but thankfully our friends helped us pull together a band, and they were wonderful. The entire wedding party walked down the aisle to Trumpet Voluntary, and the recessional was “When the Saints Go Marching In!” We told the band to play whatever they wanted, and that was what they settled on. It was perfect. Our first dance, mother-son and father-daughter dances somehow ended up being disco themed: “Boogie On Reggae Woman” by Stevie Wonder, “Late in the Evening” by Paul Simon and “More than a Woman” by the BeeGees, respectively. It was awesome!

Y’all!! I just want to cry when I see this photo below. There is so much joy!

What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on?
The venue! Our venue was a big chunk of our budget, but we couldn’t imagine NOT getting married there. And, having splurged on such a perfectly curated, eclectic place, we didn’t have to worry about decorating it too much. Our wedding would have a very distinct look (one we wanted) without a lot of work on our part!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding?
The most Southern detail — and part our Northern guests loved the most — was the reception-style dinner! I loved that everyone could mingle while noshing, and we didn’t have to worry about whom to seat where or whether there were exactly as many chairs as there were guests (there weren’t, and it was totally fine). Of course, our food was Southern. We served collard greens, black eyed pea salsa, pickled shrimp salad, cornbread, brisket, pulled pork, the works.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert.
Marty hates cake, so we went with pies for our dessert (and then Marty ended up being too busy dancing to try any! Sorry, Mart!). Our caterer created a bunch of different Southern-influenced pies, including sweet potato pie, an apple galette, and pecan pie, for guests to choose from.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Definitely the dance party. I found our DJ, Otto Orellana, while at a bar with co-workers. We could not stop dancing! So, I asked him for his business card. The next day I emailed him (introducing myself as the girl who could not stop dancing) and asked him to DJ our wedding. He responded with, “Well, I don’t normally do weddings anymore but you and your friends seemed really fun, so sure!” And did he deliver! The dance portion of our wedding was the most fun we’ve ever had.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.
We met in college. During our freshman year, we lived three floors apart and were introduced by mutual friends. We soon learned that we’d gone to brother and sister high schools, had some of the same friends, and had never met! Marty pretended that he needed help with his homework in order to get me to hang out with him. Soon I realized that he didn’t need homework help as much as he needed a dance partner.

Describe the proposal.
We currently live in New Orleans, but we both grew up near Oak Park, Illinois. Every holiday season, we escape our family parties and go see a movie at Lake Theater, a classic art deco movie theater in Oak Park. On the day before Christmas Eve in 2011, Marty invited me to go see Mission: Impossible 4 (how holiday-appropriate!), but instead of going into the theater, he proposed. Afterward we headed to a bar on Madison Street to celebrate with friends and family.

In what month did you get married?
March 2013

How many guests attended your wedding?
115

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Our venue was pretty much a blank slate. We could choose the caterer, the bartender, the flowers, everything. While I loved that everything was completely customizable, it was also a challenge to cover all of our bases without a wedding planner (having tents on standby for rain, ordering compostable dinnerware, renting linens!). We did everything ourselves, down to making sure we had enough ice! But, the upside was that we could do everything our own way, to our taste.

What range did your wedding budget fall into?
$10,000-$25,000

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?
Go with your gut when making decisions and customize your wedding to how you want it.

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future?
We went on a fantastic honeymoon to Paris, Croatia (the Dalmatian Coast) and Istanbul. Now that we’re back, Marty is graduating from Tulane School of Medicine and starting his residency at Tulane; I am continuing to work as a public interest attorney in New Orleans.

Emily and I both think that today’s groom look a bit like Ryan Gosling — what do y’all think? We just adore his smart cardigan and necktie combo, but what’s really making us smile is the bride herself. How infectious is her big grin? Though Ana + Kent planned a beautiful wedding full of details we love, like a Funfetti cake and those lovely leafy arrangements, their favorite part of their big day wasn’t caught on camera. A + K’s most memorable moment of the day came before the “I Do’s,” when they snuck away from the pre-wedding hubbub to get breakfast together at Waffle House. “Best decision we made,” said Ana.

We’re doling out big hugs to Landon Jacob for sharing Ana + Kent’s day with us!

I found my dress in the second store I went to, Evelyn’s Bridal. When I first grabbed my dress off of the rack, I loved the fabric but not the neckline — the dress was originally a halter style. I loved everything else about it, so I had a tailor convert the dress into a strapless gown.

