While Lisa is our resident Texan, I lived there all summer long and got a fun taste of Texas culture. Since I think I have a pretty good understanding of the area, I would say Amanda and Chip captured laid-back Texas style perfectly! These two lovebirds turned the reins over to their planner, Sweet Pea Events, with the concept of a Southwestern theme that was completely organic, unique, and colorful! The bright florals with feather accents and Amanda’s turquoise conch belt and chambray button down are all fantastic, but my favorite part of Amanda and Chip’s wedding has to be their location. From their sweet proposal to their wedding day, I love how their own home played such a big part in creating traditions and memories!

Tell us all about the proposal! Every summer, Chip flew for a fishing lodge in Alaska, and for the rest of the year, he lived with me. In the spring of 2012, we started wistfully looking at houses online, deciding that we would want to move “hopefully” within the year. We found a gorgeous house on acreage fairly close to my parents’ house and Chip’s winter job, and even drove over to it to admire it from afar. When he returned in October, Chip was in charge of finding a realtor and setting up appointments to look at homes. After a few uninspired tours, Chip suggested we go look at the “unattainable” house we had coveted in the spring, because it was STILL on the market. It was gorgeous and absolutely perfect, and we knew we belonged there. We worked really hard to figure out a way to make it work, and after the new year, we put in an offer. Four months later, we closed on it. One week after closing, Chip and I were walking one of the fence lines as we neared the lake in front of OUR house. When we reached the water, Chip pulled a ring out of his pocket, kneeled down, and asked me if I wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. I’m certain the world stopped and the air stilled. Apparently, he had been planning to propose ever since we put the offer in on the house!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I knew I wanted something that embodied the same laid-back feel we wanted for our wedding, and I wanted to wear a turquoise conch belt. Since we decided to get married six months after our engagement, I didn’t have a lot of time to look. I ultimately decided on a completely custom dress. I provided pictures to the designer, and set off to find the perfect fabric. We also had to create the belt ourselves, since I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. I purchased three different belts and my dad picked pieces from two to make the perfect accessory for me.

Chip wasn’t too opinionated throughout the wedding planning, but he was fairly adamant about the song selections. He really wanted me to walk down the aisle to an acoustic instrumental version of “Amanda” by Boston. We walked back up the aisle to “Some Kind of Wonderful” by Grand Funk Railroad.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We decided on our house because it has a beautiful view, was centrally located for all of our guests, and we didn’t have to pay for it! Plus, it was our dream home and we wanted our life together to start at a place that inspired and moved us.

Describe your wedding flowers. Completely organic, natural, unique and colorful. We wanted a Southwestern theme for our wedding, and since I work in the wedding industry, I wanted to evoke a feeling and style that I hadn’t seen before. I also knew I wanted to incorporate natural and fall elements. With only that and our wedding colors in mind, my boss, the amazing Debby Jewesson of Branching Out, came up with the most incredible designs. I had no idea what she was doing for our wedding until the day-of, but I trusted her. She and her team used turquoise pots, teak wood bowls, quartz and amethyst geodes, antlers, feathers, and hammered silver elements. For flowers, she included pampas grass, protea, air plants, succulents, ranunculus, and beautiful roses, as well as all different textural floral and greenery.

Chip was super excited to hire Layered Bake Shop–we loves Shannon’s cakes. We decided to do a trio of wedding cakes for a more aesthetically pleasing design. I left Shannon to her own devices with only the colors and style in mind. She incorporated turquoise nuggets, watercolor, and stylized Southwestern designs. Branching Out brought dahlias, geodes, and airplanes as accents. The cake was traditional wedding cake and amaretto with swiss buttercream. The groom’s cake was an angry grizzly bear, inspired by Chip’s time in Alaska. The best part was a large chunk of cake missing from the back of the three tiered cake, with the bear holding the cake in his hand!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I did bridal portraits beforehand. We decided to get married outside and we had a groom’s cake. I love talking about these things with my friends that live elsewhere in the country. The boys all wore jeans and boots, and Chip had a specific bourbon he wanted served at the reception!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met on eHarmony in 2010. I think we were both just trying to meet people we had things in common with, without wading through the bar scene in Dallas. Chip was splitting his time between Dallas and Paris, Texas, finding it difficult to settle in either place. He says that I was the first person he was matched with and I had 98% of things in common with him. On the flip side of that, I think I ignored his initial contact for a good three weeks–I thought he was too short! Once we began talking, we immediately hit it off. Our first date was two or three weeks later, a few days before Halloween. After we talked on the phone and texted quite a lot, we had lunch at a burger place in Dallas. We sat on the patio talking for three hours. Chip ended up with a sunburned face and raccoon eyes from his sunglasses! We dated for a few weeks, but I wasn’t sure if we were compatible, because he seemed nervous a lot. Finally, in December, I got to see the real Chip. He is a pilot and took me flying along the Red River and around Lake Texoma. He was self-assured and confident, and I realized I was falling in love with him! Five months after our first date, he decided to move to Dallas for good.

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 75
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We don’t have “a song,” so finding a first dance song was challenging. We knew we wanted a country song, and ended up choosing Randy Travis’ “Deeper Than the Holler.” Chip’s mom chose a song that she used to sing to him when he was little, “You’ve Got a Friend” by James Taylor.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are so happy to share this life together. We are looking forward to raising a family here and recently welcomed the sweetest baby boy to our family.

When your father is a cotton farmer, and your groom works at the farm too, there might not be a more perfect venue than one named Cottontop Plantation! I always love reading about why our sweet couples choose their venues, and Rebecca and Russell’s story is so fun. Their venue isn’t the only element of their wedding where meaningful details reigned–can y’all believe that Rebecca’s stunning gown is actually a family heirloom? It was worn by her paternal grandmother in 1958, and then by her aunt 1983. Not only is the dress in beautiful shape for an heirloom, it is also completely timeless and so very chic!

P.S. I must say, I feel a bit akin to Rebecca, as my own dear husband tends to rock a beard as well!

My wedding dress is a family heirloom. My paternal grandmother wore the dress in 1958, and then my aunt wore it in 1983. The dress was handmade by a friend of the family who worked for a tailor in Columbia, South Carolina. I tried on many dresses, but could never find the vintage lace I was looking for. I asked my Mimi if I could try on her dress, and with tears in her eyes, she said she’d love that. Well, I fell in love with her dress! It was just what I wanted, and it was in really good shape for being that old. I had a friend of mine who does embroidery work sew three patches with all of our initials and wedding dates on them and my mom sewed them into the inside of the skirt.

Describe your wedding flowers. I carried a large bouquet of eucalyptus, dusty miller, brasilia berries, peach astilbe, peach roses, and white hydrangeas. I had the florist make two huge arrangements of the same flowers that were placed in white urns and displayed at the base of the porch steps where the ceremony took place. The farm tables we ate at were draped with a garland made of the same combination of flowers, plus silver candelabras and hurricane globes. The aisle was strewn with ivory rose petals.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? The name of the venue was Cottontop Plantation. It is out in the middle of the country, just seven miles from our house. My dad is a cotton farmer, and Russell works at the farm as well, so besides the venue being very convenient and beautiful, my family and I loved the name Cottontop.

We had two pastors perform our ceremony–one is a family friend we’ve known since I was a little girl, who wrote our introductory thoughts and vows. Our current pastor at our church performed the exchange of rings and the vows. He put a personal touch on it, which made us and our guests more relaxed.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The venue was at a cotton plantation and we used farm tables at the reception. We buried a bottle of bourbon exactly one month before the wedding to keep the rain away and it worked. It’s Southern tradition! I wore pearls as my jewelry and we served sweet tea and lemonade. I had bridal portraits taken at Boone Hall Plantation. We served our guests mac and cheese, chicken, green beans, potatoes, yeast rolls, and salad–a menu you could find on any Southern dining room table on any given Sunday at a family lunch.

My wedding cake was a two-tiered textured white buttercream cake. The tiers were tall and embellished with real roses. We kept it on display near our dinner tables on an old circular oak table with claw feet, draped with my aunt’s lace wedding veil–the same aunt who had worn my wedding dress before me.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Russell and I met back in high school when we were both new students. We had several of the same classes, even though Russell was two years older than me. He was the quarterback of the school’s football team and I was a cheerleader. We dated several years in high school and into college when I got the bug to date other people for a while. I dated several other people, only to realize how much Russell and I were meant for each other. During that time (three years), Russell never dated anyone–he never gave up on me.
Tell us all about the proposal! On April 10, I arrived home from work to find a beautiful Rent the Runway gown hanging up next to some shoes and jewelry. Beside it was a note saying, “1. Put the dress on 2. Fix your hair and makeup 3. Be ready at 7 PM. Ignore the cameras and don’t ask any questions.” My sisters and mom were there to help me get ready. At 7, my sister blindfolded me and drove me up to what was to be mine and Russell’s future home. When I got out of the car, she took off the blindfold and I stood there speechless. There was a gazebo strung with lights, a table for dinner, and candles. I was told to sit down at the table to read a note from Russell, and when I looked up, I saw him walking toward me with three roses. He said, “This first rose is for our past, second for our present and the third for our future. He then got down on his knee and proposed. After that, we sat down for dinner just as the sun was setting, and after dinner, we danced under the lights. It was like something out of a fairy tale! Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We used a string quartet on the porch of the plantation. I didn’t think of using anything but timeless classical music, which sounds so beautiful on strings.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment that I will cherish forever was wearing my grandmothers wedding dress. All the months planning and leading up to the wedding, my grandmother was so proud that I chose to wear her dress.