I LOVE flowers. I wanted to have a lot of different flower details in the wedding. We ordered a lot of greenery and filled the tables with beautiful white flowers. I wanted the bouquets to look wild and whimsical and Jordan did a phenomenal job making that happen.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did! We decided that we wanted a few minutes before the wedding that were just our own. I loved the time that we got to spend together.

Did you write your own vows? We modified our vows from ones that the pastors in our church use often in weddings. My favorite phrase said, “In every way I fail, I will pray for Jesus to sustain us by his grace.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We actually didn’t have any. We had our friends sing “Nothing but the Blood,” arranged by All Sons & Daughters, while we took communion, which communicated exactly what we would have wanted read.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. We thought a lot about what music we wanted to play during the ceremony. We both love music, and Kent is a musician, so we carefully chose songs with lyrics that we love. My bridesmaids’ processional was “Beautiful” by Phil Wickham and I walked in to “Divine Romance” by Phil Wickham. We left to “Something in the Water” by Brooke Fraser, one of our favorites. Our first dance was to “Maybe I’m Just Tired” by As Tall as Lions. It’s our song.

Describe the proposal. We had our first date at an awesome little restaurant in downtown Columbia called Cafe Strudel. We went there quite a few times while we were dating, and there was one booth in the back that quickly became “our spot,” as cheesy as it is. Cafe Strudel had plans to move locations, and we wanted to be able to make it back there one last time before they did. One Thursday night in early August, we went to dinner at Five Guys, and then Kent suggested we go get a cup of coffee at Cafe Strudel. I knew that we’d get engaged soon, but I was more than sure that it wasn’t going to be that night! We walked in to Strudel and I was the one who led the way up the stairs to our booth. There were a few picture frames on the wall and on the table, as well as tea lights and flowers. I still didn’t suspect a thing! Kent led me to the first frame, which held a small note about our first date. The next frame had a note about our first kiss, and the last frame had a note about the last time he came to visit me in NC — and how he had asked my parents for their permission to marry me. At this point, I was still embarrassingly oblivious and remember , “How in the world is he going to top this to propose?!” He then grinned like a fool, got down on one knee, and asked me to be his wife. We celebrated for a bit, and then went down to the back patio where he had our close friends and families waiting to celebrate with us! After, we went back to his house, drank some wine, and prayed for a while about our lives. It was a perfect night.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The time frame! We got engaged and decided to get married 3 months later, almost to the day. I had to prioritize which projects were most important to me and see what I could get done before the wedding. There were some details that I wasn’t able to incorporate, but I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

A good friend of ours made all of the dessert for the wedding, including our two-tiered cake. We both wanted Funfetti for our wedding cake (the obvious choice) and had a few other options (red velvet, chocolate) as well. She also made Kent’s groom’s cake. Kent is a graphic designer, and uses Adobe’s Creative Suite often. Alice made two cakes that represented Adobe’s icons as a surprise for him.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Kent and I met at Midtown Fellowship in Columbia, SC, during my senior year of college while he was interning there. We had mutual friends whom we hung out with on several occasions (I found out later that he’d planned some of those hang outs so that we could spend some time together). I had planned on moving back to NC after graduation so, despite thinking he was all kinds of cute, I didn’t think anything would happen. I did move up to NC that fall, but after getting to see each other during a few week-long visits to my best friend in Columbia in the fall, he asked me out to breakfast in December of 2011, to which I responded “ABSOLUTELY!” Later, I called to turn him down because I’d made commitments and didn’t have time that week. Luckily, he didn’t give up and we made plans to go on our first date the next time I was in Columbia in January. We started dating, made many trips back and forth to and from NC and SC during the spring, and I moved back to Columbia in June of 2012. We got engaged after 6 months, and three months later, we were married.
In what month did you get married? November
How many guests attended your wedding? 230
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The “stage.” We loved the tree stumps.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? One of my favorite parts of the wedding was actually the day before. My aunt and cousin threw me a bridal luncheon for all of my bridesmaids and the women in our families. I so enjoyed getting to share that time with them.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Flowers! I live for the outdoors and wanted to have a bunch of flowers.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Honestly? My husband and I went to Waffle House for breakfast that morning, just the two of us, to hang out before all of the festivities started. Best decision we made.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t stress. Decide what’s most important to you and focus on that. Make the goal of your wedding day to get married, and if that happens, congratulations! You did it. Everything else is secondary.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Right now we’re just settling into marriage, enjoying being roommates. We’ll be in Columbia for a good long while–Kent works for Midtown Fellowship Church and I’m working at Cline’s Salon in the Vista. We eventually want to church plant somewhere in the southeast.