It doesn’t get much more Southern than a front porch, and when said front porch is the namesake of a beautiful farm venue outside of Nashville, Tennessee, it’s safe to say that you have the attention of the Southern Weddings gals! Christine and Drew chose Front Porch Farms as the venue for their spring wedding, and they loved hosting their out of town family members and friends there. One of their most special guests? The pastor who officiated their ceremony–he had predicted Christine and Drew were perfect for each other a year before they met, and even set them up on their first date!

The pastor who married us had been trying to set us up for over a year. As chance would have it, we were both in other relationships, but that didn’t stop Matt (our pastor) from still trying to get us together. Finally, when the timing was right, we went on a brunch date. After leaving our first date, Drew called his brother and said, “Mark my words, I am going to marry that girl.”

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes!! I’m a wedding photographer, so I know that the day can already be a bit of a blur. I think the first look can be even more intimate of a moment, and it takes nothing away from walking down the aisle. Drew was not sure about doing a first look, but now that we have done it, he thinks it was the best decision. We got sweet photos before the wedding, and we got to spend more time together by seeing each other before the ceremony. It was a favorite moment of the day!

We chose songs that had personal significance in our relationships with God. The wedding party walked down the aisle to “Before the Throne,” and I walked down the aisle to Phil Wikham’s “Divine Romance.” We also played a bluegrass version of “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” They were performed by our talented friends, singer-songwriter Jake Ousley and songwriter Jeff Pardo. After we said our vows, we walked out to “Your Love is Lifting me Higher.”

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The pastor who married us is the man who predicted our marriage a year before we met, and the one who finally got us to go on a date.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Most of our guests were from out of town, so we wanted a venue that allowed our guests to stay in downtown Nashville and experience all that we love about the city. We also wanted a place that had good lighting, was beautiful and didn’t need much additional decor, and was budget friendly.

We had organic bouquets of peach, burgundy, white, and pink Juliet garden roses, ranunculus, anemones with navy centers, peonies, and Queen Anne’s lace, mixed with an assortment of greenery, including seeded eucalyptus and clematis vine. We tied bouquets with a variety of lace and ribbon, and the boutonnières were also all wrapped with different ribbon or gold wire. The table centerpieces were in wooden boxes, and we mixed in wood slices with milk glass, blue mason jars, old books, and brass candle holders. We also had greenery garlands around the menu and bride and groom chairs.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. This is one area where we saved money, but didn’t feel like we cut corners. We ordered three cakes, all with buttercream icing in different textures, and we added flowers for the decoration. The cakes were delicious, and they were from Publix! Drew LOVES chocolate chip cookies–he is literally a cookie monster! Chocolate chip cookies and milk for the groom’s cake were a no-brainer. We had 2%, skim, and almond milk available for guests to have with the cookies.

Tell us all about the proposal! I love to travel. Early one morning, Drew came to my house and woke me up, Starbucks in hand, and told me to pack my bags while he made us breakfast tacos, because we were headed to a destination that was 70 degrees. I was pretty confused and started to list off the design meetings and engagement session I had scheduled, but he assured me he had contacted all of my clients and taken care of everything. As we scanned our ID’s at the airport, San Diego came up on the screen! Once we arrived, we rented a convertible and headed straight to La Jolla beach, where Drew proposed at sunset. He had made three boxes representing when we met, when he fell in love with me, and then him asking me to be his wife. Each box had journal entries he had written and photos. It was extremely significant and special. After that, we got a glass of wine at Hotel de Coronado, followed by some late night McDonald’s. We were able to stay with some of Drew’s friends in San Diego and spent a few days exploring the city.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our first dance was to Tristan Prettyman’s “All I Want is You.” One of our favorite memories of the wedding day was our last dance. We had everyone clear out of the reception and we shared our last dance alone to “Wagon Wheel,” which was the first song we ever danced to together.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I did! My something borrowed was my veil (which I only wore walking down the aisle); it belonged to one of my bridesmaids. My blue was my blue suede Cole Hann wedges. My old was the diamond on my engagement ring; it was my grandmother’s that she gave to me. My new was my Stella York wedding dress!

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We recently moved to Fort Worth, Texas from Nashville and bought our first house! Drew is working at Watermark Community Church as the director of student ministries, and I’m working on starting my photography company, Declare Photography, and my interior design company, Christine Zeiler Interiors, in Fort Worth.