Very few of us are lucky enough to be able to celebrate our marriages in the same spot that we developed our relationships. There are, after all, so many things to account for like space, power sourcing, catering kitchens and bathrooms. Fay + Jon were lucky enough to be able to say their vows at Jon’s uncle’s farmland, where they got to know each other and fall in love. It makes their big day even more special to us, especially considering that many of Fay’s family and friends came from across the pond and were able to witness how their story unfolded. “The feeling of having everyone from England and America together for (probably) the only time in our lifetimes was absolutely breathtaking,” said the bride.

We’re so thankful for Katherine Miles Jones who shared this big day with us!

Isn’t Fay’s heirloom ring absolutely stunning? It was a surprise to Jon from Fay’s mother who had come to visit from England just before he popped the question.

“She’d never met Jon in person before, but knew that we’d been talking about marriage. She brought my late grandmother’s engagement ring with her (presuming she’d actually like Jon!). At one point in the week when I wasn’t around, she gave the ring to Jon and told him that if he’d like to, he should propose with it. So when Jon got down on one knee he pulled out this tattered old ring box (the original box) and proposed with my grandmother’s sapphire engagement ring, it was unbelievably special.”

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: The first few dresses I tried on got me really down because I thought I’d like and look good in certain style and I certainly did not! I also wasn’t expecting to find my dress at a chain like David’s Bridal. I’d just gone there because I’m not dress-savvy and they have so many different styles, we thought it would be a great place to get my bearings! After a few that I barely wanted to leave the changing room in, I tried one on that just gave me that feeling. I felt totally myself, and comfortable, and I hadn’t expected to feel that way in any gown. You couldn’t wipe the smile off my face!

We created our entire ceremony with our officiant, who is wonderful and really helped us shape a ceremony that was “us.” She is a Unitarian Universalist, which was very important to me, because I wanted to be married by someone who believes that anyone can be married, no matter who they are and who they’re marrying. My favorite part of our ceremony was asking our friends and family to affirm our vows (which they did, with gusto!). I live 4000 miles away from my family and home, so my friends here have truly become my family. Jon was born and raised in Durham, so he has known many of his current friends for 30 years. For both of us for very different reasons, actively involving our congregation in the ceremony was so important.

How many guests attended your wedding? 150. The number wasn’t very flexible because we got married outside on Jon’s uncle’s farmland, where we spent a lot of time fishing in our early-dating days. We both feel like it’s where we truly got to know each other. Jon’s uncle had a dock built onto the lake especially for the wedding, and we made our altar out of a reclaimed fireplace mantle on the end of the dock.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did not do a first look. We flip-flopped on it for a while but in the end, we both wanted to have that moment on the aisle. I wouldn’t change it for the world. People told me to really savor that walk down the aisle, but as soon as I caught Jon’s eyes, I could not look away. It was so intense and so emotional.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had 2 readings, one chosen by each of us. Jon chose “Love” by Roy Croft and I chose “Sonnet XVII” by Pablo Neruda from 101 Love Poems. I loved how the readings really reflected each of our personalities within our relationship.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. All of our “important” songs were by the Avett Brothers. My maid of honor grew up with the boys in this band and she introduced me to them years ago. Their music is a staple in our cars and house, and is pretty much the only music Jon and I can agree on! The pieces were arranged and played acoustically on the day by our good friend who is a guitarist. The bridal party entered to “January Wedding,” I walked down the aisle to “Pretty Girl at The Airport,” and our first dance was “Swept Away.”

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Antlers!! When I first suggested using antlers in the wedding, I got some strange looks from the florist and Chelsey, (and Jon!) But I think they worked perfectly. I’ve always had a little obsession with antlers (I just think they are beautiful) and Jon’s uncle is an avid hunter, so we had no shortage. (Although we did tell my mom they were naturally shed!) They helped tie everything together so well, especially as we didn’t have a massive budget for flowers and decorations.

We never set out with the intention of making our wedding super Southern, but because of who we are, I think it actually turned out to be a really nice blend of Southern and English. Our signature cocktail was a “Southern High Tea” made with sweet tea vodka, and lemonade. We played corn hole with boards painted as the Union Jack and Stars and Stripes. Our dining setup was four long banquet tables running parallel to each other and dinner was served family style. We fought to have this setup fiercely (budget and practicality should have meant the traditional round-table, plated food setup). I really wanted dinner to feel casual and familial, and as if you were at a garden party at the end of summer with everyone eating together. Even though we were under a tent, it felt like we were eating outdoors. I loved it, and I think it really felt like a big homey Southern garden party.

How’s this for a brilliant marriage? Fay + Jon combined their Southern and English roots to create “Southern High Tea” signature cocktails — a fun spin on the notable drink that characterizes both regions.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Neither Jon nor I like cake very much. We decided to have pies for our wedding desserts. Bourbon-pecan-chocolate chip, key lime, buttermilk-sweet potato, and rustic apple… Aren’t you drooling?!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. I went to Duke University and after graduating, had no idea what I wanted to do with myself. I kept the job I’d had through college, which was waitressing at a local restaurant. Jon’s best friend from high school owned the restaurant and he moved from Baltimore to Durham to take a job managing the bar. The rest is history!
Describe the proposal. I had planned a trip to the same cabin where we spent our first anniversary (near Grandfather Mountain), and Jon jumped on the opportunity to be at a place that meant something to both of us. He planned to propose at the Mile High Swinging Bridge at the top of the mountain when we went up there for a hike. We didn’t know that they’d just finished construction on a new visitor’s center up there, so when we got up there, we were joined by a couple hundred other folks. (Not exactly the private moment Jon had hoped for.) We decided to hike up the neighboring peak with our two dogs, instead. Jon proposed on top of a giant (terrifying) rocky outcrop that he had to beg me to climb up on in the first place!
In what month did you get married? September. We wanted to be outdoors as much as possible and you cannot beat a good September night in North Carolina! We couldn’t decide on an actual date, and ended up flipping a coin because neither of us wanted to be responsible for picking a date if it got rained on!
Describe your wedding flowers: Gorgeous! I wanted the bouquets to feel wild and loose (I hate stuffy round pompom bouquets) and our florist did a fantastic job! They were perfectly free and tangly with lots of spilling tendrils of foliage, while at the same time keeping a delicate, antique feel with the colors and blooms used.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Guest list. Having a very fixed number of guests was hard. Narrowing down our guest list was emotionally draining (not to mention time consuming). I still have palpitations thinking about it occasionally!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Our budget was $20,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? CHELSEY (our wedding coordinator). I cannot emphasize this enough. Some people told us it was a waste of money, some people told us a planner would take over and make it their wedding. These people couldn’t have been more wrong. She was invaluable. She enabled us to create a wedding we’d never have dreamt we’d be able to have, and did it while keeping us totally in control. She saved us from driving each other crazy and went above and beyond constantly. She is worth her weight in gold.
The best vendor decision you made: I adore our pictures. I didn’t know what to do at first about a photographer. I like Max Wanger and Jose Villa, and the photographers here that we looked at just don’t do that style of photography. Then I remembered my old friend from summer camp 12 years ago! I’d friended her on Facebook a while ago and though we didn’t regularly keep in contact, I’d vaguely followed her journey to becoming an independent photographer in NYC. I emailed her to ask if she’d be at all interested/inclined to come to NC (where her parents live) to photograph our wedding. I was THRILLED when she said yes! Neither Jon nor I are particularly comfortable in front of cameras and Katherine being an old friend made everything SO easy and natural! And she is so unbelievably talented. The pictures came out better than I could ever imagine!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The laughter. There was so much!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Be true to yourselves, no matter what that means. You only get that day once, and it goes by so fast. Make it exactly what you want it to be.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? It’s actually going to be nose to the grindstone for the next few years. There will be a lot of school for me and a lot of work for Jon as he carries us through those student loans! But we are planning a long, adventurous honeymoon somewhere off the beaten track before my course starts.

Ashleigh: The suits were from Jos A Bank. They took great care of us and as far as cost is concerned there isn’t a better price out there. In my opinion it was much better to pay a little more for a suit that they, my groomsmen, could keep versus a rental that they have to return.
